Yes I have given in again and brought another its a beige MK1 on a B plate and i just like it plus it was very reasonably priced :d.
Plans for it are to be confirmed but it will be getting 'The Plough', a new engine (not 100% decided but it wont be a 2lt 16v), rear arches or full 1/4's, prob sills, a respray (in the same colour) corsa B servo and M/C, coilovers and some other bits and bobs.
Here are the first pics once i got it back to the shack on tuesday.

I might finish this one lol
The last one that got finished was the best one imo, but they've all been differnet and full of excellent fabrication, there always seemed to be a good bit of catching up to do on a Sunday evening lol

what about these?

I think you should go hardcore track car with this.
Not as much as the green one with widebody etc, just something simple and effective.

what about these?
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=160910
Personally im not a fan - i already have the above wheels as i was going to fit them on my mk1 astra estate but ive changed my mind. I like that sort of style and they looked good on my brown saloon although they arnt the same wheel.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/ncCCweb174.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/ncCCweb181.jpg
Looks quite solid underneath.
Good project :)
i had a parchment one that eventually rotted away, its mucky bits are in my current one...
it had a snowplough, wraparound spoiler, brown sr interior, 5.5j14 opel (SR) steelies, e16se and when it was clean, looked damned good (in my humble opinion) & attracted no old bill at all.... cos a beige car simply can't go fast...
i'll be watching this one too
looks pretty good, i like those wheels you said you have, are they Astra Champion wheels ?
Count Vaux Alot
06-01-11, 05:46 PM
It should look good once im done - Edd im not sure if they are champion wheels the guy i brought them off said he brought them from Germany for his golf but the offset was wrong. i think they may have been original irmscher specials as they are the same as the ones on this opel ascona c sprint unless someone can tell me otherwise???

As said, the important bits look solid. Still got a fair bit of welding to do which I know you'll love. You should get MK999 to come over - he needs the welding practice.
I reckon you should go, maybe he'll teach you what progress is.

Im sure with your talents it will soon be a top motor James. After the brown saloon it would be great to see you build another good all rounder as oppose to being primarily focused on track like the last project etc. I get the impression you enjoy the shows as well as track days so it would be good to have the best of both worlds. :)

Any one with any sense removes the engine through the bottom
No. That's bollocks.
have you never tried it then?? since henry ford invented the production line for cars, the engine has been put in from below, thus it will come back down a lot easier.
Gravity declares its easier to drop then to lift....
Therefore Mr Gravity & his apple loving theory leads me to belive lowering is the new lifting :)
Can't wait to see Benn fit his LET and F28 through the top to try and keep his theory intact....

That scratch noise is gonna be a monster cringe considering how shiny and smoothed those chassis legs are
I pulled the 1.2 through the top with out much problem with gb attached.
If the car has a subframe then under is better
Location of firewall spot welds are in my inner wing thread in articles mate :)

Yeah, it caught on everything. And i had to remove more parts (tie bars)
Can't wait to see Benn fit his LET and F28 through the top to try and keep his theory intact....
Sadly as i said in my thread, cause of the size of the F28 i might have to fit it from the under side.
But i just cant see why when the hoist is there why not just lift it straight out..
Sorry for the thread hi-jack James.

:thumb: was it a sh!tter to remove on its own?
All I do Benn is drop the engine on the floor, use the hoist to lift & then lower the car onto the engine, then lift the engine up into place.
Removal is the same, use hoist to drop engine on floor, use hoist to lift car up & then just pull the engine out & drop the car back on its wheels.
lol i know how it works...
:thumb: was it a sh!tter to remove on its own?
naa, easy tbh the biggest problem is space, I used the 90 angle air drill but couldn't reach 1 weld so a flat thin chisel was used, if your reusing the full panel take your time on drilling out as the metal isn't thick so try not to go through both panels,

He's getting happy about his discipline now, lost cause :(
Anyone want the plans to a chassis to fit nova dimensions? More calculations/research than your average locost, about 120kg or so for the frame work. Should be a very capable track machine. No raging homo mincers need apply.
Yeah, it caught on everything. And i had to remove more parts (tie bars)
best way is to undo the track rod ends & simply remove the complete engine/gbox & suspension as a single unit.

Yeah i know, but if you need to then say roll the car back in the garage you have to refit all of that to do it..
James, why have you removed the rack and everything? Surely you dont need to..
benn, as i've said on here too many times.... put a bar up each chassis leg & move it like a big wheel barrow... it looks funny too.

