This car was purchased new by my sister in 1987, she bought it before going over to
Germany to work before returning to the UK in the early 1990s bringing it back with her.
She kept it until 2010, when she mentioned that it was possibly time to get rid for some
reason I told her I would take it away, which she was pleased about.
Being the wrong side of fifty and not having messed around with cars for many years I
didn't really realise what I was getting into....but have since realised once these cars
get inside your head there's no going back!!!http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/32dd4d65.jpg[IMG]http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/ec755fef.jpg
back she came, so shiny inside and out, but also showing up how much repair work was required.
Here she is sitting in the bodyshop after picking her up from the blast workshop.

So after taking this project on where the hell do you start!! The car was showing all
the usual signs, wings gone, rear qtr arches starting to go, front end, rear end etc etc
I decided on a light restoration and got it through a test without to many problems.
I ran it for about 10 months and then last September after going to various shows, decided to get things done properly!!
The strip down started again,
http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/9ecae54d.jpg

I completely stripped her down and loaded her up on the trailer to take for blasting at gentle blast in north wales

[QUOTE=masseyk@deeside.ac.uk;2065846]This car was purchased new by my sister in 1987, she bought it before going over to

She kept it until 2010, when she mentioned that it was possibly time to get rid for some

After a light restoration! I ran it until September 2011 and then decided to start from scratch and do things properly, you guys with experience know all
the problem areas, of which there were many!! I removed the engine, got her up nice and high in the garage and started stripping her down in earnest.
As she was going to be bead blasted I also had to remove the original vauxhall underseal (yes there was some still there, and boy was it stuck well)
That done it was onto the back of the trailer and off to Gentle blast in Llandudno, two days later it was ready to be picked up, completely naked and
shiny (the shell not me!) we reloaded her onto the trailer for dropping off at the bodyshop who were going to carry out the work, that was last Jan. Since
then I have been collecting new parts, travelling up to the North east for new gm inner wings, outer wings, front end, rear end, doors, thanks Carl, a
P.N.G member and top man, down to South Wales to pick up a new rear qtr panel, the majority of the rest of the stuff I purchased from Germany, cills,
rear chassis leg, front chassis leg repair panel, any other parts I've got from Vauxhall Green, very helpful, Pro-tech motorsport, Harry Hockly, Autovaux,
L.M.F and the great bay of e. Everything is genuine gm, except obviously the motorsport stuff.
I do have pictures of everything, but as some of you may have already noticed I.T is not really my thing (please stop laughing, and wait until you get to my age)

At the moment the shell is on the spit in the bodyshop, all the welding and strengthening is almost completed and she should be
going in for paint within the next fortnight.http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/33f3cfb2.jpg

WOW!! Looks like a real project, the quality of it is going to be amazing!

Not your usual, lower it, stick on some bigger brakes and give it a quick blowover with some paint!!

Very impressive.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for that, I thought after seeing the standard at some of the shows I needed to do it properly otherwise I would be wasting my time,
the body shop are really keeping me waiting though, although the standard of work is excellent, the lad who is doing the welding/bodywork
was employed by demon tweeks at one time working on their rally cars so he does know what he's doing.

Ah right, is it being done on mates rates then? As more often, they tend to do it ib their free time and not as a priority.

It will be worth it though, no point rushing it for a half ar$ed job, take your time and make it right :)

All the best with the project mate I will be keeping an eye on this thread

Wow, thanks for those comments guys, wasn't really expecting much interest but that has made my day!!!
Sorry about the crap thread, I'm a bit old for all this threads and posts etc l.o.l . Steve, no mates rates, the lad just works for the firm who are doing the work,
if any one remembers Antnio's white opel manta in total vauxhall issue no121 april 2011 there the ones doing the work.
Got loads more photos, could anyone explain the 15 picture rule to me?

Thanks again

owning it for 23 years I felt I had to keep it on the road and it just turned into a major project from last September, as they do having read nearly all the
projects on this site.

