Looks good pal:)

Sod waiting, get it abused!

Is it the pic, or has the paint reacted at the top of the bay?

Is it going on a full stainless exhaust??

Ta fella :thumb:
nah the waiting will make it better imo, don't want to ruin it in winter lol

shhhhhhhh! don't mention the paint on the firewall! lol i had a slight sanding disc related incident lol, as a result of dan telling me to get on with it lol could have done with a skim of dolphin glaze before painting but i had none so meh

not sure on the exhaust yet, it will probably just get chucked together with the standard manifold and exhaust just to drive it to its winter home, then it's getting a full stainless over winter, and if funds permit, a stainless manifold next year too

looking good mr lewis :thumb:

thank you mate :thumb:

looking really good mate :) have your plans changed at all for the look of the outside of the car ?:D

Lewis.
19-09-11, 09:24 PM
cheers mate :)

yeah they've changed a little, I think it's going to be a GTE, as all it needs is a colour coded spoiler and GTE badging lol
also going to change the wheels, not sure what yet, but I'm thinking either comp MO's, RFX revolutions, or borbet A's in a dark bronze colour, like this \/ (the colour, not wheels lol)
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_AzAprrUueRU/TPTRsB-hYHI/AAAAAAAABcA/w9Swi_QsxEY/s1600/ce2816%2B5114%2Bre001%2Bbotak.JPG

Lewis.

thanks fella, MO's are my personal favourite, but they don't like me lol i've bought 3 sets now, and none of them fitted (for various reasons lol)

20-09-11, 01:01 PM
Looking good pal won't be long and it will be done :) and glad you did what I did with the loom makes the bay look so much neater! Can't wait to see it done! Oh and for the record borbet wheels in the bronze would look awesome!

Lewis.
20-09-11, 06:33 PM
Cheers mate :) so am I, looks much neater than going round the turret, and you can barely see it with the SFI box on :D

ah glad you think so, if I can fiind some A's in the right size for sensible money I'd consider them, they play second fiddle to MO's though lol

Jeff93
20-09-11, 07:31 PM
I have spent the whole day reading through this thread.. All I can say is fair play to you and I wasn't the only mad one to save and absolutely stunk Nova (only difference mine is still 1L and your is soon redtop haha) Fair play man and its a credit to you..

Lewis.
20-09-11, 08:13 PM
Thank you very much mate :) I'm glad you like what I'm doing with it. Have you got any pictures of the work done to yours?

Jeff93
20-09-11, 09:16 PM
Ya I have a fair amount of pics.. Well when you say I like what your doing I don't really like the xe, I was loving the fact you were keeping the SR in and fairly standard but I can understand why your XEing it

Lewis.
20-09-11, 10:34 PM
I know what you mean about the XE, and i'd rather have kept it standard, but you cant get a reliable 150bhp from a 1.4 for a couple hundred quid, so XE it is i'm afraid

Lewis.
20-10-11, 07:04 PM
I've forgotten about this again lol
Not done much, It's just been cock up after cock up with getting parts sorted, but finally got there lol I'll not bore you with all the details, i'll just put pictures up and point at them

some poly bushes

Prettied my hubs up a bit. I'm very pleased with how they've come up
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/131020111611.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/141020111614.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/141020111615.jpg

also drilled the bolts for rear gearbox mount so they can be wired in. Won't have any nasty surprises with them coming loose now
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/131020111613.jpg

put a few more things in the bay, master cylinder (GTE flavoured one :) ) header tanks, coil etc
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/151020111618.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/151020111619.jpg

also put my shafts together, then realised 'd been supplied the wrong inners. should have been MK2 cavalier 16SV ones to go with my GTE shafts, but they had given me normal GTE inners ffs. so i've now got the right ones sorted today. pictures when they are assembled.

So fingers crossed, with some nice weather on saturday, it might be back on it's wheels at the weekend :d

Hey Scott,
yeah they are from rally design, part numbers for these yellow ones are:
2x PB031A - Polybush £6.08
2x PB032A - Polybush £11.94
came to £24.02 including VAT and P&P

Do you know what the poly race (red) ones are like on the road? harsh and uncomfortable I'm guessing?

