right well actually this thread isnt about doing the job if it has gone as im a mechanic and looks a simple enough job. my question is what do you think about just sticking a head gasket water pump and cambelt on it maybe thermostat aswell, and not having the cylinder head pressure tested and skimmed? the reason i ask is because i only need the engine to last another 6 - 12 months then im going to sell my bmw and buy a Vxr astra and the nova can then become my project. and part of the project is an xe/let engine.

Yeah that sounds about right, the parts are cheap enough and ive never had a vauxhall cylinder head fail a crack test, just give it all a good clean.

cool thats what i wanted to know really wether or not they are prone to cracking/porous like a redtop are. its probably just the gasket anyway coz its only done 60,000 miles so probably never had one done.

its not too bad yet anyway just noticed the coolant bottle was nearly empty and had emulisfied in the oil filler cap, but not missing yet but might just do it anyway.

Gasket shouldnt go after 60k to be fair - of course its probably done 160k...

;)

Just whack a new gasket on there - will be fine.

Nah their pretty strong engines partly because in standard form they are very very restricted so even when you hammer them you're not really hammering them. ive seen head gaskets go at 10,000 and 110,000 its luck of the draw.
