View Full Version : route advice... road trip to north wales
next week, i have the chance to go for a roadtrip in my nova.... the missus is taking the kids up to harlech to camp for the week....
so i'm starting from hinckley and heading up to shrewsbury, then i'm after some local knowledge of what are the best roads for some fun that get me over to harlech......

You best watch out for killer sheep !!!!!!lol
i'm used to them, i'm from a farming family..... its those yellow boxes i'm more worried about....
M6toll :)
then behave on the ASS
M6TOLL???? M6BLOODYTOLL???? don't insult me.... i live in the midlands.... i don't intend to use even the real m6 to get there.........
what are the midlands? they dont exist, its north or south :p
we are the jam in an otherwise bland sandwich
A5 all the way to Shrews... But you knew that. Then take whichever rods on the map which have the most warnings and wreaths by the side
at last, a sane voice, at the moment, it looks like welshpool, dolgellau & barmouth is my route.. but i'm hoping more sence will prevail & some gems will appear to me.
either that or i'm getting some L33 LEG show plates....;)
That's the route I'd take, not that bad a road but still lots of fun

A5104 is a good laugh.
And the evo triangle, but thats abit norf for you.
And stuart, why behave on the a55? It goes about 1/2 mile away from my house, its a good topspeed runner:)

Be careful wherever you go around there Mowglers. We went to Portmadoc a few weeks ago and saw hidden speed traps galore, and they weren't in locations that the satnav or speedcamera websites knew.

Is the Evo triangle by Horseshoe pass?
I Instantly though Horseshoe then realised it's a big detour
1. i would never attempt to drive quick down a road that has its own fan club.
2. the A55 is fine if i was going to ireland on the ferry, i am not.
3. i am thinking b roads.....
4. i already know that the nice head of northwales police hates anything with an engine.
5. i want to enjoy the trip & not end up in court.
i'm also looking at the road thru knockin, that eventually goes via Bala, the b4936, followed by the a4212
The ASS tends to be crawling with filth... well it is when I go lol
Ooo I like a bit of this... off to my car for my map!
Mowgli you and my Granddad would get on like a house on fire, his Welsh B road knowledge... or any road in Wales or the midlands would put 99.999% of the Local population to shame
Rysee, me & him were probably at school at the same time.........
personally i just love driving thru Knockin, just to laugh at the village stores.....

when i was driving grain tippers back in the nineties, i used to drive round there quite a bit... and some of the roads are astounding
Haha he's be offended by that he isn't that old :d
evo triangle is amazing, but its certainly used by a lot of people.
However.... search and explore always works tbh, buy your self a proper OS map and get some plot and bash done. Get yourself lost, and take the sat nav for when you want to get home.
Its the only way with welsh roads there are some absolute stunning roads hidden away. You really need the OS Map's...

+1
Exactly what I do every summer! (had a load of vids on youtube but took them down when the lad in his mums MR2 got mugged off by his own vid)
i have a well developed sense of direction. so i will be resisting the need for a shatnav, also the object of the exercise is to rendezvous with the family at a campsite, so i think i will save my adventuring for the way back.....

Tbf mike, that's the most direct route with some amazing roads. I love driving that way when we go to shell island. Whereabouts are you staying mike?

Not quite so boring!
Either
A. Make sure you go down the A350
B. Go via the road in the link. (zoom in for a better look) Zig Zag Hill.

The A350 isn't too badder road and quite a nice drive.
The route marked has hairpin bends and runs along the top of Cranbourne Chase(some biggish hills)
it looks a right laff. its hardly on the way from me to poole but if i have time, i will have a go on it.