Hi Guys,

Again thanks for all the comments, really value what you chaps say, Mr nova sport, the sooner you start the sooner you finish, Simon I hope I can live up
to that billing l.o.l, Mr leggattr, yes I have some pics of when I did a lightish restoration when I first picked it up, I'll pop them on as long as I'm not boring
people, thanks Mark appreciate those words, boss, this might sound daft, but I'm not sure, I picked them up at Billing last year and had them refurbished and
then the fools stuck the old tyres back on!!! While were talking about wheels does anyone think that the 195-60r14 tyres that are on at the moment will cause a
problem regards catching? they seemed ok when I tried them but when I asked about tyres in demon tweeks they just laughed at me and said they wouldn't fit/
cause problems.

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/acfebe7b.jpg

As I mentioned before, it was only after going to Billing and some of the other shows that I decided I wanted things doing to
a better standard than I was capable of achieving, hence the stripdown again and in a bodyshop.

Ace thread, it looks like you are speccing it with a lot of grp_A parts, not just a resto.

I love Black SR's, I'm not sure there are any others in the club!

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
23-08-12, 08:14 PM
Thanks Craig, well spotted with the grp A parts, it wasn't my intention in the begining to do that it just sort of happened
I intend to keep it black, but a newer vauxhall one, a metallic , think it's starmist black.

Nice thread :). mk1 sr's are my favourite novas especially the early ones. Loving the garage aswell looks mint! Did you build it yourself?

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
23-08-12, 08:43 PM
Thanks both, regards the garage Ewan yes I did build it, but my day job is a lecturer in construction so it was pretty straightforward,
It gets roasting in there when I fire up the woodburning stove, I could quite easily live in there but don't tell her indoors.

Regarding the photos, I just didn't want to bore people to death but as long as people enjoy looking at them I'll keep posing them!!!

Yep, RFX's.

Where have you sourced all your new panels and parts?

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
24-08-12, 01:46 PM
Hi Mr Novasport,

I started as soon as I got the car really, a lot of the panels I bought from Carl, a member on here, some nice trips up to County Durham, I managed to
everything genuine, a lot from opel-classics, some from carparts connexions, vauxhall green, and I've paid far to much for some stuff from e-bay.

Panels:
Two new doors
Two new inner wings
Complete front end
Two new outer wings
Complete passenger side rear quarter
Rear end

The one thing I didn't get which was on e-bay was a brand new sport tailgate, and it was only three miles away, but it did go a bit silly, but
as they say, go and find another one!!
Front passenger side chassis repair panel
Complete front drivers side chassis leg (didn't need to use this)
Rear drivers side chassis leg
Two full cills

25-08-12, 03:38 PM
Hi Mr Novasport,
The one thing I didn't get which was on e-bay was a brand new sport tailgate, and it was only three miles away, but it did go a bit silly, but
as they say, go and find another one!!

I dropped lucky on a new early tailgate at Billing about 6 years ago, was at the first autojumbler I came to when I walked in. Paid about £30-40 from memory.
Got it painted with my new shell but it is still sat in my garage unused.

I bid on the tailgate aswell but it got it a bit silly so I left it.

Got a few used ones and a mate has just dragged me out another new one from a dealer but it has been painted.

Might be letting a good used one go soon if you need one.
Worth me delivering aswell to have a look at the SR in progress if you need one. I have a friend in Prestatyn that I bought my Sport from. I pop up to North Wales every so often to say hello.
Good luck with the build

Hi guys,
Tahir, Southie, Andy and Paul thanks for those comments very very much appreciated. Vinny, I had noticed you were up the coast in Rhyl, wouldn't
mind popping down and checking out your projects, did you get the seats you were after? Rich, I wondered when the engine question would rear
its head, so many people have voiced their opinion on what I should do, I love what some of the lads have done red top wise, but that's not
for me, I've picked up a 1.6 and I think were going to take it out to 1760, that was the last plan anyway, I'll keep you updated.
Craig, the stash has built up nicely, and rather expensively over the last 12 months, It's easy to forget what you have bought, I ended up
buying two new rear indicators as I'd forgotten I bought one six months previously!!!
With regards the tailgate Mr novasport, mine was ok, no rust or anything it's just that ,as you well understand, when you start getting new
panels you want to try and get everything new which is pointless if your original is ok i.m.o anyway.
Maybe give me some notice next time your coming up this way, I'm only about 17 miles from Prestatyn and I'm often up that way because I
have family who live there. Kettle is always on in the garage, maybe share some of that knowledge regarding the nova you've got.

