New MOT, straight through, Ive only done 3.295 miles in a year! lol

has anyone els got these new mot's? there well odd, you just get a receipt to say its passed now, as the certificate is on the VOSA database!

Just re insured it, £219 FC for both of us,Tax it Monday for £135 12 months, so just over £400 OTR for a year.

Not bad considering i pay £350 by my self to insure the Astra, and its £250 12 months tax!

Hi Scott, I have done 500 miles in my nova since march but its my second car though. I have just put a new mot on mine. It failed on emissions. Just needed the carb tuned and it runs much better :). My insurance fully comp with me only on the policy (I am 31 btw) is £190 classic insurance with limited miles of 3k and with an agreed price certificate.:thumb:

I keep looking at it and thinking, im stuck for things to do now, as i think it's pretty much complete, only thing i can do is get the underside a bit more tidy, and maybe at some point get the bottoms of both doors/sills re painted as they have small stone chip bubbles coming on.

So after an amazing day yesterday at Retro Rides Gathering, i decided it was time i fitted a few things i had sitting about, got this AA badge so made a mount for it, and slapped it on..

Then after Framptons blusterous service, or lack of customer service they sent me this in the post for free, so put it to use after again making a quick mount for it.

So....... After another failed fuel line, as I only replaced it the other year, got that sorted then I turned my attention to the brakes, as the o/s caliper has been sticking for a while, decided best option was to change to the ate set off the corsa sport I've got for the x16xe.
So switched it all over, seems to be working fine, so if I can ill wash and polish it before popping up to the national on Sunday.

So today I decided to try lower the rear end a bit more, I did it the pikey way, I took a quarter of the bottom of the springs, and flattened the bottom and top with a flap wheel.

So heres a pic from the national..

Did you go from the standard 1.2 breaks to the corsa ones? If so how much better is the braking? Do you still have to push the pedal as hard? I have the standard setup on mine and the calipers are brand new, the braking power is fine for me I just hate how I have to put effort in to push the pedal. Maybe I am just lazy lol

SimonTW
31-05-13, 04:55 PM
Looking good. Any pictures of the spring mod?

The lock surrounds could do with a lick of paint to bring them back to up the same gray as the handles. :thumb:

Yep, from standard 1.2 to corsa sport brakes and they are allot better now the pads are re worn in.
Less effort to push the peddle also.

Simon, there the last thing I'm worried about mate lol there's loads that need doing to it, but it's all on a long list of things I want to get done, but money is not so flowing now days.

Ps: no sorry no pic of the springs, all I did was cut a quarter of the bottom of the pigtails, and then flattened off both the top and bottoms.

What's the disadvantage of chopping springs if done right, bad spring travel maybe?... Just curious.

John
31-05-13, 09:27 PM
I might have an old mudflap lying around somewhere Scott, will have a look.

MK999
31-05-13, 09:27 PM
You can't coil the ends on top of each other to form a decent flat support, it'll look more like a corkscrew. Also makes the spring rate higher to an unknown amount, but usually less than required since it's normally done on standard springs down to half their height or something silly, and generally it's done with an angle grinder which will harden the metal around the cut, although that's not really an issue because the rest of it is still softer, doesn't get hot enough to harden through it's length.

Given Scott has only taken 5 mm off the top and flattened it off I'm guessing it's not that bad though. He's only a little bit of a pikey lol

Southie
31-05-13, 09:34 PM
Mk you've not answered my question though. I can't see a problem with that if he's got decent poundage springs.

MK999
31-05-13, 09:57 PM
The spring doesn't sit flat when you chop them generally, there's nothing really wrong with what Scotts done as I said, but I've given you all the reasons it's generally not a good idea.

Southie
31-05-13, 10:11 PM
Have you tested his modification on a Nova though?

I always found the backend just follows the front, if safe then I was happy. I ran chopped springs for 3 years without a problem... FK ones if anyone needs to know... Not massively chopped so that they scrub on the inner arches btw lol

scott.parker
31-05-13, 10:22 PM
lol at you pair, basically if you look at bottom of the coil I've gone straight across from the pig tail end and chopped it off there so as not to remove to much, then took about 4-5mm off both top/bottom by flattening them off with the flap wheel, just a very desperate attempt at trying to lower it with no extra cost..

Southie
31-05-13, 10:33 PM
Scott, he works for NASA lol

MK999
31-05-13, 10:35 PM
well the risk with chopped springs is they don't sit in the seats, so there's a chance they come out, assuming yours were coilovers? so you probably could have wound the spring off the shock if you tried. Anyway, like I said, I'm guessing Scotts sit better than standard tbh as they never seem to bother winding aftermarket springs flat :p

Southie
31-05-13, 10:45 PM
Your always so right ain't you :p

Do I go lower on the front lol the down pipe and sump are about 3-4'' from the ground, I can go 25mm more but would only go say 5-8mm lower.

When the arches were fitted they got trimmed back, although not cleanly done for my liking, but that's what happens when you get someone else to do it..

Its a GM colour, I was looking at getting a proper bumper paint from the era, but it's nls, so got another paint that's close, and had it mixed with a percentage of satin agent etc.

I agree it did look great at Billing, nice stance and slightly different to the norm.

