View Full Version : Flared Rear Arches

I'm looking for inspiration for getting the rear arches of a 3 door hatchback wider.
The normal wide arch 'rallycross' style of fibreglass is going to be too wide, and I don't really want to lose the look of the standard Nova rear arch.
So, any suggestions/photos from anyone please?
I do have a Nova with some 'narrow' wide arches, but they got destroyed when trying to take them off, and I don't know who made them.
Colin just literally pulling on them can change them quite considerably, not sure if it's noticable here, but:

Certainly on the front you can see it's a more curved shape, coming out more in the centre of the arch? It was noticable on the rear if you're looking for it stood next to the car, and gained a few mm. I actually miss the slightly fatter shape of those arches, it took me a while to realise what it was that looked so different about my TD, but looking at 2 novas side by side you'd see it!

colin, if you cut the wing along the middle of the flare & then vertically, you could move the wing out & then weld some metal back in... hows it going to affect the rules though??
any good panel beater/fabricator shoud be able to make your wings slightly wider so thay keep the same style but wider.
it might not make much sence il be back in a min with pics of somthing similar.

That looks like the normal 'rallycross' kit I think?
this is what i was on about in these wings/arches theres extra bits of metal to make the cossie wheels fit.
its not that hard todo if you know someone in that area of work.

I did think that tbh, the angles are slightly deceiving.
Liking that fiesta though.

Thanks, I have gone through the last 20 or so pages of Iain's build thread, I'll have to go back further to find out about how he did the arches!
A bit crude but it worked lol Here's how I did it: http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1294827&postcount=513

It's a Datsun 240Z, and they are wonderful cars. A great friend of mine owns a full race one (2.8 straight six on triple Webers), and I was lucky enough to get to drive it at a few sprint events a few years back...Wiscombe, Boscombe Down and Castle Combe.
I must dig out some photos!
from octagonal paul. would only look good on a saloon IMO

Apparently Rick Draper had some widened arches on an old Nova of his (circa 2005).
Anyone got any photos of that?
Not sure if it was front and rear, or just fronts, but I'm still curious. Thanks.

Did there not used to be a company on Ebay that made fibreglass rear arches but were only 30-40mm wider than standard????
Looked very like the nova below:

That is exactly what I need.
Who knows anything about them?
Tom Reid has just fitted a set not sure if they are filled yet so he might be able to get some moulds other than that i am sure there was a company selling them on ebay a while ago

Suits me fine, I can just cut away the metal underneath them (if I can find a set).

It's shocking isn't it?
I nearly bought a set years ago. I don't think they're manufactured anymore.
Why not modify originals? Or is it a weight issue?

Certainly weight, partly time but mostly laziness. I'd sooner buy a set than try and find someone with the right skills to modify standard ones.
lol lol
The ones mentioned were fibreglass, however, were only the flared part of the arch. And had to be grafted into stanard archs. So i wouldnt think it was ideal anyway.
would it not be better to cut yours on the flare gently pull them out further( maybe use a jack an block of wood) then once they are were you want them weld in extra piece of metal
if its possible to weld it from the inside there wont be much work involved
i doubt there would be much of a difference between metal shhet an fibreglass / filler unless you fitted a whole rear quarter panel

here are some arches i did on my old "modified nova" I cut the old ones out and used metal to create these which swallowed the 17's. I know the kit looks ridulous

That's a really good idea actually, they do seem quite "square" on the actual arch shape though (probably not as much as a concern on a track/competition car)
