so what are these dampeners your all talking about lol
Dampers = shock absorbers

Problem will be the standard dampers have a much longer travel than the rebound of the spring, so if weight comes off the wheels (e.g. over a bump) the spring could fall out or become dislodged. Not to mention it popping the dampers and giving crap rebound rates lol

knock up some solid bars that are super short and just bolt em to the strut tops and the hubs. job done. cos it aint gonna bounce like that..... i do know of a lad who took the shocks off, and got a machine shop to cut 2 inches off the top end of the rod, and re thread it. cheap short shocks.

WTF???? If anything, that will make the problem worse!! The issue is with the body if the shock being too tall which means it comes up and meets the strut top. Shortening the piston rather than the body will only mean the spring wont dislodge when the weight is taken off the wheel. You dont half know some monkeys!!!!

A shortened shock has a shortened body with a slightly shorter piston.

Right not an update but after some feed back.

I have a e16se sat in my garage, im waiting for my insurance to drop before i stick it in so i can declare everything.

What route to go down though?

Turbo or Carbs and cam?

Ive seen a few turbo setups pop up now and again from £200-£500 and was thinking about it but im not sure will suit the car TBH.

Carbs and cam, Headwork etc, etc was my orignal plan, Gain as much N/a power from the little 1.6 :)

Anyone else got opinions or reckomendations(sp?)?

MK999
20-11-09, 08:15 PM
Turbo set ups are not everything you need to run it usually, it's just literally the turbo, on top of that you need to sort the fuelling in some way, as well as some increased engine monitoring so you don't run it with oil pressure problems, turbo issues etc that eventually kill it. You also need to prepare the engine, chucking it into something with worn rings and leaky valves is not going to work well, and you also need to take the compression into consideration.

It's often a good way to start it, but it's the first £200 of many you'll spend.

Plug
20-11-09, 08:18 PM
yea i know that was hoping to get some twin 40ies, still not 100% on how i would run them, not done any research yet as im just starting to collect bits together and rebuild the engine over the next year or two.

Im thinking as its for the old B reg to make as much BHP out of the e16se N/a

been doing a little reasearch over the past hours with alot of help from comptonCJ.

I Know i need a 1.2/1.3/1.4 Dizzy and Coil, alternator lowering bracket and the correct jets in the carbs :)

im now, after a little research on the internet going for Twin 40's, big valve flowed head, Kent Ast 2 or NV038 cam, Arp bolts, 4-1 mani fold with an ashley system.

Not sure other than bolts what i can do to the bottom end apart from the lightened and balanced flywheel and crank shaft.

The little 993cc engine decided it didnt want to go on any more today so after a recovery service home i decided to take it out.

As far as i know the bottom end has gone and ran out of oil and seised :(

So work started got the old engine out and thought i would chuck in the spare e16se in. as theres a few bits missing i but the box in and the shafts.

Need to get some gearbox bolts and starter motor then i can put the block and inlets in.

Im going to have to buy an exhaust system, fuel pump and tank and lines.

other than that i think im good to go. been told by my old dear to get the engine in and running before ringing insurance so thats what im going to do.

next plan of action was to remove the F20 and fit the F28 so i can get the mount welded on

The new gearbox

Right the next of my problems is the fact that the rear engine mount wont bolt on,

I know the holes which need tapping but have never done it so anyone got any tips?

Got the engine up into place with f28 bolted on ready to tack the new mount into place

Me being me didnt realise i needed a differant mount :( and couldnt find one laying around the garage where the car is so i will raid my garage at home for a solid mount i got off edd.

Next day of attack is wednesday so i will sort the camera out for then

Right all you pic lovers im afraid to say i havent got any :( my mates took his camera back.

But ive had another night on it :)

Ive got the f28 mount tacked in place and i took the head off to check the bores which are f*cked well iirc shiney like a mirror means ****ed lol

so now im going to have to get the block honed and replace the rings and all the bearings :( more money.

Saturday is my next day so im hoping to get the camera sorted for then

Right another day well half on this, but most of it was spent cleaning the garage as it was chaos lol

Pics will come but not today as its my mates camera and ive got to show him how to upload them, etc

i took the brake lines off unbent and only had to cut one flexi so braided are going to have to be ordered up.

Dropped the engine back out of the bay and am awaiting an engine stand to strip the last couple of bits off then its going to be stripped and sent off to the machine shop for honeing.

also found out my block isnt a let its a converted xe :(

So how would i go about telling the Dvla its a let as i need the engine number

They won't give a toss what engine code it is, just the engine has the right capacity (1998) and engine number. As its a 2.0 already, you don't need to change the engine capacity, just the number.

The only time having the wrong number on there may be an issue is if someone has to check the car over for whatever reason.