Cheers Iain, well the one thing I've tried is both my car's to have a very unique colour /style combo etc, ok this one's a bit on the '' classic '' side, but I'll keep trying, and that stance is at a price, the price of comfort lol

So......... Don't you hate it when you got to re tax a car and find your mot ran out lol
It expired on Friday, so it's in the garage tonight for one, then it's getting taxed and insured ready for retro rides.

Astra is on sorn as I can't afford to do both lol
Saloon will be getting a proper advert once I find time, as I'm getting pissed off with time wasting via Facebook etc, might place it on here, but so far not getting any serious offers..
So I'll end up ebaying it..

I'll keep the hatch as it's almost like part of me now lol, but I don't really have any enthusiasm for novas and no plan to ever own another, I would like to flog the Astra too and ideally get something like a bmw or something nice, yet rwd..

Big block?
Benn, I'll explain, Alex, you know if i could get a let for around £6/800 i would, but tbh ive not got the cash to pay the price lets fetch..

So... As my plan was to x16xe turbo the loon, ive now decided to try do it to this instead, as i cant keep the loon and the hatch..
But bigger picture is to try get the underside stripped and re coated and basically give it a really good going over and the attention it deserves instead of splitting my time between two cars..

Nothing much happening here with this, got loads of things I'd love to do, but age old money issues blah blah.. House.. Wedding planning..

Imo it needs a good going over, i want to strip re paint the underside, get the bottomof the doors sills painted, long term possibly a new front cross member as ive noticed rot on the back lip, want to eventually drop the x16xe in and turbo charge it (got everything apart from management)

But for now all i can do is try to clean it and keep it..

Oh i thought there where photos of the quarters being painted a while back? Or was that the saloon?
Doing it your self is the best way, as it's quite time consuming. So you can just sit under there at weekends.
Cut 2K out the wedding and spend it on the Nova... THen drive the Nova to the wedding. And yes i do love it!

scott.parker
21-03-14, 10:23 AM
lol that rear quarter was my fault, it was when i reversed into a low bollard.

Benn
21-03-14, 10:35 AM

I am considering stripping mine in favour of 2 buckets and a cage over the winter. So a set may, MAY be available......A full on track beast may encourage me to use it more. Been road worthe for 3 years in its current state.

scott.parker
11-05-14, 08:32 AM
My opinion on that is, don't do it! Maybe strip the back out and rear cage it as a temporary thing, but from experience you will use it less as it becomes a chore to get in/out and drive regular etc..

Been thinking about the state of my paint work...
Need to decide on, do i make it sr lookalike dark lower half, or do I get the rubbing strips removed and respray both side, then either put them back on, or leave them off??

Really needs something doing, as the drivers side sill has a bubble of rust, and door edge is getting small bubbles...

scott.parker
16-06-14, 08:52 PM
Ahh, see normally i don't ask opinions on styling, normally i just go yeah I'll do this etc and people normally approve lol

Right, the only reason ive toyed with the sr styling is because..
A, I've always badly wanted a Jamaica yellow SR, ive got close twice in my nova owning years, but i dont really want another project, or a rough shell i don't know..
B, As per above i know this shell really well, it needs no major work, but needs a bit of tidy up here and there, so thought if im going to paint areas that are in the sr rep area's i could go that way and save time/mony, or if i re do it yellow down both full side it means rubbing strips removed, and they might not be re usable after, so the thought of not fitting them crossed my mind..

As for wheels, well as much as ive enjoyed the look of the intra/expressions, they were never meant to be permanently in rattle cans, or a set of wheels for life etc..
There rough, there a **** to clean due to spokes and **** finish etc, and as common on mk1 novas as speedline alessio's are to gsi's.

So for ages ive been looking for a retro style rare but nice wheel, they fit the bill imo perfectly, and they will be easy to keep clean.
I just need to make my mind up first.

Don't believe that for a second Ben, it all depends on the make. You will never have to me believing that a QH bottom ball joint is as good as GM.

^^^personal experiences^^^

Benn
03-07-14, 10:08 AM
They are all built to OE quality. They have to be, well all our stuff does.

And QH made half the stuff for GM. (cv joint, ball joints, track ends and arms)

It's only the cheap stuff you buy from Ebay that isnt...

Johnny A
03-07-14, 10:30 AM
How come my old cally and cav would eat qh ball joints in months but when I paid out for gm ones they lasted the length of the car?

Benn
03-07-14, 10:51 AM
Maybe the earlier ones (sent to gm) where better made? Not sure. Might be just different tolerances(sp?)

I've had the same with First line over Moog. Both Oe, but First line stuff wears alot quicker.

You did just prove me right just then - First line are used by most motor factors round here.

All I know is Delphi stuff is OE strength and quality, nowerdays with Vauxhall prices being retardly expensive I just fit Delphi stuff and it's spot on.

No news on the bump strips, Richard got me some part numbers, I'm waiting to here back from Niek if there's any in stock.
Hopefully I'll get cracking on it after September time.. No rush though, it will be a gradual process..

Chris, I'm not sure yet, I've done some measuring and it looks like I may be able to use the frontera one, though I'll have to get some mounts welded to it.
Got a lot of decisions to make about what to weld, cut, blah blah blah..