Ok question people - opinions on saloon arches on a hatch I've seen it done before but not on any nova 'to my taste' and as I'm going to replace the rear arches do you think it's worth doing?
Personally, the box arches are what makes a nova a nova for me, and one of it's coolest features, I do like the early vag style round arches on a loon but on a hatch it just wouldn't appeal. I think it's a very personal choice though.
looks wrong imo, keep the standard arches PLEASE lol
Count Vaux Alot
11-01-11, 07:51 PM
MK I have a very similar opinion myself it's just a thought I'm playing with given I have the option - I could really do with at least one full quarter panel to repair the car and hadrians have none in stock. Ffs!
Ah yes, but round arches = mega low with easy rim clearance!
Count Vaux Alot

This is my other thought lol
Ah yes, but round arches = mega low with easy rim clearance!
But, it still looks like it's on standard suspension when dropped 80mm, so as far that goes (except maybe for a track/race car) the hatch arches win again.
the front end looked awesome as you know, wether they would work on the back as well i dunno. get southie to do a proper photoshop
This is my other thought lol
Retain that thought, get southward bound on the "shop" case!

like the car a proper retro vauxhall:thumb:
But, it still looks like it's on standard suspension when dropped 80mm, so as far that goes (except maybe for a track/race car) the hatch arches win again.
But hatch arches will only see a 6j or 6 and a half rim and no wider than a 195 tyre, The sky is the limit with round arches = win :d

Next job was to remove the fire wall to gain access to the battery tray area - it will be replaced once all the repairs are done.

And then the trickery ones behind the o/s turret
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige165.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige167.jpg
Out!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige168.jpg

And found another hole - which was to be expected
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige172.jpg

predictably worse that it first seemed
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige178.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige179.jpg

Hatch arches is what makes a nova
Hatch arches are in style with legendary cars like Audi Quartro and delta intergrale not Ford Orion's or Fiat Regatta's which are both turd
It's not like the wheels you've got won't fit under hatch arches as well

I decided i wanted to get the car a little more mobile so on the roll over frame it was.
First i wanted to strengthen up the brackets i had previously used so welded in the triangular section below
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige216.jpg
Both complete
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige217.jpg
And fitted to the car
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige218.jpg
Then fitted the frame front and rear

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige221.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige222.jpg
And an over all shot just because - its a mess i know and the dogs looking at me like wtf are you doing!
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige220.jpg
The take 4 castors
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige224.jpg
And weld them here, thus giving mobility
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige225.jpg
Then to aid the mess issue i knocked up a shelf for some storage
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige229.jpg
I collected the 1600 xe engine and stand from my parents
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige230.jpg
This is dj browneys old engine that i brought from him as he had already had the block decked, cylinder bores re bored to suite corsa vxr pistons, oil squirter's fitted and corsa vxr pistons and rods fitted.
Hers a few quick mobile pics but more on this to follow

but its a good idea, and easy to spin round in the wshop..

cool, engine sounds the business - so those corsa vxr engines are a small block then; they just dont mount-up like a small block does..?
Yeah peester, Oil filter is in a slightly different location too. Block/Head are a bit different (If you see one with the head removed, your understand), The exhaust ports are preety much the same other than the SAI bits, Hence why the VXR turbo etc fits the older smallblocks
Corsa vxr uses an x18 head too
peester
26-01-11, 06:49 PM
yeah i think apparently its gm small block from head up, and fiat-sourced bottom end; hence the big block fixings.
It's all a bit Frankenstein but should make for big power small engines when upgrades start improving. 300+ is achievable now and as far as I can see the ball is just getting rolling

Hi everyone - for those who haven't seen the pics or herd my plans already regarding the engine choice then here they are.
I will be using a 1600xe head and block with standard crank, however the pistons, and rods are from a corsa vxr along with the turbo (under piston oil squirter's have been fitted). I will be using a custom inlet manifold and stand alone management. This will probably be mounted to an f20 box.
Some pics for comparison between standard 1600xe pistons on the right and corsa vxr on the left - notice how much chunkier the vxr rods are.

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo013.jpg
Some pics of the vxr pistons on their own (these are second hand spares i have the ones used in the engine are brand new)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo003.jpg
And some of the vxr turbo fitted to the 1600xe in my old green nova

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo008.jpg
The oil filter location is obviously an issue but i have an oil filter re locater to solve this

Love the jig. I could do with one, i just want one to roll it on its side...

Nice one mate thanks for that any recommendations from having used the stuff?
(I built the jig ages ago 2007 iirc from some plans i had - if i were to do it again i would do a proper spit job but that ones ok to be fair)

After much procrastination waisting my time tidying up i finally got round to doing something.
Started here and removed this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige260.jpg
Then i decided to tackle the rust hole in the battery tray and the base for the corsa B brake pedal assembly
So i began with this - removing a few obvious spot welds
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige259.jpg
Then out with a few more less obvious ones and most of the rusted metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige261.jpg
Gave the general area a clean up to see what i was dealing with
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige262.jpg
cut some more out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige263.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige264.jpg
Followed by further cleaning
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige265.jpg
And the removal of the last of the battery clamp
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige266.jpg
Then decided to take out a little more of the original battery tray so the servo had plenty of new thicker material either side of it.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige267.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige268.jpg
I gave the hole a good measuring and cut up a new piece of metal to go in there
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige269.jpg
Then on to a spot of friday night bending with my make shift bended
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige271.jpg
Bent (like Simps :p)

It came out surprisingly well considering i used no specialist tools whats so ever on this one
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige274.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige275.jpg
Tried it for fit - not bad for a first attempt
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige276.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige277.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige278.jpg
As i have more repairs to do before this can be welded in i moved on to the rust hole.
A few more spot welds out - and bent this skin over
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige280.jpg
And gave the area another clean
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige281.jpg
The rotten material (were the hole is) is part of the skin (there are 3 skins in this area just to make things easy) attached to the highlighted red area so this will need removing also
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/areatoremove.jpg
So i decided to drill one million holes just for fun in the hope I might hit some of the spot welds in the area
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige284.jpg
At this point i was bored so decided to open an old wound on a sharp piece of metal just to see how much blood came out ass you do
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige287.jpg
The offending metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige288.jpg
Feeling slightly aggravated at this point i gave up
ohh its fighting back lol
just for reference, where you drilled all the holes, that only holds the turrett to the inner wing and nothing else, the 4 you drilled earlier hold the inner wing to the bulkhead,

I know its the inner wing im trying to remove as thats the rotten bit hidden amongst all the other bits.
so the section from the turrett to the battery tray is being cut out and replaced, i get you now,
Count Vaux Alot
29-01-11, 12:30 AM
Thats the one mate - the bit ive bent up in the two photos above the photo with the red highlighted bit needs to come out, that is the section from the turret to the battery tray.
Nice bit of progress, looks like you got all the repairs well planned out
Shame about the finger tho :(
coming along nicely, whats the advantage of using a corsa servo im sure this has been covered somewhere but eh,i have no clue
Count Vaux Alot
29-01-11, 11:33 AM
The Corsa stuff allows you to remove the novas brake balance bar that runs along the bulk head, this means you benefit from a better more positive pedal feel and save weight too as well as removing the m/c and servo from the engine bay.

like the sound of this build. looks interesting.
Id say put the loon arches on it. Ive always thought it would look cool when done right, with a low stance, nice wide mini lights and the poverty spec bumpers. Think in that colour it would look extra cool.
Question. Is the length of the vxr rods the same as a c16xe/se, or is the piston and rod shorter to make a lower compression ratio. basicaly would the vxr rods with a c16se piston be a similar comp ratio to the standard c16se rod and piston setup. This is assuming the gudgeon pin from the vxr rods fit the c16se/xe piston.
if that makes sense?
get well soon btw.

the shorter stroke of the 1600 will equate to a longer rod. as the piston heights are the same.

Best bit is, you didn't specify which 1600 you believe has the shorter stroke lol

So on with the repairs
The area in question
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige291.jpg
Gave it a clean up on the underside
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige292.jpg
And cut the section between the turret and the bulkhead out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige293.jpg
The this bit needed to come out too
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige294.jpg
Zip
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige295.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige296.jpg
Now this is the section i just cut out end on - i need to replicate this shape for the repair section - more on this later.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige297.jpg
I whipped this section out as it was in the way
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige298.jpg
And did some more cleaning, its best to have a sound base to start from.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige299.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige300.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige301.jpg
Back to the repair section i mentioned earlier
I had a measure up and marked out the metal
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige302.jpg
Then shaped out the 'V' section using to bits of box section
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige303.jpg
The added the bend
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige304.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige305.jpg
Count Vaux Alot
29-01-11, 11:13 PM
Then tightened the bend
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige306.jpg
And there you have it, the basis of the repair section
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige307.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige308.jpg
And next to the section i cut out thats its replacing
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige309.jpg
Trimmed and shaped a little
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige310.jpg
All welded in snug as a bug
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige313.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige314.jpg
And tidied up on the underside
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Beige/Beige315.jpg
Once i was happy there i moved on to the next section that joins the turret and the bulk head
Marked out - difficult to see i know

Bendy bendy