Ah that's a shame, but if I had the choice again, I'd stick with the standard injection anyway, the carbs were just so much hassle.

looking forwards to seeing these vids :)

It's a John Ashley Exhausts 4-2-1 race manifold, and it's huge! its got 1 3/4" primaries and 2 1/2" tail :) so it should help the XE breath a bit better. looks miles better than the standard one too so it's all win :d

Lewis.

23-10-11, 05:31 PM
I've done some more!

fitted my drilled bolts and lock wired them
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/231020111642.jpg

put the other drive shaft together
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/231020111643.jpg

Had some trouble getting the shafts in the diff, then discovered the presence of lots of swarf from when the CVJ's were machined in the circlip groove. I cleaned this out, and they now slide in a treat. I'm a mechanical wizard, my place at Hogwarts is guaranteed lol

Then I got the suspension all built up :d

lol fair enough then, these poly bushes are only £5 dearer than standard pattern bushes, so if they need changing it's a no brainer really :)
the manifold only has 1 small scuff on the bottom of the collector, so hopefully shouldn't ground too much, my nova's not that low either

Looks good mate, I hope that you also think to upgrade the suspension.:d

thanks, yeah it's having some coilovers when funds allow, just putting it back together with these for now so i can move it to my new house in a few weeks :)

does anyone want to give me a radiator, a 2 1/2" exhaust system, and some other bits in exchange for some kind words? as thats all I have at the moment lol I've just got a house with the missus and I've now run out of money :( its currently sat on my dads driveway, feeling sorry for its self.

23-11-11, 07:24 PM
Cant you trailer it?

Lewis.
26-11-11, 10:14 AM
yeah a mate at work is trailering it for me anyway, as it's not taxed or insured, and i don't want the straight bar to scratch the towing eye lol problem is there's no easy way of getting it in my garage without it running, and I have no driveway so have nowhere to easilly do and major work, which sucks. so it needs to be running quite soon

Lewis.
12-12-11, 07:18 PM
ZOMG I've actually worked on the Nova at the weekend lol The plan was to get it ready to be trailered home next week, so I can tuck it up for winter, and finish it in the spring.

looking a bit sad
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/101220111756.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/101220111763.jpg

cracked on none the less. got the new radiator in at last
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/101220111764.jpg

then put some hub nuts on. I had lost the originals, so spent £20 on some new nuts and washers from vauxhall, and then immediately found the originals lol

anyway, then stuck the wheels on, and it was time for it to meet the floor again, for the first time in many months.

My dad's ingenious lifting method, came down straight and even, no problems
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/101220111766.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/101220111767.jpg

And it's down. Very pleased, I was half expecting it to somehow end up on its roof and on fire :wtf:

I had a Vfr 400 was scariest thing I ever drove got ride of it with in 2 days. then got ktm 450 supermoto road legal then on to my fireblade much better bike loved it so fast not at all bad for my age I don't think.

Balley
08-01-12, 11:49 PM
Sorry pal but how can a VFR400 be scarier than a Blade, I had a vfr400 and have ridden both 900rr and a 1000r blade.. I can certainly tell you which one scared me the most lmao.

svlet
09-01-12, 06:01 AM
They handle like s**t skinny little tyres and wheels then when v tec comes in not good back wheel prone to looking up when changing down. Blade was much more composed actully felt like it wanted to corner felt alot safer on my blade even tho it had just under 3 times the power .

Lewis.
09-01-12, 08:57 PM
I know what you're saying about the VFR and it's 'interesting' handling characteristics, but it's not got that bad a reputation, and you can't really get used to a bike in just 2 days. I agree with Dan, a fireblade is certainly a far scarier prospect.

Balley
09-01-12, 09:19 PM
I agree with the back wheel locking up, but as for handling they are amazing I my eyes.. as long as you have a good set of forks that is lol :P

I wire wheeled and laqured all the suspension bolts when I put the Nova back together, but after just a couple months of being damp, they are orange again :( I wanted them BZP gold in the first place, so had a little ride out to see Colin (NovaRally) this evening, and got a complete set of suspension/engine bolts, & some matching wheel bolts for good measure seeing as mine are odd lol

OCD has kicked in
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/160120121830.jpg

Also picked up some braided goodrich hoses, and a plastic cover for the fuel tank access hole, as my carb shell is lacking a hole lol
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/160120121833.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/160120121832.jpg

Now just don't go expecting me to do anything with them lol

Lewis.
11-02-12, 05:30 PM
An update, I sh*t you not!

Right, well as summer is on it's way is no where to be seen, I've decided to try and remember where I left the Nova.

Dug all the sh*t out the way and blocked the path up
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121869.jpg

Then Rob helped me turn it round
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121868.jpg

Bumper off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121873.jpg

And up on stands
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121874.jpg

Exhaust off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121877.jpg

And beam off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121875.jpg

And finally, the fuel tank off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121879.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121880.jpg

Surprisingly, there's no rust over the tank. Nice that :)
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121881.jpg

Then it got dark and even colder (it had been a nice toasty -2 all afternoon lol) so packed up.

still need to powdercoat and polybush the beam, and paint the new tank and fit that. need to waxoyl the whole underside too, and re brake pipe it.

Oh, and I also got £160 worth of goodies for the brakes too :d
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/110220121865.jpg

Is it worth plating old bolts, can you not just buy new seeing as they're all just high tensile M10/M12 etc?

Nice work though, doesn't feel that cold when you crack on does it :)

I think so, As I'd like to keep the original bolts, as most are flanged, have a tapered point etc, and there are a lot of little brackets I want doing as well. Also I want them gold BZP, and most off the shelf are silver.

Thanks though, And I know, I actually got a sweat on at one point lol

Nice work Lewis, definately wont see me working on my nova in that temperature anymore lol

Thanks Connor, I don't usually, but have been having urges to work on spanish rot boxes again lol

05-03-12, 06:48 PM
Now then, this is going to be a busy week. I've got all of this week of work, so the plan is to have the nova FINISHED by end of play on sunday

first off, carb shell.
Problem
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121902.jpg

No problem
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121904.jpg

then wire wheeled the back end of the underside back to bare metal, zinc primered, and then cracked out the dreaded woxoyl
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121905.jpg
looks great, but my whole garage floor now resembles a black paddling pool lol

While that dried, I painted the tank and the beam
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121906.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121910.jpg

then while everything dried I went to Lincoln for some bits
needed an exhaust flexi, but they wanted £60 for the b*stard thing! so bought a mondeo front pipe for £30 instead. makes sense doesn't it
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121907.jpg

also got a new filter spigot to delete the oil cooler
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121908.jpg

And picked up all my freshly BZP'd bolts from Nigel (Balley's Dad) really pleased with them :)
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/050320121909.jpg

Postman was to f*cking idle to knock on the door to deliver my rad fans, so they will be here tomorrow :)

today was a waste of time, went to the scrappy for a few bits, got htere and realised I had no tools at all with me (girlfriends car ) I was then dragged round f*cking pets at home and finally got home at halp past 2 :wall: exactly what I needed

so as I have no bench, vise or tools at home, chucked some stuff in the car and went to work

fitted the high pressure pump to the SPI pump carrier. still scares me having bare wires in a tank full of petrol vapour lol
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/060320121914.jpg

stripped the rear drums down and wire wheeled, and straightened the back plates.
before and after:
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/060320121913.jpg

also fitted the bearings to the new drums
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/060320121915.jpg

back plates are painted now, then it got dark :(

postie brought me a present too. Pair of 8" fans should keep it cool
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/060320121916.jpg

another day of fail

after much swearing, I got the fuel tank fitted no less than 6 seperate times, getting all the pipes to fit lol scratched the tank to fukk though :(
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/070320121917.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/070320121918.jpg

