View Full Version : craig's nova gte
I never got a chance to collect the handbrake cables or Corsa GSi front brakes over the weekend, was gonna throw them on and see how it fared on an MOT.
Where did you get the shell restored ? I know a good well priced painter, so really just looking for some good fab work/panel replacement working.
It was done by a mate of mine but he's snowed under with work at the moment,i'll be speaking to him this week and i'll mention it mate, see what he says
Yeah that'd be ideal.
It's had a lot of repair work, which if i'm honest isn't great, id' rather it was cut out and done properly.
Wont be looking to get it done til after August, going to run it until then whilst gathering panels etc.
That sounds like a plan mate, that way you'll get the summer out of it
Thats my thinking, at least if i drive it before i pull it apart i'll know what i'm missing out on, gives me time to get a few bits tidied up on my Type R while i'm running the Nova.
That looks gorgeous! Well done mate!

Think ive got a wiring problem kev, might have sussed it though.running a wire directly from the coil to the battery seems to have fixed it,tried that today and it started going on all four cylinders again.so going to wire it correctly with a relay will be easier than trying to find a broken wire somewhere i reckon

Moved the little rod on the linkage,i now have all gears apart from 5th.something has obviously came loose, fecking thing can even break when not getting used lollol

Just read from page 1 mate, what a transformation, respect for doing that.. also love how you've kept it all original. Hopefully i'll see it in the flesh sometime as I'm from Irvine. ;)

Just started on it tonight.
Had a lot of work to do to get my garage clear enough for the car to fit and then had to get some concrete work done to repair the floor etc.
Just going to get a can of cidre out the fridge then update my log.

Sounds like a plan,i'll be watching for the update.
Took the nova out of its hibernation to move something in the garage,it sat outside for two hours & got covered in bird sh!t.so i thought i would give it a polish after washing it so took a couple of pics before putting it back in,there are still some issues needing fixed so march/apr time i will be fitting some better boot vinyl, ashley exhaust -if my classic policy allows it & toying with the idea of taking the alloys off & putting steel wheels & gte wheel trims on it.thoughts & opinions welcome

Holy ****! I'm just gathering panels up for the minute.
Really need a better paying job so i can rattle on with it, saving some money now i have got rid of the Type R.
I had around 18 months of gathering parts, panels etc.
At least most of your car was there to start with,i was missing most of mine lol that should give most people hope with a project when you see the shed i started with.

Getting it to Scottish Nova meefs next year mate?
+Rep Raf24, just spent an hour reading the 30 page rebuild congrats on a great and ultra fast build , hope to see itat a Scottish show next year!
I really should take a leaf out of your book mate, mine is still sitting in the same spot with nothing done to it yet lol
Yes i am definitely going to a few shows this year,i only did a couple of locals this year(kames at muirkirk & dean park in kilmarnock) which i will be at again but may go to others.
Thanks for the comments david & pauly.
Bazil-are you talking about your red gte or your black gsi? lol

The black ones on the road its his silver one your thinking of lol
I knew the black one was a recent purchase, but i thought he also had a red gte & silver gsi as well before he got the black one? Or am i getting confused lol
Aye hes got the red GTE in need of rebuild, the silver GSI in need of rebuild and the black GSI which is in stunning condition.
Be nice to see all of them back on the road, probably be a few quid for that to happen i'd imagine though.
To be fair he has most of the panels to rebuild them.
Yeah I've got 2 scrap shells, one minted full car and a frightening load of bits lol
I was refering to my GTE though as it would look the carbon copy of your lol. As Sport says I'm almost at the end of the collecting parts bit then the fun starts.
I hope you make it to some of our wee drives.
Earlier this year we had a few, Oban was fun, Dunnoon was a good day out too.
lucky boy having three to play with ;) im going to make a point of meeting everybody i can and try and show up to a few shows etc.last summer was a washout & had a few teething problems with the nova but hopefully make up for it next year.
Cool, your more than welcome to pop over to mine if I'm working on one of my scrapers lol that's how most of the meets happen round my way lol

Went out to the garage as i'm taxing it next week & want to start using it again so was checking it over & was greeted by this bit of trim hanging off the door, not a huge problem as i have spare surrounds anyway but is there any way of securing it better than those little metal clips? Sorry for the crap pics i couldnt move it as the battery was flat

