I think i have to agree it looks better,i thought it would be slightly comfier with the steels as i'm running a different tyre size but it's actually a harder ride for some reason?

I've not been brave enough to do that sort of distance yet mate lol I only really go to local shows with it as i can't suffer driving it long distances,it's fine for a blast now and again but i like the refinement of a modern car.

Hello mate credit to you with your gte. I was just browsing and came across your thread. I was and kind of still am a massive fan of red nova gtes, ive owned 3 in the past including a 1.6 turbo.

Check the links below if you've not already seen them which might be of help.

I would change the bumper strip to a slightly darker red as that was factory {which I never got round to doing on mine} and deffo change pillar vinyl to dark grey again as factory.

Hope you enjoy

I still like the three spokes but i just fancied a change mate, not that i'm bored of the car or anything it's just that with it being on a classic policy i'm limited to what i can do to it....don't worry i wont ruin it's originality, that would just be wrong.

Hello mate and thanks for the comment, unfortunately I don't but looking at your I wish I did. I had the car for like 5 years and thought I'd never sell it after all the work gone in but hey we always want something else. I replaced it with a fully restored Series 1 custom Escort RS Turbo which was one of those cars I said I'd get if I didn't have a nova, that was an awesome car too.

Mate, my GTE was insured under a classic car policy with the mods, wheels and uprated suspension kit, as long as you declare it doesn't really effect the premium. I had a Bilstein B10 suspension kit (shocks & springs) and with the 15" cav slabs, it absolutely transformed the handling, going around roundabouts was like being on rails haha plus the factory GTE suspension was just too high esp the front and don't do the car justice.

Keep up with the good work mate.

in for it's mot yesterday having covered a huge 450 miles since the last one, unsurprisingly never needed anything but on the way there i decided that as much as i love the look of the wheel trims i cant suffer the harsh ride,it was so much better with the alloys which is strange? The alloys have 175 65 14 tyres and the steels have 185 60 14? I didnt think there would be that much difference...can anybody shed any light?

elgan
12-04-14, 11:23 AM
get the tyres swapped. that will be your only difference ride wise.

I might do that eventually if i stick with the steels, that has just confirmed that i wont lower it now..as much as i know its an old car and unrefined by modern standards i think it would drive me mad. #OLD FART lol

Harsh ride? What shocks are you running if you don't mind me asking? Please don't say "black Bilsteins" as they are utter sh!te for both comfort and handling.

No mate, the suspension is standard but if anybody had any suggestions as to what is a good spring/shocks combination that would be great as i'm thinking of changing it as it does roll a bit on the standard setup.

Well despite everything else being renewed or replaced when it was being restored the shocks that were on it when i bought it as a rolling shell looked ok so with money being tight i only replaced all four springs...so probably the shocks could be aftermarket cheapies.

Bilstein wins hands down for ride comfort, decent lowering and handling. Don't have the part number for this kit to hand, but back in the day Courtenay sold them as "sportpack" IIRC. Perhaps anyone can provide a bit more info on this?
Oh btw do NOT buy the black Bilstein shocks - these are rubbish as I found out with my GSi.

Looking good! If you want to uprate the suspension I highly recommend Koni adjustable front shocks and eibach springs. I bought used front koni's with a full set of used -35mm eibach springs leaving the back shocks standard, and can honestly say it feels so much better overall with speedbumps not as harsh over the standard setup. You can buy brand new front koni's on ebay sometimes on offer for just over £100 each! Bargain! I have set the damping rate on the front at half. Feels perfect :)

Thanks,i would hate to have to go through it all again so it will never be sold as i probably couldn't afford to buy most of the parts for another resto as even from the four years ago i started collecting bits for it the prices have shot up.

It's just one of those things you get after prolonged storage. Proper maintenance prior to storage usually prevents this sort of annoyances. Then again, it's a Nova so something has to act up. :d

Haven't updated this thread in a while,my nova was in storage while my new garage was being built.the first picture was my old timber garage which was falling down so a new one was built and the whole garden levelled at the same time, digging out 220 tons of soil in the process.nice sunny pic is from yesterday and the only thing to report is that I fitted new shocks and some lowering springs.as you can see there is more than enough room for the nova now :d

well today i decided to put it back on the alloys for the first time in three years, been running the gte trims since then..renewed the insurance in April and it hasn't turned a wheel since.gave it a wash and did a few little jobs on it,if i can get an mot on it this week then I'll probably use it.if not it will be put away again..the joys of having two young children under three! No time to myself anymore but thought the old heap came up not too bad after a quick wash.

Photobucket is shite now :wtf:
They want US$399 for hotlinking. Hosting images is still free... As if that's any use if you want to use links. Bastards.

Use imgur, copy the http link you get, then use the little picture icon with the tree in and paste the link into that, it works which helps lol

Cheers,I'll probably need to get a few bits touched up on it.years of being in my old damp wooden garage have taken their toll...finally got a decent brick one now to keep it good.

Was a nice day today so it got road taxed..did around 40 miles in it earlier, last year between mot’s I managed 70 miles so I’ve done over half my annual mileage in a day lol determined it’s going to get used this year!!

Managed at long last to get some proper pre 2001 plates made, may not bother a lot of people but it bugged me for years.looks proper now.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/48061afbe64948e675754a5db95b46de.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180522/08e7d03ec0092160de5dc3692f3cba8a.jpg

Tried a speedline on it last week..quite like them but they were hitting the calipers which was a pain in the arse.might think about them again further down the line but at least i got a loan of one to try instead of buying a set then discovering they don’t fit properly.

Keep the 3 spokes - speedlines on a standard GTE don't work imo!

Where did you get the plates done ? Could do with a set for my Gte .

I probably will,I usually swap between the alloys and the steels with the gte trims.

But needs some silver three spokes alloys
As already been said

Or the wheel trims would probably be better - I think they make the car look a bit more 'aggressive' than the 3 spokes - maybe not aggressive, but less wimpy?!
