Right, I have bought a 1996 940 estate from RR forum so i can convert my 360 by using it's 2.3i turbo motor. The plan is fit a universal FMIC or maybe a Frontera one, change the timing belt and waterpump as well as swap over the sump, oil pump and a few bits from my 2.0 carb engine, up the boost a bit and hopefully run a reliable 200bhp which should make things interesting.

The plan is to have it completed within 3 weeks. As from the 23rd I have two weeks off work, and this is my daily (and only) car. lol This week is for stripping the 940.

I collected the donor from Nottingham yesterday and trailored it home. Big thanks to Mark for accompanying me and all of the subsequent help yesterday and today. 8) Also cheers to Conor for all of the help ferrying the cars about etc and letting me use your garage (even more) dude. :)

After some car shuffling the 940 was in my garage at home, my mates mk1 XR2 on a trailor to head south and for now my Primera project has been rehoused...
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/P11/DSC00003-2.jpg
In my mates rented garage which is now Fiesta free.
Looking VERY sorry for itself! (part of the reason is to detract attention away from the people who were asking what was happing with the car/nice wheels etc. Make it look like scrap FTW)

Hopefully when it returns I will be cracking on with it. Not happy with rear turret/tub design tbh, hence not touching it in forever! So that will be changed.

The engine is sweet as a nut for having covered 200K miles. Very pleased with it.

Let the 'deconstruction' commence!

Until tomorrow...

Mark and I made awesome progress on it today. Having ID'd every wire inside the car bar what runs to the back (too much **** in boot to access) although we know it's rear wiper/heated screen/ABS sensors/fuel pump etc so it's all good. We started on the engine bay too. More progress to be made there tomorrow. I am doing it as Ron suggested, keep it running and unplug things. This method has already helped out with the immobilser pick up ring on the barrel and one of the alarm control boxes/ECU's.

The doors aren't fitted very well mind! Or maybe Mark is heavy handed? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTGLkxb5O0c)

Atchoo :) Bout time this got a transplant! :d Poor neglected Primera though.

18-07-10, 07:22 PM
:d Turbo time FTW.

Yeah the Primera... lol

It will be back in 3 weeks or so though. I wanna remake the strut towers and do something better with the tubs. :)

It's fun making the Volvo sneeze with the airbox unclipped. I will no doubt have to run a cone anyway due to space so it will probably do that in the 360 without prompting. lol

I'm looking forward to getting on with this. I've always wanted to do a conversion like this on one of my own cars. No farting about, just engine out/engine in.

I want to rebuild the rear brakes, swap the front stuts for lower ones I made, replace the rear leaves or double up and get my new Superlites painted/on too. Chop chop. lol

Cool as funk. Does it drop straight in?

L14MNP
18-07-10, 07:41 PM
Cheers matey, Not straight in, but close. Need to fab up the RHS engine mount. Swap the sump/water pump and oil pump and change over the flywheel to the one from my 360 and a few other little things. So not bad all in.

It would be much easier if I was starting with an injected 360 as opposed to carbed but it's not the end of the world. :)

With my gearbox being at the rear all that is required is mating up the bellhousing to the 940 block (straight fit) it may require a little trimming, depends if my flywheel is suitable or if I need to source another, definitley no biggy though!

I chose this variant of the 2.3 turbo because it has the greatest scope for handling large power as it has 13mm con rods and oil squirters as standard. I don't intend to go crazy, but it's nice to know I'm starting with the correct block.

B230FT goodness, woohoo. Keeping it on standard boost once it's in?

Someone somewhere is enjoying my headlights and grille :( Who'd have thought leaving parts in a layby could be so unreliable.

19-07-10, 03:15 PM
Cheers all. :thumb:

Will get a bit more done after tea. I've just got up. :( Nights FTL.

Yeah Iain, who'd have known that placing objects behind a bin up a grassy embankment in a fairly quiet layby and away from passing eyes would result in them disappearing. Gun City surely is a rough place! lol

if you had a better phone and had received my many texts and attempted phone calls then you would have them on your motor now. You fail sir. :) I have the mirrors removed for you, unless I decide to smash them as you angered me on Saturday with your no-show. lol

Lol at both Lemonel and Lewi not reading the thread, boost will be upped so its running about 200bhp, and he will probably be running a cone filter so it will emphasise the wastegate and go whoosh when he lets off/changes gear :p

Thanks dude. :thumb: The Renault engines drop straight into 340's as they're French power as standard. lol Mine has a Volvo engine so this motor is a very close fit.

The Clio 16v/Williams/172 etc/R5 GTT converted 340's don't hang about though!

Cheers Kev. Yeah I've seen that nutter before. Looks like fun!

lol Lewi, you love ASw valves on turbo's don't you! I'll pass on the regards to the P11 shell. lol :thumb:

You tell em Spud. lol Plans (power) may change, but I'd like 200bhp. Probably won't happen straight away, but I'm happy with that. I am cracking on mate. Sacrificing sleep too. I normaly get an hour in before I leave for night shift, but fcuk it. lol

Iain READ WHAT I WRITE :@ You probably won't receive my text so I will put it on here lol. You can have the top mounts but I will probs need yours as I need it A-frame/solidbar-able for when I get shot.

Had a couple hours on this tonight. Got more of the loom worked out.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00007.jpg
It has THREE ECU's and won't run without all of them connected. That's surprising as I assumed one would be for ABS, but it seems not. Plus it has an alarm/immob so who knows what's going on. They will have to stay!
Also removed/unplugged a few more unrequired things inside and detangled what felt like the mystery of the universe expressed in a Volvo wiring loom running over and around a steering column. lol

Then Mark rocked up and we had a look at the business end of things. Cherrs dude.
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00011.jpg
O/S engine bay loom with unrequired plugs cut back (will be removed when I sort through it all) and pulled through bulkhead and ran outside the car so I know where I'm at.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00010.jpg
N/S with a few things removed and liberated from the plethora of restraining cable ties that are everywhere!. (Packed in at this stage.)

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00008.jpg
Anyone for spaghetti?

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00015.jpg
What's been removed so far.

It's looking pretty good ATM. Just the majority of the N/S engine loom to sort where it runs down the inner wing. Then it will be about time to cut out the unrequired stuff and trim the loom down - there's a lot to come out! :]

Wotrth asking here too I guess. Does anyone know if the Jetronic ECU's earth through the case/bracket? As at one stage it wouldn't fire up until I slid the ECU back into the bracket on the body. Then after that it was fine just hanging loose though. :/ lol

Same as mine then dude, 360>340. l0l

Any ideas what donor he used? Fcuk the blown Clio motor. Red block tried and tested is the way (for ease and less headaches) IMO.

Cooper, you can't knock the old turbo bricks if you can find one cheap enough. I'm not surprised it made the 'ring and back no sweat :) Looks a right laugh, loving the Dynarod rims lol. Can't see the vid atm. Think it's my browser being a dick. I only gave £150 for the 1996 940 I have used, all it needed was a screen and a back box for MOT. Stripping it is more fun though. lol

I had another hour on this tonight. I would like to have done more, but I cannot access the loom running to the fuel pump etc atm as the back is full of scrap, and to empty it would ideally require moving the car outside, but it's raining. So, tomorrow it shall have to be (rain or not).

Once I have what I need from the rear of the loom it will be time to start chasing out needless stuff and binning it to simplify the looms. :)

I dragged the loom through the N/S of the bulkhead which controls two of the ECU's from under the steering column and the side repeaters and dorr pins (not needed). One ECU has to be for the ABS as the loom branches off to the ABS pump, but like I said it wouldn't run without it yesterday. I'll get it.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00006.jpg

Much easier.
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00009.jpg
Liberated. It looks a lot simpler inside now. Although TBH wiring doesn't phase me, not since extending/hiding/slimming down the many complicated looms for my Primera.
I'm still not saying I fully understand it though! lol

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00017.jpg
These threee earths are required, That (unplugged) resistor box thing isn't, but two others from the same area are. (Not in pic as they were plugged in on the loom heaped in a plie lol)

Here's a couple of gayass short vids to prove it still runs. lol
I appear to have failed in showing how silent the engine is, no rattles, smoke etc. Yet my phone had made it sound like the cam is loose and I am revving the thing to like 6K

I know i know, i do love abit of the old 300 volvos ;)
and no idea what the doner was, he might of even turbo'd a 2.3 of some kind, as he is good at that kind of stuff. i know he had the 2.0 gls or something to begin with
I know he had problems with it hence reason taking the engine out think it was overheating but when it was in the car it ran pretty well and used to slide...........alot lol, but i will chat to him and ask him a few questions and hopefully get some piccys as it looks pretty smart aswell

LOL Connor you probably know more about them than me mate (not hard though! l0l)

Nice to hear the back end liked to party :d That's my main reason for doing this. I want to get into the drift day scene etc. Cheap n cheerful fun!