It's now got a feed from the tank, just needs the return connecting up

Then the gf fitted the poly bushes to the rear beam
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/070320121919.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/070320121920.jpg

and gave the back plates another coat
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/070320121923.jpg

that is all. FML

Lewis.
08-03-12, 05:50 PM
Did quite a bit better today then yesterday,

started off cleaning up the new coilovers, as for some reason they had been waxoyled :tard:
come up real nice, didn't take long as the GF did two
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121924.jpg

then chucked the rear beam back on and fitted the springs and shocks
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121926.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121925.jpg

then fitted the goodrich hoses
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121927.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121929.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121928.jpg

painted the brand new drums
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121936.jpg

fitted the new shoes wheel cylinders, and handbrake cables
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121935.jpg

then made some brake pipes up for the rear beam
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121934.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/080320121933.jpg

that's all for today, tomorrow it's going back on it's wheels, and being taken outside so I can get the front and back up on stands to waxoyl the rest of the floor, and fit the brake pipes and fuel lines. :d

I know, I felt all dirty and ashamed when I fitted them lol originals are all bent so there are some new ones on the way, these are just to move things along.
Thanks, It really is a tedious job, especially when you realise you forgot to paint something before, then have to wait 5 hours to fit it lol

And dragged her outside

got it up in the air and wheels off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/090320121942.jpg

clipped all the fuel pipes up, then it was on with the dreaded goo again :(

fitted the coilovers while it was drying
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/090320121948.jpg

Done quite a lot to it today, not photographed an awful lot, but it's getting there!

first things first, I made up the last brake pipes
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121952.jpg

and fitted them. (I already made and fitted the ones from the M/C to the bottom of the bulkhead before the engine went in)
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121954.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121953.jpg

Then fitted the 8v oil filter spigot to delete the oil cooler, seeing as it serves almost no purpose
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121956.jpg

I then went to fit the 2 litre front brakes that I cleaned and painted yesterday... only to find they are in fact 288mm V6 calipers :wall: so if anyone wants them they are for sale lol

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121955.jpg

so a quick phone call and sorted out some other calipers from a mate who lives round the corner. painted them up and fitted.
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/100320121957.jpg

Also got the handbrake cables all connected, exhaust back box painted, new manifold studs in the head, fuel pipes connected to the rail, and various other little bits.

and now I've just got home from a 200 mile trip to collect my new front seats.
the bolster wear is being repaired next week, then they just need attatching to my spare subframes. they are very comfy :d
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121959.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121960.jpg

tomorrow I should hopefully get the exhaust on, then I can put it back on the floor, fit the bumpers and concentrate on wiring it up and getting it running :) yay

Got on well today, it's so close now!

first off, I fitted the new exhaust manifold studs (Ignore Robert's little accident lol)
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121961.jpg

Cut the flexi out of the Mondeo front pipe
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121964.jpg

a bit of mocking up. cable ties and masking tape FTW
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121965.jpg

welded the flexi to the manifold, then tacked the front pipe to it
just touches the floor, so that needed rotating down a bit
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121966.jpg

put the back box on and fitted the bumper to see how it sat.
Turns out it's a MK2 back box
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121967.jpg

Found that if I rotated the box, it would actually fit well. So cut the bracket off, re welded it where the pink spot is
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121971.jpg

re welded the front pipe, now clears the floor and gear linkage perfectly. So fitted the modded backbox and I think It looks spot on. Because it's been rotated to fit the bumper, it's now super wonkey, points to the side, and up too, I really like it!
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121972.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121973.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121970.jpg

And for the first time, I now have the manifold and radiator in together! I can't believe how tight it is, must have taken 20 minutes of wriggling and bracket 'modifying' lol

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121975.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/110320121976.jpg

Got it back on it's wheels and in the garage for tonight, as I'm back at work tomorrow  wheels won't clear the new calipers now, so will require some attention from the grinder.

hopefully get a bit more done in the evenings this week. Thanks for looking :thumb:

I know, Rob discovered that they wouldn't fit just as we were trying to get it back inside before it got totally dark lol I've got some 3mm wheel spacers that would solve it but the PCD only goes down to 108mm :tard:

back box looks spot on dude :thumb:

were did you get the exhaust studs from? they still avail from vauxh??

thanks

Cheers mate, I got them from my local fastener suppliers http://www.lincsfasteners.co.uk/ we deal with them a lot at work so they were only a fiver including the all metal locking nuts. can get you a set if you need them?

Exhaust tip looks the nuts mate

Ta Connor, I'm hoping it sounds just as good lol

Looking good mate, its really coming together now !

You need to force it on, it wont fit like that as its touching/chafing the scuttle panel you geek, push it on to the rad and it will look like mine:p

Lewis.
12-03-12, 06:41 PM
I did push it on at both ends, but it just cripples the pipe and folds in half. hold on I'll get a picture.

If its too far forward you can cut them shorter fairly easily. Did that on a few of my Roose breather pipes for a better fit.

Spudly

I didnt cut any of my roose hoses, apart from the two between the T piece and the rad, and the other side to the header tank but theyre deliberately too long for that purpose!

Oh and you can get spacers cheap enough, so I would just get some of them rather than grind the callipers!

right this is how it fits
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/120320121981.jpg

but looking at the other picture, it looks as though the rad is too far back.

what sort of angle should the rad lean back at? mine looks quite slanty to me, its right forward in the brackets at that. (gas bottle is the verticle, obviously) can someone compare please?

I mean the oil pressure, and alternator shizzle, not in the guides :(

dude have you tried twisting about to see if will fit and take the kink out? if not just chop an inch of at the stat end.

Yeah treid it every way. I think it's had a replacement upper panel in the past, as it has holes to fit a MK2 grille. it may be that the upper rad mounts are too far back or something.
think I may end up trimming it

scott.parker
12-03-12, 07:55 PM
Think the rads in the right place tbf, as if it was any closer toward the front you would puncher it with the bonnet pin lol

This is another reason for cutting normal slam out and placing a L shape in and bonnet pins etc so you get more rad clearance from your manifold etc.

Yeah it was a right squeeze getting the rad and manifold in together, had it at alsorts of odd angles lol I agree it would make life easy, but I don't really want to go down the bonnet pin route as I'm intending to have it look like a standard GTE from outside. Might consider some colour coded aerocatches or something

I've used a hack saw before and it was okay, but it's best to use 24tpi not 12tpi as I found out the hard way lol

My favoured method is to lightly clamp a jubilee clip round it, then follow the edge of the clip with a new razor blade. And if that fails, follow your wrists with the same razor blade lol

got feck all done at the weekend, spent all of saturday cnuting around fetching a corsa for the missus, and sunday was a miserable rainy day.

got the top hose trimmed to fit. had to cut loads out!
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/180320121989.jpg

fits well now though
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/180320121992.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/180320121990.jpg

swapped the two 8" fans I bought for Balley's 12" fan, as they were just to thick to fit behind the slam panel brace. got it wired in, along with a few other things in the bay.
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/180320121996.jpg

Then wired up the fuel pump, and the wires in the footwell, tippedsome fuel in and turned the key. It cranks, but the fuel pump relays knackered, which is odd as it ran fine before I took the engine out. Dan bridged the pins to make it run, and we tried again, but the battery went flat :(

now I'm just in need of a few coolant pipes and a relay, and need to get the ECU mounted and the dash refitted in time for it's test on Friday! and I have no tme off before then :/ oh the joys

Started late today as I was at work in the morning.

Put the front calipers back on and started trying to make the wheels fit over them. oh joy  ground the edge down a bit, but it was clear that they would still never fit. I'm adamant that I want to keep the 3 spokes as I love them, so more drastic steps are required.
a pair of 10mm wheel spacers and some more caliper shaving sorted it out, just need some longer wheel bolts now. effectively makes the wheels ET37.5 but they still clear the wings okay which is a bonus

Also got all the plumbing finished, and vacuum blead the system
put some oil in the gearbox

Then dyed my carpets black (read painted lol) and Balley arrived to help fit my interior

Forgot to take anymore pictures, but when I went to drive it back into the garage, the drivers side inner CV joint stripped all it's splines again! :wall:  So given up on them, and I'm collecting a set of big block shafts and hubs tomorrow instead lol So I've still never driven it

Where the hell is your ecu lol

Mines between the ignition cowling and the fuse box, looped a tie wrap through one hole and the steering column support and it sits fine :d

Wtf gives with your cv's though, i took mine down the lane today and nailed it, feels really fast:d (not trying to rub it in mind) :p

Lewis.
25-03-12, 10:34 PM
jammed between the bulkhead and the loom, just behind and above the fuse box. I routed the loom down the passenger side of the battery, as I don't like seeing it draped round the turret, so was limited on choice lol

And I have no idea, needless to say I was very p*ssed when it went again, especially as there is oil in the box now  What shafts are you using? And oh yes, thanks for that lol  lol

Spudly
25-03-12, 10:51 PM
Ive got the smallblock hubs and the tapered conversion shafts, they came from the nova built by the_general_chancer, abused at york by him and Andy, and sold onto 24sevenslacker on here, Tommy now runs big block hubs and such and sold the shafts to me!

Is your ecu touching wires as with vibrations can/will chafe through and short out wiring/cause fires, you need to move it from the loom, thats one thing that took me ages this aft to mount it somewhere it wouldnt rub through the loom!

Lewis.
26-03-12, 10:02 PM
oh right, well i've took the plunge and bought some big block shafts and hubs to save any more problems.

ECU will be fine, It's mounted tightly to the column support bracket, and the engine loom passes a few inches over the top, and the car loom runs an inch from the front. No dash fires for me lol

Lewis.
26-03-12, 10:52 PM
following the second mishap with the shafts, I went to collect a set of proper big block shafts and hubs from Colin today. There should be a picture just here \/ but I didn't take one lol

So got home, pushed () the Nova outside again. stuck the pressure bleader on it and got the brakes all blead up nicely. so much easier than messing about with 2 people
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/260320122022.jpg

then adjusted the rear brakes again. got a nice pedal now :) shiney new
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/260320122021.jpg

Then stuck it back inside and removed the offending shaft again
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/260320122025.jpg
removed the CV boot and it's definitely the splines gone again. I guess the shaft splines must be a bit crap too, which I canlt understand because they put up with plenty of punishment on Balleys TD

So She's looking sorry for herself again :(

What a pisser, so any idea why it keep chomping CV's?

Lewis.
29-03-12, 06:25 PM
I can only assume I've been supplied the wrong joints, as the shafts show no signs of damage. They are definitely 22 splines, and seem to fit snugly, but must be for a slightly larger shaft - not that I'm aware of the existence of such shafts lol

Proper update coming tonight :thumb:

Thanks mate, I never used to like them either, but they grew on me and now I think they make the car, really in keeping with the 80's ness of it all. I've got some proper nice paint for them too... colour is still classified though lol

Took the Nova to work this morning to MOT it, was all rather nerve wracking lol One of the coilovers is foobared so had to swap them over to the spare Gmax springs and shocks I had in stock, but long story short, It's now passed! :d :d :d :d :d

Sent the misses off the DVLA local office to register the engine and tax it, and after handing over 121 of my english pounds, it's now got 6 months rent in the window too :thumb:

So we've been on it's maiden voyage tonight, and all I can say is wow! Now I know XE Nova's aren't the fastest thing ever created, but it's certainly fooking rapid, spins in 1st, 2nd and 3rd lol

Just need to set the gear linkage up properly tomorrow, as i've currently got push down 1st and 2nd, and 5th is hiding somewhere lol and a few other little bits too

I even washed it! but no pictures because I fail at life lol

got some door cappings to go on too. I'm pleased with how the vinyl follows the original lines of the door card, gives it a bit more detail. Just need some black winders now.

That's why I got a batch made, the ones with the rounded E are for the Astra GTE. The signwriter has the files saved, so I can easilly get more made if there's the demand for them. going to keep my set though, just incase lol

We need to meet up sometime lew now both our cars are on the road :thumb:

another small update.

done about 300 miles in it now, and discovered a couple of teething problems.

biggest problem is the lack of heater. due to the retarded unique way I'd plumbed the engine in, I'd actually bypassed the heater matrix lol Couldn;t make anything else to work, so just rang up roose and ordered the 3 hoses I needed... now £67 lighter  lol

original hoses

All bled up and heater is working. just need a fan now lol
