Surtees is a belting corner when you nail it. Did you get to the point where you end up in a kind of controlled tank slapper? lol

She sounds wonderful mate, itching to get mine out in a week now!!!

Cheers for the comments guys :D Got a few little styling (!) bits to sort before combe and a bit of a detailing session (!!) then I'll be fairly happy, until I've got the cash to fit my cams ;)

BT - I never had it in tank slapper mode, u must be mistaking it for a big block  (cheap shot, sorry) I took a different line, I turned in late and straight lined the 'S' as mch as poss, before standing on the brakes before clearway. Seemed to be rather effective too :D

Theres loads of ways to go through there, iirc the last time i did brands i never went through it the same twice lol

Looking and sounding nice Oli. How was the handling with the wide front track?

dhdev (Oli)

understeer thru the LH, understeer thru the right hand or even both! Guess it must be a bit of a lottery! Sorry I can't help myself haha

Dar the handling seems good. I need more negative camber at the front, more castor and more pressure in the rear tyres, but it was good enough to pass a civic type r britcar on full slicks :D

Does seem to torque steer a bit more (shocker I know with no torque!).

dhdev (Oli)

Went out for a 20 min blast. Was driving in a spirited manner, but not limitering it or anything silly. Dropped it down a gear for a corner, went to accelerate out the other side and it started spluttering like a misfire. I knocked it to neutral revved it and it sounded sheeite so I killed it and coasted to my mates house. Pulled up and started it and it sounded like it had snapped a rod or something stooopid, so turned it off. Got trailored home, topped up the oil (was low) and fired it up and it is tapping like an angry keyboard warrior. Think it must've got starved of oil and seized a lifter or two.
I've got new cams to go in, so I'll strip it, get some new lifters (possibly solids) if thats the prob and hopefully it'll be hunky dorey :thumb:

agree with lee, gutted, but as you say some cams are waiting to be fitted so stripping it down can at least be justified even if you werent ready quite yet

what have you done with your alternator to get it out the way oli ?? i was thinking about running a small jap one off the front of the block ??

dhdev (Oli)
19-04-07, 11:55 PM
what have you done with your alternator to get it out the way oli ?? i was thinking about running a small jap one off the front of the block ??

I made a bracket out of thick steel (heavy :( ) to lower the bottom mounting point by about 1"-1.5" then made an extended top arm to go between the 13mm headed bolt on the cylinder-head to the 13mm headed bolt on the top of the alernator, just a bent bit of steel with a hole at one end and a slot at the other, to allow adjustment. Then get a belt to fit from Halfrauds.

draper
19-04-07, 11:57 PM
i get you, is your car road legal ?? why not just lose the alt altogether ??

dhdev (Oli)
20-04-07, 12:19 AM
It is road legal, but it's absolutely sheeeite on the road cos its so stiff and light.
I've only got a tiny race battery so it needs all the help it can get, I would like a smaller alternator tho, cos the standard Corsa GSI one is definately overkill for the amount of electrics my car has lol

Chris
20-04-07, 09:43 AM
Its a fun-size version, like a real engine but smaller...

What would run the car? LOl

Sorry to hear about the engine, at least it gives you an excuse fit the new cams tho :)

Does your alternator not rub the chassis leg, with you running poly-v pullys and belt? Im switching mine to single v.

Stuart
20-04-07, 11:32 AM
running total loss is fine aslong as youve got a few batterys for a days track use lol.

Id be inclined to get an alternator from something tiny like an aygo/uno etc and make that fit.

dhdev (Oli)
20-04-07, 12:31 PM
I am tempted to try and find a small alt to suit, I think a few of the boyo's on mig have done it using suzuki alternators.
The pulley has about 2-3mm clearance on the chassis leg, which is more than enough with solid engine mounts :D

Adam
20-04-07, 12:45 PM
I'll be using "silicone adjusted" mounts, so i'll find a single-v setup use,Lol.

craig green
20-04-07, 01:13 PM
Single V belt is the way to go IMO. Ive got jack clearance really.

Nissan Micra alt is one Ive heard of & Suzuki Swift rings a bell on Novas too.

Years ago my mum used to have a little dynamo on her bike that ran on the back wheel to power the lights. Surely that would be plenty lol

dhdev (Oli)
20-04-07, 03:01 PM
Or hard wire one of those solar powered trickle chargers in, it only gets used when its sunny anyway lol

Chunky Lover
20-04-07, 11:32 PM
and only let the nova out on a sunny day?

dhdev (Oli)
24-05-07, 11:47 AM
Ooops seems I've been a bit lazy since my last update.
Currently the nova is sleeping in the workshop with no head attached! The head is away having a new guide fitted, I have a set of new lifters, the gaskets, bolts and belts have all been ordered, the sump is coming of tonight so I can tap it for the thermocouple to suit my SPA oil temp/press gauge, an adapter is being made at the moment to suit the pressure transducer, i'm gonna fit a union to the sump whilst its of so I can return the oil from my new catch tank (hopefully cure the breather problem), I'm opening out the inlet manifold to match the head, the injectors will be dropped off tonight for cleaning and new o-rings.
So before PV that just leaves; re-painting the cam-cover this weekend (colour ideas???), fit the head and cams etc, seal the spare wheel blanking plate in place, fit the gauge and wiring, order pacet fan and fit, mount the catch tank, modify the brackets for the headlights and then take it for mapping at Jamsport next thursday :D

dhdev (Oli)
28-05-07, 06:22 PM
Did a little work today, refitted my modified sump with a new gasket. The sump now has a union for an oil return from the new catch tank to hopefully solve the baby valver breather prob. I also tapped the sump to allow me to fit a thermocouple for my SPA dual oil temp/press gauge. I fitted the pressure transducer for the gauge in place of the standard press switch, though this seems to close to the driveshaft so I may need to make a new adapter. Also fitted the oil catch tank and gauge and this is how they look.

dhdev (Oli)
28-05-07, 06:36 PM
I like how you replicate the working of a standard hazard switch by not having one lol

Hazard switch got that over used from constant breakdowns that it fell out of its hole lol

The catch tank isn't that big and its lightweight ally, plus as I now don't have to worry about breathing a litre of oil every track session I can run the oil on min, saving the weight back :p

lol at all the small block peeps getting stressed and fitting a 2.0, or breaking the car!

Oli, i know you, and this isnt like you at all. Like Dar said, have a breather for a week or two, save up 200 quid and fit an XE lol

Youve put to much into this car, it would be a hell of a shame to bin it, and from a personal point of view, the Nova itself needs people like you to show its not the stereotypical hunk of chav rust everyone else thinks it is.

But, if you do break it, bagsy the polycarbs LOLOLOL

dhdev (Oli)
01-06-07, 10:33 AM
Totally fcuked off with the car. Repaired the damage after the random valve breaking incident, fitted the new cams with new lifters, belt, valve stem oil seals, HG, bolts, In/Ex gasket etc etc, got it running wed night ready fro Jamsport to map it on Thurs. The car was running fine when I left the workshop at 11pm, idling fine etc. Returned early Thurs morning to finish off getting the car ready (bonnet, grille, wheels back on) packed the car up ready to go, tried to start it and after a few failed misfiring attempts it locked solid and that was the end of it. So last time it was fixed I did 250miles this time 0miles. In total probably spent ?2.5k on bits and bobs this year and covered a massive 250miles....

Dar - it was already in the naughty zone after snapping the valve, thats why i'm so fcuked off with it, i never actually got to even drive it out the bloody naughty zone...

Jim

lol at all the small block peeps getting stressed and fitting a 2.0, or breaking the car!
Pft, never! (at the first part, no comment about the second, lol)

Gutted to hear about this Oli. I was chatting to Broster on Wednesday night about your car. He was really anxious to see how much you were going to get from it. He also said you were scared at the thought of revving it past 8k...Maybe your car overheard the conversation and got scared, hehe.

Do what you feel is right, it will be a shame not to see it embarrasing the big blocks anymore, but perhaps this is a sign to move on?

dhdev (Oli)

The engine's always been a pain in the ass, but was ultimately worth the hassle involved cos it was enjoyable. It's got to the point now where it's not fun and the only reason to keep it is to save losing thousands, but in keeping it I'd have to spend thousands more...

Jim

But i will have first dibs on Polys lol

Dar
01-06-07, 04:25 PM
If this car gets broken then it would be a damn shame. Its one of the better known Small blocks and just a credit to the Nova world in general. Oli don't do it! Sit back, cool off and hang fire for a little while. Maybe you could look in to the 1.8 small block option. Or maybe a bike engined project if the current engine is proving to be a little biatch.

draper
01-06-07, 04:30 PM
i agree, dont break it just yet. have some time away from it

dhdev (Oli)
03-06-07, 08:09 PM
Hmmmmm, seems I may have been a little hasty...
I went to PVS today and that combined with some persuasive and very generous friends (Lee Hersey in particular :thumb: ) have convinced me to hang onto the nova for a while.

So firstly let me apologise to everyone for acting like a brat and stomping my feet, unfortunately there wont be parts available (at least not just yet).

Secondly the plans are initially as follows; Fit a standard 1.6 16v with my throttle bodies bolted on and enjoy the car like that for the near future. Whilst doing that, take my broken 1.6 16v and rebuild it properly. When I say properly I don't mean 10k rpm and 2million hp, I mean strong and reliable so that whatever power it has can and will be utilised fully all the time.

So again, sorry for spitting my dummy out. Watch this space!

Good torque on the graph too!
You can really see what the benefits the bodies etc give,
At 5000rpm my pretty much standard 16xe is making almost the same power as yours, then mine trails off just before the limit, where yours rockets to 8k revs  lol

Certainly makes me want some tb's lol

Phew, just finiished reading from page 1, car is indeed a credit to you:thumb:
Couple of questions though.
What was the weight difference from the std front wings to the f/g ones?
Have you thought about a deeper front spoiler and a rear diffuser?

Nice one Oli,

Just picked up my copy and will read it now :)

dhdev (Oli)
23-12-07, 05:59 PM
Cheers guys! Whilst the car is obviously all about track use and fun, having positive comments like that from guys who know what they're talking about, certainly makes the long hours and money spent seem worth while.

:thumb:

Tom - The weight of the wings wasn't a lot different, as they're designed for Rallycross and have to retain a lot of strength.
I've been planning a proper splitter and diffuser for years now. Me and Dar had the idea about the same time and we all know how long he's had a diffuser for! I want to flat bottom the car too. I'm thinking that as the Uni I'm at is renowned for its aero work I may be able to do it as a project and use their wind tunnels, maybe create some scale models/CAD models, would be cool even if it is a slight waste of time lol

tom reid
23-12-07, 07:47 PM
Flat floor AND a diffuser will work well, just need more grunt as you'll be in top gear real quick, do it!

Ol do you have the "air craft" type buckles on your harness? as Chris gsi told me i might find it hard to get it through an mot with them!

Scott

aircraft buckles aren't strictly road legal...

scott.parker
23-05-08, 04:58 PM
Right i might buy some/borrow of the "normal" type one's and then i can get it mot'd then put the others back in lol

trackdaynova

I've never had any problems throughout ownership of my FIA harnesses with aircraft buckles... how odd...

In fact, never even heard that they're not road legal... police aren't aware in any case lol

dhdev (Oli)
23-05-08, 05:48 PM
Scott you might as well take it for MOT with the aircraft type, worst case is they notice and fail it, which'll give you 10days to find some normal ones and fit them for a free re-test.

Adam
23-05-08, 06:23 PM
What he said/\

The aircraft style ones are not road legal.
Because of them not having an industry standard type buckle iirc

Hey Oli,

I'm just about to order some fibreglass wings, due to me wanting my car lower on the whole, but my front arches won't let me...

Just a couple of questions, I intend on modifying them to accomodate standard indicators.

Will I need to add spacers in order for my 6J x 15 et49 wheels not to look odd? (ie sitting too far in) however, adding too much of a spacer will defeat the object of me getting them in the first place... ie: reduce rubbage

Just wanted your take on it, I presume you run spacers on your front wheels, but what are the sizes of your wheels? (width & offset)

Thanks in advance

Olly

novashed
26-05-08, 07:28 PM
tbh ols best thing to do would be have your steels ones flared out and re-painted

craig green
27-05-08, 04:55 PM
Likewise, I'd imagine dropping the ride height & adding spacers to the wheels will have a negative effect too. Steering will lose its accuracy.