Any info you can get for me would be awesome dude. Would be nice to see some pics too (damn, this thing has really got under my skin - it's still ugly though!). :thumb:

I spent another couple hours on this tonight, sorting out more wiring BS.

Excuse the post which I have copied from the pipe n slippers ofrum. Don't worry about my Q's. l0l

Starting with a look at the relays.
I found some information and diagrams relating to the relay locations on SwedishBricks forum earlier, although my setup is still different. lol
http://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/relay.jpghttp://www.swedishbricks.net/700900FAQ/relay3.jpg

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00024.jpg
As standard.
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00022.jpg
Simplified somewhat. Excuse the blurry pics, dunno why this one is diplaying so large!

As can be seen, only one relay is required for the engine to run. I assume I'm right in marking this as controlling the fuel injection. The car dies as soon as it removes, and obviosuly won't fire up without it.

Going from the above diagram I am thinking the relays are layed out like:

Top row (left to right)
Bulb failure
Unused
Wipers?
Unsure

Middle row:
Fuel injection the only one required
Fogs?
Flasher?
Empty (no pins)
Unused

Bottom row:
EW?
CL?
Unsure
Aux lights
Rear fog

Who knows though. Can anyone confirm this and explain the others?

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00025.jpg
Here's a close up of the ones removed if it will help ID them.

I then started chasing back and stripping out unrequired parts of the loom. SRS, seatbelt pretensioners, radio, seat heat, N/S/F door, spare plugs etc.
I am only working on one side of the loom atm and some of them loop to the other side so the rest will be removed when I get to that side.
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00028.jpg
Tonights removal. it doesn't look much in that image but there is a fair bit there, nothing compared to what is still to come out though. :)

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00027.jpg
Much less cluttered FTW.

As can be seen above, there is an ECU in my rubbish pile now (Bosch 0227 400 219). This is for the ABS. I have no idea why it didn't want to run the other day with it unplugged though lol. I can 100% confirm it is not needed though.
I should have trusted my judgement when working out which one it is. Failing that, it says something like Made in USA on it, as does the ABS pump.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00029.jpg
Another massive plug and bunch of wires soon for the chop (ABS)

The wiring removed so far is surprisingly heavy (only because I never realised how much there was lol)
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00030.jpg

I had a head scratching moment earlier too. I was 100% confident of the items I was removing, so took a good few out and then tried to start the car - nothing!
The transponder chip pick up on the barrel had came unplugged lol. Happy days.

Shame I only had a couple hours for it, but it's the weekend soon and then two weeks holidays. :)

You cursed me! lol

Problems!

I cut out the ABS from the loom and some other random crap, front wiper motor, door pins and one I had marked spare.

Now it won't start! This pisses me off cos I thought I was being careful with what I cut out. I'm assuming I've cut through a shared circuit somewhere? :/

I made sure it ran with the ABS ECU unplugged, it did. It ran with the ABS plug cut off, so there's no continuity required via the plug.

The other stuff I cut out was trivial. I went to fire it up and it wouldn't go. Just the starter spins. Ride_on, are you 100% that the immobilser just stops the starter circuit? Cos it means I can rule out any potential issues there.

My mate came over and we checked through the loom. The annoying thing is it isn't just a case of rejoining what I had cut. As I expected/thought. A few of the wires are nowhere to be seen :/ Yet the were all cut out from the same place. I have what was the dash loom draped over the inner wing and wa sstanding outside the car. So just working in a specific area.

As seen below.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00031.jpg

Also, this resistor was extremely hot, and it appears that some of the coil wires run to it. (blue) I know it's on a heatsink, but it was burning hot after onlya shorthwile. Could be part of it? What does it control, more to do with the injectors? It lives on the N/S inner wing.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00033.jpg

What colour are the coli wires where they terminate? Just incase they change (unlikely I know) Also where do they terminate?
Same questions for fuel pump. I'm not sure if its priming ATM and still can't access the wiring in the rear.
Anything else that could disable it?

It is 100% not sparking or getting power to the coil though.

I have checked the other looms too. i haven't tampered with the rear loom where it branches off from the multiplugs. Also everything on the car side of the multi plugs is intact (or as much as it was before It stopped running)

The problem has to be in the part of the loom in the first pic. I am stumped as to where some of the wires have gone though! I simply cannot account for them!

Here's the current state of play.

Nice one Rob. That wasn't working for me yesterday!

BTW that thing above is the ignition amplifier.

Can anyone find out if he standard immobilser just kills the starter circuit? Like I say it spins on the starter still.

Andy, you knows it mate. Some mug told me this would be easy FFS. Plus the wires don't have dots on them to ID them like I'm used to. 3 blue with grey trace in one bunch and no way to tell them apart. Fail!

can you not just run a feed to the coil from the battery and see if it sparks. if that thing was roasting chances are possibly a non fused live is touching the earth.

I would be damm suprised if the standard volvo has just starter kill for the imobliser, most are the other way around so the fuel pump/spark is killed when the imobliser is active, otherwise, of course you could just bump it.

All those wires look fun though.

The wires are fun yes dude. lol

We're back on track. :)

The immobilser does just kill the starter circuit btw. gay or what!

Right, I got her running again tonight and a lot more progress, during a successful four hours work.

The coil being dead was subject to one of these wires! The culprits that hid from me yesterday!
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00036.jpg

I'm not sure which yet as I have just reconnected them all. They all run directly to the ECU (not the Jetronic iirc) so fcuk knows how I ended up chopping them!

I noticed it almost straight away today after I started bunching the loom back up into some sort of order, there they were!

So with it alive and kicking again, I binned loads more stuff from the N/S engine loom, some spare plugs, the ABS plug where it connects to the pump blah blah. On the O/S there was just one ABS sensor and what looked like some sort of loop in the wiring connected by a plug. When untaped etc this turned out to be already cut, from one of my earlier useless wiring removal excercises lol. As with everything else it was removed and cut right back to the engine bay side of the multiplugs.

The grommets where the loom runs through the bulkhead were a right PITA to remove, with the usual mank ancient insulation tape to remove and something new. It looks and feels (and sticks to hair skin) like bitumen :/ Lovely(!)

Need a better pic. I's really stringy and sticky lol

I binned loads from the main/dashloom too, I'm not sure what they were now as I worked out I didn't need them and cut the plugs off the other night. x2 door looms and radio/heater crap I think.

All of the unrequired wires I removed (O/S) from the main/dash loom ran to the coloure plugs that plug into the yellow junction. None go directly to the Jetronic ECU

The excess above is a combination of the main/dash loom and the loom running to the rear. Only 3 wires are needed from the rear one. (on two seperate plugs)

Here's how the fuse box is currently looking. I don't know if I have any before photos but it was a complete birds nest!
http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00063.jpg

Needless to say, the main/dash loom is now a skinny shadow of its former self. With zero unnecessary features.
it's very nearly running on just the bare bones now tbh, but I still want to pull a bit more out, stuff running to the ECU's that is now defunct etc.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00058.jpg
Rear loom for lights, wiper, HRW, fuel pump etc etc. All that is needed is the three wires running on their own (brown in pic isn't needed)

Here's a quick pic of how some of the plug connectors are looking. TBH more may have been removed since I took these. Never took many pics today.
Not in pics, but some plusg have been eliminated altogether. (The blocks joining engine - main/dash and rear to main/dash looms hold banks of four plugs as standard) There may be a pic earlier in the thread.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00059.jpg
The first of the two plugs that connect the rear loom to the main/dash loom down the N/S sill. Only the pink is needed lol.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00060.jpg
Second plug. Just the uncuts needed. (Except brown) Or is brown and white? They are the ones you can see running to the rear of the car in the 3rd pic.

