View Full Version : craig 2nd burgandy nova project
right well was meant to get that white shell of scorge but it never happened for a few reasons so was looking about for a complete nova or even a corsa B but found one in dundee but was sold the next day lol so was texting a few folk etc and got offered this from vxkev. was well chuffed, after smashing my first one way back last december been on the hunt for another burgandy k reg 1.2. i know the colour isnt everyones taste but i personally love it.
its a merit plus 1.2i, top tint screen, magnex gte exhaust system from downpipe back, no cat, k and n air filter, gsi/gte 3 spokes, rear arb and gte front brakes.
dont have alot of plans atm but will be changing the front panel fitting 2 sills, fixing 2 wee patchs in the bay and fitting a new radiator, ive got doors and wings so there not an issue might replace the back archs or just tidy them up. also got a gsi front bumper, spoiler, front coilovers, 60mm rear springs, blue sri interior and sourced a set of 16" softstars from a mate.
heres some pics

Looks a lot better than that other pile of s*it you were going to try and restore...
I like the red against the blue (They had blue stripes from the factory so the blue SR interior looks well and adds to the OE look)
Should be good to see what you do with it fella :)

are you blind,
most of us have scraped better,
i know it can be repaired, but would it not be easer just to get a better shell ?
edit, is that mold on the horn lol
im happy with it, its alot better nick than my old j reg one. front panel 2 doors 2 wings and tidy back archs and will be useable. not wanting a show stopper just something i can bomb about in.
ive got the wings and doors and a whole load of other spares so repairing it isnt as bad as it seems.
got the front lowered on my coilovers today

I know the Sport was rotten that's why I didn't attempt to restore it - Plenty more good shells out there
Who's Craig ? And why give him a break ?
He means greg and i thin.k he means give me a break.
vaughanmc

He said before Craig got the Sport though...Maybe a mis-type in what he wrote
I wasn't having a go at you either incase anybody thinks that lol
Looks better already with the Gsi bumper, centre caps and a bit closer to the ground :d
At the end of the day its all superficial the stuff that needs tidying or replacing on it, the shell itself is pretty good from what i remember so its more than good enough to do up :thumb:
Not all of us have a bottomless pit of money to throw at our Nova's like some, so we just gotta make the most of what we have ;)
(P.S. thats not a dig at you Vaughan seen as you seem to be getting a hard time here lol)

Getting there mate, you doing away with the rear wiper since you've fitted the wee washer bottle ?
na man, the bottle doesnt affect it its the wee bit that goes in.
first nova ive had the the rear washer working
vaughanmc
09-10-10, 06:01 PM
I thought they had 2 pumps if running a rear wiper...? One for the front and one for the rear
My Mk2 has a wee washer bottle and it's only front washers - No rear wiper or washer...
no just 2 outlets on the wee pump on the actual bottle man.

I didn't think the back panel was that bad mate - Get the rust ground back to see how far it actually goes
I'd probably replace it if I was you then you know theres NO chance of it coming back through there :)

Back panels are mate, I tried to get one for the Sport way last year and it was £80 brand new (Pattern Part) well worth it though, I just didn't get round to buying it due to selling the Sport
would make a neater job aswell. ill look into it nearer the time mate.
the floor still solid like it just the rear panel so not too bad imo

Get those splash guards cut off & edges sealed up, get down the scrappies and get some corsa plastic ones. Cut to shape and fit, will never have to replace them again :thumb:
il keep my eye open for a back panel for you chief but it looks plateable in the mean time ;)
aye man think it will be plated up tbh wont even see it behind bumper. Passenger splashguard is solid just the drivers has a hole in, so not to sure what route to take with them yet. My dad asked me to make a template lol
vaughanmc
18-10-10, 08:39 PM
Mine on my Mk2 are ground back, sealed then 'new' ones made from an arctic lorry wheelarch/guard lol
Not the best in the world but they do the job :) Just fixed on with some self tappers and also some Waxoil where the holes were drilled to keep the rot at bay again :)
LIGHTWEIGHT TOO hahahaha
something for me too look into then. Cheers for the advice mate.