Cheers All

mk1nova_rich
26-08-12, 05:43 PM
That sounds good, always refreshing to go with your own plans rather than feel you have to keep it original or just bunging in the obligatory 2.0 16v lol at least it will be possible to return to standard if you ever feel the need :thumb:

Thanks Mark much appreciated spoke to the body shop on Friday and they said they should be on it full time from Tuesday
when a couple of the lads are back from holiday, fingers crossed. Rich, you read my mind, I've kept all the original bits, haven't
sold anything, so I could easily return it to standard. It's a struggle sometimes to go your own way with projects like this, as
you mentioned everyone has an opinion, but at the end of the day it's your hard earned money going into it so you should have the
last say.
I'll try and post some more pictures tomorrow of parts i've collected if I can make it into the garage.

Thanks again guys for the positive comments, they really do spur you on, however corny that might sound, as most of you will understand.

Acerliam, the parts are building up nicely in the garage, it does get expensive when you start adding up what you've spent in the last 12 months though!!
Novasport: the seat situation has been bugging me to be honest, I bought the blue buckets from demon tweeks with subframes, but after using them for
about four outings decided they weren't for me, so I got some recaro's, comfy but not sure, then I thought about getting the originals re-covered and
made some enquiries about the original cloth from Germany, which I was told is expensive, but available. Bolsters on the originals, as usual, have worn but I
have seen worse. So as you can see undecided at the moment.
Southie: no pressure then l.o.l.............listen, what some of the guys have done on here is absolutely awesome, I can only do so much.. lets see where it goes.
NovaOO: Always nice to put a face to a name? good day at Boddlwyddyn (sp) good turnout and good conversation, thought you might have been at Capesthorne
Hall on Sunday?
Scott, sorry about the indicators, l.o.l they've been on the garage shelf for so long I forgot I even had them.
Mark, if there's one thing I am sure about 100% it's the work the body shop are doing, they are passionate about what they do and have taken photos all the
way from the start to where thy are at present, so hopefully no worries on that one.
Nova4sport: It does take a while to get what you need/want but you do get there eventually ...

I can never remember how BODELWYDDAN spelt either that is why I called it the "car" show !
As for shows I opted for the nearer Tatton show a week earlier but at least the novas were represented at capesthorne.
Sorry I cannot offer much in the technical department but I can always provide you with some encouragement to finish off the task you have started.
Keep up the good work

Just a small update, after speaking to the bodyshop last week they mentioned it would be beneficial if I got rid of the sunroof, so there's a
roof, non-sunroof on it's way over from Germany.

Have you considered getting this re registered when it's done? I'm not sure on the exact rules but I've seen a couple of cars before that were made from a number of new parts re-registered on a new plate. For example an R33 Skyline that was built from Nissan's parts catalogue on an 08 plate.

Would be kinda cool to have a 12/62/13 plate nova depending on when it's finished :d

Brave decision on the roof skin. How is it being sent? If OCP are sending it, don't expect it to be straight. Keith had several sets of doors sent over which are a lot more sturdy than a roof skin and every one got damaged. He ended up going over to collect them himself.

Hi guys, to be honest I did think twice about the roof but I'm in to deep now l.o.l, went down to pick it up tonight from the local depot along with a
few other bits and Conza's mudflaps, when I unwrapped it I have to say it was fine, well wrapped with plenty of bubble wrap, so I'll drop it off at the bodyshop
tomorrow and pray that it's the last body panel that they ask me to get!!

Did it come in a cardboard box, if so it did well to get to you undamaged!

Are you going for an Opel GT theme? I see you got some check straps, I got some a while back too.

Are the bodyshop going to crimp weld the skin on as per factory?