We ended on a bit of a downer though! The car stopped working. The starter turns, the fuel pump primes, but it seems like the coil is dead. We were knackered by this point, so after trying a few things we knocked off for the night and I stuck the battery on charge. It was very flat and I was keep having to give it 5/10 mins fast charge and there's the possibility it doesn't have enough voltage to power the ECU's etc when turning the car over now. Mark mentioned earlier that with the engine running the battery was only reading 12v. So we are thinking we may have killed the charging circuit or upset the immobilser lol.
Luckily it's not a very complex system.

Most of the fuse box terminals were only reading 2 volts also after the above occured. So lack of power seems logical?

We don't think it is anything too serious. Fresh eyes/head in the morning will hopefully suss it out.

FYI, the immobilser DOES control more than just the starter motor. It kills either the fuel supply or power to the coil if you pull the wrong spades off the fuse box when running - it's possible thie has been done/maybe put back in wrong place and the car is immobilsed at the coil. Who knows. I'm tired lol.

If you read this Mark, thanks a lot once again dude. We really got a lot acheived today. Killer about the state we left it in, but who knows what a recharged battery and workforce can do tomorrow eh!

Tomorrow is scheduled for engine removal from the donor btw, so I really want it running again ASAP!

Thanks for reading, Liam.

^ Or not reading? lol

Todays progress...
Well after much probing with the multimeter this morning, we worked out that the signal wire to the injectors was dead. After even more searching and head scratching it was solved by Mark whilst I was in the house about to download some scanned Haynes pages provided by Iain. lol As well as Mark helping me today I also had Ronnie and Mick. Cheers once more guys. Uber appreciation!

As suspected, the problem lay in the fuse box. A single spade was on the wrong terminal, and that was enough to kill it dead. As mentioend previously, this had happened when we were removing excess from the fuse and relay boxes. A simple and easy mistake, but a one that makes you pay for it! lol

So with that sorted, we decided no more wires would be removed as today was marked as engien removal day and I had rounded up the troops. Even though a few more can be I reckon. I may or may not do this when it's in the 360 and running.
I took the brick for it's final journey. A 100 yard jaunt up the street lol. It's fun with no doors/bonnet/lights etc. Then we removed the looms for the last time.

Here's a few pics of the wiring required.

IMO it doesn't look like there is that much there in the grand scheme of things, but that is a 6 foot diameter table, and the medium sized black bag I used was binned and in total it filled a large rubble sack. We guesstimate about 10/15kgs was there.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00077.jpg

We put the doors back on, and filled it with all the crap that came out of it, interior plastics, bumpers etc etc. It's going to be weighed in tomorrow. Then I will have an empty garage once more.
I will also be sorting through the looms and soldering a few joints which are currently just twist 'n' tape dude to eliminating the wrong ones at various stages of working out the looms lol

Once again, thanks very much to Mark Ron and Mick. Another awesome and succesful day. Hacving all of you there today was ideal and as such I am bang on target for what I wanted to acheive over my holidays!

Week one saw the 940 purchased on Saturday and the work began on Sunday. it is finished exactly a week later and will be gone tomorrow.

Week two (1st of holidays) Remove B19 and fit B230FT into 360.

Week three (2nd and last of hols) use car/iron out any issues and hopefully have time to replace the rear leafs and front struts, recon my new Superlites and rebuild rear brakes.

lol. £80 for the shell (800kg) £20 for cat, £5 for the alloy bumper reinforcers
I think Filthy John's dad is having the 5 alloys for £40 too. So not a bad return on a £150 car when you consider I have kept the engine.
It still cost me £265 all in including fuel and trailor hire, but it's nice to get a bit back.

Pyro has a 60-2 LH2.4 flywheel too which I am purchasing, so it will very soon be all go. 340pw

I'm off down the garage shortly to solder and heatshrink the loom up, and (maybe) degrease the engine a bit.

That's about it. Tomorrow the flywheel should be here, and IIRC John says he has a new B200 water pump I can buy (which I need) so will fit that and swap the oil pick ups and sumps over (see what surprises awit me there!) I also need to order a round tooth timing belt.
I would have had the other engine mount off the B19 tonight, but the oil filter is in the way, so will have to wait until tomorrow.

Hi Liam nice progress, i should be able to help with a nice cooler for it for next to nowt drop me a pm

Got a nice volvo (Sierra rs500 style one) or a Saab straight outlet one. These are both skinny so you will have plenty of room to fit a rad in.

Transit connects run a small intercooler but they are chunky things and getting pipes to it will be a joke

He bought that one from a mate of his who half assed stripped it and couldn't/didn't know how to put it back together. So it had been sitting SORN for over 3 years. ATM it has just had the legal requirements to pass an MOT done. Read: LOTS of welding. lol He does have plans for a full resto at some stage though, plus it doesn't even get wet if helped at the minute so it should stay pretty solid until it makes it's way to the front of the project queue!

Good plan DC, but you're gonna need a 360 drivetrain or it will strip the splines off that prop and/or destroy the bellhousing/box in no time. lol

Yesterdays update:

Right, not as much acheived yesterday as hoped. However, still progress. This is gonna be a condensed update with bits missing no doubt, cos I CBA and need to go out shortly for more parts.

The B19 oil pick up was fitted to the B230 though, and the sump will be also (awaiting gasket, should be in today around 2pm) The dipstick tube also has to be swapped over.

The end crank bearings (IDK name) need to be removed and swapped over to match with the input shaft on the bell housing.

This was a bit of a fart on. The PCD on the fly is symmetrical so we were unsure on how to fit it. Some Googling from Conor and a phone home/parental walk through a 240 Haynes and we got there lol.

The O/S engine mount from the B19 fits. It clears the turbo oil feed and wastegate etc. The only thing in the way is the oil return.

you make it look easy.....

L14MNP
30-07-10, 11:10 AM
Well, some was easier than expected mate. Definitley not as straight forward as I was initially lead to believe though! Also get this, the guy on V3M who is also gonna do it at some point and who I agreed to share my findings with keeps coming out with a load of crap. Check the latest. lol

I haven't had a chance to compare the two yet mate. Will do that today.

First thoughts are maybe to bin the hard pipe for the feed/return (I forget which) in favour of a braided line, which should enable the 360 mount to be used and the oil filter returned to the B19 position.

Its the return. The pipe is only secured at the turbo and uses a rubberband type seal at the block, so it needs a rigid pipe. You may need to tap the block or something to secure a flexible line. I thought the Turbo was in the way, not just the oil feed return. Just checked it and the wastegate actuator is in the way. I measure 10" from the top of the head to the 360 engine mount top (excluding the stud sticking out, and raised sides). 10" on the 940 brings you half way down the wastegate control, but its hard to get the full 3D picture, you might be able to trim off some of the 360 Engine mount, and maybe add some strengthening, but it may still hit the wastegate arm or something. It all just looks too close, even if it did fit there may not be enough clearance to stop banging.

From what I see so far none of that will be an issue. I will find out today once it's dropped in the bay. (hope!)

Sloth
30-07-10, 11:18 AM

http://images43.fotki.com/v680/photos/9/1133479/8902618/IMG_0658-vi.jpg

As you can see in that pic, it's fitted. Unless the mount is gonna compress when it has the weight of the engine then I can't see it touching the wastegate or anything else TBH. I haven't measured the clearance but it was enough not to break out the tape measure, or even ponder it until now. lol

http://images27.fotki.com/v990/photos/9/1133479/8902618/IMG_0699-vi.jpg
Two dipsticks lol. The reason for this is that the B230 one won't reach the B19 sump and the B19 dipstick tube enters via the sump, not the block like the B230. So the B230 is there purely to plug the hole.

B19 (/B200?) clutch on LH2.4 flywheel.

The bellhousing needs a section removed from it to clear the B230 crank position sensor. As can be seen, on my car the B19 CPS is bolted to the bell housing, whereas on the B230 it is bolted to the block.

It seems as though the turbo housing is going to hit the engine mounting bracket when the engine rocks, but I think I will remove it and grind the lip away and see how it is then. If it's still crap I will cut a section out and triangulate it to regain the original strength.

As can be seen, a large section has been cut away to enable it to fit back in position and clear the distributor. I couldn't even force it in without chopping a section away.

