View Full Version : New Project - Nova Saloon Smoker
Recently purchased this from Jamie 16v off here on a bit of an impulse buy.Gonna use it as an everyday smoker to keep the miles of the S2000
There is another project thread on here somewhere when it was purchased and subsequently painted in this delightful beige colour!

He had fitted new GM rear quarters for no reason, lol – as they were very good beforehand. Not that I am complaining, this genuine 29000 mile shell is a REALLY good one! No rust to be found anywhere which is nice.
The beige isn’t a bad job either, although the doors are a slightly different shade, not that I’m bothered as its going in for a re spray in a few weeks to get the colour sorted out.
Engine bay welding is its show piece though – really, really good stitch weld and HH plate kit fitting job indeed. I don’t have any pics though just now!
Engine is also fitted very well, brand new fitting kit and shafts etc and runs spot on – although I discovered that there is THE BIGGEST oil leak in the world and it cant be driven until its sorted – looks like rear crank seal! Not the nicest job, but have a genuine one to go on this week…
Anyway – onto this weekends work…
This is what I needed to do firstly – fit Bilstein B10 tarmac suspension and fit poly bushes throughout…
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0047.jpg
Didn’t take long…
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0055.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0054.jpg
Then fitted Corsa B Epas… Works very well and have fitted on-dash adjustment for when I feel really girly! Lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0051.jpg
Purchased an early SR brown interior, with dash, seats and door cards and early orange clocks….But realised that the rear seats are totally different, so it was off to a local retrimmer to get the rear seats professionally retrimmed in the SR fabric – he also repaired the bolster which had JUST worn through…
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0058.jpg
Found some Infinity speakers from a project about 10 years ago that fit snugly into the original mounting points…
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0056.jpg
Dash in…. with clocks - cowling wasnt easy - so I just hacked it to get it on - I will sort this out next week...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0057.jpg
Rear seats…. And fitted, with door cards
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0065.jpg
Front wheels trial fitted… well I had to lol!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/Photo0066.jpg
All that’s left is to fit the front seats, rear shocks, sort oil leak out and get it to the paint shop! (and get it MOT’d)
Enjoy! lol
are you not keeping it in the creamy colour? Looks awesome though, especially with the ronals

Already failed really - havent I!? lol
Cheers all - trying to make it as modern as poss in terms of driving, whilst keeping it retro looking...
Will add lots of sound deadening, add a reasonable stereo, V6 stoppers and a massive back box to keep it really quiet!
ahh! wondered when this would appear! looking good Will!
I loved this when Jamie had it, revs really well with the lightened flywheel, was waiting for the wip to be started when he said you'd bought it Will

09-11-09, 10:31 PM
yes revs really well, no hesitation should be fun on the road :)
Funny you say that - it was the first thing I noticed too - never seen a standard XE rev so freely, even when you snap it open it doesnt bog down at all!
I will get my proper camera on the go, my camera on my phone is poop when there is no light!
Are all xe's with lightened flywheels the same or is it unique?
discoinferno
09-11-09, 11:00 PM
is it a billet flywheel from ttv racing?
I would have bought this if I had the money, its just like mine but with a boot! lol. Please keep the colour, looked really good when it was lowered on the mo's before. ;-)

saloons are the future!
i don't think its purely down to the flywheel. a lot of the Xes i have owned tend to bog down even a bit when you snap the throttle open from cold. unless of course the fly weighs about Bm ounce. lol
looks mint will :thumb:
Cheers Carl - just a shame the camera was pap lol
How long till it gets bodies or a let Will? lol
How long till it gets bodies or a let Will? lol
Nah - it needs to be relatively 'refined', so if anything it will be a LET....
lol
Things bought this week to be fitted:
New Alarm (RCL)
Oil pressure sender
GM flaps (snigger)
Alarm will be my first proper installation - so that should be fun - looks easy enough though.

Wish I went down this route with my saloon , I'm now "propa" jealous and kicking myself lol !!
Looks absolutely sweet with the SR seats and brown dash going in.

13-11-09, 10:49 AM
Very nice - subtle too
Cheers all - its staying beige - but either Parchment or Gazelle (GM colours)
That way - I wont have to go bare shell, as the colours are very similar indeed!
Craig - I got a 1400 air box instead... I will make it fit!
;)
Are you trying to fit the airbox with the XE, No chance lol, Adam tried lol
How rude of me though, Car looks good, plans sound good. :)
Mines gazelle beige apparently and it looks very similar to yours will, also im not sure a bout the airbox idea. I thought a nova gte airbox would fit in my 2.0 8v engine bay, but its just slightly too big!!
I will MAKE a box that fits! lol
I fitted one a few years ago to my black GTE - that was a 1.6 one too - so a bit bigger I think?
Its my misison - refuse to fit a cone filter!lol
craig green
13-11-09, 05:32 PM
How about a tea strainer? lol
It might fit, but was never going to work with my C16XE & Mantzel. I wasnt prepared to hack it up what with paying £40 for a new (2nd hand) one & them being rareish.lol

Mine was £8,so I wont feel guilty!
What is the issue? Does it foul the cambelt cover?
Mine fouled the cambelt cover iirc, and the inlet hose would have been all squashed up lol but maybe a bit different with the xe in there.
craig green
13-11-09, 05:37 PM
The outlet pipe (to TB) was at totally the wrong angle to meet the inlet & was too close to the turret.
As said, that was with a Mantzel on my 16XE.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c323/turbocraig/NovaGSi-WIP_pics/NOVAFEATURES002.jpg
I will have a play! I will cut the outlet on the box and re-position if I have to!
;)
Good luck lol
I want a standard airbox but no chance, been using a cut about corsa one.
That looks alright without the TB on it craig lol Full-time WOT may be the way forward? lol
craig green
13-11-09, 06:28 PM
With the TB on, they were totally mis-aligned. And I can now recall the rear of the cambelt cover was fouling too. But this is Will's 2.0, so I'll shut up.
welcome to the dark side :) you do realise you are now gonna love saloons and see that hatchbacks are inferior
welcome to the dark side :) you do realise you are now gonna love saloons and see that hatchbacks are inferior
lol
I dunno if I would go that far! I am def appreciating them now though. I used to dislike them with a passion!:)
Spent most of today on it and managed to get the following done..
Fitted new Toad Ai606 from Mr Beverly - cheers mate - it all works, just need to wire a relay in to get the C/L to work properly.
Fitted the rear Billies
Fitted new oil pressure sender
Realised alternator wasnt wired up properly, so did that
Fixed temp gauge not working
Will be going back tomorrow to be proven right about that fecking airbox!lol
OK, so today was mainly taken up by trying to get the RCL working!
But I also managed to get the nova airbox in there - was a nightmare!lol
I was going trim-crazy with the plastic edges - then though f*ck it and cut a chunk out of the wing!:d
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon002.jpg
Covered all exposed metal with red oxide and will get pro-painted when it goes to the body shop....
Also covered the sharp endges with a rubber seal off a spare XE I have in the garage!;)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon009.jpg
Done!
Secured the siren for the alarm....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon010.jpg
wedged a stereo in the hole....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon015.jpg
Fitted a show winning ICE install....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon007.jpg
Secured the front seats, so can be moved around the garage...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon012.jpg
Overall I am quite happy with the seats - the drivers bolster isnt as bad as I thought!
Will what's wrong with a cone filter? lol

I prefer the noise (or lack of) with an air box on.... I am sure it will annoy me in the end and I fit a MASSIVE dustbin-like universal bad boy off ebay though...
lol
Very very nice Will!
I have a couple of spare Corsa Columns, how hard was it to fit?
Very very nice Will!
I have a couple of spare Corsa Columns, how hard was it to fit?
Easy - but I did find out the hard way that you need to space the column down about an inch on teh Nova mounts... I found out after I fitted the dash back in! lol
You need to make a mount for the rear of the column too - but thats easy enough...

lol Fancy doing another?
Happy to help out mate - really not hard at all
What about the wiring side of things?
Can I just say again after having another look at those pics.....Lovely!
Wiring is three wires dude - you need to get a £12 kit from ebay to get around the speed sensor - but this makes teh wiring even easier tbh...
Tiny update: RCL finally sorted and alarm is fully functional! YAY!
Also being a chav and fitting a few stereo gubbins...
ran 3 RCA/phono leads - main feed from battery and remote wire to run the amps (just for speakers!)
Got the stereo working too and tidied up the wiring....
Bored? lol
hi mate, i've not forgotten about those pics, i'll send em down tonight.

lol
Spent a quick hour on her last night - no pics AGAIN though!
Just mincing with the stereo side of things again anyway - so no one would be interested! lol
Just got my amp mounted and wired in and it worked first time - which is shocking as it was covered in dust and been sat for 9 years! And the fact I could remember how to wire one in! :d
Forgotten how poop the acoustics were in a Nova - especially when I have fitted it! ;)
I will get some pics this week though!

Looking very nice mate, the seats match the lighter coloured interior :)
Cheers - no idea what the interior is out of - I expected the door cards etc to be dark brown... could be a mish mash I spose...
Seems to look OK though.

good work mate, do those wheels fit on the hubs ok, or is there alot of play between the center of the wheel and the hub?
bits in post dude!
Legend - thanks dude!
Floyd - they fit perfectly - I did expect to have to use spigott rings, but didnt have to!
Today has been spent mainly chavving up the stereo still... It took me a while, but got it all wired up - but it sounds pretty flat really...? Spose its due to the boot not being sealed and isnt an 'enclosure' as such...
Anyway - just need to tidy the wiring now....

Lovely car this WillF
i saw this in the flesh the very day Jamie was painting it, very tidy, really suprised he sold it!
love the Ronal Turbos and the Brown SR trim
havent really done a great deal for about a month - just trying to get an exhaust made up for it and then get the tracking done properly, and then an MOT...
Will be on the road in Feb all being well!
Love those wheels and that colour!
Cool mate, reeally looking forward to seeing this all finished :thumb:
Did a tiny bit that turned into a bigger bit - no idea why I am bothering with the stereo stuff - Radio 4 sounds poop through a sub! lol
Fitted the (cracked) plates... will get some decent metal ones for the MOT.

Also ripped out the old sub as the bass was rubbish - bought this boot frame from a member off here for peanuts and its really well made to be fair - just need to stick the carpet etc down...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon031.jpg
Didnt think that the hatch would be totally different to the saloon - but managed to make it look OK ish..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v401/Foy/saloooooon029.jpg
Finally - need to decide what to do about the rear box, need to 'fill' this huge gap. I was thinking of something like the Count's saloon?

Fair enough - I cant really tell the diff with the plate tbh - whats your beef?lol
Yeah - the rear was already cut, so have to make the most of it. It wouldnt be something I wouldve done tbh, but it looks so much better than I thought, so I am happy.

Really?? Its at least 80-90mm on front and it has the shortest springs I have ever seen on the rear 90mm iirc!!
I never used to be a saloon fan either but, ones like this change my mind.

Its the angle of the pics I reckon - the side on view gives a better indication... I cant even get a finger between the wheel and the arch!
Done a bit more ahead of the MOT on Sat - not a massive fan of the valver (256mm) brakes, decided on some 288s with some black diamond disks that I bought from Nobbyz Nova about 2 years ago! lol

lovely looking Nova with a lot of uprated parts :thumb: but if you want to go lower and are brave enough give that rear end some camber and get some stretch tyres on there
or really upset some people and be totally different by been the first person to turn a Nova into a http://www.bosozokustyle.com/ car :wtf: not to the full extreme like most of them but along them lines with the wide arch extensions and a bmw lip spoiler  you already have the retro style back box lol
hmmm think I might go buy a sallon as well lol

Love it Will I can't see much more that needs doing now great motor

just wind the front down and get lower springs for the rear
So the downpipe is on the floor and the rear beam touches the tank??
Seriously - I can maybe go another 20mm, but then we are looking at some serious grindage - the rear springs are bordering on illegal, as they fall out everytime the rear is jacked up - literally 2 coils!!... lol
ah well - I guess its the compromise between looks and practicality!

I love the colour as well

I think it looks great. Only thing you can really do to make it look lower is get rid of the vertical on the arches and flre out maybe? I dunno. Looks top imo.

Looks good as is mate......any lower and you may ruin it....love the colour as well! and the rear box looks ace!
Maybe Hexagonal Steve doesn't mind dragging the bottom of the car over everything. Judging by Wills build standards I'd say he's not up for that, and as he says wrong width/ET wheels that munch bearings for fun.
Awesome motor mate. :)
Cheers matey - I know its all down to personal preference, but I do plan to use every day, so need SOME practicalities!lol

Was going to say thought you bought this to drive from wales to bristol everyday rather than the S2000 you start ****ing around with ride height even more the useability will go out the window!

ive dug mine out and im missing one of the backing plates :/
Hmm - is that a big deal? I may be able to make something! ;)
i was going to just make a carbon backing plate type thing, they serve no purpose other than to tidy it up so i cant see why you couldnt make something. ill dig them out again and take some pics
