Bit more done last night
*Shocking pics as I only had my phone and it was dark! apologies!*
- Second coat of paint on the off side rear arch
- Seam sealed near side rear arch but it reacted really badly with the primer so I will have to clean it off and do it again
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image053.jpg
- Seam sealed 1/4 pannel Joins that will be hidden by the bumper so no need to make them look nice
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image052.jpg
- Carried on smoothing and shaping the 1/4 pannel joins on the b pillar and behind the rear window (I'm going to call it the C pillar!:tard: :) )
Near side B pillar

In preparation for painting the car I got hold of some polythene, wood and cable ties and made myself a make shift spray booth!lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2255.jpg
Keeps the wind and rain out a treat! Im going to put some poly on the other side so as I dont get paint on the fence and so as it will completley cover the floor too, and finally a piece to cover the front up when I come to painting. :thumb:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2258.jpg
Got some holes sealed up from when I removed the centre console and also gave the car a hoover out and got rid of months worth of grinding dust (Cheers for the vacuum Olz, worked wonders mate :thumb: )
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2259.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2257.jpg
Also gave the car a going over with the sander to get it keyed.
And Ollys new wings and bonnet looking good:thumb:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2256.jpg
What is best to use to key the roof etc which still have paint/lacquer on?? I went over with 600gritt on the sander, will this be ok??
Liking the spray booth lol When are you painting your shell then?

Boot hatch stripped of rear sceen, wiper, washer jet, locks/handle (Going to be pinned) and excess metal... Can't believe how light it is now lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2261.jpg
Also stripped down both doors, removed all windows etc and are ready to be lightened too.
No other pics, but been very busy with the old sandpaper and sander! Got inside all rubbed down, and outside keyed up.
Removed and stripped down steering column to be rebuilt with my snap off column.
Finally ordered a new N/S front wing too, should have that by Monday. I need to get hold of all the clips and bolts to fasten both wings to the car so if anyone can help me out see my wanted post :D :thumb:

Yesterday we go some more prep done, had three of us hard at it, got my doors partially cut out (Just need tidying up) Can't believe how much weight is saved by doing this!! cleaned them and rubbed them down. Also rust treated the slight surface rust along the bottom edge of one of them.
Bonnet and bootlid both prepped too, with all badges and catches removed as the bonnet will be pinned.
Massive thanks to Steve and Olly for giving me a hand getting stuff prepped

Spent some well deserved time on the car this weekend! Had a few jobs that needed to be done as there's been a slight change of plan for the car... I was intending on painting it myself but I had an offer that I could not turn down as it will mean the car will be painted quicker and better than I could do it and is a very good price that I could not miss! (Let down I know copping out on doing it myself but ho hum!!:p )
The painter had a look at the car last weekend and said he wants it with all the pannels on, so that was this weekends job along with a few other bits and bobs. Picked up some new hinge pins for the doors and tailgate this week in preparation too.
First off we fitted the front wings. We had quite a few issues with them not sitting properly and catching in places as expected for pattern parts, but nothing a bit of grinding and filing didn't sort.
Wings on and stonechipped the insides too
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2275.jpg
Rested bonnet on to see how straight the wings sat (I know theres a bigger gap on one side compared to other but thats just because we rested the bonnet on and it wasn't sat exactly in the middle!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2277.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2278.jpg
Finished cutting the doors out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2272.jpg
Then fitted them and fettled with the wings again to get the best pannel gaps we could. Then got the tailgate on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2279.jpg
And finally chopped the strengthening out the bonnet to lighten it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/DSCN2297.jpg
Then just finished of some filling and sanding and general tidying up. Heres a few pics of the car that now once again resembles a nova!!

Yes I have my carbs and manifold already. I got my manifold from a grasstracking company called BP grassing for £150. They were very helpful too. Your best to call them as the website doesn't have any info about the manifolds etc, but heres the contact details anyway:)

Not sure how I missed that bit of the thread tbh!
I'm hoping I can space the carbs out as Shaun can probably do it for me at work for a drink (or two) so the only cost is the rubbers. Don't want to fork out £150+ if I can avoid it.
With having the big water outlet that goes to the water pump area what effects does that have? Do you have to fit a different hose fo a start?
nova ian
29-12-08, 02:32 PM
I'm going to drill out some holes for the water outlets & have a couple of bits of pipe welded in same as the Bogg Brother ones. I'm not sure what they are for though! Ive been trying to find out for ages! I know the top and smaller of the outlets just goes straight to the header tank and as far as im aware isn't actually needed, and the larger of the two as you said goes to the water pump area and I think you still need this. I know the throttle body manifolds and webber carb manifolds still have these. Does this outlet complete the water cycle around the engine then??
If you can avoid paying for a manifold and saving some pennies go for it. Every little helps :)
trackdaynova
29-12-08, 02:33 PM
Yes you're correct, the return feed to the header tank from the inlet manifold is not needed :thumb: MSN

