When you dismantle the f16 can you tell me what fd it has please.
Tip for ya too, get the f16 diff and put it in a bowl of boiling water to soften the speedo ring up a bit, makes them easier to get off. Same with the f28 one. And be careful putting the f28 back together. Make sure the selector rod ball is in its groove or youll have no gears. Plonk a lump of grease on the two bearings and put them in the case when you put it back on, dont leave them on the main & lay.
Paul
cheers for the info jack and alex about registering it with the dvla
Cheers paul aswell i will be stripping the box's at the weekend hopefully,
How will i know the Final Drive on the box will it be stamped anywhere?
Should have my coilovers sent back to gazz for a rebuild in the next couple of weeks and just ordered two new rose joints for my top mounts
Final drive is the number of teeth on the crownwheel divided by number of teeth on the pinion.
right stripping my F20 now rather than the F16.
Been kicked out of the garage for now which in all fairness is prob a good thing as i have a week off work now so hoping to crack on with it :)
Got bored today and as i cant clear space in the garage until monday for the engine i decided to paint my wheels,

Thinking about chopping the middle of the lower valance out and welding in some box steel.

Update tomorrow
boyd_1989
27-04-11, 02:51 AM
Tragic miles (trago mills) its called van post office red lol
Ment to be working on this today, will hopefully have an update this evening
cheers mate, mite have to get some lol
and good to see your getting to work on this, cant wait till its back out, mine will be MOT'd next thursday :)
Fancy selling me some headlight clips? :d
yea can do mate pm me your address ill get 4 sent up,
Should be out on this today just trying to find somewhere to blast off my crank bolt so i can drop it out and drop the head and block off to the machine shop.
looks like the front skin of your crossmember has seen better days :(
not thinking of fitting another one ?
not at the moment edd its extra money ive not got, and im thinking about cutting the middle right out anyway for the intercooler and welding in some box steel
ahhh right good idea
whats the plan then ? fitted the plating kit and have the bay painted ?
well today im trying to get somewhere to blast of the crank bolt so i can take the oil pump off and strip the block for the machine shop,
Then off to get some metal and hopefully pick up the welder tonight,
So then tomorrows plans will be plate, cut for intercooler and paint only hairy arseholing it thou for now i think
just received these through the post
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0209.jpg
Now all i need to order for the engine is an oil pump seal, water pump and piston rings,
Also can i reuse the crank bolts or shall i just get Gm ones? not getting arps for the crank as thats £100 odd i cant afford
Right got outside this morning and had a quick look over what i already had cut out for the intercooler,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0210.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0211.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0212.jpg
Decided more needed coming out so i did this
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0213.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0214.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0215.jpg
Which left me with a big gaping hole lol in my crossmember,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0218.jpg
Ive cut out as much as i can for the moment, Popped up to B&Q for some box steel, and im hopefully picking up a welder tonight so can get cracking tomorrow,
Seeing as i couldnt cut anymore off the car i cut the bumper backer so that i can fit the intercooler behind the bumper rather than hanging off the front
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0216.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0217.jpg
Seeing as there wasnt much else cutting wise i could do i decided to strip the bottom end and get it up the machine shop,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0219.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0220.jpg
Crank and pistons out
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0221.jpg
then bare block
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0222.jpg
Fitted my xe inlet cam
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0223.jpg
and the oil pump needs a helicoil on one of the pickup bolts
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0224.jpg
Got that dropped off and awaiting its return
What happened to that crossmember? Are the tie bar mounting locations still where they should be? Surely this is an ideal time to replace with a straight one?
