Edd
21-01-10, 01:18 PM
looks a bargain,

what other plans you got for it ?

napalm_27
21-01-10, 01:28 PM
not much really tbh not going mad with it just yet till i get a decent income
just stick it on a decent suspension setup and set of alloys and bigger brakes for now and just have some fun

then once the money comes in again il have it all apart again and go for some fibreglass panels full cage etc and then have some more fun

and then spend some more on it but the main plan is to stick with a small block not go mad with the engine so if it grenades itself then i can just change it to another with no real hassle

just want something to have some fun with this year really as iv missed out last year from being stupid and getting banned so im going to treat myself on the 24th april and go castle combe if she's up and running as its my birthday on the 27th

napalm_27
21-01-10, 01:46 PM
its in rather good nick think the head gasket has gone on the 1.2 in it which tbh i dont really give a toss about but mate never mentioned it when i picked it up and yes we went to college together doing mechanics so he should of known lol

but yer rust wise it isnt bad at all few dinks and scratches but it will only get more on the track as never drove on track before and im most likely going to spin out onto the gravel 'fo sho' lol

kc_08
22-01-10, 01:49 PM
umm not really sure dude, will have loom and that just needs an ecu chip and transponder which you can pick up from corsa forums, but its quite away from you mate. also have things like standard sport manifold, s/s down pipe.

23-01-10, 07:13 PM
had a little play today just finished but no pics as to dark
taken all the seats out and half taken the dash out

had a look under neath slight bit of rust on the lower half of the rear quater that may need some attention but not to bothered really

also noticed a wopping great big cat back stainless system on it :thumb: result!!
look like a 2.5' cat back system which is handy as now i dont need to feck about with that just connect the manifold and down pipe etc onto that :thumb:
going to have a play tomorrow aswell and il get some pics of how it stands :thumb:

well the time is drawing close to getting the vxr engine
it should be here tomorrow so going to start taking the c20ne out and have a mock up of how it will fit in
had a word with me old man about getting me some metal from work and getting any mounts/plates made that i need so thats that problem out the way..
going to source a f28 hopefully one with a lsd already fitted to give me some decent traction
also going to look at the shafts to see what condition there in so i know whether to go buy some new thick shafts so they handle the power..
this is going to be a big project that i am determined to get done no matter what..
im also in a very good chance of getting a new job soo funds wont be a issue like the last projects that failed
wish me luck :thumb:

let_nova

yer but then what am i going to use lol

Edd
26-02-10, 04:18 PM
Good luck with it and all that but,

wouldn't it be a lot less hassel and cheaper just to c20let it ?

Seeing as you will have to pay out for management, engine mount fabrication etc

napalm_27

everyone has said that mate but i just fancy the challenge
if i get a let all iv got to do is take the c20ne out and bolt the let back in.. not much real fun in doing it mate

the mounts etc arnt a issue
the management will be a fair task as its all new to me but i like to learn
once the engine is bolted in on the f16 il look into buying everything
i.e f28/omex600/exhaust system etc etc
hopefully i should have a new job soon aswell
and i think the fact in that im doing these mad projects is the reason why im getting it.. even tho its not mechanical side of cars

burgo
26-02-10, 06:02 PM
lmfao. what a joke. you cant even get a 2L 8v to work properly lol. shall enjoy watching you stuff this up

napalm_27
26-02-10, 06:15 PM
well considering the car is drivable now and works fine i dont see how im going to stuff this up... but your opinion say what you like its only a car at the end of the day..

Edd
26-02-10, 06:34 PM
A c20let on phase 1 or 2 is going to have as much power as a z20leh and cost you £1000's less, I don't see the sense in it, there are reasons why something s are not done this being one of them, it would be easier to put a z20let in also, plus if you are serious are you ACTUALLY going to do it.

napalm_27
26-02-10, 06:45 PM
the engine will be here tomorrow the c20ne will be out sunday/monday ready for the LEH to be trial fitted
i think the best route will be to get the standard engine mount and chop into the chassis and make a more flatter position to mount it onto
then just use the normal f28 mounts to fit the rest
sounds rather simple me writing it on here actually

auzzy2000
26-02-10, 07:10 PM

26-02-10, 07:19 PM
well the astra coupe is getting swapped for the vxr lump as i really cant be arsed with that no more.. tbh i cant be arsed with much atm the nova is the only thing that gets my attention

napalm_27
27-02-10, 11:49 PM
well the astra has now gone.. and i now have the vxr engine :D
list of problems that iv found that need to be over come..
1. throttle body.. god damn electronic throttle body!
2. engine mount
prob more to come will find out as i move along in the project

napalm_27
28-02-10, 02:59 PM
got the engine :) :thumb:
now just need to start taking the c20ne out the nova and bolt the f16 to it and mock up and make the area for the drivers side mount as my plan looks like it will work

how ever long has that been sitting about ^ ?

napalm_27
01-03-10, 11:42 AM
not that long was in a vxr with a rear end shunt
engine was taken out and then put in mates unit as he was going to convert his astra coupe turbo to a z20leh

oh and just found some good news out :) it has the holes for the big block conversion mount so im going to use that instead of chopping into the nova's chassis

djbrowney

well been down with the mondeo today taking the last few bits off
so once thats out the way (hopefully tomorrow) im going to start taking the c20ne out the nova and get the vxr lump to the yard
iv been told the x20xev t/b will fit the manifold but i wont to make the v6 one fit as iv gone and bought it off ebay already
main issue is going to be wiring it into the car as im going to get lost and confused alot on some bits
but its all more that il be learning :thumb:

well iv got the engine all stripped of the un used parts and im taking the c20ne out this weekend and then swapping the pulleys over and taking the dual mass flywheel off and then just going to bolt the f16 to it and trial fit it in the bay
then going to go from there really and start buying stuff as i sell the old bits :thumb:

If you get rid of the Vxr turbo unit, which I presume you are removing because of the boost solinoid and you're changing the inlet to a v6, and you're not using the M32 gearbox there's not much left to call it a Vxr is there ? lol

flol you really are special...

the internals of the z20leh and the x20xev are alot different, the leh has oilspray nozzles, low comp forged pistons and a stiffer crank. the head proting is slightly different too. your comment above is like saying its not a c20xe anymore cos you have fitted bodies. oh and a gearbox hardly makes an engine. hence it being called a gearbox...

i am fully aware of the internals of a z20leh mearly stating that if your installing this lump it would be better to keep all the vxr parts, or at least have it looking like one.

what, the std restrictive inlet, stock restrictive siemens management that needs the clocks and radio, and the std crap turbo?:roll:

the parts naths on about fitting will help get more power, and remove a few restrictions. i suggest you have a better look at the std z20leh/t manifold flow charachteristics, and the throttle body too. i personally would fit a sr20 style inlet, and an equal length exhaust manifold, seen as the std cast job is short on certain ports leading to issues. :thumb:

napalm_27
08-03-10, 12:13 PM
well really need to find a suitable turbo for the engine
and then was going to buy a 200sx manifold and fit a flange to it to put it on the engine
but not sure what to look for in terms of the sr20 inlet

good luck with this. fitting it will be the easy partlol if you go for aftermarket managment it will be alot easier to get going. best of luck

iv decided to just get megasquirt for it as its not as expensive as omex but practically does the same job of getting it going

on another note, this thing is fukcing shocking. ****ty wheels are totaly wrong offset. gammy color coded sideskirts. gte bumpers? no vinyl no window surounds, a mesh grill? shonky stance. its just all wrong. eve if you do fit gsi bumpers itll look shocking. it need some black to break up the white.

So an f16 bolts streight upto the z20leh engine?

And a c20xe mounts bolts streight into the engines front side?

So all it needs is wiring, then its good to go?

Or am I jumping the gun?

Premature ejaculation FTL:(

napalm_27
11-03-10, 06:19 PM
just like fitting a big block into any nova really
but i wouldnt advice bolting a f16 on it to actually run it i was just going to use that to trial fit it before i got the f28 but its looking like the c20ne and f16 are going this weekend so il be looking to buy a f28 abit sooner :thumb:

MattBrown
11-03-10, 06:22 PM
So why not use the f16 and the mounts untill it actually runs pal?

I was looking at a vxr conversion, as can get more power for less money than crazy priced 100k mile c20lets!

napalm_27
11-03-10, 06:24 PM
well i was planning to mate which was the main idea but bloke come down today to have a look at the engine and is coming for it this weekend so i wont have the f16 to bolt it in with so id rather go out and buy a f28 and mount it all in there properly and not have to worry about taking it all back out
will just need to cut the old normal mount out for the gear box and weld the f28 one in

napalm_27
13-03-10, 08:17 PM
well went and picked me up a f28 today
so will be going to play with the nova for abit tomorrow :thumb:

what clutch you planning on running ???

napalm_27
13-03-10, 09:22 PM
ermm was thinking a c20let/z20let clutch or a 4 paddle clutch but not sure yet need to get it in and running first then i can start to think about driving issues :thumb:

djbrowney
13-03-10, 09:35 PM
erm you need to sort a clutch as it wont be driving anywhere lol lol lol

napalm_27
19-03-10, 01:13 PM
yes browney i know where you coming from but im going to worry about that when it comes to actually properly fitting it in.

just a quick update of how things went yesterday with fitting the gearbox and then trial fitting the engine to see how it would fit
looks like it will sit exactly the same as a xe only issues atm is the gearbox as im going to have to cut the old mount out and weld the f28 conversion mount in
and then drill and tap the rear mount bolt holes and convert it to 2wd which should be a barrel of laughs
but anyway enough talk and pic time :thumb:

the turbo has been bolted on it up until recently so the valves havn seen rain
plus its been under a plastic sheet since iv had it and now its in the engine bay

Angus Closier
22-03-10, 08:34 PM
yeah but rain doesnt turn valves that colour? Running antilag or lean might though? Have you ever seen the engine run or inspected it? Might be worth looking into it? I may be wrong!

napalm_27
22-03-10, 08:50 PM
turns over fine keep turning it over everytime i go do stuff with the car
timing marks line up aswell
may strip it all done and rebuild it before i run it aswell
but its only done 15k miles so cant be much wrong with it

Angus Closier
22-03-10, 11:25 PM
No harm in pulling the sump off and checking the bearings? Personally i would strip the whole thing down and just do the main things? That way you dont have to go pulling things apart when/if it goes wrong? Sitting that long, surely a strip down and rebuild with rings, cambelt, big and main bearings? that way your safe? Only what i would do? looks good though.

muzzy
22-03-10, 11:36 PM
Got to agree with the above, I would be looking inside the engine to see what condition everything is in, don't want to end up doing all the work and end up with a duff engine. I would be taking the head off and doing the head gasket, especially if its been sitting outside for a period of time.

napalm_27
22-03-10, 11:47 PM
well i think the crank seal has popped as it pissed all the oil out whe i was trial fitting it as i had the gearbox end right down and the other end up in the air so may get a full gasket set and cambelt set and do the lot at the same time
may change the valves aswell

Connor
22-03-10, 11:49 PM
but its only done 15k miles so cant be much wrong with it

out of interest where did you get this engine

Angus Closier
22-03-10, 11:50 PM
I know i keep ranting on about it but im sure the weather (plus you say they havnt been out in the rain etc) doesnt do that to valves? me thinks you might have a problem on your hands....plus if its just coked up you might want to get new valves clean the old ones/ports up a bit? A minor rebuild doesnt cost the world and will save the money in time....

napalm_27
23-03-10, 12:07 AM
i can get all the parts out my old work at warehouse price so will cost me under £100

and tbh i just want to get the engine in and sorted so i can take it out and then do stuff and be able to bolt it straight back in :thumb:

What coil are you using? if it's not a GTE/GSi item then thats a reason?

napalm_27
10-05-10, 10:20 PM
its the c20let coil that im using exactly the same as what nobby was using on his
the plugs arnt soaking wet either but i can smell fuel when the plugs are out
so not sure if theres enough fuel either
but if i can get it running during the week dom might be popping down again to give me a hand :thumb:

napalm_27
24-05-10, 05:37 PM
well iv just aquired myself a nice new welder thats been used once for £40 and its a gas welder :thumb:
so now the engine is coming back out and the f28 is going to be drilled and tapped ready to be fitted into the nova
going to weld the chassis mount on once it arrives
and then buy the 2wd kit and mod the linkage :thumb:
then once the battery tray repair panel arrives il be cutting the scuttle panel/fire wall bit out and then welding all the holes iv poked through up
got a couple bits to sort out at the back end aswell
then going to cut the front lower valance out abit to fit the fmic abit better and weld some mounting point for the oil cooler to sit on nicely so it isnt held on with cable ties no more lol
so once thats all done im building her back up again and making her looks nice
as the main aim was to get it in and running then once i got a welder sort everything out :thumb:
keep an eye out for updates
as Mr. nappy has some go go back in him :thumb:

napalm_27
31-05-10, 04:10 AM
did abit of rust busting earlier :thumb:
not much left to tackle now only a few little bits this was the main wory
oh and it was the first time i used the welder just getting used to it atm its just a cheap and cheerful thing to get the nova finished doesnt like feeding the wire to nicely :(

it does look like you need to weld that in properly chap, can't see that lasting very long the way it is. A continuous weld all the way round the repair would be a good start. :thumb:

Sloth
31-05-10, 09:24 PM
have you plated over the old metal or cut it to the edges? also your welds havent penetrated that fully.

napalm_27
31-05-10, 09:28 PM
the old was cut out as you can see in the pics then i over lapped it abit on the decent old metal and spot welded it all the way round
and it has penertrated as you can see all the welds from under neath the bulk head
im going to change the nipple bit on the torch and grind the welds flat and go over them again and see if it makes a difference to the feed

MattBrown
31-05-10, 09:28 PM
The Weld Is S H I T Full Stop !!!!

lol

Fk welding a mount on like that, that I know has to take 204bhplol

Sloth
31-05-10, 09:31 PM
you need to turn the welder up a little, and up your feed speed and use a zig zag torch movement. do an inch then let it cool, avoids blowing through. also, i would have weld thru primered it before hand.

napalm_27
31-05-10, 09:35 PM
its only a cheepo sip welder high/low setting
i had it on high which is what i used to use the old sip gasless welder on and that use to do well
think i may sell this one and buy a better welder

djbrowney
31-05-10, 09:36 PM
dont sell it just learn how to use !!!

napalm_27
31-05-10, 09:41 PM

Sloth

im self taught with guidance from an uncle and my dad (he used to make ships) but i found that just welding bits of scrap together as practice is the best thing. you do need a better welder, with variable speed feed and power.

i know but il have some decent metal to make the mount out of and it wont be in a tight spot so il get a better weld going

Its not a problem.

But what happens if your driving along do 69mph, wish to accelerate to 70, the mount snaps, and you crash?

And hurt someone? your mrs (if have one) etc

Safety is paramount:thumb:
