hi have found an excellent example of one of the first nova's produced and i am underway on a good old restoration project. after what happened with my last nova i intend to finish this all the way and own it for a good long time after aswell.

yes please do mate i have been round the whole car and all the bodywork is painted on inside very well protected boot floor is even laqured.

the strengthening bits in the boot floor runs front to back not 2 bars side to side
My Plans are to clean her up good and proper, all the rust will be sorted out, wheels refurbished with low pro tyres. bump strip from side of car removed, engine taken out and rebuilt and painted, chassi strength kit and engine bay stitch welded and new track rod ends etc. Also will be lowered by 60mm with bilstien shockers.

is that better or not will check out pics of my old nova as unsure exactly what you mean.

even some Y reg's have the later style floor I think, sure the style like this is very rare, only seen it twice

Its only the first few thousand cars on the production run afaik, but odd as Nova production started later than Corsa from what I have read.

Indeed! Which is why i think its preproduction rhd car, this car was found in bedford so may of been an ex vauxhall test car. The production change makes this shell more unusual being rhd and changing it so early, stve (duick) will no doubt know from the chassis number how early it is

Thanks guys for all the good comments, Yes i Bought the nova fome ebay from a guy called tim in north hamptenshire. The pictures he put up on ebay do the car no justice at all, i bought it expecting alot worse and when it was dropped of by transporter i couldent believe my luck i had stumbled accross something i thought i would never have without paying through the nose. The best bit about the story is i even knocked tim down on the listing price by £50! It will be cleaned up and kept standard apart from suspension. Engine is being taken out and rebuilt and painted up thats about it.

Standard is definitely the way to go with an early Nova like this..

I'm holding on for an early mk1 5 door in white, but if I was looking for a 3 door, it would be something like this one..
I like this car, a lot...
My neighbour had one on an A plate, very similar, around the time I had my Tigra..
Think he gave it away or scrapped it...:(

Got the engine out today and took gearbox off (need a new clutch), next time I'm hiring a hoist - had a right time dropping it out - split 2 pins off the distributor cap ha ha. Going to clean engine bay and engine down during the week with degreaser. Slight bit of rust was found when headlights and bumper were taken off - nothing major I hope, will take wings off to examine more during week. Will Take Pictures so don't worry everyone lol

Gave the gearbox and block a bit of a wash, its going to be well hard to get it clean enough to paint lol.

will be taking sump off and oil filter, then its time to really get it clean for painting. Anyone have any idea's in the best way to clean engine? Also which is the best paint to use?

Got sump cleaned ready for paint

I have been painting various bits and cleaning the inner wings up so will get some more pics up when i get a chance, been really busy at the min but I have found a really good welder that will weld in chassi kit and stitch weld engine bay aswell so that is good.

Very very clean car mate.
When your doing your engine block, use a grinder with a wire wheel on, and some BRUSH on VHT paint.
Mine, its very shiny, make sure you put 1 coat, then wait till its dry, then another and another.

lol your right 1.2 is stupid but im just doing it so it looks nice lol till i get a nicer engine when she's on the road. i was just going to use hammerite on the block and high temp paint on the head also hammerite on gearbox will be ok wont it?

Yeah hammerite works from what ive seen.
Id just clean the gearbox if i were you.
Youll have to get yerself down here one day, ive got 2 novas and an escort xr3i cabby now man lol

Sounds good, times are hard here aswell im broke and theres no jobs, so im trying to rent a garage and start my own business, its the only way to get anywhere.
I got banned aswell mate,, ive got 11 month left, hopefully ill have my money for insurance/test/etc.. and the car all finished by then. id come to yours if i could, havent seen you in ages, hopefully this nova gets finished aswell, its a belter.
hi all been really busy but still done a little work on the nova few pics to come, spent alot of money on all new engine parts, full rally chassi kit and front valance and headlight replacement panals. found a great welder who lives round the corner from me which is great, he owns 5 opel manta's and a really old carlton estate! he came round to see the nova and we had a really good talk about work needed to be done, he really know's his stuff. will take a few more pics this week.

next few jobs now the head has been skimmed and crack tested and new valve stem seals, is to get it painted with high temp red. also the block has been apart and rebuilt so it to can be painted - black. (i have pics of both head and block in bits) i have removed the tank and the wheels so i can paint them also.

Not a problem, Nice to see the effort. Also nice to see a standard car. Been so long since Iv seen a nova with anything other than a c20xe...or did they come standerdlol
lol seems to be the case now, although i still meet people who are shocked to hear people are putting red tops in nova's lol lol

just had a look through mate, looking good especially all the painted parts. keep it simple, maybe throw a 1300 SR engine in for a bit more poke but keep away from XEs and the like :thumb:

Painted the camshaft caseing with high temp paint and im not happy with the matt finish. While i was fitting the cam i got oil on it and when i tryed to wipe it off with panel wipe it took the paint straight off!! So i will be re-doing it all in red hammerite smooth.

I remembered to remove the radiator bracket from the N/S headlight panal as my replacement dosent have one on.

still need to claen up the whole area and take to bare - where is to be welded.

nice work mate loving the project, how did you get such a good finish on the red bits the gearbox looks top :)
gave them a real good clean up and then used hammerite smooth areosol its £10 a tin like!!! Its quite thin so takes a few nice even coats leaving a good half hour between coats for the best finish. Thanks for the good comments mate.

Looking good pal. I like this alot .I agree with others when they say steer clear of the XE route ...i think keeping the 1.2 is the best idea for originality but for more poke fit an SR or GTE engine!! Just make sure the whole car is structurely sound completley before worrying about anything else pal . Shes a beaut tho ..rare for one this old not to have been scrapped :thumb: keep up the good work mate !!

The cross member does have some rot at the front though, and i bet most of the bits that appear rusty are very very thin metal in those areas. Be best off replacing it imo as you know it wont come back, in thery.

I cleaned off that crap heat resistant paint from the cam housing, i damaged a brand new camshaft seal that i had previously put in - so have to buy another now (wot a tit) lol

IMO you should replace the crossmember tho, looks a tad rusty in side
As i have had so much advice on to replace the crossmember, i have decided that your all right and im going ahead with it. The crossmember its self is only £35 for a brand new replacement, it wont take much to remove old one and plus then nothing else will need doing in the bay im definatly going ahead with it.
Quick question - should i brace it up somehow when removing cross member or is it not necsessary???
any advice much appreciated :thumb:

This is the rust in battary tray, it's had a plate tack welded on each edge lol CRAP!! covered in black stuff and so its made it all worse than it actually should of been looking at the rest of the car.

Right as i decided to replace the cross-member aswell, i ordered one online over the weekend but on the monday they rang me up saying they had none in stock and were not getting any more in.
They offered me the lower panel already attatched to the cross-member at extra cost of £25!!! when i told them i already have the lower panel bought from them and could i return it and get a refund? They said no as it had been to long and so i couldent return the panel!!!
I went to hadrian panels and Beaver panels they both didnt have the panel in stock and didnt no when they were getting more in so i was very frustrated.
I ended up going back to the original company (carz2.com) and ordered the lower panel including cross-member, so now i have a lower panel for sale (BN £15) lol
Not much progress as been very busy past few weeks, have started sanding bay down im doing whole bay back to bare metal. will get some progress pics up next week.

Proberly written onto the panel before it was even welded to the car and then not wiped off properly before paint.
Few more bits arrived today -
Anti roll bar (swapped for 1.2 carb inlet mainfold)
Vauxhall Engine Mount, Water Pump and Air Filter.
Also Vauxhall fuel pump gasket, fuel neck gasket, sender unit gasket and oil drain plug and washer.
Im unsure weather to keep the standard suspension and use an ARB on the front. (so its still original/standard) or weather to get a lowering kit with no ARB (which is what i want to do but dont want to spoil the car as its so old and better off keeping standard)
Advice would be appreciated

Yeah i got the bumper from Ebay aswell as the Exhaust,
I think he still has a 1.0L and 1.3L set-up.
get the anti roll bar with a 40mm drop and get the plough on with a wraparound, proper cool imo
i really want to but but got to keep this baby standard lol

with bits stuck in my eye lol. the laquer was well tough to sand through
never experienced anythink like it before it must of had super hard laquer on because it took ages to sand through lol. managed to get both legs and slam panel down to bare metal and in zinc primer, just got the bulk head and inner wings now. few pictures....

remove bonnet, steering rack, suspension, tie arms, hubs and wheels and sand down bulk head, inner-wings and cut cross member out. i have invested in a spot weld drill bit because i blunted a few drill bits last time lol.

Hi all been busy working on the Nova over the weekend got alot done. crossmember is out and inner arches are cleaned up and everything is ready for the welder. but unfortunately i have run out of internet usage this month and won't be-able to post any pics till the 6th :-( but im hoping to have the welding done by then and engine bay primed'd up. picking up my compressor this week as-well its been away to get serviced at the cost of 140quid !!! but at least it will be running sweet now and do what i need it to lol. just thought i would do a little up-date via my mobile lol pics on the 6th

welding is being done next week aswell which is good also got my compressor bk finally - its taken 3 months !!! they say its because its not under warrenty and they have to do warrenty covered tools first.

Right this thread had been dead for some time now - due to me loosing my job just before christmas, but im working again and can start back up on the restoration. I have booked her in to get the welding done by my mate on sat 30th so will get some pics up then.

Well we got the car to my mates lock-up and he started on the welding, stayed their for a-bit while he got the cross member lined up with wings etc and showed him where I wanted stitched. Got a few pics will get more once he's done a-bit more.

Just a small update - I have the battery tray area rust free now unfortunately I wasn't their while the repair was being done so I only have before (scroll up to see before pic) and after pics and not during.
I bought a replacement battery tray panel via SAS and cost £36, but didn't use full panel just part of it. I have marked in red where the welds are. It has been welded in this way so that the water channels still work. The area still needs a clean up its just got built hamber and zinc primer as so its protected for the moment.
Anyway enough talk here are a couple of pics.

good repair.. is the car going to wear the sound proofing over the back of the 'bay/bulkhead?
If not might be worth just filing/filling those weld marks off the firewall whilst youve got the opportunity..?
no wont have the sound proof thing but the engine and stuff isn't getting fitted for a while yet untill bay is sprayed up like new so have plenty time to clean it all up lol

looking really good mate i got a set of these euro lights to of german ebay 6euro the pair i just used the drivers side one to give me 2 reverse lights and put the fog light on a bracket below the bumper that folds up out of sight when not in use
Hi all Its been a long and hard time the past few months, but things are looking up at the min. I got the nova down to my work and will be cracking back on with the rebuild. I'm getting the rest of the welding done on the back end and then a full respray in original colour and build her back up like new. Got a little progress so far, after getting all my things from my old garage to work I had to sort through it all and get it out of everybody's way and I have alot of stuff whixh i just dont want to get rid of because I know I will end up needing or wanting it in the future lol.
I got steering rack on and rolled her into the workshop and started stripping the interior out when I got a chance while I was ment to be working lol
I had a good poke around on the O/S sill and rear arch - just some surface rust nothing major at-all but the N/S sill, bottom of the rear arch where it meets the sill and inner wing are fooked to put it lightly lol towards the front of the car the sill is solid like the O/S.
So plans so far is get her stripped out completely and prep area's ready for the welder.

Update time, I've been staying late at work a couple of nights this week and stripped the nova as much as I could. I have to leave her rolling as I have nothing to wheel her about on, I am waiting on a steering wheel puller thought I would be-able to remove it with out but can't lol as soon as it turns up I'll remove dash ect.
My mate who own's a paint-less dent removal company went over the N/S quarter panel and roof and got all the dents out, he will be going over the O/S quarter and roof soon also the tailgate and doors. He said he doesn't want anything but I'll get him some beers because its a trillion times better than having to fill them.

So the second night i stayed late at work it I removed all the GLUE!!!! from inside roof area what a horrible job didn't want to damage roof - although I did find the start of rust on inner roof skin!!! must be from trapped moisture in the glue used for headlining underlay so DA'd off with 180 and used built hamber hydrate 80. prepped boot floor and rear seating area. OMG the glue on the rear suspension turrets used for glueing the carpet on - I thinners it off with a scotch and the glue wont wash off my hands at all !!!! lol
cleaned everything down and panel wiped off rolled in booth and gave it a coat of acid etch on any bare metal then went home ****ed lol starting at 8am and finishing at 10.30pm - not good lol

Excellent work you're doing there, engine bay is very tidy.
Few parts arrived today from Mount Panel's based in Leeds. I bought 2x full sill's + 2x rear arch repair sections, for a grand total of £69.63!!!!:thumb:, that's all in with free delivery from their own man in a van!!.:thumb: Excellent service and remarkably cheap.
In the pic is also the inner rear arch repair section, souced with help from bazil :thumb: (german ebay).

so I ended up - testing out my sandblaster, swapping wheels over to sell, flapper wheeling a sill down to see how bad it was, cutting some rust out, taking alot of pictures and stripped O/S door completely ready for prepping.

Yeah I agree about these older shellsmuch better quality steel and sure its thicker???
No I know a guy who build's rally cars and is really into old vauxhalls he own 6 opel manta's lol and he does all my welding for me at a very reasonable price. We do - do crash repair at our work basically anything that doesn't need/involve jigging and also custom bodywork and painting.
I will acid etch any bare steel then 2pack hi build primer everything then seam sealer where needed then you would normally paint, but I will be applying 2pack primer twice rubbing down in-between applications. Then applying paint and lacquer
Got some more done and spoke to the welder and she's getting the last of the welding done next week.

Also I removed all the tar and buzzed off this area no rust was found :)

I have re-done the engine bay - using a mixture of wire wheels spot rust sand blaster in hard to get to places and p80 then p180 on a DA just because since the last time I did it and had the welding done - very minor surface rust had started in places . Applied hydrate 80 over the whole area and left it over night then next day I etch prime'd it on luch break but sadly forgot to get pics of this stage:(

So all the interior is ready and the engine bay is ready for 2pack primer. I am borrowing a roll over jig from the welder and when she is back I will be doing the underside and inner arches.

The N/S wing has a GM sticker on and the number 179 stamped on the top where bolts down but the O/S (damaged) wing has no sticker on and the number 280 or 230 can't quite tell if it's a 8 or a 3? can any one shed any light on this?

I've contacted the company I bought them from but they will properly blame it on transit but I feel the Packaging is terrible for such items!
Thoughts/suggestions welcome.
I will properly be able to fix it buts that's not the point I shouldn't have to be repairing them that's why their new lol

Sorry to see the damaged wings due, but im afraid it happens when transporting such items from abroad, nothing you can sort though im sure, get the dent guy to look them over?

Well I have sent the damaged wing back and now have to find another undamaged new GM one ASAP.
I have repainted my sump as I wasn't happy with it last time I did it, and also painted other bits up

I got sorted from novarally (Colin - thanks mate) in the end.
I'm borrowing an A-frame roll over / split jig from the welder and doing the underside also.
I bolted my sump on to the block Might do the core plugs red???

Also had a bit of bad news - I am missing the cam, cam housing and other bits from the engine, pulled out my head and it has been damaged since its skim, must of been during the move. I went round to my mates who I knew had a 12st he had pulled out of a brown B reg nova about a year ago with a genuine 28k on the clocks. I bought it minus inlet, carb and gearbox for £40 inc steering wheel and the colom attached and the clocks saying mileage. Bargin I thought.

Not sure if 1 litre would be enough unless it is thinned & sprayed. Brush painting it will give better coverage but the finish won't be great as it is hard to work with.

I have had my mate simon who's a paintless dent removal specialist, go over the roof and both rear Quarters so far for free, which is a bonus. I have returned the O/S wing as it was really bad and the N/S is still in my cellar lol.
Looking for a New O/S Front wing Mk1 genuine if you know of any?
Update - I painted some bits let it dry then gave them a second coat but using a different brand and its reacted (badly) its the first time its ever done it to me by using different brands. so had to sand it all down and re-do them.
Decide to use Hammerite - hammered red - its like a textured metallic effect I thinned it down roughly 10% with 2k thinner and sprayed through a gun, its the first time I have used it and am very pleased with the finish.

Also I have been repairing my drivers door because the very first day I got the car I drove it straight down the drive forgetting about the wheelie bin and managed to get it wedged between the car and the house - result - door bent right in. I popped what I could out straight away but it left the door with quite a bad kink in it. I have decided to repair it and sort a better condition door at a later date.

Inside sill is in really really good condition has been waxed from factory with some green coloured wax which is dry not sure if its meant to be but no rust whatsoever! - really lol

Update - I was at collage yesterday so didn't get anything done on the nova.
Went in today ready to tackle my driver's door as it has proved a bit of a challenge for me - nearly 2 days its taken just to get it into primer lol
Anyway I re-skimmed it with some U-pol liquid gold this morning had a brew and warmed my hands preparing my mind for the task ahead lol

I put guide coat on sanded down with P80 the put more guide coat on and finished sanding with P180 cleaned off ready for etch and hi-build primer.

yes side mouldings going back on, I has to cut 2 sets of studs off to be-able to fill and sand down properly. I have kept the rest on so this should keep the moulding straight but I'm unsure on the best way to attach it at the end now. I don't want to tiger seal it on as it will take the paint off if I ever need to take moulding off. not sure if double sided trim tape will be durable enough?
Just had a phone call from the welder and the nova is done and getting dropped back off at work tomorrow woop woop
will give a proper update tomorrow night :)

wow, thats looking really good, its also the best and easiest way to do the work on the car with it being on a spit like that, so much better than laying on your back welding and grinding overhead !
also iam loving the manta very cool !

Nice work mate, glad you wen the extra mile to strip the underneath, a mentally painful task but you'll be glad you do it once its all painted up!

yeah I thought the same, its only a couple of extra weeks work lol but well worth it plus I'd be daft not to do it after being lent the split/jig.

Got a bit more done on the underside today - nearly done now like.
Hopefully if my boss is ok with it - I'm going to get the underside and engine bay blasted by a mobile sandblaster, got a quote for £150 so sounded reasonable he can come on Saturday and will get into all the niggle bits better than me and go over it all as well. Fingers crossed

That is one clean looking chassis, If you can get a sand blaster on it, itll clean up a treat.
