Niiiice one Alan, sounds like it's coming together now. Look forward to some pics
it's slowly being put back together, had an hr on it tonite and got the dash back in - heres how it stands at the moment:
Outside, obviously not a lot happening here:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0132.jpg
Bay, pretty much done, just have to mount the coilpack and run the coilpack and tps wiring in - oh and the starter/alternator to battery cable:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0133.jpg
Dash, again just the megajolt stuff to do:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0136.jpg
Back, just the battery to fit and wire up and tidying the wiring run:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0137.jpg
Dash looks really smart al
still mega jealous of the cleaness of this shell :d
Cheers mate - I was pretty lucky with the lack of rot when I got this - it's got it's mot very soon though so will get a good poke about underneath when it's up on the ramps - just to be sure!
A quick video or draper demoing after we fitted the 4.1 and diff - shortly before it blew up - hmm might there be a correlation there?

lol fail
dont think i can directly blame draper - it did well to last as long as it did - was showing the signs for a while and sticking the gearbox extras and flywheel etc on just tipped it over the edge lol
That interior floor needs a layer of red on it!
Bay's gonna look ace with everything hidden/cleaned :)

lol if you want it to take longer then the total build!..
lol if you want it to take longer then the total build!..
ouch lol
OK, to recap for those at the back - the head had new guides, valve seats cut and been away for a skim....so time to rebuild it. :thumb:
I happily lapped the valves in and then vacuum tested them - and then found only 4 out of 8 were sealing properly ..... so back out they came and after another 2 or 3 goes each theyre looking good - all hold decent figures.
Tryin to take pics with one hand while holding everythin else with the other wasnt working - i was struggling to hold the gauge on and pump up etc - but you get the idea:

Alan if you get this on the road by 8th August I'm arranging a meet at our usual haunt here (http://vauxhalldriversclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=3941). Yourself and any other Nova for that matter is more than welcome. If you still have your Cally come in that if the Nova isn't done. If the weather holds I'll be in my GTE (http://vauxhalldriversclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1555) :)
Just read though your diary and it looks like you've been having some fun with the Nova.
Harvey your GTE is gorgeous

agreed looks stunning :thumb:
Cheers guys but I wasn't saying that when my oil pump gear died last year.
Back to Alan's Nova thread, hope you can make the meet as all are welcome.
Does Tom Reid do head work as I have a couple of X30XE heads I want porting & polishing?

Have to agree mate - i do love astra gtes but yours is pretty damn special!
Should be able to make the meet mate - i would seriously hope the nova is done by then, if not i'll come down in the calibra but i cant guarantee it will get washed first lol
Tom does do head work mate - and if you want full on race prep he has some very good contacts too
It would be good to see the Nova there so fingers crossed it's done for the 8th August. I'll have to give Tom a buzz and have a chat, not after anything fancy just a clean and tidy up of the head and ports.

It will definately be done by then- should be done this week, it's the getting it in for an mot I might struggle with!
Finished the valves last night - after having to lap the last one in about 15 times before it came right - odd but true.
Cleaned up the cam box and took out the old cam ready for the bigger one and vernier. The head and cam box were painted with aluminium paint before but it looked sheet so im just leaving it bare this time - i might roughly polish it depending on how much time i get before it goes on.
Will get some pics later.
At least you didnt have 16valves to lap in lol
I am doing a full gasket change and de-coking the head on mine, and lapping the valves is the bit i am not looking forward to

I don't mind doing it - pretty satisfying when u get them all nice and strong.
Definately get hold of a vacuum tester if you dont have one tho - I had to redo 4 of mine after testing them as they weren't up to scratch.
well i am doing it at my uncles garage and i am sure he will have one floating about,
whether it works or not thats another story lol
I wanna paint my engine whilst its out, you recommend any paints/methods?

Hopefully he will have, I was really surprised how they can look ok but actually not hold very well at all when tested - but I'm starting to get the hang of what to look for in more detail now.
I just brush painted my block with hammerite hammered - gave it a good drill/grinder wirebrush off and some rust killer for good measure first.
I did paint my head etc with some stuff that was kicking about (rattlecan aluminium paint) but im not going to this time, wasnt a fan, just goin to get it really clean.

Yea sure he will, otherwise he will be able to borrow one from one of his mates who all own garages lol.
And yea was just going wire brush the sh1t out of it then degrease it, then brush on hammerite the block,
same with the head but fancied trying to semi-polish it lol
Only time can tell the outcome lol

I think youre thinking the same as me for the head then - Ill keep you posted when i attack it and see how far i get before i get pissed off lol
Only problem is the rest of the parts in my engine bay, like my rusty manifold.
Scabby brake servo, skanky washer bottles, the list continues lol
And problem is i neeed to use my car to get to work in, and i got the courtesy car for a week, so i am restricted to what i do

Stuff like that you can pick at over time tho - it won't take long to get everything looking fresh again - or at least thats what i keep telling myself. .....
Only had half hr spare last night so fitted a couple of external bits to the head:
Water inlet with temp sensor tapped in:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0149.jpg
Cut down and drilled out a temp sensor and cleaned it up for a blank:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0152.jpg
Sealed the heater matrix outlet into the carb manifold:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0150.jpg
Had a halfarsed attempt at polishing the head but ive a sneaking feeling it will be too much like hard work now lol
Built up the rest of the head, lifters in etc and put the carb manifold and alternator bracket on as well as the exhaust manifold studs. Cleaned up the cam box and repainted the rocker cover. Also gave my dizzy blank a quick rub. Pics:

I've painted it a couple of times - it always burns off within a month!

Al, what time is it????
I painted my stainless manifold then wrapped it and then painted the wrap as it helps prolong its life. Been on the car for a couple of years now with no problems and covered just over 2K. When up to full temp you can touch the down pipes, just, it's that efficient.
I've seen wrapping done incorrectly that many time, people tend to pop the ties on and leave the fabric bare with no protection i.e. VHT paint on top if the wrap. Then they wonder why it doesn't last for long before it starts falling to pieces.

yeeaa its coming on now :d looks spanking mate
Cheers chaps!
Ok I painted the exhaust manifold, changed the oil and filter, filled up with fresh coolant and rivetted the clips for the battery wiring - not much progress but I haven't got much time at the moment...Quite frustrating when there's so little to do.

Pm tom reid with what engine you are using as he supplied mine.
For the water outlet I have a fitting tapped into the manifold (there's a pic a couple of pages back) to allow me to run the heater.
Edit - heres the pic: mine had the hole welded up so it was tapped to take the fitting:

Nice work.
I'm still not convinced by bike carbs vs throttle bodies (with a good proper management like DTA or MoTeC). There are soooo many things that carbs are good for (simplicity) but injection is ever so much better for putting the right amount of fuel in at the right time, producing far better driveability, with the benefit of improved economy over carbs.
But hey, it looks impressive, and I'm sure it sounds good too.
I'm impressed by how good the megajolt is, the first time I heard of one, I thought what a good idea. Something that someone could build themselves cutting the cost. Or buy a fully built one.
Now then! That fan. Put it back behind the rad and set it to suck, not blow. Why? It's interfering with your airflow. On my V8 nutter Belmont I had a pair of those fans in front of the rad, and it used to get pretty hot. Removing them from the front, and putting only ONE behind made a hell of a difference. It runs a lot cooler, and it a happy bunny! One behind is plenty to cool it down.
Moving on - that tube manifold. Is that a 4-into-1 job, where all 4 are side-by-side - if so, skip it. The factory cast manifold will result in more power! In fact, the best "ordinary" manifold setup is the 1300 cast job, fully port matched, both to the head and the downpipes (genuine factory ones, now TI Bainbridge crap) and tidy those too, to improve flow. The only manifold I found to be an improvement over that is one of Mr Joe Ellis' BTB jobbies. I found TWO horsepower over the cast/tube setup, compared to losing EIGHT with the 4-1 inline jobby.
The most efficient system is also the BTB system. It sounds nice too.
I see you've beefed up one of the engine mounts. You really need to do all three, or the engine will pitch in the bay and break the gearbox mounts quickly.
In over ten years of circuit racing a Nova I never ever broke an engine mount, and only ran standard rubber mounts. I did toy with putting something stiffer in there, but couldn't see any benefit as I didn't have any problems.
I only ever broke one CV, and that was due to a spin at Donington and a trip sideways over a kerb from the wrong side (where it wasn't tapered and slopy!)
Diff Ratio - I found greater accelleration with a 3.94:1 diff than a 4.18, and that was with a Quaife 5 speed box. Laptimes were better with the taller diff. I used to run a 4.53:1 at Lydden, but lapped faster with the 4.18. The 3.94:1 was better on Brands Indy than the 4.18 - which was touch and go at running out of revs! I was looking for a 3.74:1 for use at Thruxton.
^
Can i ask the difference in lap times around lydden with the 2 diffs i ran a 4.1 there and would be interested to know the benefits of the longer diff
Forgot to say i know someone with a new btb manifold spk to Tom:thumb:

I ran the shorter diff around Lydden - in the 1300 I ran a 4.53, which meant I was using the first four gears (with the quaife box). In the 1600 I ran the 4.18, and use the same. I tried the 4.53 with the 1600, but found 1st too short at the top of Hairy Hill, so was using 2nd to 4th, but screaming it's nuts off coming into the Elbow. It was about .2s slower with the shorter diff.
I'll have to dig out some old results/qually sheets - I have no idea where they are, though it'd be fun for a spot of nostalgia!

