Odd story, i was being towed by a scooter a while ago, decided to try stop him, managed it but ended up with a very warped disk and just haven't bothered to replace it as i got a motorbike soon after.

Sorry i missed that part out!
Its a 1994 Fat Chance Shock-A-Billy, back in the day the frame and AMP rear end cost £1370!
Its been sat for the last 12-15 years and needs a good clean up, frame restoration and the seatpost removing from the frame (its pretty stuck at the moment!).
Rick that's very nice
Ringlé seat post and stem
Rest of it looks trick as well
Rick thats awesome, what else is in your collection then, ive seen your Zaskar on retro bike which looks mint:d
Btw plusgas is your friend for unsticking seat posts that have bonded into the frame!

Thanks guys, its going to cost a fair bit and take a while to sort out as i know what parts i want and i know the standard i want it to be.
Just got this, a 1997 GT Zaskar (still not rebuilt it, its getting closer though!), 2011 Giant Anthem X1, a 2010 Santa Cruz Blur LTc, Felt F3 SL and a Ribble winter bike.
My new bike!:d:d:d:d Loving having loads of suspension travel to play with!

lollollollollol
Its mainly for downhill freeride use, but its not that bad pedalling it uphill. Ok so its not going to win any xc marathon races but its way more fun on the downhill bits!:thumb:
that looks EPICLY fun...i too like travel. i got 150mm bomber 66s on a street/dirt frame lmao
Just bought this.. to nick bits off then put some old bits back on and sell back on. Only wanted it for the 150mm adjustable pikes lol

Just added another 2 bits of retro to my collection, a 1994 (iirc) Orange Clockwork frame that's in need of a full restoration and the best one yet a 1995 Fat Chance Shock a Billy prototype that was built for someone to compete in the 1995 downhill world championships in Vail Colorado. That comes with the original receipt of sale as well which is pretty cool.

Any pics of the shock-a-billy Rick, you posted it on RR?
Ive now got three Kona's, a 98 caldera, a 93 Lava Dome and a 94 Lava Dome frameset :d
built up a custom kinesis maxlight XC130 a few weeks ago for competing in enduro and XC
130mm rockshox tora's, fancy some duel air rockshox SID's but the bikes cost me enough this month lol.
hope pro 2 hubs with 34mm octane one rims.
sram X9 1x9 groupset.
nukeproof proton pedals,
and finishing kit from Tioga and raceface.
just converted to running 2.3 continental barons tubeless yesterday as well :)
None of that makes any sense to me lmfao lol

Still means nowt to me, my knowledge of bikes is in the '90s, shimano groupsets, rockshox forks, tioga tyres, dcd's tektro brake boosters, that kind of thing lol

Only seen one other of these up for sale and it went for $1100 recently. Quite a interesting story with this one as well.
Will get some better pictures of it when it arrives but I already have some decent bits to fit on it as I want to use it a bit.
currently looking for a specialized sx trail or maybe something similar so hopefully have something to add to the thread soon.
on a sad note think my 99 kona stinky has finally packed in after a few last runs of the fort william wc course! bb is ****ed and am sure the back end of the frame has twisted slightly! think it'll be gettin stripped and any good parts kept n frame for the bin :(

Pbones are definately cannondale ones bud, the P2's are the original forks for that bike, not much is different to factory spec tbf, kind of like it that way lol

Oooh thats quite sexy that is Edd, not a fan of the waveys, could never get on with them when i had a set BiTD, but im really liking the rest of it :d
Quick one, wouldnt that have had a headshok for originally?
Yep it did have a headshox, but there crap lol got the cannondale adapter into the head tube to run normal size forks
Its got Azonic carbon bars, Rockshox Pilot forks, XT V brakes, mechs, cranks, bb, and cassette. The front chainset rings area Middleburn that are at least 15 years old ! lol still got hardly any wear on them
Wheels are the only thing I want to change now, want a front disc and new tyres
Always had a Cannondale in some form for 20 years

Simular spec to mine, but the frame is a limited edition Tinker Juarez / Alison Sydor world cup frame, for those whole would, know lol

Aye thats stuff i can recognise, (well barring the forks tbf) loving the middleburn cranks, and are the rims the 217 ceramics, i thought they were sunsets at first but theyre lime coloured all the way round arent they, and they look a little skinny to be d521's, can you spot the spec on my caldera from the vague pics i posted lol

Tinker Juarez, wasn't he from some tribe of somewhat?? And who remembers Missy Giove?
Yep I remember Missy, she was amazing
The ultimate mountain biker is/was John Tomac tho, awesome rider, im always searching youtube for '90's Grundig world cup action :)
I have a video player solely for the reason to watch Kings of the Mountain 1 and 2 lol
Aye another here that remembers Missy, wasnt the Orange Miss'ile named after here iirc, the ultimate rider for me will always be Jason McRoy R.I.P. :thumb:
Spud you ever watched the Kamakarzie ? (or however its spelt)
Its from the top of Mamouth mountain California to the bottom, basically down the ski slopes when the dry season is on
Look it up on youtube if you havnt seen it, amazing stuff

I raced mountainbikes in the BeNeLux from 1992 till 1999, we also did the Grundig World Cup qualifications in Houffalize. Back then they had like 4 qualifying rounds on the friday ans saturday prior to the race and the best qualified riders would then be placed in the 'big race'...

I used to ride a Cadex CFM frameset with Rond Fork (53mm travel) and Deore XT 8-spd... I'll try to upload some piccies...

i have a bicycle on my bus which is lovely to have and get out and about in a city or just simply away from the bus
ive got a Claud Butler Lite response II, nowt special cable disc brakes , some form of rockshox, its 10 years old now
used it a hell of a lot between sept and november with my work colleague Gernot (austrian) as you could imagine he's a massive bicycle nut, and we upgraded my bike with better handles, comfy seat, a man bag for all my stuff (Giant) some blackburn lights and a mudflap to stop me getting covered in poo
money permitting i fancy a new one later but no idea what sort maybe more of a city bike, i do like cannondale

Do not have a clue Stuart! My mates bike is a fully custom bike which is just built from parts and costs well over £1000.. I'd much rather spend it on the Nova :thumb:
I can see how an xc or race roads would cost a grand or more, but a bmx... Made from scaffold poles and no fancy light kit lol.
Incidentally, the specialised that I'm using at the moment is a bit crap with changing gear on the rear mech, to go down one gear I have to fire in two clicks down and one click up. It is fine at the top and bottom gears though. Something need a tweak? I'd also like a grannies granny gear, is it just a case of getting a new cassette with 8speeds and making sure its got different teeth counts?
i went to my local bike shop today
and they got micro scooters @ £600 :o :wtf: have i missed something lol lol
Yeah slacken the adjuster on the rear mech/shifter a little as it sounds like one click isn't letting the right amount of cable through to change gear Stu!
tried dh today! boring, need another dj bike lol

you would be surprised at how light the bmx's are. they are pricey because they are built to be strong, where as xc bikes are light lol. still hate bmx's though
so heres my trail bike, bought it new in 2009, fully rebuilt it 6 months ago.... the only origional part is the frame lol

Yeah Magura HS33's. Was tempted to get them in Raceline yellow (lime green), but went for silver in the end.
Best mod on the bike by far. (its a 1997 model by the way)
they are the best rim brakes without a doubt, and with a clean rim would beat most discs (theres an innuendo there im sure lol)

I'm going to finally build another bike up this year. Been saying it for years now lol!
I'm not into downhill biking but also don't want a full road bike (I've got one but hardly use it). Since I was 15 I've loved my 16" frame but feel that I should make the step up to an 18" one Lol and the fact that my bike has been in Spain for years now it really isn't worth rebuilding that one as its a bit battered.
I know it makes sense to buy a full bike and then upgrade the parts but I feel like I should get a frame and start from scratch. I'm stuck in the late 90s so ideally wanting a full xt set up with some front rock shox, also wanting v brakes lol DMR pedals, mavic rims, basically want what I had back then. Without being in the scene for years has much changed?
What I need help with is which frame to look for. Not wanting to spend a fortune on it so not really after a carbon frame, would prefer an old model and make it perfect tbh. Are specialized, trek, orange, etc still the ones to get? Been looking at gt frames and they're very cheap (below £100), which gt frames are decent? Feel free to find me a frame for around £200. Any advice would be great, I'm wanting something decent that I can do some serious miles on!
Fell about 4' off a see-saw on the skills area at Chopwell yesterday, and my front brake lever disintegrated (felt like that at the time!) when bombing down a black DH route.
I think my Cube hardtail is out of it's depth. lol
The stupid Hayes Ryde POS levers have a pin going through them with a C clip either end. Fine until you lose a C clip. lol
Nutted and bolted now!
Had a right laugh on my mates Specialized Enduro. His Crank Bros wheels cost half what I paid for my bike! lol
There was also some bloke on an ancient, rigid Saracen. He was on everything. Constantly. Fair play!

It's come on leaps and bounds, mate! IMO, old bikes feel crap to ride now in comparison.
As for V brakes - trust me, you don't. Nothing bites like a decent disk setup. V brakes have two places imo: 1) The bin. 2) History.
Agreed on the DMR's though. lol Rock Shox are still decent (loads of models as with everything). I have Dart 3 air jobs, 120mm travel. Is enough for XC and light DH imo.
Said Spec Enduro has 180mm travel. Makes a big difference. Now wonder he refers to it as the monster truck.
Believe it or not, Fox make some serious forks and rear suspension these days too.
If you're set on Rock Shox though, just don't buy 90's Jett's etc. Lizard Skins optional. :d
I will leave it to the lads who know what they're talking about now! lol

lol thanks for the honest opinions limp.
So you think I should get a newish and light frame? Are xt components still ok though? Suppose I would of gone for discs on the end because most frames use them. I would also go for newer rock shox because I'm wanting to lock them at times, most my riding will be on the roads.
Keep looking at frames and there's hundreds to chose from :(
L33 LEG

Can you still buy lizard skins by the way ha? lol
Deore XT stuff is fine imo. As you say, you don't need the best of the best.
I assume you are a little like me, and have various hobbies, but don't want to spunk all of your money into just one of them? That's me anyway, although I recognise I need a full susp bike for the more knarly stuff. Won't get one though.
One reason is the money. Can't/Won't spend thousands on an MTB, and the other is it's a bit more of a challenge on a hard tail. The turn in is a bit too sharp, but at the end of the day, it's a XC bike, not a DH beast, and that is what I also spend the majority of my time doing.
You're right about the frames, too. I was gonna mention that most won't take V brakes.
As for the frotn fork lockout, it is definitley worthwhile, but doesn't fix the front susp rigidly. I still have maybe an 1-1.5" travel, but imo mine are damped too softly.
My lockout is on the bars, a mates Specialized Hardrock Pro (iirc) has it on top of the fork. This is a **** location imo - plus, it fell off! lol
Can you still buy lizard skins by the way ha? lol
Unsure on that one. lol
When I see car coilovers all covered in grease and crud stuck to it, I am always reminded of them LOL.
Also, don't say you don't like downhill. I don't believe anyone that says this.
It's a riot!
L33 LEG
07-05-13, 01:42 PM
I always think of lizard skins as well with coilovers lol
The trouble I have is that I keep looking at xc bikes but apart from a few weeks in Spain every year I'll only be using the bike on smooth roads and will have no need for suspension and the likes. Hopefully I can build one that will still be useable on the roads, I really am not into downhill biking lol!
I've just seen an identiti frame for sale which is the exact one that I wanted years ago but I don't think it'll be good enough for a mountain bike for the roads tbh. I think I should look at treks and specialized for that.
As for the shocks, I've been on bikes with the lock on the shock and on the bars and I do prefer them on the bar. When I come to buying the shocks I'll see what's available, remembering from a few years ago I think the sids where the ones I wanted.
For road use, I guess you will be wanting to run semi-slick or even full road tyres then? I leave the chunky mud tyres on mine. Some Shwalbe things that have been on since new. The rolling resistance can be a PITA after 20-30 miles, but I would rather that, than compromise an MTB when wanting to have fun.
My mate with the Hardrock just goes for it, even with his semi-slicks on. I am not sure how. lol
Sounds like you don't want to get dirty, Lee. lol Follow your heart and get a nice pointy helmet and some Lycra shorts!

I really should get a proper full road bike but I look like a dick without the correct gear on lol also road bikes are no good for when I ride on holiday. Normal tyres will be fine for me, although when I was kid I did fit skinnier tyres to my bike and I loved them.
I'm really tempted by that identiti frame though, it's pretty much identical to my old frame (dbr) and that suited me perfectly. Suppose if I ever do fancy downhill I will have a bike that can do it. All my family are into that so they're trying to persuade me as well lol
I really should get a proper full road bike but I look like a dick without the correct gear on lol
This is more my style on my road bike. lol I also look like a dick, but at least not a Chris Hoy wannabe!

I'm not cool enough to rock a fixie with no brakes mind. :d
If I was you, I would just buy a mid-range hard tail, off the shelf. Then build up a DH bike, nothing nuts, just something capable.
Your family are correct. lol
Get yourself a Kona Stinky? Old skool widdit! lol
I am sure the pro's will be along later with worthy advice. :thumb:

Yeah that's how I ride, just shirt and shorts and it really isn't the look for a road bike lol
The reason I'm looking at bikes is because I saw my mates kona at the weekend and offered to buy it! I know I should buy a full bike but part of the fun is building it imo. I'll keep looking and see what comes up, think a 17" frame is what I want, I'm not the tallest ha. Hopefully some experts will come on here and find me one Lol. Thanks for the advice though limp, no doubt il still make the wrong decisions and get something completely wrong for what I'll use it for.
Good luck with the Wigan result tonight by the way lol

You will always look like a dick on a road bike, just depends on what end of the scale imo! That is soon forgotten when you have some speed up though. :)
Seeing as we ****ed up royally Vs Villa, and before last night should have been looking to win (a point was great in the circumstances). The best result tonight is a Swansea win. No Michu though... If the worst comes to the worst and Wigan win, putting the scum in the bottom three is scant consilation if we do not win on Sunday - or at least match their result.
This is is what football is all about imo. It's all I have ever known. Never a dull moment!

IF Wigan survive my money is on Newcastle going down so hopefully that will be the case for you! All the teams down there seem to have an easy and tricky game coming up so should be getting 3 points each. It all depends on how Wigan do and if they win tonight then it's going to be very interesting!
You're right about looking like a dick either way but I do love the look of some road bikes and would love to own a proper spec'd one!

Lol snapped collar bone, yep at revs! Still recovering now only happened a week ago, plate, screws and about 30 staples. I was on morphine for a solid 3 days I looked like a crack head lol
did you get yourself up the quarry at revs? not been there for months now (shoulder injury... torn rotator cuff and labrum lol) I broke my collar bone a few years ago.... horrific pain!! heal up soon dude, and take it easy... time is the best healer with shoulders.
I take it you go to llan quite a bit then (notice you live in N.Wales)

Not aloud to ride the quarry it's the pro line now after the athertons made gigantic jumps lol, shoulders doing well now but I'm off work for like 4 weeks! you'd be amazed what you can ride when they're not looking (and if you sweet talk them lol) it may feel fine but you'd be surprised how much you've shocked the muscles and tendons so don't rush back too quick. I've been off work 9 weeks so far with mine and my sicknote gets another 5 weeks put on it this Friday... ouch!! they've done a lot of work up foel recently haven't they... the place is looking good. so you know Bud (Adrian) from stiniog?..... they're a top bunch of guys there.

Yeah I won't be riding for about 3 months which sucks! I need to get back to work ASAP because I'm right at the end of my apprenticeship and need to sort it out. Yeah I know bud and I'm still jealous of his carbon trek haha he is rapid too! I have only been riding since September last year so just getting into it and this happenend.. Typical! Your looking rapid on that video and the tracks at llan look very steep (haven't been there yet)
I get on well with bud, he looked after me when I first started racing... He got that bike for a bloody bargain! It was seeing his first trek that made me get my 88.
We'll have to go to Llan when we're back on the bikes, I race for their team so I'll show you round the tracks. Martin the farmer is a top bloke aswell... Sorts out your dinner on uplifts lol

Penshaw Monument in Sunderland is open to all, now. i had a look up last night.
There was a few kids there with shovels, building new lines, too. Not amazing, but it's on the doorstep, so can't complain!
get your shovel out bud, nothing more annoying than putting loads of work in to have other guys ride your work. and if you get 'in' with those guys they'll probably be more willing to show you their 'hidden' tracks that are usually a lot more fun :thumb:
Refreshed my cove with brake rebuilds, new headset and bottom bracket bearings, along with the 5050x pedals being rebuilt.
Also forked out on new xtr gearing chain shifters etc. Just need some new rubber and shes good to go again :)

Canyon are the best value bikes on the market (other than some sale bikes) the rockshox reba on that canyon are £300-£360 on the Internet, never mind the XT and SLX gearing, decent brakes, swalbe tyres, good rims. My friend bought the torque frx for £1600 and its better than my bike and I spent £1370 buying it and about £600 on upgrades
Second hand bikes seem to fall into two categories.... Cheap and crap or barely cheaper than just buying new. Unless I want to travel halfway up the sodding country anyway lol and wipe out the saving.
Deore or x5 will be more than enough for my lazy level, and a simple solo air fork will do me fine as I'm using a single coil with no damping at the moment lol in short, I'm not going £100 over budget, if I were to do that a whyte or Scott would be top of the list.

Fox rl forks

Mavic 819 rims with hope 2 hubs
All I need is some DMR pedals and xtr brakes then it's complete. Might upgrade the crank to xtr and might sell the Fox forks for some carbon ones. It's pretty much immaculate! Gears are smooth as anything and frame is near new condition and front forks are as new, doubt it's done many miles at all.

This is my ride. Only got it just after christmas. Been thinking about a mountain bike for a while, so bit the bullet and got a Carrera Vulcan 2012 model, as I had read alot of good reviews on it, especially saying it was a great beginners trail bike, which is exactly what I wanted it for, with a bit of commuting to work on too!
Since getting it though I've altered stuff as my riding improved and pretty much happy with it now, although I doubt it'll be too long before I consider a full suspension one! proper enjoying it and got the bug despite being a complete novice!
Upgrade wise it has:
100mm Rockshox Recon's
Renthal FatBar Lite and DMR Grips
Shimano Deore Dual ring Cranks, Bashring and Bottom Bracket
Superstar Chain tensioner
Shimano Saint Pedals
and got a Joplin 4 dropper seatpost on the way!

Took my mate to buy this 'subtle' Cube Attention 29er on Sunday. Rides nice. First hard tail I have ridden with 29" wheels.
Canny bike for £720 imo.

The DMR V12's took a right chunk out of him on the afternoon. lol

Shall be interested to see how the cube survives... A few shops I went to said they wouldn't sell me one as they didnt want it coming back under warranty lol
had new bike a month now n still not done any proper mountain biking on it :(
Them 29ers look as bad as they ride

They're great VFM IMO. Decent enough components, and a nice riding position.
I have experienced a sticky front mech, and lost a C clip from a brake lever pin, and mine gets hammered, on road, XC and trails where it is really out of its depth.
Mainly to irritate Edd lol
Picked up a Norco charger 9.2 today from the (as usual and expected poor serviced) Evans in reading.
Took it for my usual 12k route and knocked 50ish seconds per km off my usual slow time compared to last week I the bike I ride that was too small etc as it was so so so sooooooo enjoyable compared to before. And surprisingly on a medium spring the sag is right for my fat ass.

The tyres are erm, scary on fast Tarmac bends but I guess that's the release compound and a factor of the silly tread. Shall look at tyres after a few more rides.
Dug my old CB out to try and loose some belly, although its quite tired now :( keep skipping/jumping gears

The specialized I was using would jump gears etc and would need the gears setting up after every ride.... Turns out the chain is stretched and needs replacement. Could be the same for you.
Ah, good call :) Only seems to do in certain gears though
How do you buy new chain, by the amount of links or total length?
*Heads off to eGay
Pass, I've got to work that out myself lol
I know the width is down to the number of gears at the back lol
hmm, a new chain would probably be worth more than the bike!
The length and number of links doesn't matter - as all chains are sold too long and you'll need to remove some links to make it the correct length for your bike.
The width is critical. You need to get one that suits the number of gears on your cassette/cluster/rear sprocket (those are all terms for the same thing - the gears on the back wheel of your bike). Count the number of gears, not the teeth on the gears (that's irrelevant). You will probably have either 1 (single speed), 7,8,9,10, or 11 (probably not 11 - those are very expensive and since you're asking this question I'm guessing you don't have 11). When you buy a new chain, tell the bike store guy (BSG) that you need a chain for X speed where X is the number of gears. If you buy online, the description of the item will specify this number.
The size of the links (in mm or inches) is irrelevant if you get the number of gears right.
The brand will probably be printed on the chain links. It is probably Shimano, SRAM or possibly Campagnolo. Although some are compatible, I'd recommend you get the same brand tha
The "type" of chain is printed on each link = HG-70 or something like that. I recommend that until you really know what you're doing, just buy the same one that came off the old bike

ideally you should change your chain as soon as it has .75% stretch and defo by 1%. you can buy a wee gauge that measures it for you and then its a 5 min job to replace it. in my experiance cheap chain tools dont last long, get a good one like a park tool for the bit extra it will cost.
leaving it too long and letting it stretch wears out the chainrings and cassette and then you often have the problem where once you do change the chain it wont work right on the rings and/or cassette (usually cassette first) because they are too worn. then you have to change everything to get it working nicely again and it can cost a fortune if you are using top end stuff.
if you're gettin a new chain i'd always recommend sram chains aswell :)
I looked at my chain last night and all it said on it was HG NARROW  Not 'HG75' or anything similar, any ideas?
tbh, I don't want to spend a fortune on it, just enough to keep it going til xmas time

The park tool I got at the weekend says 0.5% to change the chain and 0.75 to change the chain and cassette.
While its not much in the grand scheme of things, and spudders dislikes metric lol since getting home with the new ride yesterday at 3pm I've done 3 rides totally nearly 55km all in a similar faster pace.... Can't work out if its the big wheels, the right size frame, the new bike feel in my mind or what but its all good :) shall be doing a 60km ride on Saturday morning into London which will be cool

dont worry about what it says on it. all you need to know is what speed chain you are after. ie 7,8,9,10 etc how many gears you have on the back basically
once you know what speed chain you are after go to the local bike shop or online store and buy one. hg is a shimano chain but as i said i dont like them, i run all shimano gearing on all my bikes but always run sram chains and so do a lot of people i know. any cheap sram chain will be fine, most of the difference in better chains is just weight.
anything else just ask :)
stuart, you'll be right then! mines a park tool aswell but been years since i read what the percentage was, i just know how to use it to check lol
Beautiful, thanks grooge..exactly for info i'm after..
It's a 21 speed (3x7) so a 7 gear cassette, so I assume this would be what i'm after ? (spot the noob!)

Proper size wheel, not something a salesmen thought was a good idea
So why aren't you on 24" then...... Since 26" was clearly fresh marketing waaaay back.
29er is just a terrible idea IMO
Granted, possibly a little better up hill, but awful through the tight narrow stuff
Better all round on road, then if anyone is using it for that they should of got a road bike in the first place
29er v 26 is like ARB v no ARB lol
They are actually worse on climbs (to some extent in terms of speed as opposed to grip) but don't let facts spoil you're hate lol
What are the chris cboardman like and what price are they
Bored, man.
Don't do it.
The Boardmans are decent enough, just carry the halfords stigma... New ones get released in august from what I've been told.

Have to disagree on that one, myself and at least three or four others all ride retro, and we often play 'catch/beat the modern bikes' on the trails, we nail them on the climbs, and we're usually passing them, or staying with them on the singletrack/twisties!
My strava times even back up my mates theory, that im faster off-road on my rigid '93 Lava Dome, than on my '98 caldera with front suspension lol

I'm sure most of the catching people lark is down to fitness.... Most folks with a modern rig will be out of shape (me lol ) so you will catch them with ease :)
So why aren't you on 24" then...... Since 26" was clearly fresh marketing waaaay back.
actually started larger than 26 and went down the way, not the other way round
and as for larger wheels being a sales idea edd, largely i would agree but racers on bigger wheels are starting to beat racers on 26" wheels in internatioinal competition....and not on the ups, on the downs more...
and old bikes being faster spud? LOL providing you are riding any sort of proper trails, new bikes are faster without a doubt, when playing catch the rider on a new bike you are only catching them because you are a better rider than them.

Im still 18 stone and well out of shape, so your theory is out of the window im afraid stubert :p
Although i do think im slowly rediscovering my bottle, so a lot of my getting faster is down to having the balls to push fast, and push hard!
But then again on the flip side last night, i pushed myself sooo hard on one climb, i was sick a little bit, then on one about half an hour later, i clipped out at the top of the climb, and my legs failed and i collapsed

I dont think i was as clear as i intended there, i wasnt saying that old bikes are faster, i was merely saying i dont agree with Edd's comment that old bikes are crap and dont ride as well as modern bikes is all!
Weight is not equal to fitness.... And you should know that :p
Incidentally, mostly for edd the duck, I'm about a minute per km faster on the big wheels than I was on the dinky ones lol
Im still three stone overweight and im a lot slower than i could/will be lol
I'm less than you and I'm technically 4 stone overweight lmao
Spud, old bikes are OK, I still have my 97 cannondale
But my new bike feels so much better, different geometry, shorter stem etc makes a much better ride
Hydro disc are so much better than v brakes
The difference is massive
I dont think i was as clear as i intended there, i wasnt saying that old bikes are faster, i was merely saying i dont agree with Edd's comment that old bikes are crap and dont ride as well as modern bikes is all!
i see, apologies then! i would agree with you there, i still have a couple 90s konas myself!
edd, well set up v brakes will be as powerful as any hydros, the only downfall is worse brake fade and they dont work well once wet. technically a good v brake would be more powerful than a hydro because of the bigger size of the brake disc (wheel). geometry again is debatable, plenty of old bikes that have much better geometry than the newer versions of the same model! i still agree discs are miles better though, just being awkward lol much like cars, old and new bikes both have their pros and cons, to say old bikes are **** n new ones are good is a very blinkered approach to take in my opinion. each to their own though i suppose
Both Edds and your points are about what i was meaning/thinking, i adore my '93 lava dome, but i absolutely love my '98 caldera, judy xc's full xt/xtr, sooo comfy to ride, so responsive, light and comfy, ive tried modern bikes and dont get on with them, and ive also tried hydraulic discs too, while theyre good, im not as happy with the feel of them, as i am with my xt parallel push V's!
Btw, what kona's do you have, and are you on RB :d
got a 98 stinky like this but not nearly as nice, got it for 50 quid and only use it at fort william on the downhill. still capable of sticking with the new bikes although the shorter travel does give you brutal arm pump!
http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/1331053/
and got a 99 nunu that i got in 02 and will never sell. not much left standard on it though, its been well used over the years! all thats left original is frame, fork, seatpost, handlebars and brake levers! going to change the fork over to a spare z1 i have to get another 20mm travel n put a front disc on it. i'd stay with the v brake but occasionally i do all day runs in the highlands where you can wear out a set of pads in a weekend if its wet, which it usually is
