Hi all, a big day today, it felt like waving goodbye to an old friend as the nova was loaded onto the trailer for dropping off at the garage for engine fitting.
Once again I have to mention my mate Gary.V.B , a work colleague and top man who once again came up trumps with the trailer and transport.

So there she is in the garage waiting for the engine to be fitted, I will update as soon as possible with more pictures of
the engine going in and hope to be driving out of there in around a months time.
Cheers Keith

Thanks tahir, I love reading about other members cars in the likes of T.V but i'm not sure if I would deserve one as I've had to rely on other people to a certain
extent, unlike others on here who are far cleverer than I am and have managed to do nearly everything themselves.
Thanks Keith

Thanks all
Keith
stunning engine bay there Keith, makes me want to start again lol
How wide are those wheels ? 6J ? you might get away with no rub with that size, may need to go 175 tho

Cheers Edd, if mine ends up looking half as good as yours I'll be well chuffed !!!!!!!!!!

Bit risky without IMO, small stones etc

I agree with Edd though regarding cam belt covers though.

Well, i've now sat and read the whole thread, i can only say Fu*k. What a fantastic rebuild. You've done so many great small details that get forgotten, finding all the parts new that you have is brillant work too as that isn't a easy job.
Everything you've done has been done to such a high standard too, so so impressed. Keep the good work up, gonna be watching this much more.

I was looking to buy those wheels myself when they were for sale. But 6J is a bit close for me.
Tyres wise yep - Yokohama A539 in 185/50 x 14. Around £50 each.
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
28-03-13, 10:20 PM
Thanks Peester, I'm still not 100% sure t.b.h, the thing is I could do with trying one first before buying the new tyres, so I think I'll pick up
an old knackered one first, put it on, and see if everything is ok.
Thanks Keith

Are you not fitted a cam belt cover?
Bit risky without IMO, small stones etc
Definitely put one on, that lovely cam pulley will get battered up if not, it doesn't take much.
Awesome work as per Keith...... Regarding the covers could you not speak to someone like toovey/swindon to have a similar guard made up? I know they do them for the xe/let but unsure about small blocks etc.
Nick.
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
30-03-13, 07:42 PM
Hi Nick, that sounds like a good idea, I'll have a ring around next week and see what I can find.
Keith
the lad who is doing the welding/bodywork
was employed by demon tweeks at one time working on their rally cars so he does know what he's doing.
I'd take that with a pich of salt.... i know a few guys who work in tweeks (i live in wrexham) and they're a bunch of idiots. im sure he's done a great job but dont let him fool you, a turd is still a turd even if its covered in glitter.
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
31-03-13, 12:13 PM
Hi Conad, I live in Mold, I know what you mean about tweeks there basically sales people in the shop and I do feel that they can be quite patronising at times, the lad who did
the body work worked for a firm that prepared their cars so didn't actually work for them direct. The firm who carried out the work has a very good reputation, so no need to worry.
Thanks Keith

Great work on this since I last looked. You have done the car proud.
What does your sister think? Has she seen the progress on her old car?
Amazing build ! Love the attention to detail and the new genuine parts ;)
You're from mold? I'd love to come have a nosey 1 day. Fair enough if it was a contract company, Iddidn't want to step on any toes with my comment.
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
31-03-13, 07:49 PM
Hi guys, thanks very much Craig, really pleased that people seem to like the way I've gone with this, my sister loves the fact that the car has been saved after having it
for over 20 years, don't think I'll be letting her drive it though when it's ready, it was never one of her strong points, L.O.L (Sorry Joy).
I think sourcing the genuine parts is all part of the build, but I never realised how much time you could spend looking for a single item, appreciate the comments w88rdy.
Hi Conad, not a problem with your comments mate, everyone is entitled to say what they feel, your more than welcome to pop down when she's ready, I'll let you know.
Thanks Keith

Hi all,
Well I'm almost there, m.o.t on Monday tax and insurance Tuesday, been for a spin today and it was slightly different to driving my vauxhall combo

very foooking scary.
Things left to do include : fit wheels and new tyres
samco hoses
carb filters
passenger harness and a few other bits, heres how she looks:

Ok guys, first job this weekend is..................................stickers off.
goods the job now, nice project thread, just realised your the fella I think I bought the chassis leg from /
If you like stickers keep them don't worry about what ever one else said it your car at end if day
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
02-05-13, 10:17 PM
Hello KB, yes I'm the one you bought the chasis leg from, have you fitted it yet?
Gte-87, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and what one person likes about a dozen others will hate, I'll try it without the stickers, doesn't mean they wont go back on l.o.l
don't need it for my car , bought it just to have it, just in case
Don't take them off on everyone else's account. I'm sure someone would photoshop them off to give you an idea of what she'd look like.
Car turned out swell fella. Hats off to you. Enjoy.

Hi Keith just like to say looking spot on! Reminds me of my first Sr (but mine was not built like your) I have seen this car before it was fully re assembled and believe me it's a nova owners dream pretty flawless, and I have just got the nova bug big-time again after seeing it.
I've been a nova person a long time and I've not seen a build as good as yours.
Hopefully I will have a road worthy car soon and I can get about in a nova instead of a van!
Also Keith is the yoda of part finding I kid you not.
See you soon mate Dave

05-05-13, 09:31 PM

Front looks a million times better
Will you be fitting the side vinyl and bumpstrips?
Will you be fitting the side vinyl and bumpstrips?
Was thinking this myself.
Looking great mate.
Looks fantastic! I'd say your a set of vinyl/bump strips away from the best sr restoration to date. However that doesn't take anything away from how special it currently looks. I really hope you attend billing with it as I know many of us would love to have a look round it!

I think the vinyl and bump strips will make the car, very nice example.
Dont like to pick fault in what is a superb build but the finish on the bumper and plough just does not look right imo. It needs to be more of a matt finish. Is the black metallic now?

At the moment its semi-gloss on the bumpers, the actual colour doesn't show up very well on the photos, think I'll live with it for the time being.

Hi Guys, thought I might share the latest news with you all as I haven't posted anything for a while, after reaching around 800 miles in the nova and running well I was
coming home from a local show when I lost 3rd and 4th gear, managed to limp home and stuck it in the garage for a week.
I thought it might just be the selector but no such luck, gearbox came out and a full rebuild was required. The nova has put another 100 miles on the road since then and
all seems ok, so this week she went back for mapping, quite a respectable result really i.m.o 201 bhp, (before anybody starts asking for proof etc I have seen the video
and I will post it on here as soon as I get it.

Hi guys, been extra busy later in college lately so no time for posting, so what's been going on? Well, after getting the car taxed, tested etc I managed to put around 800 trouble free
miles on the clock. I went down to my first show where the car had a lot of interest with lots of questions being asked, good day or so I thought!! on the way home I lost 3rd and 4th gear,
as luck would have it the show was pretty local to me so I made it home, and stuck it in the garage thinking (hoping) it's probably the selector. No such luck, out came the gearbox for a
second full rebuild!! Since then I've had it in for mapping where she made 201 bhp which I was rather pleased about.
For those who can't be bothered reading heres some pics.

201 mate I need some of that I'm just snowed under here but 2 weeks and I'm on it with mine then. got loads sorted now so hopefully make a dent in all the work needed.
What was with the gear box?
And details of that show as want to do some this year, I'm thinking of doing retro rides fill the van with parts and have a van boot sale outside.
masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
25-06-13, 11:02 AM
The F13 box s.c cr with quaife was going fine but something to do with freewheeling sections and a couple of pins sheared buts its sweet at the moment.
Bodelwyddan show is really good, loads of cars, I usually join the vauxhall drivers stand, it's on 21st Sunday in July, good idea with the van but the amount
of parts you've got an arctic wagon might be more suited l.o.l.

Would love to meet up some time Riggy, just tell me where and when, I'm sure Vinny would come he's only down the coast and any others we drag there!!
Glad you boys like the way she's turned out, just got back from a brilliant run out, going really sweet.
Would love to make all the shows but at the moment the gearing is much more suited to the lanes/ roads where I live rather than motorways, for eg: at 90mph
I would be pulling around 7500/8000 revs so not really fair on the engine, over the winter I will probably change the box to an f16 and gear it to give me a chance to
cruise in 5th rather than asking the engine to work as hard as it is at the moment, so the shows I will attend will be no more than around 50mile away, although I will
be at Billing although I'll be in the mrs bog standard Astra!!

What colour did you paint the bumpers?

masseyk@deeside.ac.uk
26-06-13, 12:33 PM
Hi John, the bumper colour was pretty close to the original, not sure of the paint code, as above, due to the type of gearing i've got at the moment
it really wouldn't be fair to stick it on the motorway so may well have to leave Billing to next year.

06-02-14, 06:35 PM
Hi guys, apologies for taking so long to reply been really busy in college lately, no more stickers I'm afraid, stickergate has well and truly ended!!!!
The changes Nick, revolve around the gearbox issues I had which prevented me from bringing the nova to Billing last year. As previously mentioned
the revs were around 7500 at 85-90 mph....way to much, so I kept the distances quite short last year as it wasn't fair on the engine, so I've got
an F20 dog box going in, just waiting for a few bits from quaif (about 12 weeks after ordering) along with a new set of HH shafts etc and the HH internal
shifter. The ratios should enable the engine to maintain its speed going up through the gears and fifth should drop the revs and enable it to cruise along
at much lower revs than before.
That sounds as though I understand what I'm talking about........I don't really but that's the general idea.....
Hi Phil I'm only in the Mold area mate if you ever want to pop up this way, garage doors always open and the kettle is always on...
Cheers all

27-05-14, 08:15 PM
Hi Southie....six gears would be nice but the big fifth that's in the new box certainly relieves the stress on the engine, elite transmissions have done all the calculations
and say it should be good to around 130...135mph don't think I'll be doing that any time soon !!!! What it does need is the all in one digital speedo set up as the old clocks
are way out of sync with the d.t.a.......but that will have to wait for a while..

After removing the seat and shifter and spending an age masking up, I filled her out where required, etch primer, 2 x high build primer followed by base coat
and 2 x clear.......the journey down was fine and the gearbox performed superbly, although the ratios are extremely close I felt comfortable driving it and only

In not long back from a road trip up to see Keith and his nova.
The he pictures do not do this car justice. It really is a fantastic car and built with care and attention. It's rare to come across any car that has been built to this standard. Keith really has taken his time in building this the way he wanted.
And
keith is genuinely a really nice bloke and easy to chat too.
A great eat car and a great owner. Best combination

Great to meet up yesterday, I only hope you managed to get some of that inspiration you were looking for !! Dave, after reading the last two posts
I'm going to spend this morning polishing my halo I think !!! (out in the nova really )

I'm gonna throw a few night shifts into the car. Nothing like a couple of 14 hours graft that can't push the car forward.

Hi all, well this week has been a one of the worst for quite a while with regards to the nova.
After having a slight fuelling issue and fitting a new pump, the clutch plate decided to give up so new £200 plate fitted,
On the dyno later, you know what's coming, the engine went bang !!
So after much deliberation and with the daughters wedding fast approaching, a house move, and my other half taking
early retirement I've decided I'm moving on from the nova and sadly she will be broken up over the coming weeks for
parts, so any one who may be looking for things such as pair 45 webbers, dog box with quaife diff, s.p.a clocks etc
keep a look out over the coming weeks. All the parts that I've bought along the way have been the best I could find
so I'm sure you fast boys out there will find something you may need.
Thanks Keith
Gutted to see this Keith! Very unexpected!! Can you please drop me a line with price on shell and front brakes. I will pm you my number. All the best!
nick.

Keith,
sorry to hear about your engine throwing its internals. :(
Any idea what caused the engine to desintegrate? Spun bearing shell or something? If there's anything we can learn from this, then please share.
Good luck,
Niek
Omg. What a shock. Is it not worth throwing in a replacement engine to just get the car going.
masseyk
02-07-15, 03:42 PM
Hi guys.....after the initial shock of engine failure I've decided to get up and go again.....picked up a vx220 turbo
with less than 20,000 on the clock the other day.......soooo watch this space !!!
Cheers
A what's the plans with the nova then? Just gonna leave it for a bit or sell on and play with vx

You putting the engine in the nova
masseyk
02-07-15, 08:57 PM
Hi Dave...s.r.s......only bought the engine....it was still in the car when we went down.....heard it running checked it out with the equipment that plugs in
everything was as it should be.....so it will be stripped checked...new gaskets etc..tweaked slightly and into the nova it goes...
That's fantastic news Keith! Even if it does mean I don't get your stoppers lol. Hope to catch up at billing if your making the trip?
Nick.

Brilliant news Keith. Keep the engine as std so you can enjoy the nova more. That way you can go out and abuse it and have fun.
My my rebuilt has gone really well this week. I haven't uploaded pics on here but I have on the face book page.

So Keith did you decide in the end to get this sorted out for keeping or is it now another memory of a cracking build?
masseyk
23-08-15, 07:48 PM
Hello mr Southie..........yes she's getting sorted.....I'm moving house this coming week, so she's off to the
workshop on weds.....the v.x 220 motor is being stripped down atm to check everything is as it should be
on a 17,000 mile motor. Having a tank made to sit in the boot with the pumps and everything on show, as well
as a stainless exhaust and manifold. I need the daughters wedding and the house move over with first though !!
Cheers Keith

HI will....Cost around £1200......
I don't think I've seen any nova project go to this extreme near enough new car all new panels in at top quality work by the looks of the pictures . Credit where credit is due you have done a great job.
I started reading the whole build from page 1 with 30%battery halfway through battery went i has to plug it in and read the rest couldn't leave it haha well done . Wish I could source the parts you got for yours I'm struggling finding 2 mk1 gm front wings let alone anything else

Thanks Will, its tight on the alternator side but it sits in very well without any cutting, as long as they both run as well as we
expected Josh !! I made 270 on the dyno which is just where i wanted to be....
