Picked up a coupl of months ago from Merseyside, did a nice 100+mile drive home no problem other then a nasty whine from the gearbox now & again (more on that later!) plan was buy to run about during the summer (aircon centreal) BUT as with every car I have, it didnt happen.

I had it home no less then 3 hours an got a bit bored....

Stripped all the interior out & sold it, lightened the wiring loom & rear wrapped it proper bo

Then went on a mission making carbon bits for just about everywhere!

Elec window switch blanks

Welded in a rear brace

Minced with the new slam panel for the bonnet intake

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00073.jpg

And hand finished the wheels

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00041.jpg

Takes me a little short of where I am now, engine removal time. If it wasnt pissing down with rain Id be outside right now doing it, as I prepped it all for removal yesterday.

Tie bars, bottom arms, hubs, ARB, aircon rad/fan system, rad etc etc is all off. Oil water drained out, went to drain the box out to find out there was next to no oil in it at all (would explain the occasional whine it was making driving it home!) already got the 22 spline shafts (already fitted) already by passed the entire immboliser wiring, ABS is removed & sensors sold for a pretty penny. OMP wheel fitted blah blah blah etc etc

Also removed rear wash wipe & motor, aireil gubbins, R/C/L gubbins, E/W shÃ*t, loads of various wiring looms that aint needed. Drilled out the rear seat brackets, headlinning out & sold, DTM mirrors fitted (lighter & lower external profile) loads of random odd jobs here an there.

Cheers mate :) there 15 inch RFX Revoloutions aswell ;) I have done more, just not really took any pics as simply CBA lol also got some OMP alloy side mounts aswell from Demon Tweeks.

Basically its now ripe & ready for an XE, just gotta take dash out & remove aircon pump & condensor & just go through the remaining wiring loom taking out all that is not needed.

Pah lol CBA seaching forever for another mint Nova shell & having to premium price for the privilidege.

And being as its an Egg I can walk into any scrappy in the country & garantee to find one ;)

The basic plan is, build it & hammer it till it breaks or till I crash it. Hoon it around, burn up some tyres & if it still works, ill take it to work the next morning. Autotesting & crap like that so its gonna get some hefty abuse :)

Got my eyes on a set of brand new 48mm Jenvey tapers for £695. Just a small matter of paying for them :(

Basic engine spec will be Autosprint race head with A/S cams, H rods with ARP's, A/S super light fly, paddle clutch, diff of some sort, Qauife shifter & linkage with SCCR (if I can stretch the budget far enought), bodies on Omex & look towards 200hp nitrous oxide.

And carbon or FG everything (except doors) polycarbs, dics's all round, flyoff handbrake blah blah blah mostly used or nearly new parts from friends of friends rally cars really. We've gone through pretty much all the car looking where we can shed weight, wether it be sprung or unsprung, an even rotational weights (alloy hubs as oppose to steel) alloy wheel nuts, general crap like that really.

I wish Dave! Where I can Im making the car pay for itself, like sold the OE airbag wheel for £44 & then got me a brand new OMP wheel from eBay USA for £52 delivered to the door (took a month to arrive tho :( ) so £8 out of pocket & a month wait is nothing like. The wheels I got for a steal, paid less for 8 of them then what I sold 4 of them for lol sold the OE interior trims an used the money for the carbon trims etc etc

have you made all that carbon stuff yaself mike??
luv the rear lites blud lol

Pretty much, just not the door cards (F&R's) as my lay up mould isnt big enought to do them (yet ;) ) Rear lights are now standard tho

Took me a while too ;p one is a fibreglass bottom for the bonnet which acts as an air intake and channels to the back of the engine bay for TB's, the bit that looks like a bit of heater matrix is a fibreglass slam panel, lowers it to make room for the intake.

Removing air con is bad!

Basically a bonnet vent like this (note extra vent just above bumper grill)

http://www.pro-tecmotorsport.com/images%5Cgallery%5CD%20Bogie%20otterburn%200ct-06_resized.jpg

You have to use a lowered slam panel for the intake to work, as the OE slam panel sits right in the way :( the big massive piece of FG pins under the bonnet, you chop a hole out in it in the right place & you have a direct air feed for a set of TB's, or you can buy a trick as fook air box that fits onto TB's an when the bonnets closed it mates up with the bonnet undertray perfectly :)

That vent is so far the most expensive part of the build (coupled with the FG bonnet it stand me at over £350) !!! If id bought it in carbon it was looking at the fat side of six hundred notes for the intake alone

Mike

FG overlayed the original pass side airbag cover late last night & prised him off earlier this morning.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00084.jpg

Trimmed him up & he fits (execpt top right where I was heavy handed & cracked the FG so its currently outta shape)

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00085.jpg

Rubbed it down with some 40grit to proper take back any nasties, an repaired the damage I caused this morning. Pratically ready for an overlay in carbon now :) which Ill probably do tomorrow.

Nah you have to chop the Corsa intakes up to fit Nova bonnets as Pro Tec & Harry Hockly only make them for Corsa's for some reason :S (altho HH buy them in from Magnum motorsport :thumb: )

Carbon fibre is possibly the worst thing ever for heatshields. Partly because the 3 main types of resin used are highly flammable in both liquid & solid state ;) When a piece of carbon fibre heats up, it becomes very flexible & when it cools down it will have changed shape.

Cheers mate :)

Only thing I dont like is where the aerocatchs are :( id prefer them in the middle but they cant go there as replacement slam panel IMHO isnt adeqaute enough to be used to mounting bonnet pins to :( and the bonnet undertray for the vent would be smack bang in the way :(

Just in the process of sorting out a rollcage for it today, 10 point OMP jobbie, then thats it for a week as im off to Wales for a work adventure lol

Looking good Mike.

Not really read much of the thread, but whats the plan? Track beast??

Cheers mate, track aye. Just a decent spec for loony driving really. Dont want to spend to much on it though else its more to shell out when it gets stacked & its money I dont want to spend on it.

Thinking about giving polycarbs & cage a miss, will reduce build cost by about eight to nine hundred quid like.

scott.parker
15-08-10, 04:28 PM
I say build it, get it on the road/track with a standard engine, see how it feels then add a cage, and modify the engine as you feel, keeps costs down till you can afford to upgrade as you feel you need to etc, IMO don't bother wit pollycarbs, unless your going for a competitively used car is it worth it??

Not really done much lately.

Sorted out where a minor rad leak had corroded the front panel

Done a bit more wiring up front etc

Converted from PAS to manual & saved 6kg +fluid though :)

New ball joints & track rod ends fitted, got scuttle all fitted back together blah blah blah.

Finally got my hands on a Corsa GSi splitter for £15 so can make a C/K one, Bailey header tank & been second chance offered a 10 point cage on eBay but the sellers a bit suspect :(

Yeah it looks alright TBH, gets properly hot in there though so will be sorting a funky fresh roof vent for it soon. Trying to get my hands on a Sparco ADV drivers seats but they dont come up second hand very often as there £400+vat a throw brand new!!

Got some more bits arrived this week anyway, bargain pair of ATE's for £30 aswell lol decided ill definetly be giving polycarbs & a cage a miss this year, time/cost factors really as its nearly ready for engine & then virtually done.

More mincage today. Spent most of the morning in a scrappy gathering some particular bits. Managed to do this before wifey dragged my ass out for a rather average dinner at the Chase Gate (PNG Midlands HQ lol )

First one I made was to small so remade him

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00007.jpg

Fcuked around for ages with some aluminium strip figuring out how to mount this an got there in the end.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00009.jpg

Got the roof sprayed, refitted door seals, got a piece of roof trim I was missing & made head way into reducing the dash loom.

Wear like that on both sides is normally a sign of under inflation, but if you keep changing the tyre and it keeps doing it on one side only then it cant be that.

At a guess you have two problems at the same time, my guess is too much neg camber and a touch of toe out lol

Yes matey, building it to sell pretty much. Some one will end up with a pretty well spec'd car aswell.

Made this up yesterday, all 300 gram of it. Mount for extinguisher system, just waiting on some annodised bolts for it, polish ut up & I can fit it.

Cage will be next year I think Paul, along with polycarbs aswell.

Its a bit too much money to spend this close to christmas for my liking, being as Ive got the engine to pay for yet :( an being self employed money & work kinda dries up around the festive period :(

Pinned the loom back nice & neat.

Adam
22-10-10, 06:23 PM
Liking that hydro handbrake mount.
I assume you will be leaving the cable attached too?

Mike
22-10-10, 06:25 PM
Aye, hydraulic handbrake. But the harder way (IMO) although it looks neater then a secondary dead mans handle so meh

Yeah keeping the cable setup aswell, not that it matter where I take it for MOT anyway, but you never know lol

The rest of the brake line fittings should be here Monday so I can now run the brake lines into the rear, through the floorpan to the rear beam :) then it just leaves the front ones to sort out which is pish easy TBH.

Adam
22-10-10, 06:27 PM
Does look sound, nice job.

Mike
22-10-10, 06:31 PM
It'll look even nicer once the extinguisher lines, battery cable & a few other bits & peices are all mounted up the length of the tranny tunnel too :)

Yeah looks alright. Not happy with any of the paint finish inside the car though so in the spring ill have to strip the interior fittings out & repaint.

And its light enough now to lift it completely off its suspesion travel from the seat rails too.

Benn
22-10-10, 06:42 PM
Why have both? Surely you'd want the hydo for handbrake turns but it will be locking the drum up to so no need for both?

Mike
22-10-10, 06:48 PM
Why have both? Surely you'd want the hydo for handbrake turns but it will be locking the drum up to so no need for both?

Cable is for current MOT requirements as far as I know.

Although theres nothing stopping me having the cable quite slack so it doesnt do much anyway :) an just turn up the bias for MOT testing.

Don't you remember the tow eye cover from his Nova?

As for the handbrake, doesn't it put extra stress on seals etc (as in parked up)?
I heard something along the lines once.

Looks great Mike :thumb:

Dont you just know it aswell lol its the little finishing touch's that make a car what it is, things you dont notice at first glance. Like the posh, etched manufacturer logo aluminium allen bolts Ive got.

As for extra pressure on seals when parked, it'll be on axle stands most of the year anyway & ill deal with VOSA when it happens lol

Fire extinguisher pull & ****

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00092-1.jpg

Stole some multi directional vents from a pos Fiat & finished the inside of the roof vent too.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00094.jpg

Aquired some bits from an original Mini for the front doors, some brackets from the Civics engine for use in the interior of my Corsa an not much else really.

re the handbrake...... park it in gear!

rally cars manage to get away with it all the time, so it must be almost legal

Mike
02-11-10, 02:47 PM
Mocked up the battery in the rear an with nowhere else for it to go its gonna have to sit down in the wheel well, all 12+kg of it. Not impressed....

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/mikenova/The%20knacker/IMG00098-1.jpg

General concensus is binning off the OE style battery off for a light weight Varley or Odessey item, fabricate & weld in a lightweight frame an sit it nice & low down in the well as forward as it can possible go.

No spare wheel anymore, so its a case of tyre weld in the glove box, if I even leave the glove box in lol

Sloth
02-11-10, 02:53 PM
im sure col smith had a varley for sale....

whats the target weight of the full she-bang?

Mike

MK999
09-01-11, 06:20 PM
Jealous, it looks almost complete inside and pretty carbon bits. Need to crack on with mine tbh lol altho uni work is beckoning too :(

Mike
09-01-11, 06:30 PM
There a bit left to do inside, mainly finish the dash loom (still) an sort through what I can cut out (removed nearly 10kg of wiring so far). Still to fit are carbon foot trays & plumb in the extinguisher.

But Ive been offered a new HH shifter for a steal of a price so might end up ripping out the centre console an shifter assembly yet :S

Benn, Re welding, figured I might aswell do it all whilst Im there & can get to it like. Done all round the bottom arm mounts & engine mount brackets, upper & lower front valance, front panel mounting, strut top to chasis legs area etc etc etc Just gotta remove the OE batt tray mounting & OE airbox bracket, weldup an spot drill holes an then paint the bay at some point :)

MK999
09-01-11, 06:31 PM
stitching it all stiffens the shell up nicely too, we all know they flex for fun lol

Doesn't look like your that far off needing one lol

Mike
09-01-11, 07:01 PM
Apparently Corsa's are fine for your run of the mill 20XE conversion but I dont think they'd cope with about 250 motor horsepower & 100+ nitrous oxide ontop lol

Aye, not far of needing an engine now Edd, **** thing is even once I get one Ill still have to strip it, spend a fortune on it & then rebuild it before it even goes in :(