Also had to chop the right angle from the bottom of the outlet thing on the heater box to clear the heater matrix pipework.

360 loom (headlights etc) removed from chassis leg, will need running down inner wing to keep away from turbo heat. Headlight wiper plug won't reach anymore but that doesn't bother me as I don't run them.

The alternator wiring is also going to have to be extended due to the alternator now being located on the opposite side to standard. Once I have it running I will shortern/hide the loom as best I can.

The coil is quite happy mounted on the bulkhead, and I bolted the boost sensor? pipes T off to the turbo and inlet) to the N/S chassis leg courtesy of the B19 airbox bracket.

Bottom rad hose has been chopped about but is going to have to shortened and rejoined on the straight section to avoid the kink it currently has when fitted.

Tomorrow, fuel pump (GLT job courtesy of FJ. Thanks mate!) to be mounted and fuel pipe bought and fitted. I hope to take a look at the downpipe situtation also and will begin transplanting the 940 wiring into the car. Also, the B19 accelerator cable will not fit the B230. I guess I will have to drill a hole and notch out the wheel on the TB or get an injection cable?

Aye Danny, there's been a few mate. A few more to come too!

lol Cheers Southie, reckon he can give me another 24 hrs?

Problems once more!

Last night was the first time we tried to fire it up. The coil was dead. It was late by then so it was left as is.

This morning I removed the looms (except engine loom) and checked through them for breaks/twist n tape joints I may have missed that could be causing poor conenctivity. Mick turned up at this point and we checked the looms for continuity blah blah and all was well. I then reinstalled them in the car and the ******* had 12v at the coil! :/

There are no noticeable issues with the loom, but the coil is sparkign very erratically IMO. See vid. http://s895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/Vids/?action=view&current=MOV00049.mp4
Am I right in thinking that it should just spark constantly? As it seems to just do what it wants. :/

Now, when it is sparking the car does try and fire on occasion, but the most I get is a couple of backfires and popping from the inlet side. Usuually it does SFA!

I think the injectors may also be in the wrong order, as they weren't lbled up when removed! Am I right in thinking that if they are trying to fire in the wrong order then it won't want to start at all?
I am unsure how to find out which order the injector plugs should be in on the loom too. :/ It has two longer wires and two shorter ones. Short ones for numbers 2 and 3 perchance?

There is also the slim, VERY slim possibility that the flywheel is on in the wrong orientation, which would explain a lot of the above I guess.

Does anyone know if it's fine to feed 12v directly to the coil, and what I kind of firing order I should expect from it as a result?

This normally wouldn't be such a major head fcuk, but I'm aware the clock is ticking!

Sloth
04-08-10, 03:24 PM
try yer crank sensor, and if its bosch L2.4 they fire batch injectors mate, so dont worry bout where they go. also lob some easy start down her and see whats what, it may catch off that...

L14MNP
04-08-10, 03:36 PM
I don't have any easy start atm. The carbed engine ate it all lol. Good idea though.

Yeah It is Lh2.4 dude, I thought they fired in batches of 2 but still wasn't sure if they need to be in the correct order.

I will look at the crank sensor, but the thing is that wouldn't stop 12v coming to the coil. That's almost the weirdest thing IMO.

What do you make of the way/rate it's firing in the vid?

Sloth
04-08-10, 03:47 PM

It's sparking when it wants mate. When the key is first turned you get 3/4 sparks at the same rate then it stops then a couple more then an even bigger gap and 1/2 more. Nothing uniform if you get me. Surely that's not right.

If only mate! I should be, but it's being a **** at one of the simplest stages. The wiring. Seriously all it needs is 3 chassis grounds and a permanent live to the fuse box. Everything else should be taken care of by the sensors and ECU's.
but.. (copied from volvo forum).

A full nights worth of fruitless multimetering has lead us to the stage where there is 12v present at the coil wiring conenctions (blue +ve & red/white -ve) but only on permanent live (ignition switched off) and position 1 on the ignition switch. There is no voltage present at position 2 and 3 (cranking).

We have been using the meter and also a bulb to test this. It's strange as hell the way the voltage drops to zero as soon as anything is connected. The bulb worked a couple of times, and then the wiring wouldn't even hold enough voltage to power that.

The looms are in good order and showing continuity as they should.

Three questions I guess... 1) Where does the red/white -ve coil wire terminate inside of the car? This has been cut from the main/dash loom as it was clearly running without it in the 940, so shouldn't be needed, but who knows now. :/

2) Is it normal for the voltage to drop if there is no attempt made to fire the engine? We are guessing it's the spar enhancer/amplifier discharging the coil. Is this right?

3) If the flywheel was fitted wrongly, would that explain the crazy timing of the firing from the coil? Or (hoping) would it always fire the same at the coil, and only when the rotor arm rotates would the incorrect timing come into effect? Or not :/ (http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/EngineMechanical.html#FlywheelPositiononReinstalla tion)

Also, 12v direct to the coil from the battery did not yield any firing, which I assumed it would. We tried two coils and same deal with both. Would a direct, permanent power supply work though? Because then the spark enhancer/amplifier is not part of the equation.

This is not a complicated system, I cannot believe what has happened at this stage of the build. :[

Does anyone have any ideas why it would be losing voltage as soon as anythign is connected to the offending terminals? I had more questions too but I've forgotten them ffs.
I'm off to plough through some wiring crap I've downloaded

brainsnova

im not sure if its possible but the permanent live might go through a relay and when a wire is wrongly connected it cuts the power. or there is no earth for the other positions. i may be talking **** lol

L14MNP
05-08-10, 12:30 AM
I think it could be the earth mate. I've just had a reply to a post I made on turbobricks and apparently the red/white (-ve) from the coil is grounded at the ignition ECU.

It's been cut from my main/dash loom, but only because the ******* still ran with it missing :/ Reinstating it to get it running would be ****ed up as like I say, it was running/driving right up until the end.

Here's where I'm at now. (copied)

Right, after checking through the 740/940 No-start guide with the meter on various settings it's looking for all the world like the
EZK module/powe stage/spark enhancer/ignition amplifier/ignition module/igniter etc etc ( care to add any more? lol) is at fault. All of my mates who have helped me agree, as does a local auto electrician (mate asked his neighbour).
I guess 200K miles worth of usage and then all of the stop/starting I have been asking of it whilst removing most of the 940 loom has been too much for it.

I have ordered a replacement and I should have it tomorrow morning if someone is able to take me lol.

The power to the coil is received via this module. As the name suggests, it amplifies the signal. So a one on the way out/dead would result in a very weak spark or none at all.

I had Iainel pull the king lead form his B230FK 940 and turn it over, and he gets an almost constant and healthy spark. See vid below:
http://s895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/Vids/?action=view&current=Spark.mp4
Compare that to mine:
http://s895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/Vids/?action=view&current=MOV00049.mp4

With the module unplugged neither my nor Iains cars will spark.
The culprit can only be that, surely!

Also, what is the purpose of this relay? (passenger side inner wing near ballast resistor and EZ module on 940) It only seems to be energising/returning on occasion. Not all of the time when igntion is activaed as I would expect.

I am so sick of being stuck at this simple stage!

£50 down the drain, it aint the power stage dealy.

http://i895.photobucket.com/albums/ac157/itsallac0nspiracy/Dusty%20Drifter/B230FT%20conversion/DSC00055.jpg
Old and new.

I dunno, maybe it's the coil itself. I have never tested it except to see if it was receiving 12v and was sparking, which it is put as previously shown it is crap.

So I have whipped it off and measured the resistance, multimeter set to ohms obviously. Here's the findings:

Between +ve and -ve terminals returns a reading of 00.0-00.01 when apparently it should be between 0.75-0.81

HT connection to either side terminal returns 07.3 ohms not the 10,000-11,000 a healthy coil should produce. Surely that is well knackered??

The above suggested 'OK' figures coem from a universal guide. For the Bosch Volvo coil it is supposed to produce 0.6-0.9 ohms and 5.0-7.0k ohms, although it says for part number ending in -005.
My label has worn away, but stamped on the bottom (what I assume is the part number) it says 0221 116 351. Google doesn't have anything definitive on this number belonging to a coil.

Can anyone measure their coil resistance for me (Ride_on) ?

Cheers.