Lee
27-05-08, 05:46 PM
3rded. Olli D can get away with it because his car is slow lol. You have a proper engine in yours, therefore I would flare your steel wings as mentioned. I plan to do mine at some point next winter as well.

Jesus the network goes down at uni for a couple of days and the vultures are in taking the piss lol
I run 25mm eibach spacers on the front, they're the hubcentric jobbies so not a total bodge :wtf: TBH from the limited track work I've done with them on, I can't fault it so far! My wheels are ET45 iirc and 7inch.
Here's a clearer pic of how they sit

I'm not saying it can't be done or anything but i would say that its not easy. Trouble is with lowering is that just about every other aspect of handling is affected. I suspect that deviating too far from std set-ups or those quoted in the competition Nova handbook (which incidentally is all geared to rallying only) might only serve to spoil the otherwise good handling charactersitics

Big thanks to Olly H and his mate Matt for coming over and helping to diagnose my mystery misfire, turns out the DIS pack is to blame. Easimap is a lovely bit of kit and I'll be investing in a £2 Ebay comm lead so I can look like a pro with my laptop hooked up
So I need to purchase a new DIS pack, any recommendations as to which are best and where to buy from would be gratefully received :thumb:

Also whilst diagnosing some problems with Olly's car we noticed that the spacers behind my rack had fallen out on one side, resulting in some quite severe rack wobble :tard: All fixed now tho, undid the ally mounts, slid some packing in behind and tightened it up! Its quite shocking how much the bulkhead flexes though

Cheers Olly and Matt!

Been struggling with cash flow lately, hence why no real updates :(
But I went and tried the Calibra's coilpack on the Nova today and.......WOW  It's so much faster than i ever remember it being, it pulls so much harder and cleaner throughout the rev range, and feels genuinely a lot faster than I can remember :D:D:D I reckon the coilpack must've been dodgy for a long time! Yeah the old coilpack was funked, it has been spluttering on start up for a while, and i'd noticed that my driving style had gradually got modified to the point that I was keeping the revs quite high to avoid large throttle openings which would cause hesitation and sluggishness, now I can give it full throttle from idle and it shoots off :D And its started torque steering and wheelspinning again  Might head up maccy D's and do some PHAT burnouts geeza! lol

What that video doesn't show is the violent torque steer I'm getting, I KNOW, torque steer on a small block

Cover and bonnet off.

This is what needs removing (Box)
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00721.jpg

Get it jacked up and on stands (Gotta love a stiff chassis!)
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00722.jpg

Diff cover off and gearbox oil drained.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00723.jpg

Then things got oily, so no progress pics. Although i'll paint a mental picture, me on my back under the car with everything undone ready to just slip the box off, give it a yank, it drops and I catch it...but its caught on something....uhoh! this thing is getting heavy...''HELP!!!'', luckily my brother comes out and frees off the linkage which was wedged on the block and it comes out!

Aye, its a 1.6 8v one i have fitted, which is completely flat. Yours looked slightly dished like a pot one.
Mines like this

Are you suggesting I could potentially save some weight :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
So should I get mine turned down more, or get another... will that handle the extra torque/power

reposted pic for comparison purposes...

Yours either takes a larger diameter clutch, or is actually a smaller diameter flywheel. Look at the position of the bolts relative to the outer diameter

Adam

That one in the pic is a 20xe one.
I have a pic of the fly on my 1600 16v on my other pc, will post it later.
But yes, mines totally flat like the xe one in the pic.

Yours is definently a pot fly....

So yes, if you fitted a 1.6 8v flat fly, and got that lightened you could save MORE weight

dhdev (Oli)

Mines not a pot fly though, the clutch sits inside the 'pot' on them, whereas mine is flat faced. It just seems mine is a bit chunky for some reason :(

Is it a gm fly? Or some lightweight billet jobbie?

