I know of quite a few SC'd DC5's, EP3's, Ariel Atoms etc running perfectly well..

There is always the niggling doubt with any build

Ben
30-03-11, 05:01 PM
Yeah too true, i dont know much about Honda's at all, obviously know they are pretty bullet proof but same as anything else when you push the boundries you push your luck.

Is there a rule of thumb to stick between?

Stoo
30-03-11, 05:13 PM
Well, the biggest issue is heat and knock.High compression engine see.
And these can't be intercooled.
They can be after cooled but it isn't great.

So usually, around 7psi, which is what I have is safe.
Good for 300bhp easily and realible too

I am looking in to water meth for the future.

Thats impressive i must say, what torque figure you getting? when i was in malaysia i was working on a NA DC5 in the ATCS and that was getting 278whp, however that was a full race engine with the VTEC removed. Good work pal!

Looks like fun!

Stoo
01-04-11, 10:46 AM
It was about 183lbft atw.

Which is 215lbft fly torque.

Mmmmmmm ATCS DC5s driooooool

So today i re-fitted all the rear interior...

The combo of solid mounts amplifying every little noise, road noise and the exhaust, it got too much.
So its all back in and so much quieter :)

I think the weight is negligible now anyhow!!

I also had my drivers side engine mount out to give that a tighten up as i was getting excessive engine movement and this was the prime suspect...
All sorted now.

Also today, I got a few boxes from OPIE :)

So, everything is on hold for now.....

I got told yesterday at 3PM, 'Cancel everything planned, You're off to Afghanistan in 3 weeks for 3 months!!!'

Winner!
I will accumulate bits over the coming months though and no doubt have a fitting splurge when I get back!

Top priority is brakes!!
I have got or have sourced all of it already However.

I am going for;
TGM Hoses
RBF 600 Fluid
Paul G Front Discs (2 piece AP discs with Aly Bells) AMAZING!
DS2500 Front Pads
OEM Rear Discs
Yellowstuff Rear Pads

Also on the list....
Gauges (Oil press/Oil Temp definitely, Possibly Boost, Poss AFR, Poss EGT) Yet to decide
Oil Cooler
Baffled sump
Tyres (AD08s or RS-Rs)
Paint Bumpers
Mesh grille
Refurb Calipers
Bla bla....

On another note, I need someone to look after the motor when I'm away. Give it a run out once a week and so on.
My wife drove it tonight and shat in her pants pretty much!

I'll have to ask my best mate I think!
There's no way I trust her to take it out once a week!! Hahaha!

Hope you have a safe trip.

Look forward to updates when you return. And your mate is very lucky lol

Can't you hide it in the back of a tristar and take it with you? Mount a machine gun and use it as a technical..? lol

imho mixing pad compounds as severely as that would make the ABS work its tits off far too hard...

Stick to atleast the same brand front and rear, ideally same compound too.

Awesome. Excellent video too, love the fast and furious gear changes!

Stoo
06-04-11, 11:16 PM
Stu, proven set up on the DC5 mate
OEM brakes are atrocious despite the brembos!!

Rear hardly does any braking and the Fronts are a huge improvement over stock so that little extra at the back helps balance it again.

Cheers stevie

Stuart
07-04-11, 10:10 AM
Hmm fair enough. I know that FWD cars do feck all at the back ;) but its been 'proven' that mixing rude spec fronts with ****e spec (read that as 'grippier when cold than the fronts') makes the back end twitchy, or in ABS's case, makes it work hard and start cooking fluid :(

Can you get freddo 25's for the rear too? (or even 3K's but they might be stupid money)

Stoo
07-04-11, 11:08 AM
Yeah I get you mate. I'll see how they go
Although, I'm not sure you get just how shocking the brakes on these can be.
The HUGE upgrade up front will balance out the rear mismatch.
The only reason I have the YS's is cos I was given them!

Yeah you can get 2500s for the rear
May look in to them at some point

Stuart
07-04-11, 11:40 AM
I know how bad OEM brakes on a 'fastish' car can be... Seems to be the one thing that gets overlooked by the cheap end of the car market :( I guess putting a £2K brake upgrade option on a list would see a low take up.

Stoo
08-04-11, 10:14 AM
See it all the time with most 'warm' cars now.

Unless its got a fancy badge then brakes are an afterthought!
Even M3s!!

Picked up a Cusco oil catch tank, DRE Shift light and ordered a parcel shelf last night.

DRE Shift light fitted.
Piece of cake, took about 5 mins.
Got it mounted to the wheel cowling in front of the clocks with a bit of sticky foam.

Illumination is
Blue, Blue, Blue, Amber, RED!!
Pretty bright too.

Got it set so the first LED illuminates at 7800RPM, then 8000, then 8200, then 8400 and then the Red flashes at 8600RPM
Quite a nifty bit of kit :D

Nah not yet mate, soon though.

Saloony
20-04-11, 10:59 PM
Rev light?? What the point of the rev counter then?

Stoo
20-04-11, 11:49 PM
Lights are very bright in your peripheral vision so theres no need to have your eyes off the road/track.

Plenty of people use them, including F1 cars!

