I've fitted the release bearing and bolted the selector turret on, just need to fit the diff cover and tap the dowels back through that locate the casing halves together. Then its re-fit tomorrow afternoon and some thrashing :D:D:D

Have spent the best part of two (half) days trying to get the box to select properly and have had no joy, so to cheer myself up I commenced the most dramatic set of changes to my nova yet. Here begins ''Project Aero''
Front aero is gonna (hopefully) yield big improvements to performance, increasing grip through downforce generation and reducing drag by restricting the flow underbody. I know it looks a bit chav, but to be honest I couldn't give a toss lol
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00808.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00809.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00811.jpg
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00813.jpg
The area of the splitter region of the bumper is approximately 100 square inches, therefore just 1psi of pressure at the front of the car would give 45kgs of downforce. I intend to have a horizontal extension from the base of this splitter that will be adjustable to allow me to tailor the downforce. This splitter extension will extend rearwards and slightly down under the front of the car to produce a high-speed and therefore low pressure region, again increasing downforce. This will join into a flat floor and rear diffuser set-up :thumb:

gahhhh stop blooding spending on the car, and use it for what you've built it for!!!
its currently not broke, so don't try and fix something, that works (aerodynamics) lol
how many times has it seen the track this whole year? lol
Oh noes! Nova headlights!!!!!!!!
is that a magnum bumper? i did like those back in the day. :)

I wasn't gining it full beans in the vid casual gearchanges etc, as it was only just fitted. I did drag it up to about 7+krpm in first to verify that it does show over 60mph on the speedo tho

Cheers Adam, first is mental long, kinda cool though. Look forward to having a play with a motorbike and seeing the guys face when I haven't changed gear yet lol
dhdev (Oli)
27-09-08, 10:49 AM
It's rubbish in stop-start traffic, but then the car wasn't built to do school runs in lol I think it'll be ok if I gave it a full bore launch, don't think it'd bog down. And it's kinda weird getting used to actually engaging and using first whilst moving :tard:
That first gear stopped CP from being able to launch off the line without wheelspin or bogging. Its designed for track use though so no problem. If you really push the first to second change you'll break the brass tabs of the syncro rings too.
Thats the end of your 1/4 mile runs then Oli lol
Whats 2nd gear like? Say if you change into 2nd at 60mph, are you straight away near the rev limiter in 2nd gear?
dhdev (Oli)
27-09-08, 01:56 PM

CP's was a 1400 with less torque and power and more weight in the car though ;) I'm confident I can get a decent launch, I'll bear in mind the poor synchros tho!
Adam all the changes keep it right on the boil, doesn't drop more than 2000revs IIRC. :D

Well I'm back at uni now, and haven't had internet connection until now! Not that there has been much 'progress'. I'm waiting on the landlord fixing the garage door, before I bring my baby down here. i did however pop home last weekend and before flying out to the ring I made a couple of external (camera phone) vids :thumb:

This is the only update so far
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00905.jpg
It's actually in a garage for winter  Brought the car down to my student house at the beginning of last week and tucked it away in the garage. I've been ill for the past ten days, and now that I'm feeling better I have a shoite load of work to catch up on, so no progress for a while. I will be heading back home in the boat this weekend, so I will return armed with tools and the front bumper, polo headlights and some materials :thumb:
I've also been researching wheels and I'm trying to justify in my head spending £600 on new rims that could potentially save around 12kgs+
The gearbox is worth every penny, the noise alone is worth the money, but when you get moving its an absolute joy! I think its especially good on the smallblock as it keeps the revs nice and high and really negates the lack of torque low down :) It is a PITA when you're on the motorway or in town though. I drove down from the midlands at about 65mph because the noise of the engine at the increased revs was too much, plus when you're in town in traffic a first gear that does 60mph is a nuisance too, it's like pulling away in 2nd in a normal car :( That said I'd never want to go back on a track orientated car

I've just ordered one of these as a belated birthday present from a relative...
http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/images/newmounts/superclampballjoint.jpg
Super Clamp with ball and socket - Includes the excellent super clamp made by manfrotto.
Supplied with a high quality cullman ball and socket. This can be used with bullet cameras and small to medium DSC's or camcorders.
So I should soon be able to make better quality in car movies :thumb:
I'm heading home this weekend and I'm gonna be picking up a matrix and blower from General Baxter (Cheers dude!), I'll collect my front bumper, and fill the calibra with tools.
Then when I get a moment down here, I'll remove the inlet manifold, adapt it so that I can have a take off for the heater matrix. Refit the manifold, plumb in and mount the matrix, wire in and mount the blower. Possibly get hold of some new seals and replace the shonky ones fitted to the front windows. Seal up the opening caused by the corsa pedal box. Buy some new front tyres (possibly a set of cheap road tyres) and then maybe book a winter trackday

RWD lunacy is on hold as making a debut in racing seemed more exciting for now! Took the race car no.2 out for a shakedown today and it felt good, obviously not as light as the nova but still felt pretty damn nimble! Look forward to using it on track for a proper shakedown at Silverstone in a month :)

It deserves to be garaged, hence needing to sell, if I'd have had a garage to keep it in I'd have kept it! Wish you all the best with it Darren!
Cheers for the offer of the quickrack group-buy, but I'm afraid this is built for the VAG trophy and quick-racks are a no-no :( Shame really because I noticed the extra turns in comparison to the nova as soon as I started pushing a bit yesterday.
No worries mate, if you know of anyone that just has a trackday car then it may be worth mentioning. Prices are similar to the LHD rack Quaife sell iirc

Heading to the ISTS at Silverstone on Saturday for the first pre-season shakedown, we're booked in with both cars for 3 sessions during the day. I'll be doing two sessions in the white golf, then a session in the black golf just for fun :d
Colin finished putting together the black golf yesterday and took the trip down to Southampton to run the engine in. While he was here I grabbed a couple of pics of it on the driveway.