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
04-09-12, 09:19 PM
My heart was beating rather quickly when I opened it up I must admit, but so far so good. With regard to a theme, I really don't have anything set in stone,
if I like how it looks I tend to go for it, at the moment the body is going in black metallic, bumpers in near original grey, with window surrounds, door handles etc
the same, wheels at the moment are silver, but don't know if I'll stick with these yet, and then I want to introduce some yellow, yes, yellow, somewhere, whether
it's some old style stickers or something I'm not sure yet.
The fixing of the roof I'll just leave to the shop, I don't have enough knowledge to tell them how to go about it, I suppose this is where the trust element comes in
and they are a shop you can trust, thank goodness.

Cheers Keith

Hi

Very impressed with this. Pity I hadnt seen this earlier and I could have sold you a non sunroof virtually rust free shell from Spain. Bulkhead mods the main work. Looking forward to the end product. I may be able to source some parts as I travel to Belgium, Holland, Germany and Spain quite often and know to many Novas in European Scrappies.

All the best Nick.

Hi all just a small update, as the shell is still in the bodyshop I thought I'd get the box sorted, It's an F13 Quaife s/c close ratio gearkit,Quaife ATB diff,
put some new rings in and new selector forks which were slightly worn, as the pictures show, It's being cleaned before etch priming, some of the covers
have been sent away for powder coating.

Hi Guys, just a small update, I managed to locate a new gm drivers side rear quarter panel to go with the passenger one I already had, I dropped this off at the

quarter panel should be fitted which should complete the bodywork.

what size engine you got going in it ? original 1300 or something else?

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
30-11-12, 06:04 PM
Hi Edd, this is the one part of this project that has given me a bit of a headache, so many people want you to do what they want, so I decided I was going to stay
small block but with the 1.6 and not the 1.3 sb engine, I did want to keep the 1.3 but got talked out of it, which annoys me a bit when I think about it, I don't really
know that much on the engine side, but I've got a specification of sorts l.o.l

Hi Ewan I'm afraid it's to late for that, the 1.6 has been bored out and is being built as we speak, I will keep the 1.3 and probably rebuild it over the
next twelve months, if I ever take it back to original at least I'll have the engine ready to drop in.

Hi guys, managed to get a few days in the garage over the break to do a bit, took Edds advice and started off fitting the loom which went a little better than I thought it would,
going to have to cut into it to join the dta system, I'm building up to that!! Put the bilsteins on the rear, fitted new rear window rubbers and glass, dropped a couple of ltrs of waxoyl
in, and trial fitted the front and rear http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/1-01-13013_zps641ab89b.jpglights. Dont go back to work until Monday so should get a fair bit more done all being well.

02-01-13, 11:15 AM
Hi guys, thanks for the comments, with regards to painting the inside white, I'm not 100% sure about the carpets and trim yet, I may leave them out, I didn't
want the inside looking to drab with black paint and grey/black flocking, the inside being white should contrast nicely against the grey/ black, those are just my
thoughts.
Thanks Edd, it is so difficult to take your time when all you want to do is put new bits on!!, as you well know.
Hi Simon, good spot on the brakes, nothings fitted yet, in fact their still under the stairs in the boxes, hoping to have a go at them this weekend, I'll double check those
nipples l.o.l.
Thanks John, glad you approve.

Hi both, I was looking around easter time to be on the road, the engine should be up and running by the end of Feb, that gives me a couple of months to finish bits off etc.
With regards to the back seats, again at the moment I'm not 100% sure, might leave them out to start with, just carpet, folded down ? I'll try a few different things first, I
don't want to retrim the original burberry because it's in really good condition so I might find an old set and retrim them if I need to.

Absolute qulaity build. Great parts collection. It's amazing what a bit of searching and a dealer that can be bothered to help source parts can yield. Typical of a Nova build. You go in for a light restoration and you end up getting everything cleaned, renewed, uprated lol I know how that feels.

Love the colour... black is a favourite of mine. Love the 1.3 with twin carbs. If I had to do another Nova project it would be along the lines of this.

Nice touch on the flocked door cards. I think the original grey ones can look a little cheap sometimes but those look very plush!