Took a pic after it broke down & i was bored waiting for the AA,was shiitting myself at all the the traffic flying past and decided the nova was not a safe place to be so bravely buggered off into a field lol

what caused it to brake down dude
Turns out it had melted the fuel pump fuse mate,AA guy said it was far too small an ampage (7.5a) which does seem a bit light to me for an electric pump,i've got a 10 amp fuse in it at the minute but if anybody could tell me what the correct size is that would be great,i also noticed i now have no battery, handbrake etc warning lights so if anybody can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated :thumb:
These are the two problems i had yesterday.
http://i932.photobucket.com/albums/ad166/bigraf24/4EDA1E46-AF9C-4F3E-84CD-63D98E1AF4A1-5804-000002E0FBB7D9B6.jpg

The spade connector on the live feed was dodgy as well, just wondered if there was a better way to put it onto the pump? Its taped up for now but dont want to half arrse it would rather do it right, any suggestions?
You checked the other fuses? As one does the instruments iirc
Is the plastic track on the back of the clocks OK? As that can cause problems if it's cracked

Just reread the whole thread. Such a great build from something most people may have scrapped! Did you use genuine wings or pattern ones? The fit between the bumper edge and wing looks perfect. I can't get mine mine anywhere near that good a fit!
Looking forward to perving round this at the weekend mate :)

Fitted the new headlamps tonight, they are a lot better fit than the others but theres still a bit of a gap between the bottom lip of the bonnet and the top of the headlamp, maybe i'm just being too picky? lol i was also going to put a pinstripe in the bumper but cant decide on silver or black? They suit it even more as the vauxhall lettering on the mats are red, same as the car...as said before they are used & have some wear but wasnt turning my nose up at them for feck all ;)
Ditched the idea of having a hidden cd player as it was a pain in the ass having to open the glovebox everytime i wanted to do anything,so wired up my radio cassette & started buying tapes off ebay lol i only have two at the moment but need to fill up my tape holder in the centre console(proper retroness) so i'm racking my brains trying to think what other albums i can buy,i actually quite like it as i'm reliving my yoof lol

First thing I done with my sr was launch the standard head unit lol
There's something nice about the clunk you get when you put a tape in it & the hissing of the crap sound through the speakers lol
New ashley backbox fitted & decided to give the boot vinyl a bash..it took me an hour to get all the old double sided tape off as well so the surface was totally flat, after much swearing and wrestling with the vinyl & then using a pin to get all the air bubbles out i got pissed off & abandoned it...so i thought fcuk it i'm going to the pub to get wasted,i will finish it another day lol

How did you manage to get your backbox to fit like that as mine sits almost straight out? Are you able to get an under shot?
mine sits like his aswell buddy. if you turn it upside down it should put it to a slant. thats what i done to mine anyways. if you want ill grab a pic? also is your back box mk1 or mk2? think if you have a mk1 back box it'll just sit straight rather than slanted. few of my mates with gte's and sr's buy mk2 back boxes and they have all tilted them to give that slant look. hope that helps
How did you manage to get your backbox to fit like that as mine sits almost straight out? Are you able to get an under shot?
Do you think it looks ok? I wasn't sure about it at first but it's a brand new ashley backbox for a mk1 & i bought it direct from them as my work has an account with ashley..what are other peoples thoughts on it? I like the way it sits
All built back up now,not too bad for my first attempt at fitting vinyl apart from one small crease i'm quite chuffed :)

Just want to say to all who hv followed the full resto of Craig's GTE, I owned this car in 97 and what a fantastic job he's done on rebuilding it, it was my pride and joy back then and to stumble on this car again 3 days ago and see it probably better than it's ever looked... Full respect to Craig.. Brought a huge smile to my face... And many others I suspect

what seat covers have you got mate ?
Town & country waterproof ones mate, the seats are in really good condition & don't have any bolster wear which is unusual so i want to keep them good.

I went on a 300 mile round trip to buy my interior so i want to keep it good lol
My replacement rocker cover all painted as i was never happy with the old one as it was a bit scabby, not much of an update but i'll get it fitted when the weather is a bit warmer, the garage is no fun when its cold :)

Yeah stick them on and see what they look like. I quite like them.
I think the trims look better on a GTE than the 3 spokes do, go for it. :thumb:
Its a hard call ladd. Its up to personal preference. The trims look good but alloys look better!
Well i've done it,they are on now...i'll upload pics when i get a chance,i actually quite like them :)