A further thought. During testing of the coil +ve and -ve supply wires we connected a 5w interior light straight to the wire terminals and it didn't flash as I would have expected it to when at pos 3 (cranking) but I just thought, a bulb wouldn't be able to react as fast as the coil can fire so would stay lit up steady.

I'm feeling fairly optomisitc about this now.

L14MNP

Deadline met. Well 97% lol. My coil was fine. Stupid cheapass POS multimeter!

...sort of lol
But we got there in the end. Click FTW. (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/?action=view&current=MVI_0766.mp4)

(Feel free to admire the lovely site opposite the garage that is vacant death row. Scheduled for demolition any time now... :/)

Mick came over on Saturday so I could collect the coil I had ordered, but we retested mine and it's fine. So we never bothered with that (sorry Euro car parts LOL).
he came, head armed with information after reading up on crank position sensors the previous night after I flaked out of our MSN convo and went to sleep! We tested the AC current and resistance in the CPS. Both were fine, We then tested the B19 CPS against a drill chuck, and the meter showed that one was functioning. So we removed the B230 CPS from the bracket on the block and tested it. That was working also.

Then came the 50% eureka 50% FFS moment. When remounting the CPS on the B230 Mick noticed the bracket was only on finger tight!
That was nipped up and we had the correct spark rate back! Then the king lead was re-attached to the dizzy and she fired straight up!

So we got to finishing the car off. Mark came over and wrapped the looms in loom tape/we routed into cabin, mounted the EZK, injector resistors etc. And a couple of other bits and pieces too.

Mick then finished off the downpipe for me whilst I just held it in place lol. I really CBA with it on Saturday. It had me burned out.

Big thanks to Mick for solving my woes! i cannot believe I never checked that!

So I pulled the car outside, and the new problems began lol. (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/?action=view&current=MVI_0767.mp4)
This is a weird one. It got to the point where the car wouldn't idle or then even fire up. More fuel was added, then the clocks were connected. Showing half a tank, so no issues there.
Spluttering aside, I do like that noise!

I removed the feed pipe from the rail and this is the pitiful amount that was coming through (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/?action=view&current=MVI_0771.mp4)
Please excuse our funny northern accents and easily pleased sense of humour. lol

We wrapped in at this point.

This afternoon I removed the pump from the car and bench tested it. First time is as it was last night (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/?action=view&current=MOV00056.mp4)
Second time, as it should be (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/?action=view&current=MOV00057.mp4)

I then plugged it back into the cars loom and bypassed the tank using the jerry can/jug. Still wouldn't start, just as it was when we left it last night.
I quit then lol. My mate suggested something I forgot to do when he rang me. Connect the pump directly to the battery, bypassing the cars loom. Incase it is doing what we think it may be, priming initially and then cutting out. I will do that tomorrow.

I also have ordered a pump that flows 200LPH so I am within spec. The GLT one should be fine for testing purposes on the car though at 120LPH. The missing 60 litres won't come into play at low revs. As my mate says, it's not like the injectors are operating at 70% at 3K RPM lol.

We also noticed a high pressure oil leak when the car was moved outside yesterday. I knew it was leaking, but wasn't aware how bad due to not running the engine. After a poke about today, my worst fears are realised. it appears to be the turbo's oil return pipe. not where it has been modified, but at the two bolt flange end where it bolts to the turbo. The gasket was reused (I meant to replace but overlooked it.) and you guessed it, it's a total PITA to access in situ.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00060.jpg
Nope, can't I get it from here!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00059.jpg
How about here? :/

I can't even get a 1/4 drive 10mm or stubby spanner in there, let alone my hand! Looks like it's an engine mount off job. Another bitch of a task, and I am unsure how possible tbh! Guess I will find out tomorrow lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00061.jpg
Random assortment of boost pipes I got from the scrappers today. Cheers Mark.

So, those minor problems aside. I have acheived my target lol. Albeit I now have a car I can't use for work for another few days!
Oh yeah, I still need to make my FMIC fit. Driving with the 940 one present certain bonnet closure issues.

If it wasn't for the wild goode chase that resulted from the loose CPS. I would have been on target, had shakedown time etc. I expected teething issues, only thing is I expected them 4/5 days back lol!

Cheers to Mick, Mark and Naylor for yesterday.
Especially Mick. You solved it mate, and at a time I couldn't even be arsed to pick up a spanner!

Sloff, I did check it to an extent anyway lol. The singular bolt holding the CPS to the bracket was tight, but I negated the two bolts from the bracket-block. lol

A bit more sorted this afternoon.

FJ dropped in after giving me a lift home today and Mick brought my compressor over, so we blasted out the fuel lines. (after testing the pump from the battery and direct to the fuel rail). We found the problem area. One side of the OEM GLT pump is a larger diameter, adn as such it had 10mm rubber hose, reducing to 8mm, this was more than likely drawing in air. A section of the plastic Volvo pipe was added to bef it up, and problem solved.

I haven't driven it anymore than in these two videos atm, due to the oil leak. Tomorrows job.

Thanks for all the replies and positive messages lads.

Here's a belated update lol

As previously mentioned, it was spraying oil out of the return for the turbo, so I whipped it off and replaced the gasket and O ring with OEM Volvo parts, expecting this to solve the issue.

The gasket isn't correct. Despite Volvo using the 940's chassis number to order it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00012.jpg

The DIY return
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00008.jpg
Here's the less than adequate space/view you have to work with if you don't remove the mount. I managed to remove the return, but fitting it again this way was impossible.

Despite the incorrect fitment, I stuck it on anyway. Removal/fitting required the radiator out, alternator off and O/S engine mount.
It seemed to have worked initially, no drips when running. It has now started dripping (Noticed on Saturday night. First offcial run out) although nowhere near the previous extent.

So there's still a few things to address. On Friday evening after a couple of hours on it I thought it was ready to go. So at about 3am my mate and I went to Tesco for oil, it was only on the return trip we noticed the lights dimming, wipers slowing etc. Luckily we made it home (15 miles or so on just the battery FTW). It was like Apollo 13  Blower off, engine fans off. Reduce the amperage for re-entry etc. /gay. LOL

Lesson learned there, multimeter the battery when the car is running. Had I done this initially I would have realised it wasn't charging. This was down to the wire to the dash light not being connected, which actually plugs into the voltage regulator on the alternator lol. I dodn't/didn't know much about alternators but we sorted that.

As can be seen, I have no FMIC atm. Just a cheeky scrapyard bypass until my eBay core arrives.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00021.jpg

I still have a few gauges to connect, exhaust brackets to make, the damn oil return again and the FMIC to sort and the water cooling to the turbo housing to reconnect. Did the flow hose come from the 940 header tank? Also I am still running a GLT injection pump. It doesn't seem to cut until fairly high up the rev range in 5th. So it's more than adequate to get someone going. I CBA to fit my uprated pump ATM as it needs a fancy connector.

Despite the superheated air and limited boost/power. It still pulls very well. I have whooped a couple of modern diesels, one an SRI Vectra a new Saab Turbo and was level pegging with some form of BMW X5. (before i slowed so I didn't lose the louvre lol) Mostly just to see where I'm at more than anything. It will be good to see what's to come when I have a FMIC and bleed valve with the engine running around 11 psi. :)

it's nice to have a working car again. Thanks to FJ, Gaz, Mark and Naylor for the recent help. Nearly there!

Hello mate, cheers. I was wondering who's the Vec was. It's smart. :thumb:

Here's an update lol (copied from turbobricks)

I replaced the gasket with one supplied by Volvo but this was incorrect. I fitted it at the time as I had nothing else.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00051.jpg
The OEM Volvo supplied gasket after removal. As can be seen it is completely wrong.

I ordered a TD04 gasket from eBay and fitted that.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00050.jpg
Better.

and it worked, for a few hours. The first sign something was up was when there was a lot of oily smoke coming from what seems to be below the turbo. No leaks on the ground at this point. I drove it home and when pulling in the garage I noticed the smoke escaping from the grille and bonnet shutline and even some coming into the cabin (I have no dash atm).

I then used the car for work a few hours later and it was still drip free, Come 10 hours later it was dripping down onto the oil filter housing onto the ground. I am not sure where it has originated from yet, as I had another problem!