Here we go, pic from Jacks corsa on migweb.
1.6 8v fly onto 1.6 16v.

IIRC Nova gsi/gte are a 200mm clutch everything else is 190mm

Cluster looks top BTW:thumb:

AHA! mine is the same as that but with a chamfer round the edge, thats how its been lightened ;) you can see the width of Jacks flywheel.

Ahhh right, i get you.
So basically the outer edge has just been ground down to an angle instead of being flat...?

dhdev (Oli)
25-08-08, 07:11 PM
Seems that way from the pics. It would make sense though, seeing as that outer edge is just wasted material.

Adam
25-08-08, 07:13 PM
Aye true.
Bet you got excited then when i mentioned the possibility of more weight saving. lol lol

dhdev (Oli)
25-08-08, 07:20 PM
I actually did :( I'm tempted to have the chamfer turned off now, just leave the ring gear on a narrow section of flywheel and leave the flywheel the current thickness where the clutch mounts, should save some of the weight that you got me excited about!

Whilst on the topic of weight saving, i think i know where you can save a bit more weight....:D

This is a pic of my shell, you would need to leave where your steering wheel mounts though.

Oh I see...not a bad idea at all :thumb: Plus I should get rid of the cross member that runs across the floor at the front of the seats, then some lightweight wheels, then a FG roof and door skins..........Sub 600kgs???:cool::cool:

You still have those cross members in? Fatty! I have a f/g roofskin for sale :p

Too much for me, I'm all about the Tesco value prices (student bum), but thanks for the offer :thumb: I think I'd probably want a cross diagonal on the cage above my head for a FG skin too, which then just adds the weight back in lol

Oli, now... I can certainly see some weight saving could be had in this photo... now I know you have a toy engine, but there is no need to have a rad fan the size of africa lol

Right....Got to work on the box after work today. Started around 12.30pm was flying along, had it all apart and cleaned up the casing a bit

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00737-1.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00738-1.jpg

Swapped the pinion over to the new cluster

Old, standard F13 cluster

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00740.jpg

New HH SCCR cluster

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00739.jpg

Weighed them SCCR 13.45kgs

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00741.jpg

Standard 13.3kgs!!!! DAMN! I've gained 150g

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00743.jpg

All the above was done in no time, I then spent ages trying to get the cluster in, but it kept stopping about 10mm shy of the casing. So I tried Lee303, but he was baffled too! So i thought I must be being a pansy and decided to gentle tighten the bolts to close the gap. Once it was back together I checked the input shaft to see if everything was spinning as it should and to my surprise it wasn't. So back apart with it all to inspect what was up....

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00745.jpg

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e296/dhdev/DSC00746.jpg

It seems the gear set is fouling the casing, probably due to loose tolerances on the casting. So I called it quits for today and will go in early monday morning and pull the diff out and machine down the casting. Also gives me time to buy gaskets and a new release bearing.

hmm, thats very odd, but it does seem to be a casting issue, pretty sure mine cleared there but fouled in another place, oh well at least its obvious enough
oh, and told you it would be heavier, better steel is more denselol

lol

Oli, this was the issue that caused me a similar problem.

What you will possibly find is that the SCCR gear near the top (the end which runs in the bearing in the casing) of the main shaft is a little bigger diameter than its helical counterpart as catches on the casing. I had to grind a little of this away (unfortunately you have to remove diff etc due to ally filings) and hey presto all was good.

It took me a bit of head scratching as its not totally obvious where its fouling the casting :tard:

HTH

Thats exactly the problem i'm having :) You can see the marks from the teeth in the last two pics :thumb:

Ah yes you can clearly see there, I couldn't see the pic yesterday (work computers block 99% of pics ).

Mine was really difficult to spot as it didn't leave any marks on the casing, bloody tolerances lol

Collected my gaskets, release bearing (rip-off from Vaux) and Oil, yesterday evening.
Came into work an hour early this morning. Cleaned up the casing (removed the swarf from the grinding that was required to fit the gearkit) Gears are back in, diff is installed and bearings preloaded. Just need to fit the selector turret, release bearing and diff cover. Pics later :thumb:
