I feel your pain, this happened when I removed the tiles from my bathroom lol Bloody old houses!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/IMAGE_137.jpg
So dry lined then had only my second attempt at tiling(First was an 18 foot long kitchen!!!) and stupidly decided to do the whole bathroom :wtf:
Large tiles = quicker job! Does it feck as like, what a bastid of a job getting them all flat and even. Got there in the end though:)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/IMAGE_152.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/NovaSport/IMAGE_149.jpg
Good luck with the tiling. Just a little tip, buy the best quality tiles you can afford and don't leave any gaps in the adhesive under the tiles(I had one floor tile with a small gap under the corner and the bastid cracked), it will be worth it.

The tiles were really high quality but the were a pig to cut. The finish was so hard/high gloss I had to hand cut them all as the electric cutter just splintered them.

Hi everyone after a good week or so off i got back on it tonight
Heres were i left off - front cross member basically finished minus the holes needed for the tie rod drop links.
That means the cross member needs to be attached to the rest of the car some how so here goes
Cross member in place to jog the memory and engage the brain cell
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige717.jpg
The areas that require plating and boxing in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige718.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige719.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige720.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige721.jpg
The first plate i made previously now needing finalising to fit
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige722.jpg
Rough scribble of some ideas
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige723.jpg
I'm wanting to keep these holes open so i can remove the roll over frame supports more easily once the front panel goes back on, i know iit wont look as smooth and pretty but chin chin.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige724.jpg
Again more rough scrawl
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige725.jpg
First hole cut
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige726.jpg
Second on its way - two hole saw cuts then joined with the grinder
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige727.jpg
Bam
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige728.jpg
And in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige729.jpg
Tacked it there for the time being - it still needs some alterations
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige730.jpg

Position of the holes for puddle welding marked
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige732.jpg
Then i offered up the new front panel to see what it was going to fit like and how much clearance it had
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige733.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige734.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige735.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige736.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige737.jpg
Happy with the results i continued making some more plates
This time to go on the end here
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige740.jpg
Measurements transferred to a paper template so i could offer it up ans see if it looked right
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige738.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige739.jpg
It did so i cut it out of metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige741.jpg
Then made a slight clearance modification to the end of the new cross member to clear the front panel
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige742.jpg
And tacked the end plate in place
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige743.jpg
Leaving the gap below as the last piece of the puzzle
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige744.jpg
As well as the boxing off of this corner
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige745.jpg
More tomorrow hopefully :thumb:

Hi mate i dont think i will alter the approach much as i was happy with the way the last one came out - saying that you never know until you have done it lol. Just have a go and see were it takes you.

Great little update mate not only are your skills inspiring but the ideas you have aswell.
Count Vaux Alot
03-03-11, 10:11 PM
Heres another little update for ya
I started out template making - the first goes under o/s chassis leg to tie the two plates i've made into the chassis
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige746.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige747.jpg
Then decided that my time would be better spent concentrating on making a start on the other side so some more drawing followed - the plate has to be slightly shorter on this side due to the engine mount.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige748.jpg
To give me this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige749.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige750.jpg
Cut out in metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige751.jpg
Bent
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige752.jpg
And some holes
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige753.jpg
I then changed my mind and decided it looked better cut straight up as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige754.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige755.jpg
Again a plate on to the other side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige756.jpg
Tacked in place for the time being
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige757.jpg
I'm now left needing to fill this space
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige758.jpg
And that will be done a little something like this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige759.jpg
However it will be cut along the bottom to follow the cross member as below
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige760-1.jpg

How do you plan on replicating the original nut in the standard crossmember for the tiebar bracket (visible on last pic)?

Thanks for your comments chaps.
Iain I plant to Knut and bolt through as I have clearance between the crossmember and the front panel.
Will that need an anti-crush tube like they have as standard or will the thickness of metal be adequate? Edit; Think I know the answer!

Hey James,
lots of closed box sections and other bits... have you thought about using cavity wax of some sort to protect all the hidden metal "spaces"? I assume you have given it some thought, just not mentioned it yet.
More great updates btw - keep them coming. Loving this thread to bits! :thumb:

Hi Lewi in all honesty i didnt really learn it any were as such no one has officially taught me anything (no lessons or tutorials) i have however watched others and just taught myself along with asking questions and reading etc. Its just a case of givng it a go really :thumb:

Hi Niek i have thought about it yes - i have primed inside of all of the boxed off sections and will probably add a drain hole on the underside of each of them (which i will use to cavity wax or similar when i get to that stage)

Today's update
I began by tacking the tie bar mounts on to the new cross member so i could remove the support bars i had previously added, giving me more space and better access in the engine bay..

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige869.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige870.jpg
Then i made up some more small plates
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige871.jpg
And tacked them in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige872.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige874.jpg
Welded them up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige873.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige875.jpg
Letting them cool i got on with some more rough sanding of the plated areas

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige878.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige880.jpg
Fed up of grinding welds back for the minute i moved on to seam welding
Gave the area a quick clean off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige881.jpg
Tapped the seams together with a hammer to make it easier to weld

Splatted some weld on - even though i though i had cleaned all the crap out of the seams the welder still wasn't 100% happy as it was spitting and the welds aren't as good as i would have liked.

your weld is much better than mine , my dad always said its got to sound like your frying bacon lol
keep the good work comeing
Just a quick question, do you usualy spray the back of the metal parts before you weld them on?
For example this:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige927.jpg
Would it not get air and maybe water through this hole then rust?

Usually i would yes but as i was doing a lot of welding/cleaning off of this particular piece i decided not to as most of it would be burned off through the heat.
As you pointed out there is good access through the holes so i will cavity wax or similar at a later date. Also primer is porous so doesnt protect against moisture and rust on a long term basis anyway.

I am going 1600xe turbo, apparently when I asked about alternator clearance on the 1600xe some people had trouble where others didn't so I thought I would do it anyway.
My spare 1600's still fitted to my kadett and I cba removing then refitting it to the nova just to see if the alt fouled the chassis.

If you've still got it in bits can you do me a favour and measure a few things?
- Whats the depth of the bellhousing adapter from the torque tube mounting face to the engine mating surface?
- Whats the size of the driveshaft in the tube and how many splines and even better if you've got one lying around can you see if either an XE or LET clutch fits the splines?
- What engine is in that?
Cheers :)

i had a parchment one that eventually rotted away, its mucky bits are in my current one...
it had a snowplough, wraparound spoiler, brown sr interior, 5.5j14 opel (SR) steelies, e16se and when it was clean, looked damned good (in my humble opinion) & attracted no old bill at all.... cos a beige car simply can't go fast...
My first Nova at 17 was a B plate beige 1.2L, back when red 1.2s fetched over a grand. Served me well as a student for 2 years till one of the sparkplugs fell out and I didn't know about helicoiling then. Standard one piece bumper with vaux badged removed, painted the front lip to match the bumper and cut in fog lights. SR seats, brand new wrap around spoiler from Vauxhall lol. Mk2 Cav CDi alloys, cherry bomb backbox. Ruined it by playing on the wet stand at Ynyslas dunes too often :)

Anyone with any gen on these? ive used the search but its unclear if anyone has one fitted (other than lee303 as his threads a mission)

me, but with itb's/mbe.
Find warren g on corsasport/corsac.c.uk/migweb - pm him he's fitted countless (lol) x18xe's into corsa b's.. (same kettle aint it.)
In the meantime what do you want to know - its no different from any small block valver conversion..?
btw i was going to vote 2.0 8v seh on carbs. lol.

Peester is yours a 18xe or 18xe1? I think I may have made my mind up anyway
Next question - what box is best to use with the x18xe1?
Ps I only really wanted to know if it's worth doing over the 16xe but after some more reading I've made a decision.
Use an f13/15 out of a corsa. I have a couple of good threads will link them on here when I'm on the pc. Yeah they're only 115bhp, but I reckon you could get good gains with head work, cams and an exhaust.
I want to put one in my saloon, just need to find a suitable donor :)
as ive said before there is always x18's with the cable tb in my local scrappy. let me know if you cant find one locally
Z18XE it then 125bhp thats whats in my Astra, and it goes well!
Scott, the z18xe is fly-by-wire and is subsequently a pita to wire in.

mines actually the z18xe, same as x18xe1. But binning o.e management and inlet meant i'de have no issues with fly-by throttle etc.

yay.. looks like a x18xe1.. i think. All z14/z16's etc look the same lol.
Good stuff. Will be keeping an eye.

Evening good people!
I have for you an actual update!! YES an update lol
So here she is looking very sorry for herself not having been touched for nearly a year - shame on me i know.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7817.jpg
However all of my previous work looks ok still
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7818.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7819.jpg
To get the ball rolling i stripped the front struts off the hub carriers
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7877.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7878.jpg
the end result ready for some cleaning
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7880.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7881.jpg
that sorted i moved back to the car, jacking it up a bit to have a poke around
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7882.jpg
remember this!! Its the main reason i was going to go with the saloon arches as it really needs a quarter given the amount of rust and damage to the arch (the damage goes up past the area a normal repair panel would cover)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7883.jpg
and this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7884.jpg
having never investigated this cr@p properly i decided attack it with the grinder, now i kew the filler was thick but ffs!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7885.jpg
once it was ground back you can see the arch has been beaten back all the way to the crease of the arch 3ugger!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7886.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7889.jpg

Looking to investigate further i decided to remove the sill - spot welds uncovered
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7890.jpg
drilled out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7891.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7892.jpg
Then i cut a small chunk out knowing there was a support between the sill and the body in there somewere
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7893.jpg
there it is down there
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7894.jpg
Little did i know not that i was too surprised it was rotten as fook anyway!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7896.jpg
so i chopped some more away to see how bad it was
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7898.jpg
Mmmm another hole in a stupid place to get to
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7899.jpg
some more chopping
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7900.jpg
looking sh1t - i could really do with getting in there to repair it properly, i will have to have a think as to what to do.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7902.jpg
As it was getting dark i moved inside to get on with some turrets - some steel i bent earlier
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7903.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7904.jpg
cleaned that up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7906.jpg
and made a lid out of 4mm

and the inside
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7910.jpg
then cleaned it off

James, how much for you to make a set of turrets for the loon??

ouch that is very rotten, i know you have the skills to sort it easy enough though
What are you using to clean up welds like that? As it ends up almost perfectly uniform, may well be a flap disc and skills but thought I'd ask in case there was a secret :p

It's rotten as in the arches but not too bad else were hopfully should true out ok. The question is do I put a quarter on or try and save what's there?!
cutting the whole quarter off would make repairing the rest a lot easier and fitting a quarter instead of a repair panel and getting it to look right may be easier. just depends how original you want it to be i guess

Exactly that both the inner arch repair and the arch it's self would turn out best with a full quarter, it's cost more than originality. to be honest I don't give a fook how original it is, it's basically got a gurder for a front panel anyway!

lol this line cracked me up. Nice skills as per usual, sure you'll sort it out in no time. And i would go for the whole quarter route myself, save hassle and time :)

20-03-12, 11:22 AM
Hello me again!
I stopped late after work last night to get some cleaning done and really get my teeth back in to this so here goes
Hubs and carriers in to the degreaser then the hot wash
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/ea2cacb5.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/61a57444.jpg
All cleaned off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/340a1efb.jpg
When i parted the hubs from the carriers part of the bearing decided it would stay behind so before i went any further i needed them to part company.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/b83fa83f.jpg
In order to remove this (for those who dont know) my prefered method is:
Clamp the hub in the vice
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/8d404e5e.jpg
Use the angle grinder (preferably with a thin 1mm disc) and cut a slit in the remainder of the old bearing being carefull not to cut all the way through - even if you do you can clean it up with some sand paper afterwards.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/6b57adaf.jpg
Find a suitable hammer and chistle
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/6879f8b2.jpg
And bash the fecker so it cracks
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/b8806207.jpg
It then simply slides off leaving you with the hub indamaged (hopfully)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/29711273.jpg
And the same for the other side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/240dd961.jpg
Now they were both free from bearing remenance
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/3ebbf422.jpg
It was on with the cleaning - fine sand first for the delicate machined surfaces
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/e6c353c5.jpg
as so
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/e3f511f6.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/72f54d75.jpg
then i taped those areas up so the more corse media in the blaster wouldnt damage them
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/449fd9a5.jpg
Count Vaux Alot
20-03-12, 11:23 AM
In to the blaster with the hub carriers and the hubs (old bearings left in place in the carriers so the machined surfaces dont get damaged there and i dont have to tape them up)
out them come looking bling
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/02d3fde5.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/bb0274fe.jpg
Gave the hubs a dust of acid etch primer on the back face
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/ecc6c10f.jpg
once that was dry i polished up the machined faces in the lath
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/7b114193.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/d5708e2f.jpg
All done and ready for some colour when i get round to choosing the exact right one.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/d8282c12.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/e7edebb7.jpg
I lightly greased the polished surfaces and bagged them for safe keeping
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/bb9b6987.jpg
Carriers primed ready for paint too, i think they came out ok :)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/49825e1b.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/e9868ebf.jpg
So going back in time a bit while this lot was in the blaster i startet to strip the rear axle down, its crispy but not rotten
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/15c1f067.jpg
Drums off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/66d24c5c.jpg
one for reference
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/cc14c2c5.jpg
N/S stripped fully - the allen key bolts that hold the stub axle are alway a pita

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/f64db5a4.jpg
And gave it the best cleaning i could given its size lol
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/083aa76b.jpg

Nice mate, very nice, i wish i had access to the machines you do, and a work shop, would be so much nicer and motivating to work on my cars, as working off the drive you always have to keep cleaning up and cant leave thing sat for when you next come back to it etc..
Awesome work James. How come you've jumped rebuild then?

Hi everybody all i can say is what a weekend! I hope everyone had a good one?
I want to start by saying thanks to Mr Frills for all his help on Saturday - cheers buddy!
My weekend started early Saturday morning with a road trip to collect the new engine, well worth the £43.81 i paid for it ;D and its apparently had a new (although it looks reman) head 3000miles ago!
All bundled in the back of the van
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7916.jpg
As the weather was so nice the engine came out of the van on the crane
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7918.jpg
and straight on the the engine stand outside
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7920.jpg
ready for the strip down
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7921.jpg
Inlet off
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7922.jpg
New head revealed
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7923.jpg
the ports are a healthy size as standard on this head
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7924.jpg
looks to have had a new cam belt as well as you would expect i suppose
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7926.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7927.jpg
With the engine stripped as far as i wanted at this point attentions turned to the nova
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7928.jpg
We cleared all the crap from the inside out

as it was starting to get dark we lowered the nova back down to earth ready for Sundays activities
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7951.jpg
With the car back on the ground Frills did some sanding of the engine bay to try and tidy things up a little
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7952.jpg
looking better in there - it turns out that the rusty looking area in the corner is staining were some grinding filings have got wet - result!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7953.jpg
As it was dark outside now i decided to move back inside and strip the engine down a little more ready for some cleaning

spots drilled out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7969.jpg
Once I'd drilled the spots out i ran a scraper down the seam to make sure I'd got them all
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7970.jpg
then i set at the quarter with the grinder
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7971.jpg
like a bean can
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7973.jpg
Opened up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7974.jpg
revealing the true extent of the rot - as i thought not as bad as the other side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7975.jpg
still reasonable sh!t though
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7977.jpg
I then spent ages trimming up all the edges, removing spot welds and cleaning areas up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7979.jpg
at the front of the wheel arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7980.jpg
and the back
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7982.jpg
Then I concentrated my efforts removing all the crud off the inner sill in front of the arch ready to start repairing the area.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7983.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7984.jpg
and inside the front of the arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7986.jpg
Some more sketching, firstly of the rust to be removed

Then began to transfer the measurements to some new metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7988.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7990.jpg
Happy i had what i needed i chopped the rust out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7989.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7991.jpg
new metal to size
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7992.jpg
a bend added
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7993.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7994.jpg
the scallop and the hole beaten in
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7995.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7996.jpg
it goes here
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7997.jpg
Before welding the new in i cleaned of the inner sill with the DA
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7998.jpg
and brushed on some Bilt Hamber rust killer
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7999.jpg
New metal welded home - not the lip added around the hole on the new metal to match the old
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8001.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8002.jpg
With that in place i chopped some more of the inner arch away
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8003.jpg
Count Vaux Alot
25-03-12, 11:13 PM
and began to clean up the inner arch return lip
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8004.jpg
more new metal cut to a rough size
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8005.jpg
welded in - more rust killer brushed on
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8006.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8007.jpg
from the inside of the arch
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8008.jpg
At this point it was time to muster some bravery and start to cut the new quarter to size
No going back now
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8009.jpg
tried for fit
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8010.jpg
I've cut the quarter in this way to try and avoid welding, grinding and filling over these delicate ribbed edges
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8011.jpg
and the other end
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8013.jpg
getting there
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8014.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF8015.jpg

that inner piece you made, dont suppose you fancy making another?
wish i lived closer so i could come and lend a hand or more likely just try not to get in the way

Hi Burgo, i'm glad i inspire you even if it means you hate me for it at the same time. The inner piece was quite time consuming to make (as i'm sure you can now appreciate given your recent efforts) so i will only make one more and thats for the other side lol
Your more than welcome to pop in if you are ever down this way :)

I'd check the end float on the crank James, as these things are awful for it with the hydro clutches they come with, mine had about 3mm (yes, mm lol)

Thanks Brains, i'm hoping to get a bit more done at the end of the week/weekend when my sills turn up.
I'm still on the hunt for an O/S quarter and both front wings and doors if anyone can help?
as we discussed previously, my van driver told me he only gets down your way once a month, so the doors would be another 2 weeks to get to you.
Thanks again guys much appreciated :)

Just make sure it's not completely eaten like mine was, could have measured mine with a tape measure lol

Morning good people, as you know i'm faced with some really sh!te inner rear arches as below
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7900.jpg
The better one of the two
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/DSCF7977.jpg
I'm contemplating the solution - repair the inners with patches or similar or tub them. The latter is obviously overkill, time consuming and not really necessary but would make a neater job and looks cool!
Opinions?