That's favourite at the moment! Would like to find a secondhand one though, as buying new means you take a huge hit on resale, whereas S/H they hold their value well. The Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is also a contender, but I get the feeling I'd always be wishing I'd bought the Canon.

The other day it was garaged with a suspected gearbox oil leak by the guy clocking up the miles. On closer inspection it is oil coming out of the header tank and running onto the box :( I'm going up to the Midlands tomorrow and I'll see if it's fixable before Saturday's track sessions, if not the 328 is coming out to play :thumb:

Colin finished putting together the black golf yesterday and took the trip down to Southampton to run the engine in. While he was here I grabbed a couple of pics of it on the driveway.

It makes trackdays seem tame! Even a proper test session is better than a trackday, as you're much less restricted e.g. overtaking etc.

Castle Combe results -
Qualified 1st in class (out of 4), 10th overall (IIRC) with a 1.22.647 lap
Finished 2nd in class, 7th overall.
I actually had a to fight for position this time and I think some of my inexperience shone through with me cooking my tyres trying to stay ahead, in my defence the car that beat me had many illegal mods (welded cage, Brembo four pot brakes, poly carbs). But in reality it was my own fault and should've been avoidable. He took me at quarry, I got him back at Camp, he then took me at quarry again (he has 2.0l grunt) then I overcooked it through the esses trying to get a run down to camp and he took the flag :( I have vids of Quali and the Race which I'll post up tomorrow :thumb:

In Red-Bull Racing stylee, during the summer break we have implemented a suite of upgrades to the car. We have been running well overweight meaning that we were down on power/weight ratio, so to counteract that throttle bodies are in the process of being fitted  The regs have also changed to allow any VAG brakes to be fitted, so as an immediate upgrade a set of G60 brakes (280mm) have been fitted. The black race car has also donated its remote reservoir inverted AVO coilovers and many bespoke mounts and mods have been fabricated. Pics will follow.
Suffice to say, I should be doing better than 2nd place at Cadwell park next weekend :thumb:

Around £200 per race entry, 2-3 races per set of tyres, £40 of fuel is enough for me to drive to and from Combe and Race+Quali, licence was around £500 including test/medical/Go-racing pack, series entry was £75 (iirc), Helmet/gloves/boots/suit anything from £400+, cost of car depends on how crazy you want to go.

Lovely cars, have the Avo's been rebuilt recently ? I gave up with those as the damn things just dont stop leaking ! Have to say though that Avo were always good with sorting them out which is more than some other manufacturers.

The pic of the AVO's in the boot was them just back from AVO for a free rebuild lollollol
I fookin love Ohlin's, been spending some time testing with Volkswagen Racing and their demo car has them fitted, it's lush
James, standard turbo but it could do with some of your magic. I'll PM you later :thumb:
lol, better to have it done now than have them let you down.
As for the Ohlins, was quite fortunate to dismantle a car running them so decided I would keep them for myself. I'd never go and buy some simply as there so bloody expensive though ! There are some good service centres in the uk now though so not such a nightmare having springs changed and stuff like that which would put most people off usually.
Best of luck with the Golf, looks like a lovely bit of kit.

The changeable weather today led to a wet quali and dry-to-wet race. It was my first time driving the Golf in the wet and only the second time ever that I have driven on track in the wet! I took to it like a duck to water lol Some of the bigger power boys in classes A and B struggled with the conditions meaning I qualified first in class (again no direct competition unfortunately) and third on the grid :d
The track had almost dried come race time and i was lined up next to a 1.8 20vT Leon, with a 1.8 20vt Mk2 golf on the row behind :( The Leon surged ahead off the start and I tucked in behind. His corner speeds were much slower than mine, but his straight line pace meant he could hold me off and in the process hold me up allowing the mk2 turbo to catch. I went for a do-or-die dive down the inside and made contact with the Leon, which allowed the mk2 turbo passed. They squabbled with each other which allowed me back passed the mk2, however in my eagerness to catch the Leon I took an excursion to the grass, dropping me back behind the mk2. I decided at that point that seeing as I wasn't racing them for class position, I'd back off and make sure I finished!
So ended up 4th overall (due to one of the front row retiring) and 1st in a class of 1 lol
Vids are uploading slowly!
Ps I also drove the car too and from the circuit again, none of this trailer queen nonsense :thumb:

There is quite a lot of engine (and hence gearstick) movement, we've aleviated the front back movement with the solid front-mount, i think something needs doing with the other two mounts next :thumb:
A golf, a rollcage, extinguisher, cut off switch, a set of R888's, race licence and overalls/helmet. Do it!

The out of sync sound seems to be caused by the Contour site, I've done a re-host of a clip on Youtube and it is fine.
Also the car wasn't even working on Friday at 4pm as we couldn't get the car started on the map we had been supplied with, so the car was actually running a map for a 2.0 16v instead! The suspension was also not set-up as the only testing/driving that was done prior to the race was driving it there! lol

09-09-13, 11:18 AM
I think I'm just spoilt at work. I've become accustomed to driving some of the finest cars made. So jumping into a Nova to head home, just doesn't fill me with delight. The steering, brakes, suspension, driving position, engine performance, refinement etc etc are all poor by today's standard, let alone compared to the Ferrari/Porsche/Jag/Range Rover etc I may have been driving at work. My current daily is an Alpina D3 and that is excellent in almost every aspect (IMO obviously).
I'm not sure what I was expecting really, I just have very fond memories of my old nova. But short of spending thousands creating DHDev Mk2, it would never be the same. If I was to spend that sort of time/money, sadly I think I'd rather invest it into a more modern/RWD car :(
