Right guys.

Got this let coming, Its on an f20 atm, LEEH has donated a pot flywheel if needed for an f28, but, will the f20 be ok?

I really want the 6 speed, i think its kinda cool to have a 6 speed novalol

But will the 5 speeds take the punishment I will give them? 280bhp aswell

Also, do you need an internal shifter for the 6 speed?

Or can I use a normal linkage?

John
31-05-10, 06:52 PM
Rich runs an f20 on his no probs. dave marshall also ran an f20 on his 280bhp let no probs. Just find a good one, do a full gasket rebuild and get some good fresh oil. All Imo of course.

It seems to be choice, as the lad in total vauxhall, recons he put 20 boxes in his 280bhp let astra.

What does eveyone recon?

I worked it out I think.

16" wheels, f28 ratio off the net, came out to 191mph or something, with a 7200 limiterlol

considering paul struggled to get near 170mph after hitting 150mph+ i very much doubt one will hit 190mph

Matt, i went to bruntingthorpe a couple of years back, rich metcalfs well specced let on an f28, ran 159.9mph flat out iirc. All measured with gps. he ran 195 45 15's iirc.

There's no way you'll see over 165mph imo! (all on private roads of course)

F20 will die if car is driven properly. I've broken 2 on standard XE's.

No need for internal shifter, just needs the linkage modifying.

Ahh, ok bud.

How hard was it to do the mount?

And linkage?

Lee H
31-05-10, 09:24 PM
Mount was done by Chris Astley when he welded the new inner wings in.

Linkage needs shortening where it attaches to the box (rather than lengthening like you do on an F20 by turning the white bush round)

if it was me, i'd fit the f28 after new synchro rings and a full check and rebuild.

If it works in the cav, it will work in the novalol

And to lengthen the linkage, do you cut it? Or turn the plastic part? TIT

The only way you'll know whether it'll last or not is to try it mate. There are so many variables with these things, previous milage, previous owner and servicing, how the last owner drove the car etc. Some'll be good some'll be half dead.

I'm sticking in an F20 first, 75k miles done mean't to be solid. I know there's a risk, but I wanna actually try it for myself. If it blows then I'll swap it for an F28 (hopefully by then David Dixon will have made a custom F28 mount for the original Nova gearbox mount :d).

Thats impossible to do as the original Nova chassis leg mount is in the way of the F28 as the box is so much bigger.

We thought we did IIRC Benn put up a pic but the mount was moved forward a bit and then welded. Original mount and shape moved forward.

The rear part of the standard shell mount has to be cut off at the very least to even get the box in the engine bay so it is going to involve some welding to make a new chassis mount whatever is done.

Problem with using the flat flywheel is you have to use the XE cover plate for the clutch which isn't going to take phase 2 for long without slipping. The Turbo cover plate is stronger but will only fit the pot flywheel.

my f16 is still going. gripper diff, 888's, running 17 psi now on a std kkk so whatever power that is (300 maybe?). use it for drag racing mainly so gets flat out 1st and 2nd, and its still fine. that said ive ate f20's too.

So all this F20x10 to get torque figure rate for the box is a bt unrelaible. Just sounds like some F20's have had a hard life and were knackered to start with.

F16 must be crazy acceleration in 1st and 2nd.

F number being NM torque/10 is a load of old toss imho.

Just look at the F10 and F13.... aside from some ratios(and the 4/5spd), they are identicle inside, how the hell is that 30NM more torque capacity!!!!

and the F23 is just stupidly bombproof, many folks in the States running 500NM through them lol.

Its all about how you treat them

Hmm, I just want 6 gears now.

at 70mph, sat on motorways etc, what sort of revs is the engine doing? Just off boost? Or is it always sat in boost:confused:

Stuart

depends on the boost controller, tyre sizes etc.

tbh I dont really care about old ancient gearboxes :p

Nova_Tek
01-06-10, 10:22 AM
If it's motorway cruise economy you want then the F20 3.55 or the 3.42 Final drive. They have a longer 5th gear and will easily be under 3k at 70mph. (I'm hoping the one I got is one of those. IIRC It's off a Astra Mk3 so they tend to have the 3.55)

Stuart
01-06-10, 10:24 AM
or fit the 5th pair from a WR F18

oh but thats not 6spd for spec list whoring...

Depends on a few things like intercooler size etc but mine is just about on boost at 2.5k. Ideal as can easily overtake people without changing out of 6th on the motorway.

why are u worrieng about fuel consumption? its gone be a 2 litre turbo nova like not a diesel. gearbox choice should be decided by what suits your driving style and power output not by how much petrol itll cost you, cos trust me therell b alot more than just petrol costs to drain your money.

if you drive it easy itl b grand like. novas are light it wont take much pedal to keep her moving along at 80. if fuel economy is your biggest problem trust me youll be lucky!lollol

Lee can have a go anytime, as if he stacks it, I get a shiny black turbo GSIlol