Good advice that from faither ;) Take a template and make plastic numbers, done that in the past and fitted them like Vaughan said. Jobs a good un :thumb:
aye think al get ma dad to bring me some corsa arch liners home with him. I original thought about cutting up a spare door to make a metal one but seems alot easier to fit plastic ones..... Plenty time for it all anyway. Rome wasnt built in a day, only spend weekends at it and even at the sometimes dont even know what to do lol lol

am no tryna put you down but that dosent look any better than the last one
last one had no rear inner archs, no rear spring seats, ****ed boot floor, etc..... This needs a front panel (got) sills (not nessisary but sourced) and aye back archs arent the best... Passenger just needs a skim a filler drivers could do with being repaired.
Seen alot worse and i think its worth saving

You crack on mate dont worry about anyone else..
ken were your coming from fella, last one was shagged. Am sure it was bent aswell. Plus i dont need to run this and restore it. Got all the doors wings etc off the old one to go on. All the chassis is solid one.... Was meant to be getting a vr6 dropped in before i got it. So will do for what i need it for. Paid 200 for it. Ive all the panels sitting to get it solid at the front. Just waiting on when ma dads ready to start welding the front end. Also my fav colour and is except same model as my first one.

Just keep on working and itll get there man.
With a little time and effort this can be a nice little motor again, was gonna do me fine and dandy until i got offered one i couldnt refuse.
Believe me though, ive seen the other one in the flesh. This is a million times better than that when you get down to the nitty gritty, is easy enough to change panels but when it comes to needing chassis legs and floors then its time to give up in my opinion so hes on the right track :thumb:
cheers for all the comments good or bad.

started prepping the bumpers for getting them ready for primer - still cant belive a got the gsi bumper for free

i would just plate that rear panel as its hidden and the visable bits look fine. make a template using card of the splash guards and cut them off (leave about 1" or so as its multiple skinned here iirc, see pics) leave a bit of meat on the inside of the new ones and you can spot weld them on at the front and back like i did which adds a bit more strength (from the front and back pics you can see there is about a 2" over lap) you can also see the welds under the sealer. you can trial fit the wings to ensure its a tight fit. remember, measure twice cut once! :thumb:
its a piece of p!ss, i was at this stage about this time of year and did all the welding etc in my ma's driveway

cheers for the how to mark. Think the back panel will be plated as its not seen anyway. Was looking for a back panel but couldnt find any. Priced up some rear archs so will maybe have them by the end of the year. Going see if ma can crack the welder out and get started on the front :)

got more of the front panel off today. Just the crossmember to remove now. Feels really good to have made some progress. Couple wee plates and that will be the bay solid. I know most have scrapped better etc. Im happy with it, its worse saving imo. Love the colour too.
Also was cleaning inner archs, with wire wheel and some kurust.
Have some new parts arriving soon aswell :).
If its dry the morn il have the crossmember removed and ill trial fit the new panel, line everthing up and see whats what.

i did the lower section about 5 years ago but some of this might be relevent, also bear in mind i had an eye on 200bhp at the time so if your defo keeping the power >100bhp you may not need to bother about stitch welding the spot welds on the new crossmember (pic6) but if your welding to the thin or ropey looking metal then just trim it back and add new material (pics 11-17).

PS. that was the turning point for j222bhp, there was thoughts of scrapping/re-shell/getting something new but stupidity won through, it was fixed up and a couple of grand waxed on it for good measure :P
Hey, just finished replacing the crossmember on my Nova GSi XE, kept a bit of a photo diary with a view to posting it here as i couldn't find info myself when researching the job before hand.
gonna keep it relatively short as there are lots of pics, (tried to crop a bit aswell!)
here is the problem, felt the car pull to one side ever so slightly so pulled off and inspected, couldn't see much so then looked under the front bumper and realised i was in a bit of trouble, knew it was a bit soft, just not this much! lucky i stopped, the tie bar had "sheared" the cross member around the area of the tie bar bracket. the damage is easier to see from the 3rd pic, the 4th is just to show the surprisingly good condition of the the usually rotten headlamp area.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/Big_Chap/Crossmember/DSC00113.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/Big_Chap/Crossmember/DSC00115.jpg
the front coilovers had seen better days (purchased in 1996!) so i whipped them off to avo to see if they could be re-furb'd, turns out they were too far gone so i ordered a full new set (could have gotten away with just the dampers being replaced) with the brucie bonus being that they now have rear height adjustment!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/Big_Chap/Crossmember/DSC00117.jpg
got myself a new crossmember (£48 from local parts supplier), the relevant harry hockley plates and then it was up to a mate to weld it all up. strengthened all the spot welded areas with stitch welds and fully welded the plates around the tie bar brackets.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/Big_Chap/Crossmember/DSC00127.jpg
i then sent the crossmember to be powder coated (only to seal the hollow section of the crossmember and to replace all paint which was burnt during the welding)
here is the finished article along with re-furb'd tie bar brackets, poly bushes and avo coilovers

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v82/Big_Chap/Crossmember/DSC00149.jpg
i also got to work cutting out the old crossmember and replacing any metal which looked like letting me down in the next wee while. getting the perfect fit for the new crossmember meant constantly bolting up the crossmember, marking the chassis legs, removing the crossmember and cutting. i wasn't too confident with the material around the ends of the chassis legs so i cut back a bit further and rebuilt with fresh steel, the drivers side had been pretty much destroyed anyway so it was time to refresh the old plating and fabrication skills.

big chap - cheers again for the advice and pics, really helping, not the best of weather atm and the lack of funds means it wont be completed anytime soon, but will be worth it in the long run.
least it can be fixed....
bainyboy - didnt get round to putting screws in but been told of a few folk thats how they done so that the front end can be aligned properly and so the lights, grille, wings and front bumper sit corectly.
as said once everything fits and aligns properly it will be dropped out and al the bits letting it down tidyed up.
the whole bay needs tidyed up so im toying with the idea of removing engine, but atm dont have a strutbrace to hold the legs in place
the whole bay needs tidyed up so im toying with the idea of removing engine, but atm dont have a strutbrace to hold the legs in place
Thats what i would do, as you said funds restrict progress, so you may aswell take your time and do it proper so wack the engine out, sort the bay out, paint the engine etc etc. Wish i had somewhere to put mine as i would be doing the same, as once its on the road the last thing you would wanna do is take it off the road to do jobs like that :thumb: :thumb:
Rotten hunk of junk !!!!!!!!!!!!! aaaaahhhh haha lol well in mate tis getting better now wont be long till it looks like good old dfs :thumb:
cheers connor.
Cle... Aye its getting there like. Made some good progress recentaly.

its probably not so much of the front panel being out of alignment but due to the fact you have all the panerls off mate and its a pian to get them how they were a wee tip for next time mate mark all wing and bonnet bolts before you take them off will save you a lot of time and hassle bud
cheers dougie.
getting a hand to see if a can get all the panels all lined properly before getting welded.
thanks to kev for pointing me in the right direction for getting the front enf lined up, its now on, drivers headlight sitting a bit weird but i have a feeling the drivers wing is to blame, so will need to dig out my gm drivers wing and use that instead,
also bumper back ****ed so think im going source a spare bumper with bumper etc
ma mate is going be coming down in few weeks to weld it on
http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/151094_153601561351132_100001038669748_292835_1718 680_n.jpg

spent a bit a time at the nova the day, got some metal cut to get welded into fron archs were front panel meets. Also once dont that fitted a bumper bar and the best gsi bumper out the 2 i have, refitted wings lights and grille, looks alot better and quite pleased with the result. Next to do what interior carpet, was soaking, ripped front half out and the underlay, soaked up all the water and put some towels down to try dry it out. Took a few pics of the car as i was bored lol. Once snow goes my pal is coming down to weld it all up. Also meant to be getting some parts of a local lad for some parts i have, gte seats, standard rear bench, front anti roll bar and rear window surrounds, just need to wait and see if he turns up. Will post pics in a bit.