Just popped back to page 20 for the Cab set up pics, looks really good..
Just one thought though, how dose the depth of that setup compare to an SBD TB setup, as in how close (if there is/was one) to the fire wall would they finish etc? Just for thoughs who might be thinking about doing the same, who still have a firewall.
Scott
You can use a £4 universal choke cable kit for the choke Ian.
And i think R1 carbs use a barrel end throttle cable, so a standard nova cable may fit!

Fuel System
Low pressure Facet pump
Thought about using a bike fuel pump? - might be cheaper than a red top or similar.
For example, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=37012604435 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370126044355)which is about 1/2 the price of the usual Facet pumps
Shell
Door Bars for Cage
I'm sure Olz has some some CDS tubing left over from his Beamer days - might be worth a PM??

30-12-08, 10:55 PM
Yup, I have plenty left, and Ernie is also having some :D

set of 4 of ebay? what they go for in the end? They were £32 +p&p with 5mins to go last I looked. They're £12 each new from yamaha iirc.
:thumb: I know I could of used some silicon hose, but I'd rather use the original fittings and they look a bit neater too imo.

Update time. Got a QH clutch kit for the engine build. Just need to get my ARP's and then thats everything I need for the bottom end:thumb:

Another small update... Got a phone call in the week from the bloke who was meant to be painting the car, said he could do it this weekend :thumb: So got the shell over to him friday afternoon and left it in his hands. Been and fetched it back today. Im well happy with it :)
Its by no means a concourse job and isn't even a vauxhall colour. Its just a 2pak white but looks spot on as its nice and bright and clean! I only decided to have it white as it was finicially more effective! lol and at the end of the day its being built to go round a track and have fun in so no point in spending x amount more for it to be a different colour.
Anyways heres some piccies :D

Thought I'd let you all know some of the progress I've made. Not really got any pics as I just got on with what I had to do!
First things first I had a spacer made up to mount the topmounts to the coilovers so as theres no play. As when you bolt them up with the 2 supplied spacers theres still like a 10mm gap. So rather than pack it out with numerous washers I had this spacer made up to the same outside diameter of the supplied spacer and the same size internal hole. The pic shows it as one length as I've cut it to the exact size I needed
Spacer I had made on left and supplied spacer on right
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/spacer_01.jpg
Comparison of diameters of the spacers
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/spacer_02.jpg
Will get some pics of them fitted on the coilovers. Got to have them lathed down a little so as there 100% flat as I couldn't get the straightest of cuts!
Other progress included
- Door shut and boot shut rubbers cleaned and fitted
- Door Catches fitted
- Handles drilled/painted and fitted
- Quaife quick rack internals fitted into a reconditioned rack along with a new pinion bearing
- Snap off steering wheel slug cut off astra column and re welded onto nova column
- Rack mounts painted and fitted with poly rack bushes
- Rack fitted with new track rod ends
- Column fitted
- TCA and Tie bar mount bushes changed for poly bushes and all painted up, and bolted together with new bottom ball joints
and finally I've just ordered some ARP rod and flywheel bolts, so I have everything for the bottom end build now. Also bought a TAS front gearbox mount so I now have a full set of TAS engine mounts. Happy Days!

Any help or info will be greatly appreciated :D

I've decided on running the topmounts the correct way up as I can't really gain any (if not very minimal) castor on the standard bottom arm setup, and only need to get -2 camber so just mounted them as far back as I could get them... If I do need a little more I will turn down the top a little on a lathe.

Just a local tool and engineering shop. Took in the old one and asked for something similar. They haven't got the washers built into the nut or bolt, but not an issue
Wow good progress man. Like the black on white.
Aye i thought so. I need to get a couple for mine since i lost them lol
Nice one, susp goodies are looking very nice.
They look like the same topmounts as mine, and according to the fancy machines mine is running around 1deg neg camber and 1deg pos caster in the far back and slightly in position. Should be able to sacrifice some caster for more camber though.
Keep up the good work.
Looking great Ian, nice new shiny bits :)
Spigot rings only centre the disc, they dont space it out.
Dont suppose you have any more of that spacer tube do you? I think that gap might be the cause of a bit of play in my avo's, making a light knock sound at slow speeds.
How did you manage to tighten up the top mount spacer nut? (seeing as it covers the flat on the damper piston), hence why i ended up drilling it out and using the normal avo nuts/