Sorry for the thread hijack:d

Yep, sorry about the hijack!! What spec engine/car and what series?
I was running mine on road tyres in BRSCC Super Road Saloons. Kent AST9 cam on throttle body injection = very driveable.
No problems on the kijack - its all interesting stuff!
Mainly the choice of what has/hasnt been done to the car is down to the fact it's a learning-curve budget road toy.
Eg the carbs and mj has cost me well under half of what throttle bodies would have done and is something that I was comfortable installing and learning how to map. Ditto with the exhaust etc, I have been offered a btb but was unsure if it would be overkill for the spec of the engine?
With the diff and 4.1 - basically it's an experiment, I'll see how it goes, same with the cam, it had a kent ast11 but will now have a 290 so will see how that affects it.
At the end of the day if any mods don't work they can always go back - or try something else - for me it's as much about the trying and seeing as the end result if that makes sense.

I run a nova on slicks with 1400 ,a kent ast18r i think its the supersports cam 1 down from race on 45,s still on dissy:thumb: only raced once at lydden in the dmn
Finally me and Draper can drive a Nova again lol Bring it out tomorrow night - I think I'm going to MFN if you wanna come?
It needs a setup really mate - with the changes and freshening up it will want the carbs tweaking and a mapping session before it gets any heavy use!

Cracking project you have here mate, just read through all 32 pages lol once carbs are tweaked it should be a giggle to drive :thumb:
Alan, you popping down to the VXdc meet this afternoon now it's got an MOT, looking forward to seeing it if you are?
Going to take the cover off my Astra GTE and blow some cobwebs off it today :)
Yes i'll be down mate - although i've just got up to a pool of petrol under the calibra so it looks like i'll be replacing pipes this morning! Hope my luck improves for the afternoon!
Great to see the Nova yesterday, looks fantastic in the flesh ;)
Cheers mate but it looks far from fantastic lol it's covered in dents and scratches but at least not rust! it did look rather sorry for itself sat next to yours - might have improved it a bit if i'd have washed it but meh....

You got it properly mapped yet and had it on the rollers?
You got it properly mapped yet and had it on the rollers?
Not yet! Done a bit of faffing with the cam timing and mapping to get it running better but it does need a proper going over to get the most out of it.
It will go on the rollers when theres a local day on lol - im not fussed about power figures but would def come if one gets sorted!
Whens the next peacock meet btw?

But I like 8 valve smallblocks
so your liking the new cam now al ?
not sure on the coilpack mounting tho tbh mate

I agree with Damper, it should be hidden under the winglol
im not keen on the coil on display either - so next job will be to make one up that sits at the back of the engine i think.....
also thinking firewall may have to go?

i do two matey!! looks bang on!!
so crossed a couple of things off my list today, fitted the -60 springs i got from shaun and replaced my SOLID mount with a competition one....

get this:

Rinse and repeat for the other side and the back and you get this:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0805.jpg
its seemed to have made more difference on the back but the car still sits right so meh (a tiny bit of rake, just right).
lowering it that bit more and cranking up the dampers (ive turned them up to half way) has made a big difference.
easier to see the amount its dropped by in the garage so heres the gap before:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0798.jpg
and after:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0799.jpg
Decided after that to just quickly swap over the drivers side engine mount, so whipped the old one off, ssat it next to the new one.... hang on.... spot the difference...
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0819.jpg
being as i already fiddled with the mount to get the engine level this wasnt gonna work, so found a bit of decent thickness bar kicking about - drilled a few holes (bloody hard stuff as well)...
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0823.jpg
to get this:

bolted up lovely:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0827.jpg
has made such a difference to the noise inside the car, its like ive fitted another silencer... or a different engine - will get the rest fitted at some stage, but no rush now.

im told theyre hottuning/jamex ones - they (unscientifically) feel stiffer than the spax ones that came off and definately feel stiffer on the car.
i dont know mate - but i didnt think about them being big block mounts so you could be right there! its all good with the spacers on though!

It's legal in the sense that it's MOT'd and sits of the road in my drive... But not int he sense that I have it insured or taxed and driving round the streets like a right little chav.

Haha, reminds me of my olf GTE, it must have had tinted windows at one point and there was glue residue on the them. On a long journey from Swansea to Liverpool, my mate decided to scratch into the residue, SR Nova driving like a joy rider lol
on the downside, I do feel that you're just taking the pi$$ that I can't drive atm... :(

I happen to have a fibreglass bonnet that you said about a few pages back... It's not in the best of conditions... But I'm sure a man of your talent will be able to sort something out with it, I'll find my for sale thread and link it...

Cheers but that's not a bonnet so it's no good for me - it's a skin that's meant to bond over your existing bonnet - so no weight saving! Thanks for the offer though!

Ah, so it's just bent wheels then , should be an easy repair.
Well ok then:
Smashed wheel.
Bent lower arm - proper banana job.
Bent beam possibly - looks like its just the hub/stub that has bent but will be swapping the beam anyway.
I have pics, not the camera with me tho.
Thats a shame ,but i know someone with some wheels for salelol

Yeah pretty much - came off a roundabout a bit too fast - its pretty cambered so i was 'settled in' the corner lol - to be greeted by a curb deep puddle half way across the road, couldnt avoid it so it just whipped it round - had a go at catching it but failed, couple of spins and ended up half on the verge after mounting the curb. Unfortunately theyre high curbs there as well!
First thought was **** ill never be allowed to forget this lol.
But it drove home - albeit going steady as i dont like the sound of tyre on bodywork!

Yer thats it, everytime in near future when your talking about driving, you know someone will bring it up lol.
And not a nice feeling/sound when your wheel and bottom arm is soo bent its rubbing on your inner arch, mine did when i crashed but i still made it home lol

Smashed the alloy - tyre still up tho:

Don't think these are supposed to look like this:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0833.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0834.jpg

Fortunately the only bodywork damage:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0838.jpg
So I picked up some spares from mr draper and had 2 hrs on it last nite.
Spot the difference:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0841.jpg
Stripped the polys off the old one, im going to use the whole thing from the new one just incase the old one was bent other than where it's obvious:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0843.jpg
A couple of pics for lionel - a good wire wheel, some etch, red oxide and then satin black:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0844.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0845.jpg
And fitted:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0847.jpg
Won't know for sure until i measure it wheel centre fron the back but it looks a lot healthier now:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0851.jpg
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0853.jpg
So i spent the next 40 mins or so getting the brake pipes off the beam - ******* job - and stripping the driver side hub - im just going to swap the passenger one straight over if i can get it off when the beam is off. So i left it at that......
amateur lol
that btom arm might straighten out :tard:
amateur what? im sorry u cant be about to make sure i do everything properly.... :thumb:
tom reid
06-10-10, 09:36 PM
All the sh1te we gave you for those pics, what a let down, I was expecting tho see the wheel tucked under the beamlol
Have you checked the hub to see if it's bent?
the hub/stub is definately bent - im not sure how to check if the end of the beam is bent or not - hence swapping the lot, maybe i dont need to but id hate to just swap the hubs and then find its still not right!

07-10-10, 09:16 AM
As I already said mate, unlucky on the mishap, happens to the best of us. Good to see you cracking on and getting it sorted and bonus times on it not doing any bodywork damage
Ha ha cheers mate - dont know about happens to everybody but im sure it wont be the last time i bend it! we need to get yours done!

07-10-10, 11:47 AM
Well when your ready mate we can hit the rest of the wiring, I didn't want to hassle you about it, appreciated what you've done already. But give us a shout when your all sorted :thumb:

07-10-10, 04:02 PM
Bay looks super clean dude!
Cheers mate.
Did a bit more on it last nite - beam coming off:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0858.jpg
And off, shame to replace it as its actually a lot cleaner than the beam I got to go on it:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0859.jpg
Looks a little sorry for itself:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0861.jpg
And after about an hour of angle grinder knot wheel action I could paint the new beam - which now looks like this......
....... for lionel....... always for lionel......
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0856.jpg
Picked up a new bearing and wheel cylinder for the drivers side this morning so can rebuild that lot tomorrow.

