Well that's made my day! The only thing I can say is the first thing I heard was what turned out to be the belt rubbing on the covers...I knew something was up so didn't rev over 2k for the half mile it ran before it died. Happy days!

I did send you a video on messenger Friday evening but you haven't viewed it yet ! I'll sort the other parts this week and stick a new belt and bolt on there and it will be good to go again

PHEW! Almost heard the sigh of relief from here lol. Great news Andrew, hope you get the machine out on track again soon, more time in the car will certainly help you gain confidence in the car before your first event. Have you got any plans in that respect?

James sorted things. Proper dowel to locate camshaft pulley and repairs to the belt cover as we could not source a new one of this 16SV type. Now need the carbs servicing as they are leaky and it's popping and banging something rotten. Will need some time back on rollers to tune up then should be good for Cadwell or Brands in March may be. Being a chicken on the carbs as not taken 45s apart before...can't be that hard right...

Carbs on the bench all serviced. Sytec service kits from Burton Power. Just got to get them back on now, bit of a pig getting them off

Carbs back on and running again, no leaking of fuel and seems to idle more evenly. I'm assuming the "popping" is pre-ignition? Thoughts anyone?? Video link added....a bit dark but it's the audio you need...

I was led to believe it's a bit lean when this happens ,was it up to temp in the vid ?

It's better when warm yes and not doing so much at higher revs

I would suggest a session on the rollers is needed just to be on the safe side

Yup. Hopefully in the next week or two will do that.

Lots since last post. The engine just never ran as nicely as it did before the cam pulley dowel issue. Carbs were serviced and rollers session suggested something else not right. Turns out valve guides damaged so engine out and the following done...

Gates belt
Gates water pump
Goetz rings
Secondhand Hepolite flat top pistons
Glyco bearings ends and mains
ARP flywheel bolts
Elring Head bolts
Elring top end gasket set
Elring lower gasket set
KS oil pump
Torx back plate bolts
Piper double valve springs
Piper mechanical profile camshaft
Piper followers
Thicker spring platforms made
Crank balanced
Flywheel lightened and balanced
Block skimmed
Block honed
Head skimmed
Valves lapped
Head assembled with new stem seals mechanical followers adjusted for valve gap clearance original followers, steel spring retainers and REC valves used.
Block cleaned and painted, assembled using original ARP con-rod bolts, secondhand pistons fitted to original rods, removed most of dents from sump and painted, supplied longer bolts/washers for sump fixing, spacer made for timing belt back plate all timed up, standard pulley used (original was damaged) re-drilled to accept locating pin giving correct timing

Compression ratio is now a far better 11.5:1 rather than the original 10.5:1

The head is actually the Blydenstein big valve head I got off Boffer8 (Ben) some while ago, seemed like a good time to change things.

Anyway all back in the car now. Will update after a session in the rollers again...fingers crossed

Looks stunning. Curious as to what it'll do on the rollers once it's bedded in. 👍