Cheer's Adam. I do have two pieces of that spacer tube left, but there both different lengths!! You will have to have them turned down on a lathe to make sure both edges are 100% flat and as its mega hard steel, we couldn't cut through with a hacksaw!
As for the top nut on the coilovers for now I just got it as tight as I could. It will be redone so it goes further down at a later date. just used it for now to get it on its wheels.
The Disc on the drivers side hub is causing a massive problem though! I thought maybe it wasn't seated properly as it only caught in one place in a full revolution, but had a look today and tightened it on and its still catching. Compared to the one on the passenger side that has about 4mm clearence. Dont know what to do about it because, if I were to space the disc out the calliper wouldn't fit right. I'm wondering if its a problem with the hub??
..... And thanks everyone else for the comments. It sure does feel good bolting new bits on but seriously annoying getting all these niggles and problems!!

As far as I know, I got the hubs already built up so can only assume they are. But the fact the disc is to far in would suggest that the bearing would be pressed in too far, and then the circlip wouldn't have gone in?? Will have to have a closer look, but when I was looking at both hubs when I painted them there was no obvious differences
Edited - Thanks Chris!! Just saw your post as I posted this!!
Are your bearings pressed in correctly?
Do Nova's use tapered bearings on the front or a roller typre bearing?, either way i cannot see this happening. Because on a roller type bearing you can only press it so far into the hub then you have a circlip, and there is know way of getting the circlip in without the bearing being pressed in to the hub all the way.
Im 99% sure there a roller type bearing anyway.
Jay.

Finally back to the problem I'm having with the brake discs hitting the hub carrier we had a look at them again. The Disc that seemed ok on the passenger side wasn't catching as the bearing has alot of play in it. The hub carrier looks as though its been machined out too big so the bearing fit is to loose.
What front wheel bearings do people run for the 2ltr hubs?? I'm going to have my other hub carriers machined for the bearing so I know its all sorted and see if this resolves the catching issue

Bit more done tonight. Sorted out the issue with the brake disc catching on the hub carrier steering arm. There was alot of play in the the hub and we thought this maybe partly at fault as the disc may not have been sitting true, but after stripping it all down and having a look it was clear everything was ok as when the driveshaft was tightened up it took out all the play.
So we decided that the best solution was to grind a bit of the hub carrier as theres plenty of metal there and we only took off about 1mm. (Other idea was to space the disc out but this would have been a nightmare when fitting the calliper). So now there nice and free.
The problem area after being ground down, loads of clearance now!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image048-1.jpg
And finally I had problems fitting my seat onto the standard subframe that had been modified for fitting fixed buckets, as the previous owner must have had wider seats than mine so there was a huge gap. So the mounts were cut off and rewelded to suit my seat and then painted up all nice

Thats ready to be bolted into the car now and I can finish mounting the drivers side harnesses.
Also decided to have my topmounts turned down so as I can get more camber (and castor eventually) so should get them back this week and it can all go together and go back on its wheels and then its on with the rear beam!!

Are you sure? V6 / turbo stuff bolts straight on without a spacer plate?? Fits same as 2ltr stuff
Mine bolted right on.
What discs are those?
nova ian
26-02-09, 09:09 PM
Not a clue! I bought the seup off a friend as the V6 setup
Must be something different then! The callipers are identical to the 256 setup I had previously and as for discs I really don't know! they measure 284mm but will check again. But looking at it the calliper wouldn't go on without the spacer
Id put money on them discs not being vauxhall ones, so the offset on them is wrong, hence they sit too far "back" on the hub..... touching the knuckle

looks like you've got a kit that goes bigger disc but respaces the 2ltr caliper.
tbh bud I'd either swap the setup for turbo or v6 or go 4 pots. V6 calipers are dead easy to come by as they were fitted to all 2ltr veccy's aswell. I may even have a spare pair in the shed if you can't find any local. Turbo ones would be better tho as they are meant to give a better pedal feel as they have a smaller piston.

Cheers dude,
To be honest the only reason I bought this setup is that I got it so cheap with brand spanking new callipers. So seeing as I've got it sorted now i'm going to run this setup until I can afford a 4 pot setup later down the line.
I think it should still be adequate with the pedal box and full braided lines.

Exactly the same one's mate, just thought i'd add some just incase, rather than fooking up the shocker.
As for the engine it should be going in at the begining of next month, should be built by then :)
Do you know when it comes to fitting it, i've read something about a lug being cut off the gearbox? can anyone shed any light on this or show some pics??
Draper: Trust me there's lots left to do!!

Did some work on the bike carbs, so as there ready for bolting up to the engine.
- Started off by removing the backing plates held on with 3 SUPER TIGHT cross headed scews
- Next was to remove the float bowls by removing the securing pin
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image065.jpg
- Followed by the main jets and filters
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Carb.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image060-1.jpg
- Then I drilled out the jets to 1.5mm. (Standard R1 Jet on LEFT, 1.5mm jet on RIGHT)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v314/cruisindude/nova/Image064.jpg
and then reassembled them making sure everything was nice and clean. I know that the jets are recommended to be drilled out to 1.8mm for a 20xe, however I thought I'd start slightly smaller so as when the car goes to be setup it can have the jets enlarged progressively to achieve the best results

Thanks dude, Its deffinately getting there slowly! lol
As for trumpets no I don't have any. I keep looking but as yet I have non. I did make a template last night for the air filter back plate so will need to get the trumpets soon to be able to fasten it on!! I want to use the 'R1' ones (or similar) as there designed to hold the filter back plate on too.

I got very lucky and found smeone braking an R1 on ebay so messaged him and got the 4 inlet rubbers and the rubber trumpets for £40 posted. They're a cool little trumpet and sweep up too. They don't screw into place but insead slide over and have a spring holding it on, but it should be enough to hold the filter in place. I need to get a filter yet - where's best place?

That was a bargain on the the rubbers mate, let me know if you come across some more trumpets ;)
I have an ITG one that I got off Olly a while back, just need to have the backing plate made to match the carbs.

Update wise, not alot to tell, but the head and manifold ports have now been matched. Washed it all down and built it back up bar one valve as the spring broke off one of the stem seal when it was removed :(
Good job it was stripped again though as when washing it out we found some foil off the top of an oil can that had been in there a fair few years! Could have been bad news :wtf:

Well I've been busy working away over the past couple of days, and been working on the nova till 11pm tonight trying to get the engine to sit right on solid mounts, what a nightmare!! I will have to get some pics of where I was having problems, although one area was the rear gearbox mount which I've had to enlongate as most people seemed to have done, but my main problem was the front engine mount (drivers side) as it was under far to much pressure when bolted up tight, I need to put a spacer in between the mount and the bracket, will get some pics tomorrow t show this. Massive Thanks to Ernie who I called to get some advice off too, cheers pal:thumb:

You mean he had to drill through the chasis leg to get a bolt in?? I didn't do that, I bolted it on loosely first and had to use a pry bar to tighten it as my spanners were to thick to fit up the back of it...
I'm not sure if the conversion bracket I have is right for solid mounts as were it sits with no pressure on and without pulling the bush right out to one side is about half inch away from the mount, hence why i'm going to space it. Need to get a pic, but was trying to get it done last night that taking a pic didnt even cross my mind! lol
And as for the front gearbox mount, it can slide about between the two chasis brackets, so do I need a spacer in to stop it from moving? again it will be easier to see what im raving on about with a pic! lol
Thanks for the comments everyone :D

Also, how come the rear mount needs elongating? noticed Stubbs has also done this? I've never need to do this, yes its tight, but surely you want it to be held tight in place?

Mine wasnt tight, it was impossible to fit :thumb:
Theres no way the rear mount would fit without elongating the hole/re-drilling it
The bolt should "clamp" the bracket to the mount hole to stop it moving anywhere, so it should be 'reet.
Quite a few others have had to do it too with solid mounts :)

I have had it bolted up without modifying or spacing any mounts, but there was so much stress from the rear gearbox mount that it was pushing the front gearbox mount right forward, and the drivers side front engine mount had pulled the rubber bush through in turn pulling the bolt head over so I couldn't get a spanner on to tighten it and had to use a pry bar... I just wasn't happy with the engine stressing all the mounts as to me if there under stress before anything is able to move then they can't do there job when there meant too.
Excuse the shocking drawing but below shows how the mount was sitting unspaced and with the washers on

All you need to do to get rid of the sandwidge plate for the time being is to get a new centre bolt bit from vauxhall. Have a search on here.
If you remove the oil cooler plate, you can get a fitting to screw the oil filter straight to the pump from vauxhall.
Cars looking good dont know how ive missed this thread, gonna have a look through it now :)

Some good progress!
Ian Vaux part number 90144360 (a few £ only) will allow you to screw a filter into the pump without the sandwich plate.
I really cant wait to see this all finshed. Keep up the good work !