Saloony
21-04-11, 11:47 PM
Would say the counter is more in view, but what ever tickles your winky

Stoo
22-04-11, 07:58 AM
Not If your completely focussed on the road.

You need to take your eyes away and refocus on the needle/dial whereas the lights in your peripheral vision negate the need to look elsewhere.

Trust me it works

Saloony
22-04-11, 05:24 PM
Not doubting it working/works, just to me seems pointless. Sound and feel, and counter for assistance.

MK999
22-04-11, 05:34 PM
Helps to get it a tad more accurate, but then again your shift point changes in every gear and it takes an accelerometer to judge where that should be really (the ar$e dyno is not so accurate) I wouldn't use one myself but I see the point of it.

peester
22-04-11, 07:14 PM
i like the shift lights, just not the adhiesive tape holding them down..

Stoo
22-04-11, 09:58 PM
Agreed peest. On the list to change ;)

My shift point is always the same now I have the shift lights ;)
A couple of hundred revs before the limiter.

I'd love to say it's at the point power drops off but it's making power all the way to the redline and power is only Limited by revs. If it revved higher it'd produce more!

Stoo
22-04-11, 09:59 PM
Sound/feel isn't always easy with a helmet on, windows up etc.
Concentration levels can get the better of you.

MK999
22-04-11, 10:00 PM
I'd love to say it's at the point power drops off but it's making power all the way to the redline and power is only Limited by revs. If it revved higher it'd produce more!

Fair point, your shift point most likely is the same in every gear then.

Also, common misconception that shift point should be the point where power starts to drop, peak power should be smack bang in the centre of your rev range, not at the top.

Stoo
22-04-11, 10:36 PM
Why would you rev much higher than the peak Power? If it drops off quite quickly then it's time to change.

MK999
23-04-11, 12:57 AM
Why would you rev much higher than the peak Power? If it drops off quite quickly then it's time to change.

You want the highest average power across your gear, from start to finish, going 'up the hill' to the peak and then starting at the bottom doesn't achieve that, starting halfway up the hill and going right over to the halfway on the other side does.

Stoo
23-04-11, 09:23 AM
I see your point but it's not really relevant to me, as I said, linear power with no drop off.

scott.parker
23-04-11, 02:19 PM
**** to here, see the bumper mate, i hate it when ****s have no regard for others cars etc, i hate parking in big carparks like tesco, always find a dent most times...

Been on an unofficial 1/4 mile day today run by straightliners.

I just couldnt get this thing to launch properly, anyhow..
Shift light worked well!

Hit 13.6s@107mph*
2.30s 60ft
130.2mph over 1/2 mile.*

I was only 2mph over the 1/2 mile behind a new m3 :)

I was expecting quicker and I'm sure with better tyres and a better launch it will go quicker.*

Driver error on my part as I'm no drag pro!!

I will say though, as the day went on my times got worse as my launch hot better and a lot of people said the same so I'm not so sure of the accuracy of the timing. It was also very slightly uphill and a strong headwind on the airfield.

MK999
25-04-11, 06:43 PM
I see your point but it's not really relevant to me, as I said, linear power with no drop off.

Hence:

Fair point, your shift point most likely is the same in every gear then.

However, common misconception stands :p

Lee H
25-04-11, 08:13 PM
That 60ft really spoilt your times tbh. I was doing 2.1 with XE Nova on standard diff but lots of practice which obviously helps massively.

Fair play on the terminal though,
MR2 did 13.4 @ 99mph so if you sorted the launch you would destroy that time.

Stoo
25-04-11, 08:42 PM
Oh for absolute sure mate.

The surface was absolutely shocking.
It's like rough concrete airfield surface which switches to smooth tarmac at the 60ft point with a slight drop off the concrete to asphalt which caused me to spin up again losing precious time.

No doubt at a proper strip with decent tyres, it should be in the very low 13- very high 12s.

Did you see the 1/2 mile speed too.

I have 130.5mph on a slip here.
However,
A brand new M3 V8 ran 12.9s 1/4s all day with consistent 132mph 1/2 mile speeds!

So, with the right launch....

Lee H
25-04-11, 08:48 PM
With the right launch I would say low 13's for sure.

I destroyed a new BMW 135 M sport by a second over the 1/4 in the MR2, to say he wasnt happy to lose to a rusty 25 year old car would be an understatement!

Stoo
25-04-11, 08:54 PM
LOL!
I was against a TVR Chimera that was running consistent 12.7s all day today and apart from my launch where he edged ahead, I stayed the same distance from him up to the 1/4 mile line.

So yeah, new tyres it is then!! lol!

Stoo
28-04-11, 06:59 PM
Decided I'm gonna go back to OEM shocks and eibach springs as I really can't get on with coilovers. I can't set them up how I want them and I liked the eibachs on my old cars so....

The BCs will be up for sale when I get back and I've just paid for a set of eibach springs off Dave Fox. Cheers dude.

Fitted some gathers rear speakers today too courtesy of weggy to give it a bit more sound. Miles happier!! I think I may go for an active 10" sub to give my toons more punch (d&b/dubstep etc)

Still waiting on my parcel shelf to come though.

Got a massive list of bits to buy/fit when I get back http://type-r-owners.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