Looks like you'll be ready for the 25th... ;)
i doubt it mate - i need to get the back end all back together, get it tracked and hopefully get it mapped - not looking good! Everything is off/stripped/painted ready to go back on now.
well its been out for a drive today - tracking is out but it feels straight so im not complaining - also measures spot on wheel centre to centre, side to side - so i think im lucky.
Beam about ready to go on:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0862.jpg
And on, with a bit of a straighten and some paint on the arch lip:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0863.jpg
Other side:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0864.jpg
After a good look im still not convinced that the beam didn't bend - i think theres a very slight kink in the upright on the drivers side end. But its pretty obvious that this is where most of the bending was:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0865.jpg
Along with the lower arm - so plans now are fit the quickrack, get it tracked and get some different wheels.... but at least she moves again - in a week which i wanted!

Well the novas officially off the road for winter as of last wkend, to be fixed and/or improved for next year. Swapped the insurance onto the bmw (yes yes, tom - draper - lionel, i know....) so now time to 'project' that I guess!
yes looking forward to seeing the e30, got any plans for it?
yes looking forward to seeing the e30, got any plans for it?
Apart from brakes all round, welding, a brake pipe, exhaust manifold gasket and a new steering wheel - to get the green bit of paper - not right now!

would love a 3dr e30 - fancy a nice 1.2 carbed nova for a winter hack lol lol

yes chaps - buffer and compound at the ready, but only after its moted lol. back down to toms last nite and got the back brakes on while tom sorted a brake pipe out (cheers again chap). so now only the exhaust manifold gasket to do and sort the horn and were about there - then cosmetics!
saab looks mint there btw chimp old boy.
Whats the plan for the horn? Just relocate it off the wheel to a button for simplicity?
That tappy noise was just the exhaust gasket leaking then? That's good :)

I 'think' thats what the noise is, doesnt sound mechanical at least.
Hopefully i can pick up a wheel one eve this week and that will sort it - but if not yeah ill just put it on a switch.
Got my balls crossed that the manifold gasket plays nice as i wouldnt be feeling haf a dozen snapped studs lol

Thats a lot for a 316 - you can get a really quite tidy 325 for that kind of cash.
Get it sorted then mate - you know theres a bed here (for yourself and the better half if you like) if you can sort it for the wkend, you can pick one of my off the road cars to laugh at to make you feel better about the golf too :thumb:
You done anything with the Nova while it's been in Winter hibernation, or has the BMW had lots of man loving?
Lol the bm is the most ungrateful car I have ever owned.... take take take and no give - but I'm hoping that will be something like within the next couple of wkends.
Nova - loads of jobs, but it's sat unloved until now pretty much - I've got to:
- fit the quickrack (built it up but not put it back on yet)
- sort out my flywheel skimming so i can fit a paddle clutch
- refurb the new wheels and get tyres swapped over
Then decide what to do cam wise - either stick with the 290 and have the cam box skimmed and new valve springs OR put the old kent back in and take the 4.1 out for a 3.9 - can't make my mind up......

no mate it's been sat in the garage for a while as im doing various bits on it - should be out this wkend once i've finished 'altitude adjusting' lol
They're the old style schmidt modernlines mate
Ohhwee, sounds good, when is the ol' girl coming out to play then :p
Not really sure mate - I'm hoping to use it daily for a bit after this wkend but it does need a good mop to be presentable!
Let me know if your planning a looms visit in it and i will pop down for a looksie :)
Will do mate - probably will do in a couple of weeks!
On a nova note: I'm sticking with the 290 - so the cam box has to come off soon to go on holiday to be skimmed. Got some new springs coming and need to refurb the new wheels and get them tyre-d up. Then put the rack back on and it'll probably just about be ready for when the mot runs out.... meh

looking good, i love the dash, a mate of mine was trying to convince me to get bike carbs for mine the other day as he has a mk4 polo 1.4 16v on r1 bike carbs with a megajolt ecu and says there awesome.

if you wanted a dash doing let me know! :thumb:
i'd recommend the bike carbs, had no hassle apart from compulsively taking it apart to upgrade lol
if you end up down this end of the world more than welcome to have a look/ride when it's back together
Dash looks quality, get it built up so we can go for a blast!

What he said ^^^^ :thumb:
I did the dash myself, modding wise its had the glovebox, whole bottom below the heater panel support and then across below the headlight switch removed and the stereo blanked off. The flocking is something I'm doing myself as well - if anyone is interested pm me!
Hmmmm, must not pm as im skint and need all the funds i have to actually finish mine lol

dash looks :wisewood:
humping monkey! lol
got the valves lapped in last night, can't believe how much easier it is when the seats/valves have been cut - tested with the vacuum gauge and definitely getting much better readings than last time when i just lapped them without cutting :thumb:
i love putting things back together:
