lol yea my girlfreind (yorkie) did the first video and roperstun did the second one, the first run was 16.3 and the second run was 16.8, i had my girlfreind in the car for the second run. i got crap starts on both runs and the clutch was slipping a bit aswell, i think once iv got the clutch working right and iv tuned it up 30psi i should be in the low 15`s :) im going pod tomorrow so i`ll get some more video`s up.

roperstun
28-08-11, 11:00 AM
how did you do at pod?

Dervy
16-01-12, 07:51 PM
well afder about 6 months of neglect, my poor car actually got some attention today. it has slowly been loosing boost pressure, it used to be running at 28 psi, but its now running about 18 psi http://www.tdocuk.com/images/smilies/icon_sad.gif. i thought that maybe it was my actuator, so i set about finaly fitting my cossie 23psi actuator that iv had for about 2 years.

here`s the old set up using the standard actuator
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture381-1.jpg

here`s how the new one will fit, look how big it is lol
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture382-3.jpg

here`s the new bracket that i made
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture387-4.jpg

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture383-1.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture384-3.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture388-4.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture390-1.jpg

afder i fitted it, i took it out for a spin but the boost pressure was still down at 18psi, so i pulled over to have a look, i then found that i had a split in one of my boost pipe`s lol. never mind an easy fix and will soon be at full pressure again http://www.tdocuk.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif yay

Looking good Sam, Are you running a bleed valve? Tbh I guess there isn't a lot of point any more. Any way keep the updates coming pal.

Dervy
16-01-12, 11:19 PM
yea i probs will as its only 23psi lol, i need to get a decent one though as the last one i had was ****.

roperstun
17-01-12, 09:20 PM
Have you had this on the dyno yet?
Are you settling for 23psi or do you want more?

Dervy
18-01-12, 01:37 AM
not yet but its booked in with the tdoc dyno day on the 4th of feb up at rst, so thats why iv started sorting out the problems, next thing to sort out is the clutch. no im getting another bleed valve, so i can get it up to around 28psi :)

Dervy
18-01-12, 02:44 AM
well after i sorted out the actual reason for the low boost, i.e split boost pipe, i took it out for a play. took a little video to show how well it pulls, as you can see the boost peeks at 23psi then drops of to 20 and holds there. i think i need to adjust the actuator arm a little bit.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture001.jpg

show about the bumpy video the camera was on the steering wheel

been playing with the car again, had a go at changing the dash bulbs, because as with most vauxhalls the dash lights are crap. Not had the dials out before so i struggled getting the speedo cable of, i was trying to twist it of, when it needed a retainer moving and then it just slides of. after pulling the dash to pieces i found that i had the wrong bulbs lol, never mind.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture012.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture014-1.jpg

i then done something a bit more interesting, i decided to twist my fuel plunger round to the max fuel setting and turn up the boost. i gave it half a turn on my new boost controller which got me up to 25psi.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture022-2.jpg

the standard setting is at number one, iv turned it anti-clockwise by 90 degrees so its on its max fueling setting, this gave me another pound of boost so its holding at 26psi now, which is nice lol.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture023-2.jpg

Dervy
26-01-12, 06:26 PM
got my flywheel back today from the machine shop, not quite as mad as the other one, should have maybe had a bit more taken off but its 2.5 kilo`s lighter then a standard one, so not to bad. im going to try and fit 220mm clutch to the flywheel thats on the car now. hopefully i`ll be able to get it back on the car at some point, but for the time being im going back to a standard clutch.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture026-2.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture025-1.jpg

managed to get a borg and beck clutch for £55 which is an absolute bargin. it looks really beefy, its got triple layer springs on it, which is good as the clutch that is on the car at the minute has only got double layer springs, so this one should be stronger.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture030-3.jpg

26-01-12, 06:57 PM
Looks like it goes well in the vid!
Liking the amount of boost you're running  lol

Dervy
26-01-12, 07:08 PM
yea its not bad :) but thats with pretty bad clutch slip

Balley
27-01-12, 05:33 PM
Glad you have finally turned the plunger round, I did notice a bit of difference with mine too, best of all it cost nothing to do :)

Dervy
27-01-12, 05:36 PM
yea its good, not as smokey as i thought it would be, but its fueling realy well, and i can still turn the max fuel screw up more. :)

Dervy
31-01-12, 09:42 PM
well today was the day, it was new clutch and flywheel time, and what a day to do it on, i dont think it got above freezing today and there was snow in the air, but i had my thermal overals on so i was nice and warm http://www.mk3oc.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture037-2.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture038-1.jpg

finally got the flywheel out, and there are a couple of blue spots, but the friction plate looks ok, i think the reason that it slipped was that the ''so could uprated pressure plate'' is actually crap and not very strong at all

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture039-1.jpg

i compared the new borg and beck pressure plate with the old ebc one.
as you can see in the pic that the ebc one on the right has a double layer spring but the borg and beck one on the left has a triple layer spring, so the new will be stronger, which is good http://www.mk3oc.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture040-1.jpg

i come up with a nice little flywheel locking device
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture041-1.jpg

flywheel and clutch in
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture042-3.jpg

this is how dark it was when i got finished
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture043-1.jpg

test results and video`s coming soon

They temd to run really hot when you start flooring them with bigger boost through them, ive not spotted if you have fitted an external oil coller, but as standard the oil coolers are in the water jacket, so the hotter they get then the hotter the coolant gets and the temp guage goes nuts lol

Mine always used to get fairly hot under enthusiastic driving, but aslong as you calmed your passions before it got to the red and let it cool off a touch (which never took long) then all was good:thumb:

Adam
06-02-12, 07:42 PM
I remember on my old astra, give it full boost for a bit and the temps would hit the roof.
But that was 20+psi through the standard engine/ic etc lol

Snap lol

So i can imagine what the temp guage wouldve been doing on Hendrix' cav when he upped the boost to about 35+psi and nailed it all the way home from Baxter's down the M1:eek:

And yes that was when he destroyed his turbo:thumb:

Dervy
06-02-12, 08:00 PM
balley- yea there is still loads i can do, i haven`t done any head work, so there alot to gain from that, its got a standard cam, the fuel pump is still relatively standard, and a better turbo would help.

as for the engine temps, its depends on how much fuel your putting through it, and if you drive any turbo car at full tilt then its going to get hot.

Balley
06-02-12, 08:18 PM
Diesels can not run lean (they will just rev less as the engine speed is determined from fuel), so despite what people say they don't get hot from running high boost levels. They get hot from running to much fuel (e.g. advanced fuel timing, which is what you get from turning the screw up) then like Sam says. That is why you shouldn't keep winding up the Max fuel screw as the EGT goes shy high and . Altering the angle and the timing on the fuel pump like me and Sam have is what you want to do ideally as you can limit the excessive fuel at low revs.

Running a Bigger turbo and I/c does also Lowers the engine temp as the turbo produces enough air for the amount of fuel going in.

Sam- I think you should do a bit of head work and try fitting a focus manifold like you said. Should see a nice gain there, then possibly try using another fuel pump. I have heard about using a transit fuel plunger as they are 11mm rather than 10mm IIRC. What ever you do I am sure it will be impressive.

Adam

Small turbo working its bollox off, dumping a load of heat into its oil cooling=heat transfer into the izuzu's coolant system?

Spudly
06-02-12, 08:48 PM
Was going to say, even in standard trim running 4psi (iirc) they get stupidly hot, and very very fast!

Dervy
06-02-12, 09:12 PM
cheers dan, yea i think next time i go scrappy im going to look for a focus manifold, as for the pump, i had a good chat to jammey who runs the tdoc website and he`s guna give me the benafit of his knowledge, which pretty extensive on the bosch pumps.

i bought one of them little keyring camera`s of ebay for £10 and was quite impressed with the quility of the video, especially the sound, although i have looked in to getting one of the HD one`s as they are much better quility and are only around £25. anyway i went out in the car and got this video, i was just wondering if anybody thought my car is too smokey lol

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture220.jpg

There is hardly any play in the bearings, it spins nice and free and there is no damage to any of the blades on the compressor, another bargin at £20. im guna clean it up, polish the compressor houseing then i might bung it on ebay or i might just keep it lol

im using 204 40s on them so they have a bit of a stretch on them, which is cool :)

they are a bit close but i haven`t got the bearings in yet, so i`ll have a couple more millimeters clearance, but i might have to put some 2mm spacers on

29-08-12, 09:49 PM
heres the big update, these first few pics are from monday where i spent most of the day on the car

gazebo up for when it was going to rain, be prepared lol
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture246.jpg

found that my inner cv boot was split, so that was another ball ache that i wasn`t expecting
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture247.jpg

then did the gearbox gaskets to try and stop it leaking, but the t**ts on ebay sent me a gasket set for a f10 so the main one that i needed didn`t fit, so i had to make do with a load of instant gasket for now
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture251.jpg

then came the fun bit of fitting the billy`s and 5 stud, please excuse the red paint everywhere, i couldn`t find any black
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture252.jpg

so that was all on monday and the rest of these are from today

removing the old 4 stud 256mm rear discs/hubs
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0215.jpg

on with the new 5 stud 288mm rear discs/hubs, new discs and pads are on order, i just wanted to get the new set up on asap
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0214.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0212.jpg

plenty on clearance on the rear arches thanks to the strech on the tyres
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0219.jpg

just a perv shot of the sexy front top mounts :)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0216.jpg

and the final shot for now, as you can see the front needs to come down more, but i need to put some spacers on the front to give me enough clearance for the wheels on the spring seats.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Photo0218.jpg

and iv also fitted new wishbones and track rod ends

this is how the turbo would sit without modding the manifold

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture431.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/Picture432.jpg

and that would never do because the turbo would be where the grill sits

so out with the grinder and welder, i chopped the wastgate flange off cus it wouldn`t fit on the left side

here you can see how much i needed to mod the manifold to fit the flange

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/20121215_111322_zpseec76960.jpg

after lots of cutting, welding and heating it was done.

then on saturday my exhaust decided to crack and start blowing on the way to work, and then on the way back from work the bottom rad hose split. so i had to spend my long weekend that i had planned for getting other stuff done, getting the bloody thing all fixed again.

but with the exhaust out of the way it let me test fit the new turbo set up, which i think looks very comical

there wasn't much to do at work today so i finished getting my turbo ready

tried taping a thread into the oil feed port so i can thread a banjo bolt in, but only managed to get about 5mm in because the port got narrower, so i welded a nut on top, and that seems like it will work fine
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/20121221_153612_zpsf11b997a.jpg

i wasn't happy with there being a hole where the wastgate used to be, as im using a external wastgate the port is not necessary so i decided to fill it up.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/20121221_152358_zpsfba98b53.jpg

welded a sump bung to the down pipe flange so it fills up the hole

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e69/amandayork_photo/20121221_152455_zps71eb4028.jpg

here's how it looks in place, should hopefully stop any turbulence occurring by the exhaust gasses rushing into the port and having no where to go.

I just wanted to say that I've read through all 35 pages of this thread and I really enjoyed your build. keep up the good work and look forward to seeing it running with the big turbo. There are a lot of turbo calculators online that will help you calculate the volume and P.R required and help you find a compressor map that suits your engine. this should keep your intake temperatures down and help with power. But you have had really good results with the trial and error approach.

The engines governor will start would around 4400rpm and fully kick in around 5000rpm. My experience tells me that you need to raise it to get the turbo to boost any way near full in first and second gear. I found mine very laggy when I originally fitted my T25 set because the fuel was cutting off by the time the turbo was working. I say to this day the best modification on mine was to raise the max governed speed too about a 1000rpm higher than original. Still doesn't achieve 25psi in first but it does in second where I was lucky to get 15 before. You don't have to rev it higher either. You can still rev it to say 5k. Just means it will still be putting a proper amount of fuel through!

first of i will apologize this is going to be fairly wordy.

ok peeps there is a reason there has been no updates. unfortunately the new head gasket did not sort it out, and after a couple of weeks of driving it with it boiling up on nearly every journey i got fed up and decided to take it of the road so i could do the job properly.

when i told my brother i was taking it off the road he said i should try and do the modification that i'v been bin researching for the past couple of years.

so here is project 16v

went scrappy and got a 16v valve head and pistons from a y17dt engine and started the long and disgusting job of cleaning the head up, as you can see its bloody filthy.
here you can see the awful design of the standard inlet manifold.

right now back to the cylinder block, i decided to have it skimmed. so i stripped and sent it of, turns out it was not flat but the bloke did a cracking job of skimming it. only problem is i didn't check the cylinder bores before sending it off, and they turned out to be so badly pitted that i had to scrap the block.

Very interesting indeed! Wonder what the hybrid Y17DT you're building will do. Subscribed!

right i'll start of just by saying that iv had to get rid of the 16v head, the bosch pump could not supply enough pressure to keep the injectors happy, so its back to an 8v but it is running better then it ever has before and the garrett t25 turbo is working brilliantly.

right now on to better things, we shall start with the cooling issue. as most of you know as soon as you turn up the boost and fuel on these things you start getting high engine temps and you can't really boot it for too long before the coolant temp guage goes up.
i have finally gotten round to sorting this out on my car, with this.

it only just fits but it is in there with plenty of clearance for everthing. it now does not go above 90 degrees no matter how much i boot it, so im well happy.

now to the new bigger brakes