the crossmember has been cut for ease of removing the complete engine i think,
I will be using box section instead of the lower crossmember to give room for the intercooler
Not the cutout the fact it looks extremely bent?
yea i see what you mean, i will be filling it after i have made a cut out.
If im not happy with it i will replace it but most probs wont as the bumper hides it for now.
I think the point Iains getting at, is not the way the cross member looks, more the fact of if its still sitting straight. Doesnt look the best, if its the slightest bit rotten id be changing it. A LET batters a Nova shell and its a hell of a common weak point On them.
/\ yes but the middle will be coming out in favor of box section
The lip at the bottom has only been left for strength atm
Hopefully welding will start place tomorrow if i can borrow a welder
Anyway, nice parts follectikn, just a case of putting it back together now!
Lovin the royal mail red wheels, reminds me of maris!
yea thats if i can remember where it all goes lol
Shouldnt be to bad tbh the bit im dreading is stripping the F28 apart to change the speedo rings.
I did think about maris's nova when i bought the red paint, i dont think it stands out to much against the grey thou, was only a quick hairy arsehole over to see if i liked it
Looks brilliant, im a big fan! F28 is tricky, make sure you remember what went where if it all falls to bits!
yea the camera is going to play a big role tomorrow if all goes to pot,
Is it best to stand the gearbox on end ( non flywheel end) when its pulled apart?
Yes, square it up so that it doesnt fall over.
Right seeing as i got the welder today (not sure how long for thou) i thought i would crack on with my front crossmember.
This is how i started this morning
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0225.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0226.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0227.jpg
Right ive never welded before in my life and there was also no one on my street who could push me in the right direction so i thought funk it lets have ago
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0228.jpg
I know thats chicken sh1t, I didnt realise how hard it was
Theres one weld here that i was chuffed with in the middle
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0229.jpg
Couple more just to prove my welding is poop haha
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0230.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0231.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0232.jpg
Made up some brackets for the bottom of the intercooler
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0233.jpg
Held it up in place with some bricks
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0234.jpg
Then mocked up the front end again as i dont want to fix the brackets until i have the engine back to make sure there is all room.
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0235.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0236.jpg
Will be buying a new Gte/Sr front bumper as i wont be needing to cut out as much and it looks gash with that bumper.
Thats all for today
Joe
Bad place to have a "first go" at welding IMO! FMIC should look good tucked behind the bumper tho :)
well im hopefully going to get my mate over to weld the strengthing plates in so im going to get him go over what ive done
Joe I would seriously think about making the box section join the chassis legs on either side, with very good welds with decent penetration
ATM it doesn't look very strong, crossmember needs to be spot on as Paul says
Careful or your going to end up with a napalm special :tard:lol
Angus Closier
28-04-11, 11:08 PM
Really doesnt look too bad for a first attempt, Im glad you had a go yourself and didnt make somone else do it all for you. As said though get somone to have a go and make it a wee bit stronger, would be a shame if it wasnt up to the job after so much time and effort! Keep up the work!
cheers for the comments people :) will get my mate to go over it when he does the plating kit for me,
The that leaves me to split the F28 and fit the speedo ring, its all waiting on the return of the engine
Right another expenditure (Sp?)
The machince shop has told me im going to need new pistons :(
Looking at cosworth forged atm 86.5mm but will lowering the compression ratio to 8:5:1 run on standard management?
not sure mate the ones courtney sport sell
Cosworth 2 ring?
0.7mm upper and U flex ring on the lower by any chance?
If theyre two ring dont bother, id say you be better off with a set of mahles 86.5 with pockets cut into them, just under £500 iirc though.

