be fooking hard to insure as a 1.2 lol
its a 1.4 sr shell
if i cant insure it i wont drive it simple
it goes out the yard into the pub carpark literally outside the gate and back in and thats as far as it goes atm wont take it no further due to the fact of learning my lesson the last time once being banned for 6 months :(
90amp?? I welding my strengthening kit in with a 90 amp welder.
And my alternator recess which was 2.5mm thick. No problems at all.You just need to learn to use it properly end of.And colossal LOLS at closing your eyes and looking away.
my welder is only a 90amp!
this is 3mm thick

Welding a bloody bit of 3MM plate onto the bottom arms is one of the worst things you can do
djbrowney
04-06-10, 09:32 PM
why ???
Because when you total your car it bends the arm mounts as well, whoop fe fooking do imo. I'd rather a) not crash it in the first place because my bottom arm is actually tracking in the right direction rather than flailing about like a fish out of water and b) not care that should I crash I can't boast that despite the fact the car is bent to buggery, the lower arm mounts are still straight as a die.
napalm_27
04-06-10, 11:50 PM
well the box is now drill and tapped :thumb:
all lines up and bolts up nicely :)
got the front gear box mount off aswell
all i need is the 2wd kit and a new clutch and she will be ready to mot once the engine is back in..
P.S do not work on a car in direct sunlight with no shirt and trackies rolled up
my back is now looking like a lobster :(

Yeah the man above's got the jist ~ no one plans to put the thing up a curb, but like some here too, I've done it & would rather just replace the arm that's DESIGNED to be a weak link.
If you did insist on strengthening then 1MM would be enough imo; what you should be doing however, is making up some bomb proof tie bars with rod ends to give you the complete control you're after.

so why did vauxhall decided to put them on the corsa/tigra, they didnt put them there to look pretty did they ???

^^ that is true. ive use the lazer cut plate for mine.

How many other 'weak links' do you think you take out when building a track car? No one seems to seam weld up the front end and fit a cage and then go oh no that's gonna pass load through the shell if I crash, better take it out, yet its suddenly an issue when you're removing flex from one of the vital suspension components? Unless you're going to stiffen everything in the chain may as well not bother in the first place.
and you better not even consider putting coilovers on it because they might bend the strut tops if you hit a bump too quick!

 there not DESIGNED to be weak, or a weak link. as said if this was the case the corsa and tigra wouldnt come with them.
the arm that's DESIGNED to be a weak link.
Its not designed to be a weak link at all, its just a sufficient lower arm for a car designed to take up to 100bhp. When you start doubling the power, it is no longer sufficient, as are other aspects of the front suspension. And as previously mentioned quite correctly, it was made standard on Corsa B's, probably to compensate for the marginal extra weight and the more powerful engines.

dont lie lee, thats all crap. vauxhall knew from day one that novas would be fitted with speedlines and XE's

In an accident those bottom arms ARE designed to be the bit that bends & made to be cheap, easy & quick to replace.
I stand by exactly what I said & why - you don't need 3MM plate boxing the thing out to get the control we all want. if you're going that route then bushes not rose joints are allowing more movement.

They were indeed designed to bend on impact before damage to structural parts happened. Designed to absorb impact. They are shown in some Vauxhall diagrams as part of the safety features of the shells I believe/crumple zone because obviously the idea is they bend before the passenger compartment gets damaged.
But track situations/higher bhp applications can mean that they are no longer strong enough to cope and may distort etc so its well worthwhile strengthening them.

no need to comment about the state of the front lower valence its being chopper out and replaced once iv got some box section to put in it.. i sorted the welder out aswell so now get decent welds going :thumb:
got the f28 all mounted up and the front mount welded on after struggling for the first part with the welder being gay till i sorted the feed issue :)

napalm_27

if you read the earlier pic and the comment i made
burgo told me not to do the cross member till he come down with his welder as mine wasnt workin properly at the time
but now the welder is ok im going to chop it out weld a bit of box section in there and then plate over any holes left with 4mm steel to stop it from flexing to much
Childish Bump for the day.
Has there been any more explosions going on in your engine bay?

Err excuse me Mr facepalm, why is your engine on the piss, its off to one side and wonky, did you utilise the 'fisher price, my first mount kit' on there?
scott.parker
19-06-10, 10:01 PM
Im no expert (well not in your field anyway) but i think thats slightly bodged together and is doomed to be very unsafe and not very nice to drive, im not being funny when i say this, just saying what i think of how it looks to been built, if i was you i would get some down who knows what there doing to look it over before you go thrashing it mate.
Scott
gallon of petrol and a match is what it needs mate....mind take the engine out first thoughlol
napalm_27
20-06-10, 03:51 AM
i know its all your opinions but none of you have seen it in the flesh so please dont under estimate my work the engine is in there and iv taken it out the yard
its not jumped out the bay
and it hasnt broke anything
im not stupid enough to build a car and drive it if it will kill me ( not from my driving btw )
iv gone over it loads of times and had doubts in some area's but put them to rest from checking them over and over again
yer the engine looks on the piss and before you said about it even i thought it but its were its on standard rubber mounts and has dropped the way it has nothing i can do about it really unless i completely remove every mount and re weld them in different places
yer my welding was **** at first half to do with me not used to the welder the other to do with the welder
but tbh i really couldnt give a ****e what you views are on anything unless helpful in anyway :thumb: thats all really
sorry to jump on the band wagon but it does look a mess mate.

yer get what your saying mate it is a right state but its in there with no issues
the tidying up will happen when i get the money to do it
not like it takes weeks to take a engine out wash and degrease the bay then spray it
il do it in my own time when i cba
its not going anywere like i said before
