Is it possible to change the crankshaft oil seal at the gearbox end of a 1.3/1.4 8V motor with it still in the car?
I suppose i'll have to take the gearbox off.

Yes i think you could change the seal if the block is still in the car. Would be abit of a guddle though. Someone will have done it before on here!!!
You sure the seal has gone yeh, as it would not be much fun if it was fine and you did all the work??

Yeah i'm sure, engine oil was coming from behind the flywheel and getting onto the clutch making it slip. When I removed the clutch cover there was oil on the back of it.

was the seal replace recently?
You need the flywheel off, sump off, then the main bearing cap off at that end (which is a little bugger even with the engine out of car) cause of the sealent thats holding it in place.
If you take the gearbox off though is should be a bit easier.

Yeh sounds like the seal has gone. Mah gte was like that when we took it apart, but did not know it was leaking when i drove it. could not have been leaking much.
Read and do what the haynes manual says when building it back up. With relation to the sealer that goes back in.

easiest option is to take the engine out. jsut to make the job a lot simpler to do ratehr than faffing about lying on your back etc.
mine had gone but i carried on using it for another year like that then sold it lol, if its not much oil then jsut keep spraying clutch cleaner into the inspection plate every 6-8weeks :o) bodge it and scarper lol
