As some of you may have seen I was debating buying another mk1 MR2 the other week and today I made the long journey up to rainy Glasgow to collect it. Big thanks to Rickardo for taking me up there, you are a star.

Some of the pics from the seller are below and I will try and get some more up to date ones this week (if anyone is interested?)

The car desperately requires some new rear arches (sounds familiar) and a good wash and polish for a start.

Made it back without missing a beat but wasn't as quick as I expected. Mate came round for a look at it and told me the boost controller was set up wrong but I couldn't be arsed taking it back out to see how much difference it made. Done far to much travelling today.

Raining in Glasgow? lol

What's the plan Lee? Tidy up and have fun :)

Been hammering it down nearly all the way back but its confirmed its true that the T bar roof doesn't leak which is a miracle in itself.

Tidy the body up on the cheap and enjoy, don't want it to end up pampered like the Nova.

Your nova isn't pampered, lol

cool, I don't know much about the mr2 but I know a guy who's got one RR at 380 with a camery engine block? Aparently it's quite a rapid motor.

Just thought I'd update this a little.

Changed the seats and interior to black, much better I'm sure you'll agree.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/611810d9.jpg

Ran it at York Dragway and managed 13.4 1/4 mile at 100mph with 2.0 60ft. Decided to make it a bit better and try and get in the 12's.

Bought another car for a few parts and took the smaller 15" wheels and LSD box off it. (picture after I'd removed the wheels I wanted)

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/7decaf94.jpg

On my car and painted the roof black.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/b0c8a411.jpg

Then decided it was time to try and repair the rusty arches. Never tackled bodywork before so decided to have a crack. This is what I have managed so far.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/d8610184.jpg

Just need to order a new outer arch and fit it and then send to bodyshop for paint. Inner arch surprisingly good.

Thought it may interest a few Nova owners going though similar rust problems.

Comments/criticism welcome!

Drivers side isn't much better but going to try and leave that till winter as want it back on the road for summer.

It's running larger diameter vented disks with extended turbo calipers on the back, only just go under the 15's.

Awesome.

How does it handle with the 3SGTE engine in it? assuming thats what it has got?

Also what's the kerb weight like on one of these compared with a mk2 turbo?

If you got a rev1/2 turbo motor it should be good for 250/260 with boost hike and simple mods, if you have the rev3 motor (247ps standard) then it should do 280ish on basic mods... el rapido!

Handles ok with the 3SGTE, car is polybushed or rosejointed all round and has Koni adjustables on.

Not sure on weight, won't be light with T bar roof plus it has loads of coolant as radiator and chargecooler radiator are at the front and big water injection tank in the boot.

It's a Rev 2 running Rev 3 conversion and turbo, Apexi ECU, ST185 Wrc chargecooler, made 265bhp @0.9 bar so reckon ita around 285bhp @1.1 bar which I was running at York.

100mph which seems a little low. Don't think there is as much weight difference between mk1 and mk2 as you would think.

New arch repair panels have come and think I'm going to bottle it at this stage as I don't want to mess it up as they weren't cheap.

No pattern parts, checked everywhere. Toyota will only sell you a full rear quarter. Really strange as there are still a lot of these about, more than Nova's I think.

While I'm sunning it up in Turkey I decided to leave the car with a MR2 forum member to finish fixing the arches as I'd have only messed it up. Decided to repair both sides in the end and the price was very reasonable compared to some bodyshop quotes. Not expecting it to be perfect for the money but looks good from the pics so far.

Had the car back a week and have managed to blow it up. Out on the tops last week and the boost hit 1.3 bar (only mapped to 1.1 bar) resulting in high knock readings and coolant boiling over. Obviously the weak rev 2 head gasket.

Stripped it down and found a split vacuum to the actuator which will have caused the high boost! Have decided to fit a rev 3 metal head gasket this time and cracked on removing the head.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/78908024.jpg

Also fitted a new water injection pump and now intake temps sit at around 28 degrees on boost which is great.