The damn crank position sensor and part of the engine loom had been touching the EGR pipe and have melted :/

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00055.jpg
Shouldn't be too hard to repair. I should take this opportunity to shorten the loom also.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00056.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00057.jpg
The CPS. Only the outer sheath and the shielding have been damaged, the wires themselves are intact, Can it be repaired? I need to sort this one ASAP. Then I will order a new one from eBay.com. I guess I don't have a pic of it with the damaged area removed, but it is fine except for the outher sheath and a couple inches of the sheilding.

Back to the oil issue, it seems to have worsened tbh. After limping home the 5/6 miles from work it seems to have used about 0.5 litres (as in burned it off but not through the exhaust.)
It worsened to a point where it was coming in through the dash vents and pouring out of the grille after only being stopped for a few seconds.

I am wondering if the crappy DIY oil return is to blame. The original had to go due to engine mount conflict issues.

Here's what I have now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00002.jpg

I didn't think it was leaking from there as there is no evidence of it having ran down the silicone pipe and it has happily seated at both ends. Although i concede this is not an ideal soloution.

One last oil related thing, it also weeps from the filler cap on the cam cover. I changed the cap just incase it was to blame and it still does it.

Blocked breather perhaps?

Due to the wiring situation I can't even start the car up and check for the leak at the moment.

Any ideas? I really am scratching my head now. As well as being sick as fcuk!

Oh yeah, got the FMIC in, just awaiting boost pipes

Right. Found my pics.

I'll start with the oil return carry on! i think the last post I made about that was when I had fitted the (wrong) OEM gasket Volvo supplied me. I should have cut the Cornflakes box up in hindsight...

Needless to say, it failed after barely any time. So I ordered the correct TD04 gasket from eBay and fitted that. This time, the problem returned (har har) with a vengeance! Not before I acquired two further issues though lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00051-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00050-1.jpg

The car wouldn't start in the morning after work. I flattened the battery trying. It would almost fire and then give up. FJ came to my rescue and we got the car away on his battery (we still need to swap back lol).
When running, the car was raining oil from the subframe. Great(!). I limped home complete with lots of smoke. I mean it was billowing from the grille and coming in through the vents when I stopped. I was considering not driving it TBH.

The oil leak/smoke issue was discovered:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00070.jpg
When reassembling the car I had routed the silcone pipe in a difefrent way and it had moved and was sitting against the turbo!

Then it failed again! This time it came out of the sump. It needs threaded fittings to be fair. A trip to B&Q for some flexible copper tube and one Ronnie later and I have a (so far!)
reliable oil return. The Volvo O ring was blown out of the sump so it now has a Samco one. I am reluctant to fit the proper one as the bodge is quite happy atm! Plus they're over a fiver each and I'm on my second. lol

The non-start issue seemed to be down to this nice little mess:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00055-1.jpg
The crank position sensor and wiring loom had melted against the EGR pipe. I guess I never tied it back up when doing some previous work, plus I thought there's nothing hot down there anyway lol. I plan to shorten the loom at some point.

The loom was repaired, it was only 3 wires that had been damaged (stuck to each other). I also repaired the CPS, it was just the outer sheath and aluminium shielding that had bought it. So out with the tin foil and insulation tape. All seemed well...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00057-1.jpg

I also investigated why oil was being pushed past the oil filler cap. I replaced the cap with the one from the B19 and it was still the same, so I pulled off the breathers/PCV/oil trap and cleaned out/replaced them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00064-1.jpg
Nice.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00069-1.jpg
Replaced this.

That sorted the weird oil issue concerning the cap then.

At the same time I also binned the EGR.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00066-1.jpg

I am still unsure whether or not this has upset the car (current problems) but it ran fine for at least one day with it blanked off.

The FMIC was also fitted before all that ^ TBH.I wanted it in the grille space but wasn't sure how. Ronnies mounting ideas FTW.

Something wasn't quite right here, it didn't look like I imagined. Too much like mesh from a short distance too! lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/fmic.jpg
How it ended up, had to be lowered to allow the boost pipes and headlights to fit at the same time. lol it actually looks good the way it is now. A few people weren't sold on it at first but most seem to agree now.

plugs
leads
rotor arm
distributor cap

Check the old cap!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00090.jpg
Can you say worn?!

The problem still persisted, so other things were looked at/replaced:

Like I said, I initially thought it was running on 3 pots, but having tested it I now know all 4 are working fine. as well as testing for a strong spark and testing the coil, I have tested the TPS and the AMM (also cleaned the hotwires). All are well. The injectors seem fine, and no leaks from inlet or IC piping.

CPS (due to it previously melting on the EGR pipe. I repaired it but thought maybe it wasn't sufficient.) Also, 3 of the wires from the loom were damaged, but re-soldered. I'm not sure what they do as I never traced them back.)
EZK module/ignition amplifier (due to a previous need)
oxygen sensor, gen Bosch.
FPR

The replaced parts are between 50-800 miles old, so should be fine.

Still it persists! The timing marks line up too. I am awaiting a banjo fitting so i can install the uprated fuel pump, to at least rule out the GLT one not working correctly, although it sounds as it did before and it seems to flow just as much if you remove the feed from the rail. After that I guess it will be a compression check (even though it idles and drives ok on very partial throttle) Except for sometimes the revs hunting and climbing high when on idle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00111.jpg
I bought this Forge twin piston BOV nice and cheap. I would like to see if i can plumb it in so it recirculates. I do like that noise lol, plus I hear it aids throttle reponse, and dumping a little metred air can giev pops/bangs and the occasional flame. lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00112.jpg
The timing belt was sold to me as a sqaure tooth type. Fcuking eBay!

i think that's it!

lol @ turbo. I should have bought that one from Joe :P. I'm good for now though. it would be a 15g as first choice I reckon anyway mate. That's what the Turbopricks like to use. I have a nice guide here for rotating the housing etc.

I cured the problem yesterday, for all of 5 miles. I fitted the new pump and all was well, then the stutter returned, ending in the fuel hose splitting! :/ My mate rescued me with a stanley knife and screwdriver, I cut it short and reattached, made it home and got me some more hose.Fitted it up and it was OK - for about 30 seconds. Very odd. The 'miss' is still there but not as obvious/rough as before.

I'm 90% confident the problem lies with fuel delivery. The issue seems to be with the fuel hose itself. The stuff I have on ATM has like an insert inside of it which appears to be collapsing, or the outer just splits. You can actually tear the outer by hand! It's from eBay  it seemed fine when it arrived, but appears to go soft in very little time. I am going to pull it all out and replace it with decent stuff and then see where I am.

I'm also going to pull the loom off the engine and go right over it this week. I may shortern it at the same time.

Bah.

Forgot about this! lol (Thread not car :P)

Here's my latest crappy post copied from V3M if anyones boshed.

I decided I was sick of needing two barrels to operate the car.

The 360 one had already had it's electrics moved over to the 940 barrel, it just served as a steering lock.

I hacksawed/chiseled the OE barrel off the colum - fun. If I could have gotten a drill in I would drilled out the bolts. If I had no windows to protect I would have used a grinder. Hand tools it had to be lol.
Wit the intention (although I knew it wasn't very likely) of it looking quite similar to the 940 barrel when removed.

This was not the case lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00096-1.jpg

I had utilised a mk1 Fiesta steering boss I had lying around to allow me to fit the deep dish wheel I have, as it turns out me £3 Halford boss wasn't for a Pug 205 but we won't let that stop us lol. Plus, it looked the same as my mates, so that's my excuse. I never intended using it on this car, but then I never intended fitting a turbo motor or having quite as much fun as it can provide on occasion lol.

A trip to Ronnies was in order, and the OE wheel from my 360 was in for a shock.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00113.jpg

Thanks for the boss Mr OE wheel. You have been good to me - except for when I occasionaly catch the horn after straightening up after a skid. Infact. fcuk you lol.

My harsh words to the steering wheel must have hurt it's feelings, either that or Ronnies dog has been watching Firestarter. [insert shocked face emoticon here]
As whilst the boss was being turned down in Rons lathe the wheel suddenly became more interesting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00124.jpg

Cheers boys. :thumb:

I plan to refit the dash mate but as it's only got a month left before my legal requirements expire I thought I wouild just leave it for now lol. I do run clocks, they're just on the back seat in that pic I guess. lol

The problem I have atm is the man says it's still OK to use it, so I like to keep it in (kinda) one piece as I've been to a few retro shows/local 'classic' meets etc lately, so I like to keep it ready for action so to speak. I will turn my attention to the additional wiring/ECU's mounting etc very soon though.

As for the running issues, that's a strange one. Since plumbing in that OTT gauge it has shown what I suspected with regards to fuel pressure loss but since I moved the return into the tank the pressure drop only seems to show itself when the level in the tank drops to a quarter or below. So it's suddenly became more predictable and reliable, although if I gun it sometimes it will starve at WOT. I plan to fit an injection tank and swirl pot/filter affair over the winter so hopefully it will be solved.

Can't wait to get out and give it some 'lovin' and grab some vids. lol @ ghostriding. I think I'll pass - very thin roof skin you see mate! Shame the fkn council banned the drifting at Teeside Autodrome before I had a chance to play. :(

No probs, i always give credit where its due, and it certainly is on both of your projects, not because things are done to a decent standard, but the determination you have to get things done! I remeber when i used to get home from work everyday and get straigh under the Nova. Not so much now, the cars stay nackered!

As long as it doesnt owe you too much it would be worth keeping as al ong term project, IMO anyway. But it is nice to be debt free. Im trying to save up to buy my first property, purely so i can have a garage or big drive. So i can have projects just like yours :d. ^ lol. Ta mate. I am redoing some of my car now, as it was only thrown in to an extent. it had to be as I had a deadline etc.

First up are the looms, I have loads of duplicate and un-needed stuff that just clutter the place up ATM.

I spent half an hour removing the original 360 engine bay loom when I got in tonight. I'm going to remove things I don't want and re-terminate a lot of the old connections. Given that most stuff I require is now on the 940 engine loom I can lose quite a bit from this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00153.jpg

I like the way it unplugs from the fuse box. A nice bit of light re-wiring tomorrow if I CBA as I begin sorting out my cluttered bay.

Top tip kids: label everything. I always do and it works out so much easier IMO.

I don't mind wiring TBH. The worst part is 27 year old insulation tape!

The only vids I have are quick camera phone stuff in the wet/snow mate but trust me she can hold a slide :) There's nowhere around here to legally play plus I need a turbo clutch fitting (will do this winter) as if I give it death it will fade. it's fine for fast road/wet stuff but not what I am after. Once I sort the niggles I will be giving it death in 2011. :thumb: lol

Definitley get yourself something to fiddle with mate. I'd love a mk1 GTE but don't have the room!

I hate it when your fingers get all sticky.... (insert inuendo here!)

I always imagined they wouldnt be that bad to hold, as they are quite a nice wheel base, not too short or long, rather like an AE86. And you dont have the trouble of waiting for a turbo, although you will soon! Thats one of the troubles i had with drifing my Z32 TT, massive lag, and then massive power, but just too violent.

Yeh i'd like a GTE, ive had 4 or 5 mk2's, and only 1 mk1, but i have always prefered mk1's. Ideally id love an early mk1 SR, the original blokes hatch ;). Blydenstein head, a pair of 40 dells, sure, its no rocketship, but for me, its pure oldschool Nova perfection. But at the moment, i can only dream. I should of really bought Ades...

Sounds like your 300 was a bit more potent than mine lol (No surprise tbh) Was it LWB or SWB dude? I do love a nice one of those.

I don't plan to upgrade the turbo on mine at any time in the near future so it will remain as a lag free fun machine lol.

Nova's :( If it wasn't for the craic I wouldn't still be on here! There's so many nice ones about. I'm in the same boat as you. Not a realistic option atm!

I modified the engine bay loom tonight whilst watching the tele having removed the insulation tape whilst listening to the match. It took me the whole game. It's hard crap to get off, but we won so i didn't mind. lol

good work mate i had to do this on the s1 to remove all the mfi wiring to make it neater for when the efi wiring loom goes in are your fingers sticky as hell?

It's worth doing isn't it mate. Your S1 is gonna be stunning when it's all back together. I hate unused conectors etc that just complicate things and make it look a mess.

As for sticky fingers, yeah but not as much as a few months back

TBH the Volvo insulation tape wasn't so bad. Nissan stuff that's been baked on by an SR20DET is really horrible. The only Ford experience I have it has all been dried up and just flaked off. lol

Good job your doing there, still admirering your work :)

It was a bit of a monster in terms of power, but more how it was delivered. It was a LWB 2+2. Ive loved them since i was a kid, i seen one localy and decided one day i was going to have one!

Im sure the power should be more than enough to keep you happy for a while after what youve been used to in Lolvo. Ive always wondered how top drifters managed to have silly power SR20's, but still maintaining power that is usable. But then again, i suppose it depends on driving style, im no drifter by any stretch of the imagination, so i wouldnt be able to define what would be best.

Keep up the good work and inspiration! (I wanna S13 project now!)

Project mini-winter-resto continues. I spent a bit of time on the car down the garage this evening and this is where I am currently at.

At present I have a wire free bay. Which I like. I don't plan a wire tuck on this car, just what I like to think of as de-cluttering the bay, moving random earths/lives etc and combining the 360 and 940 looms where possible.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00186.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00187.jpg

Right, now that I have removed what I don't want from the 360's engine bay - fuse box loom. I am going to reroute it so less is on show.

Something like the pics below. This is the first time I have layed it in the engine bay since chopping it about, so a few sections are too long atm. Nothing taxing though.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00194.jpg
Along the leg, or much more likely, as in the pic below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00198.jpg
Headlight/sidelight/side repeater/horn and reloacted earth need to be extended. Will be pinned to inner wing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00196.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00195.jpg
12v +ve moved from battery to starter. Will obviously be shortened. Routed under heater box (clearly not fitted) and servo etc.

I have been working on the B230 looms also as there were things I wanted to move a couple of unused connections remaining, alternator charging circuit, bonnet pin and some other unused/unrequired stuff. The largest of these looms is now looking a lot better, it's amazing what just taking all of the plastic conduit off can do. As you may expect, these do need to be shortened due to them coming from the donor barge.

I also blanked off the carbon cannister connections at the throttle body with a couple of cut down bolts. I was running about 2 feet of looped hose, so that's more unrequired crap out of the way.

B19 bracketry
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00199.jpg
Depending on how easy they are to remove without spot weld drilling holes into the inner wings everywhere I may remove the old B19 airbox brackets and relocate the battery to the boot. Tidies things up and will give better weight distribution (every little helps!) I don't know at this stage though, as it may leave the bay looking unbalanced and then me relocating washer bottle and header tanks etc into the arches lol. CBA with that anymore.

And the worst part on the car
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00181.jpg
z0mg h0al!

This is a strange one, baring in mind that prior to the two years I have owned the car it had sat in some dead old mans garage for 15 years then the lovely bodge (see below) had held up well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00184.jpg
Yeah! Cake that filler on!

When I first got the car it looked like an innocent lump of chemical metal with no evidence of a hole beneath, it gradually fell off though. I don't think the hole has grown. lol

I don't mind. It' s nearly 27 years old, so is bound to have a few surprises for me.

Rgarding the fuse box, I think this will be going the journey in favour of a mini blade affair, and possibly reloacted to the other side of the bulkhead. It all depends how I feel when I get around to it.

/End transmission...

Psh! I have bigger holes in some of my socks lol. You know the pair you intend to through away but ussually work there way back into the drawer a couple of times first? Or is that just me?

I have decided I am not going to replace the fuse box with a moder aftermarket unit. I removed the OE unit the other night, and TBH it is a very good design. Fully sealed too, plus the bulkhead is recessed for it so it would just bring more unjustified work.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00202.jpg?t=1290169682
As you can see, it is minty fresh behind there, which was surprising, also now my rust hole is visible in it's full glory lol. The rest is just dirt. The top hole was made for the AFM etc B230 loom that connects to the B230 interior loom on the other side of the bulkhead. I would have prefered to bring it through the bulkhead in a less obvious place, but as it was built in 2 weeks it wasn't a major concern then.

I pulled another engine bay loom from one of FJ breakers the other day. Thanks again mate.

I done some mincing in the garage last night and stripped the donor loom of the sections I need to be able to extend my cars engine bay loom due to relocating it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00203.jpg?t=1290168905
One donor GLT birds nest
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00204.jpg?t=1290169049
Extentions for N/S & O/S headlight/sidelight/side repeater, washer pump, brake fluid level, horn, a couple of heavy earths. You get the picture.

I also attacked the B230 interior loom a bit more last night, removing some of the unrequired leftovers that I didn't want to touch once we had it running again after a little confusion (covered earlier in trhead) on the day of removal from the 940 lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00205.jpg?t=1290170216
OEM glass break sensor and 3 unused plugs. I forget their use but I had them marked up as unused (for my application) and they weren't connected to anything else major, so they went the journey.
I'm 95.1275893734% certain that it should still function when reconnected to the other looms. lol After that, when in a running car once more I will see if I can sack off the alarm control box and what not.

The interior loom now. Looking that little more simplified. Every little helps and all that.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00211.jpg?t=1290170780

and lastly
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00212.jpg?t=1290170843
No more rent in the window until next summer, so once this wiring crap is done the bigger work can commence.

P.S, anyone know where the +ve feed to the front fogs connects to the engine bay loom? I'm gueesing it terminates at one of the fuse box multi plugs. (Will check wiring schematics when I have time). I want to install them as part of my engien bay loom, as being a GLS they aren't fitted as standard, and the donor loom was vandalised by me before I remembered I wanted that section. lol

Here's a pointless update. I have to keep my legions of fans happy though(!)

More wiring done. I just need a bit more to extend my AFM and have to check the pin outs because I snipped a plug off (AFM) to untangle it and extend, and two of the wires are the same colour/gauge ffs!
Once I extend that and somehow rejoin the engine bay loom headlamp connections I'm all sorted.

Lots of things have been moved. I shall get pics when I next do something of note.

lol

Love the knives thing, incase you hadnt noticed! Just stood out to me, its really orginised though, its good, i wonder if seriel killers have the same setup!

They have leaves and a de-dion! That will be going in the bin if I still have this car come next winter though.

As for the wiring, There's barely anything left from how it came out of the donor so it's not so bad, although I still have four frigging looms I'm working on atm and I haven't even removed the cars interior loom (and don't plan to) lol

Yeah I thought you may like the knives somehow! I have all of my boxes/cases labelled up so I spend less time pissing about looking for stuff. It amazes me you can buy a case like that for a fiver though. You could jack someones kidneys with them! lol

I've been locked out of the garage since I snapped the key in the lock on Friday lol. Yesterday I attended to that, and as the roads were completely impassable (read: no sledging lol) I promptly set about some barely worthwhile mincing.

In the interest in tidying the bay, I removed the old B19 airbox bracket. I was using it for the boost sensor thing, injector resistor pack, EZK module and radio supression relay but these all have new homes now.

The offending article. Do all 360's have this, or just mk2's? I guess I'll stick it in the pile to accompany the B19 if it's needed.

Sorted
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00248.jpg
The block-chassis section is now nicely hidden beneath the engine mount.
I may replace this for newer stuff, but it will do for now. It's a bit hard to go the shop when the roads are closed lol.

I was running out of small jobs so I dug my old smashed headlight out of the cupboard.

as I always intended running one (before FMIC) for a few reasons, but I'm not ashamed to say the main one was looks. lol Since the front now looks pretty mean (for a V300) I have turned my attentions to the rear.

There's reasons other than weight saving for why I have removed the wheel well.

Following on from plans to make the car look a bit tougher and more purposeful I wanted to mount the cooler in the rear valance (thermo sandwich plate/lines will run to engine) and expose the running gear when viewed from behind. Due to the saddlebag type fuel tank being in front of the axle/over the gearbox this means that the diff/gbox are now visible without the spare wheel well in the way and my back box can be tucked much higher up. The valance has been cut level with the bottom of the bumper. This would be more noticeable in it's absence on another car, but mine was painted in black underseal instead of being body coloured.

Cooler cut into bumper and valance with (currently rusty oily bits visible) . Should look pretty trick with a couple of nice shiny elbow fittings lol

Still yet to decide on the oil cooler angle. It's cable tied up in those pics. It will get plenty of cool air there and as my mate suggested, fit a guard over the inside face to protect it and all should be well.

I don't know yet whether to rivet ali sheet in to replace the wheel well or just use steel.

My phone is crap at taking pics in anything other than perfect light. and it's too slippery to push the car outside. :/

Opinions? A lot of people don't care for the open grille or unorthadox FMIC placement so I can't see this being too pouplar with some. lol

Can't remember where I'm up to as I haven't done much what with it being Xmas and all.
I fitted the oil cooler properly the other day and not content with ruining the rear bumper I have been hacking my front bumper about too, lol

It used to look like this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/shrinkold.jpg
Note the blanked off grilles that cool the gearbox on autotragics. I cut the reinforcer out and opened them up. Can't hurt right? Looks a bit more agressive too IMO.

Leaving this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/shrinkold2.jpg

As the grille I made is open, just the frame TBH, and the oil cooler being cut into the rear bumper is of the same style I thought I would cut those grilles out completely. As well as the area behind the number plate. I had to grind the reinforcer in situ as removing it would mean destroying the bumper. It's a bit close for my liking in some places! lol

Check last years fail for the reason I couldn't have the usual big ass holes in the plate recess:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00309.jpg

Here is a less than flattering pic to show what it looks like now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00327.jpg
The flash is a harsh misstress lol. Where the rust can be seen inside the chassis rails is a bolt on part, so luckily I can remove that and paint it up all nice. lol
My radiator has seen better days so it will be replaced with an alloy one with a slim line electric fan, so that should look pretty cool from the bottom, I hope. lol I guarantee it will be better in every area than the current knackered P.O.S.
It needs a bit of tidying up, but I got cold so left it for tonight lol. There is only a couple more things to do to the front and I will be pretty happy.
You may have noticed this little fella in the above pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00331.jpg

Straight out the bumper for ultimate rare parts fcukability and hopefully making the car look a bit harder at the same time. lol
Many thanks to Ron for marking it out. I suck at that carry on.

Here's another idea I have been contemplating since last year:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/DSC00337.jpg
As in:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/ManorQuay/Volvo%20360/robs242.jpg

I would use V300 headlight bowls to give the depth I want, but it's hard to make it look like it should only have one single circular lamp without emphasising the fact the aperture is rectangular and not square if you get me.

Something worth mincing on with as a side project IMO, as early 242's look great. Really psycopathic lol. I'm not as bothered as I used to be though. I originally thought the front of the car (mine) looked a bit dopey and 'meh' from certain angles, but since I binned the hideous grille and added some depth it looks a lot better to me.

Fnally, a random 'just cos I like it' crappy pic. lol

The other side is simple, open bonnet and position jack, but the turbo and boost pipes are on the way on this side. I thought I had it on the bracket enough. Clearly not, as It slipped off...;

Fcuk it. They all go there, and thankfully mine isn't so bad. Nothing a bit of patching won't fix. It was on my list anyway. Kurust and a touch up thing can only help for so long.

It was only cos I was moving the damn thing to get at m y cabinet of goodies that's destined for the bay! lol

Right. Fcuk the round light carry on.

This car has been sitting in the garage since the tax ran out in November, and due to the cold etc. I haven't really been getting much done. With that in mind, and the fact I want to be using this car in the summer, it was time to get crackin.

Given that the car is ancient, every bearing and bush (poly where available) are being replaced. I'm making the front struts into coilovers, lowering it more, upgrading the front brakes, rebuilding the rears and obviously painting it all up so it's nice and clean. lol Most importantly though, I will be replacing the fuel tank for an injection version, as I think the current one has sediment in it and is at the heart of my intermittent

Time to strip the running gear and stuff off. The car is in pretty good shape so far, but some of the stuff that's been removed is pretty grim!

Damn saddle design tank requires the gearbox/diff/shafts/exhaust all removed before it.

Anti-tramp bar. The chassis side bush had disintegrated.

As was the trend with the leaf spring bushes, the bolts were rusted to the bush. Fun. Changing the leaves for stiffer and inch lower variants, this will also correct the sag I had on the O/S/R.

A quick pass with the grinder... These are just blanking plates to cover where a 340 gearbox would mount. Easy to remake.

Cleaned all of the rear box section up and a section of the rear floor but didn't have any red oxide primer at the time and it surface rusted again in no time lol.