Hi guys, after last nights comments on the mirrors I went straight back into the garage tonight and tried the new original ones, still undecided is the verdict. Simon I was a bit worried the
door cards might look a bit "chavvy" but I think I'm happy with the way it looks

personal opinion, stick with the early ones, you see alot less around :)

i think it depends if you fit the bumpstrips and 1.3SR tailgate decal, IMO the mirrors would look out of place then

I agree their Keith....... I had one early mirror on mine originally and changed that for two normal nova style mirrors.

Hi Nick, I think I'll do it the other way around thinking about it, I'll start off with the originals and then if I decide I don't like the look I'll change them.

Hi all, well another weekend in the garage, 6 inches of snow up here anyway so I couldn't really go anywhere else!

Got the passenger side door on, went to fit the window trim and found out I'd been sent two right hand bottom sections instead of a left and right,
trial fitted the bonnet and the gaps all around seem pretty good. I also tried a carpet I had in stock, please don't shout because it's not the right
colour, I just fancied a blue one at the time.
I don't know what peoples opinions are on stickers on their cars but I do fancy having some somewhere, so I had a little play today.

Mmm, not sure on the carpet.
Did you get the decal OK?

Edd

I think the carpet looks out of place tbh

Are you fitting the bumpstrips on the side of the car?

Graeme

Is that the base model blue as aposed to the Antibes blue, doesn't do it for me but neither does all the white, love everything else though

I kinda like the contrasting colours .. inside against the outside and the blue carpet contrast the white. I like contrasting colours, im working toward a miami blue/matt black/yellow .. Fair play to being a lil different :)

Sorry bad english in sentence :/

Thanks Conza, Ritch I got the decal, fine thanks, Edd I don't think I'll be fitting the bumpstrips at the moment. Graeme, I'm not sure about the colour of the carpet T.B.H
I just thought I'd fit it to see what it looked like, as I've mentioned before, nothing is set in stone on this build, I'm trying a few different things and learning as I go along,
I also enjoy reading other peoples opinions.

Thanks Keith

Hi guys,

Been busy in work lately so not had much time in the garage, but, I have managed to do a few things;

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/paulshelp006_zpsa6040ced.jpg

Fitted the rear screen and the decal from Ritch

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/paulshelp004_zps41003340.jpg

Fitted the rear section of the roll screen, waiting for the front screen before fitting the rest

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/paulshelp002_zps4b8e4595.jpg

Front bumper tested and in position ready for final fitting, the number plate will be removed and stickers on the
bonnet I think (is that still allowed)

http://i1077.photobucket.com/albums/w468/kmass1/paulshelp008_zps7fd014a5.jpg

Couldn't resist putting a few stickers on either

Cheers boys

This build just gets better every time I look the attention to detail is spot on .and the brakes need some transparent wheels as its a shame to cover them up

Taken me a while to read but well worth it. Cracking build, I like the way you have gone for everything you like and against the "typical" nova build. Just shows there's no end to your imagination. Looking forward to your next update

Hi guys,

Thanks Chris, your dead right about the alcon brakes, if they work half as good as they look they should be wicked.
Josh, don't think the mrs would be to happy if I started calling the Nova beautiful instead of her l.o.l, but I know what you mean.
Glad you still like it Tahir, never quite sure people will when you post the next instalment.
Very kind of you Simon, I never set out, as I've mentioned with a set plan, it's just evolved,(that sounds so much better than, I made it up as I went along)
The next update should be front heated screen in, rose joints sorted out onto steering rack, bonnet lifters fitted and front wings removed ready for dropping
off at A+ M conversions for the engine to be fitted.

Cheers Keith

Hi guys, been a bit tied up with work etc lately but the car needs to be dropped off for engine fitting next Friday so I've had to
try and do a few more jobs, these include, heated front screen fitted, new fuel cap fitted, cage completed, hydraulic handbrake
ready to fit one night this week, pedal box not arrived as yet, harnesses ready to fit but might not have time, here's how she looks
at the moment:

The wheels are only temporary, looking for some sparco oz, comp th, or something similar if anyones got any for sale!