Had the car running 1.1 bar and went to York first weekend after fixing it. Managed one run of 13.6 @ 105mph but a poor 60 ft so think there is a definite improvement on my pb of 13.4 @ 100 in there. Sadly the day got called off due to an accident so didn't manage any more runs.

Car is currently doing the 50 mile daily commute and doing fine although its costing me £15 a day in fuel!!

Picked this up for it tonight as intend taking it on track soon and it is a little flimsy being a T bar. Safety Devices 7 point cage for a bargain price of £250 given the rarity and the £800 new price tag. Fitting this weekend.

Nice new time mate, see you thought my time/speed was off, but that shows not so, as you got near as dam the same mine was 13.5 @ 105 (not that Ive been and tried to do better)

Cage is a nice result, sod paying £800 lol

Ive been looking at the mk2's (as in on the road/car's parked up) and thinking how nice they look, seen a mint low miles one thats always at the same place, belongs to a middle aged women, keep thinking of seeing if she might wish to sell any time soon, could sell the track car to buy one, as I'm sure in the long run there going to be a much more collectible classic then a nova! lol

Took it to York drag racing again but it was a damp day, managed a 13.6 @ 105mph with a crap 2.2 60ft time so with more grip I should have beaten my previous best. Kept going a bit sideways off the line and then fishtailing a bit in 2nd gear so had to lift slightly. Managed to come 3rd in my class though and didn't lose a head to head all day.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/f73a2625.jpg

Developed a misfire on the last run on high boost but luckily managed to make it home. Seems to have fixed itself as well.

Decided I'm going for more power though so took the tank off to fit a Walbro 255 pump. Not a nice job on your own.

Did my first trackday at Anglesey last weekend and car performed well, no issues at all. Did make me realise that trackday a aren't really my thing though, found it a little boring to be honest so going to stick to drag racing.

With that thought in mind I realised I need a bit more power so bought a rev 3 engine which has a better head and cams so will allow more power and then today bought a GT3071R with Tial external wastegate.

Going to fit forged pistons, ARP's, 850cc injectors and a decent clutch and go for 350-400bhp. Should be plenty in something this old and flimsy feeling.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/eb1cc663.jpg

Went a mocked the turbo up on my engine and I'm going to have to reposition the wastegate as the mk2 it came off has a much bigger engine bay. Ah well, didn't expect it to be easy!

They are pocketed but not forged. They are the weak link in these engines as the ringlands tend to collapse when running 350ish bhp.

Stripped the Rev 3 engine a couple of weekends ago and was a little disappointed to find a score down one of the bores. Can feel it with my nail but not sure if it warrants a rebore or not. Picture below.

Also the bores are a funny colour in places.

Then moved on to looking at the crank and big ends. Crank looks ok but the big ends have some really funny marks on the upper bearing of each rod. Have since been advised this is normal.

That's what a couple of engine builders have told me. Have dropped the crank off with someone today to measure and see if everything is in tolerance. Also had the block measured and doesn't need a rebore so I can carry on running 86mm pistons which is a relief. Now to decide between Wiseco, CP or JE variety!

Lee H

Update finally.

Done a bit of measuring and found out the turbo is actually a GT3076 rather than a GT3071. Going to fit it and have a little more power.

Picked up my engine block from being decked and honed and also the crank has been polished. Piston rings have been gapped and now just waiting for ARP rod bolts, mains, head studs to begin assembly.

Block will be getting a lick of paint tomorrow as it looks dreadful.

Yeah I know Paul was into his mountain bikes, still says he would like to buy this back one day. Wish he would as it's turning into a money pit.

Painted engine block and refitted oil sprayers.

Then decided to fit the front half of the roll cage as its been sat around in the way. Just left the bar out that runs from the back to the passenger footwell as that would be overkill. Can still just about remove the T bar roof as well.

Unsure whether to also pad the A pillar bars.

Finally done the engine swap. Currently running it in on the stock turbo and stock ecu. Had a huge problem with coolant leaks from all the pipes over the gearbox but think I've finally got it under control. Engine sounds well and very quiet. Not so keen on the clutch though, very on and off and quite juddery if you don't get it quite right.

Some pics.