Produce less power? I've always wondered what the design would be like on an engine that doesn't do over 15k since they obviously don't seal as well. I figured there must be a crossover point where 3 ring setups work better.
right going for 86.5 mm Mahles off steve, Not going to get them Pocketed unless its reckomended(sp?)
Just sent a nice payment over to steve for a few bits so now wait for them to arrive :)
Southie
19-05-11, 08:08 PM
He sounds like the best man for the job :)
Looking forward to you actually enjoying your LET.
yea i know me to southie :thumb:
Hopefully built to last this time, needed the coilovers desperatly(sp?) that have been returned for a revamp :)
And hopefully doesnt go bang lol
Speak to Steve, but id say its worth having them pocketed, makes the CR slightly lower, so youll loose a bit of power, but gain some reliability.
Right working on this again today welding the plates on :)
Will update with pictures this evening, Just stopped to watch qualifing
Right not many pics today as i forgot to take some lol
Started off this morning Stripping back my coilovers ready to be sent for a refurb, There now boxed up ready for post.
I picked my mate up to come weld the plates on for me only got 3 on today.
Here are pics
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0237.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0238.jpg
Forgot to take a pick of the driver's side chassis leg but will next time
Whilst he was doing that i changed my lock's to the new lockset i bought just leaving the ignition to do but i cant get the bloody steering wheel off lol :(
Then i set about changing the speedo ring over in the f28
Split the box
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0239.jpg
Then i dunked the f20 Diff into boiling water to help remove the ring without damaging it. and cut the one off the F28
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0270.jpg
Then i put the box back together and tidyed up then got on ebay and ordered up some silicone boost hoses, not alot just for the intercooler so i can see if i can run the pipes like i wanted to with the engine back in,
Oh and a Alloy rad with 10" slimline fan :) is on its way to me
Joe
Right had a crack again at this this morning
I started off with the grinder with a wire wheel attachment to attact the areas where the rest of the plates need to go.
Big plate on chassis leg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0273.jpg
then cleaned up the crossmember for the plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0274.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0275.jpg
Did the same to the other side of the crossmember aswell
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0279.jpg
Then was underneath the car for the other plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0280.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0281.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0282.jpg
whilst i was doing that i had a visit from the postman with my alloy rad and also some silicone hoses
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0278.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0277.jpg
Thought i would compare intercooler to rad
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0276.jpg
Its nearly bigger than the rad haha, Think i should have got a smaller intercooler tbh
So then my mate turns up with the welding mask so made a start on the welding
Gearbox side chassis plate on
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0287.jpg
Then the ones under the car tacked in
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0290.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0291.jpg
i then attacked one of the tiebar plates
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0289.jpg
Then ran out of welding wire, so will have to carry on with them tomorrow and get them finished off.
So seeing as i was waiting for jack to turn up i thought i may aswell do some other little bits and peices as i ran out of welding wire
I changed my funked rose joints in my top mounts for lovely new ones
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0283.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0284.jpg
Some more pics of new bits ive been ordering,
Thanks to Sr Jack for my equal length drive shaft setup
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0285.jpg
Just need to get the cv's ordered up, so if anyone knows what ones im after give me some part numbers or models
ordered a new rear gearbox spacer kit from ebay (Yeltsa - which i do belive is chris astley selling bits and bobs again)
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0286.jpg
Then jack arrived with some goodies for me, couldnt resist chucking them on
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0292.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0293.jpg
Would like to thank jack alot for sorting me out them bits :thumb:
And also thank colin (novarally) for dragging a gte bumper to Nats
Cheers Joe
Looks more like a car now. Bonus on the bumper being the right colour too lol
yea i was quite shocked it was the same color as the car already, almost ashame its got damage on it otherwise i would have left it.
I reckon a quick flick over with a rattle can should be enough to cover up some of the scrapes, won't need primering
going to get the front end repainted i thinks as i need the engine bay doing now after i attacked it with a welder haha
Right seeing as i was off work for the day i thought i would crack on and get something done to my car.
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0299.jpg
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0295.jpg

heres all the space i have

02-06-11, 09:39 PM
looks good mate when you getting an engine in her ?:)
well the engine is at the machine shops waiting for my to get my pistons,
Which im still waiting for :( hopefully turn up this week so i can get it back together
scott.parker
02-06-11, 10:09 PM
Why would you need to mod the intercooler?
looks ok to me, i would of just lobed them too tabs of by the lights my self..
And i do have to say it's a nice build your doing now mate, and it seams your throwing some dosh at it alright..
Scott
yea i am unfortunally lol
Just want it to last so trying to do everything at once sort of thing.
I want them tabs to keep the standard grill, also the silicone boost hoses i have are way to large, ill get some pics tomorrow of what i mean
scott.parker
02-06-11, 10:24 PM
Get some tight angled 90deg ally bends and get them welded onto the cooler outlets so your pipes are starting in the bay??
yea thats what i was planning on doing :thumb:
Almost the same ic i have (yours is a bit higher) i had an "elbow" welded on to mine to clear the F28 mount,
Love the ic hidden behind the bumper, looks perfect!
Love it!
cheers benn :)
i much prefer the hidden ic compared to sticking right out,
Think im going to borrow your idea of having the Chav valve on the intercooler aswell
lol It seems to work well, get a nice tight bend welded on. That's what i wanted but he boxed it off which i know isn't ideal, bit its on and works.
On the drivers side you could have the pipe cut and moved so it points in to the bay and is just above the cross member, then you only need a small pipe from turbo outlet to ic...
im going to wait and see what its all like with the engine in and work out what needs doing then,
At the moment it just looks like i need 2 right angles welded onto the intercooler and all should be alright then
Cool cool. Just watch the rad to turbo.. Mine was a bit too close.
yea looking at mine its going to be close,
http://i706.photobucket.com/albums/ww64/gsi_jimbo/IMGP0297.jpg
Still got to get a fan on the back of the rad aswell :(
You should buy my bumper, better air flow to the intercooler ;)
Actually just buy the IC and boost pipes too lol
I'll take phase 2 off your hands :thumb:
i havent cut any out of this bumper as i want the sleeper look,
You don't want ph2 anyway, way too fast lol
And imo no point having an intercooler if no air or very little air is getting to it.
i reckon there will be plenty off cooling, the rad fan will be sucking air through it aswell
If its that bad ill get another bumper to reveil the ic.
I do want phase 2 lol swap ecu's :p
I don't know if you knew this but ph1 and ph2 run the same amount of boost anyway (0.95 bar)

Really why the up in power them it goes from 240 to 280ish depending on what else is done,
I want just under 300 and ill be happy
Agree with the above! LET Novas are so fast they're almost un-drivable

Humm, if I'm honest here, i don't see anything over 210-220bhp from ff in a nova being worth doing/having, as it's bad enough to keep grip to get usable power with 185bhp lol
Exactly, unless its a drag car of course.
Non of the power LET offers can be used in a corner.
/\ that doesnt matter all helps on the straights :)

well ive sorted out the bay loom today, ran the light wires under the wings, so the looms hidden as much as i could for now, Got to get the engine cleaned up and then sort the loom out on that yet to make it neat and tidy,
The the internal wiring, im going to be moving the Fusebox to the glove box, then if i decide i want power steering there will be loads of room as if i remember correctly its tight,
Well heres what ive done so far,

Bay looks good
What's with the red wings and bonnet tho?
cant afford paint at the moment to do wings and bonnet, and its all got to be ready and working before the 26th of the month, so engine back in and wiring is more important than paint,
Red wings have gone on cause they havent got indicators or an aerial hole, and there in better condition than my grey ones
Would the driver side cooler pipe not work much better if it went in from the bottom?

Did u have to extend many wires to get fuse box to glovebox!???
Benn i wont want pipes running under the cross member, It probs would work better mind might have a look into it, I do always pop the bottom boost hose off the turbo while abusing it at combe mind,
Gaz thats todays job so ill let you know how it goes, i guess so far moving the fusebox is shortening most wires, only extending dash wires back over
No, at the bottom of the cooler but over the top of the cross member.
Sorry benn having trouble making out what you mean, Will have a look see if i can route them abit better,
Heres what ive done today anyway

Well is been a while since I've posted in this thread,
car was built and used, now in the position to get a cage but don't want to put it in a sunroof shell which mine is, so waiting on an email at the moment and hopefully will get my hands on a new shell with cage already :)
so this year will be the year of the reshell :) will keep me out of trouble and finally I may own a nova that looks respectable haha, may start a new thread once I've got it/ if I get it for the swap.
looking quite excited lol like a kid at Christmas, everyone's got to love a tax rebate :)
