Always wanted to make a thread but never did get round to it.
I bought this car in July 2007 off the bay, already had a previous Nova which was a more door saloon. I couldnt resist this buy because it was only sitting at £500 so i took it home for it :thumb:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9070002.jpg

Got to work on ditching the clear front indicators and rear clusters and puotting back to original, also stumbling apon theese Astra alloys, Want to do them in a lighter colour not black!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/Vauxhall%20Nova/P5070001.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/Vauxhall%20Nova/P5070002.jpg

After that i wanted more power so i bought up some twin 40's and was going to tune up the little engine, But this was my every day car and with fuel prices on the rise i wasnt sure, but then kitt_1972 (Scott Kitteringham) the on ethat used to own the blue nova van took me out in his redtop nova van and it was the first time i had been in one, so i was hooked, I had to have obn in mine, so i got on te bay and stumbled on it for £150 only because he advertised it as "Cavalier Engine"!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/Photo-0077.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/Photo-0078.jpg

So naturally i cleaned it all up replacing a few gaskets ( have to admit didnt stay clean for long, they really do piss oil!

So waited for a few months find the best time to start work and where to do it as my driveway is slopped, Found out the girlfriends rents were going away on holiday, and there drive was perfect, so i put up a Kazebo and it was rainging all week and got started!

The after ripping it the usual came along with the welding and painting

Looking good so far mate :D

Personally I think it needs the sr alloys back on as the Astra ones don't suit it. Maybe because they are black. Also how come you haven't spayed the door bottoms black at the same time you did the bumpers???

Keep up the good work

You should be able to fit the SR wheels on without shaving them. Have you tried them? I've had a set of 14" sr steelies on mine and at the minute have 14" 4 spokes on, and mine have all fitted over the 16v brakes :D

Wheel choice basically something fitting with the era of the car, nothing too new. Or just spray your astra wheels silver :thumb:

Thanks for the comments, yeh i love my car, as i said i needed something to go traveling down to bournemouth and back every week and a 1.3 carbed engine was not the way to go, it has saved me so much in petrol having the bigger engine in believe it or not!

yea imo it does need to loose that like!!

And I KNOW THE GRILLI LOOK GASH!!! that why i changed it, it came with the car but every SR grill sold on ebay goes for £50 and thats far to much then someone had one for £25 inc P&P so i was happy with that

lol ok i read the rest of the thread, im so glad you removed it.

Completely agree they are to dark, and have always thought that. and it has to be standard FTW! thinking maybe they should be silver really! or a darkish silver!

Just a bit of an update i replaced the track rod end because i though it needed doing :D?

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P4120047.jpg

also went to a breakers yard to break a mk3 spitfire for a friend but saw two calibra's so though i would have a five finger discount on them as we spent 160 already on parts! but good find i thinks.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P4120042.jpg
Then fitted a slim line fan as i didnt like the chunky one :)

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P4090029.jpg

Then recently bought a bottom end to rebuild for my c20xe and really after pulling it apart found out it really didnt need a rebuild, but bugger it im going to have it dipped and clean it up. and also have the crank balanced possibly. what you think?

still honing marks which must be a good sign, hardly a lip at all. Looks to be quite low mileage!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P4120041.jpg

this is the worst one and that because it has a few dents for some reason, other then that none of them are worn hardly at all. and there all GM bearings!

nova_saloon
14-04-10, 12:14 AM
lol believe me you dont want it :( its getting worse if you ask me. Its got a stress crack in front of the chassiss were the engine has been pulling on it. Then engine is a pain in my **** until i rebuild this new one and replace it. The paint is ****ed and needs a respray, The bonnet is the wrong colour. the battery tray is rotting through. Im almost tempted to sell it and see the back of it im getting that annoyed with it! Its my daily driver and i need an every day car so its not like i can put it away and take the engine out and do the much needed welding or do a respray or do this and do that. Because it needs time and money which i dont both have. But if i had another car i probs would, But that to require the money. so stupid. Plus under braking it making this crunching noise and i have no idea what the hel it is because i replaced the bearings and brand new hub one track rod end which i will do the other one soon. and it still aint gone. so bushes next possiby. grrr im angry with it, it pissed me off today wokring on it!

O yes going to weld in a new rear arch get two new font wings, may do the over rear wing, undecided on that so far. and i got the two freshest doors in my garage to then swap over on to it, Not a dent or bit of rust on them, So going to make sure they dont even come close to rusting by painting them properly and protecting them in the nesssary places. all i got to sort out is side decals and pillar decals, the boot decal i think im going to use the opel 1.3 GT one i got. but i got to finish this engine first before anything remotely like that happens. such a long list, and it being my daily is not gooooood
need fundage

get a proper sr boot vinyl mate it maybe gm but its not right imo i know its the european version but not right use upol mid grey for the grey at the bottom!! ive got a late sr bootlid vinyl but i need it lol!! nice to hear its being restored though!!

nova_saloon
15-05-10, 12:30 AM
Yes want it full done nice, should be doing all the respraying myself. not sure about the welding, not particually had to much practice at it, That upol x-plast stuff is the shizz, i think i already did a bit in my thread on it in here where i re-did the rear bumpers, but i went for the darker gray as i thought it looked better. nicer contrast with the yellow, then the lighter stuff, but may do, but its plastic paint i though, plus i like the texture of the bottom vynal. But with the boot lid vynal, cant get hold of one. this is the best i could do for now. need to start saving i think if im going to do this good, should be making a spray booth out of the garage i got to all going to be good fun i hope.

get it done mate!! and get the vinyl off here as they do a set thats not a bad match!! but yea that u-pol is the sh*t isnt it lol!! will be nice to see it getting sorted any way!! and ive got that u-pol on the bottom off my car and have had no probs but i want the texture also!! one off the lads off here knows a ex vaux painter he knows the code for the paint (bumper paint ive been told its called but dont know the code) that matches he had his car sprayed and they used the texture and it looks a mint match!!

awwww i want the beautiful texture and colour. It so is the **** lol. Not sure whats going on at the moment, got a load more pictures to get on here actually as i got awesome updates but i cant find the upload cable *duh*. I think because its the daily and all that, im jsut going to do all the welding that needs to be done in the engine bay and plate it up so its stronger, and make the engine bay look mint as funk for now. as i dont have the time and money so much at the moment, but we shall see. i want to start collecting panel and stuff like the sills and rear panels so that when i got everything i can just go nuts for a few weeks and have it all brand spanking new. then spray it up and make it look mint. Talking of spraying when i got the 2K paint today i said mustard yellow is so aweful they should really just give it away!

right it all started with cutting out the old battery tray which i wish i got a picture, but yes it was pretty bad as some get.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P6030134.jpg

and some welding on the old battery tray can be seen to your right below as they welded and long L piece to cover up old rust, which was a bitch to remove i must admit, but to get it in i had to remove the upper panelt o get the battery panel to sit down in there, as i couldnt get it in from the bottom!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020212.jpg

after relising how much rust there was across the bulk head i got miserable for a day or two looking at it because its a lot of work but i went sod it, get rid of it now you wont have to do it again! so i went mad with the electric saw!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020227.jpg

after cutting out all the rust across and down the bulkhead i made up panels using a VW Polo wing, (what there good for, Panels in my Nova :-) )

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020241.jpg

a good mate is always usful to hand, made him travel far, but that why we love him, and his beard!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020245.jpg

and this is his Skoda Fabia VRS, very hot

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020233.jpg

next make panels up to replace what rust i cut out.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020234.jpg

and welding them in

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020232.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/me%20n%20steven/P1020235.jpg

then test fit the battery tray to measure up how the other panels are going to be made, unfortunatly i dont have following pictures due to him taking his camera home :( but will get some batteries for mine when i get a moment. so i can show you the finished product!

pretty much the same story here, i ignored it the last time thinking it wasnt that bad about 2-3 years ago. and tackled it now. never seen any thread with someone doing it yet so glad i got this up. but still its was a bitch for me to do, because i had to takle so much of the bulkhead and make up new panels, took about 4 days to do. alot of it was looking at it putting my middle finger up at it but im glad its done, because it is minty fresh.... for now!. just this time i want to do it right so i only have to do it once. Dude, the servo arm is just 4 bolts, un bolt it, the rack is just 5 bolts (all of them to both 13mms) unbolt and take them off, you'll get a better job with them out the way. You wont have any paint edges to peel from..

Oh and take the ground strap off too! That's one bolt. A good paint job comes from good prep.

Bar that it looks good.

Is it base and clear your using? As the covers dont have much shine on them...

Oh and pig spring and headlight clips needed to come out too.. lol Good work on the paint tho.

nova_saloon
17-06-10, 08:05 PM
wasnt to fussed about the headlight clips as you dont see them plus the last lot i took out broke on me, so i dont mind. the pic tail wasnt removed i know but just im under a lot of pressure to get it done at the moment. and yeh its basecoat im using, you should read what ive been writing :D. but got basecoat because you get a deeper shine when i stick on the laquer. much nicer finish.

(captin perfectionist lol)

Benn
17-06-10, 08:38 PM
Yeah i've missed a few post a page back..lol

Its not about removing stuff to not get paint on them, its more so that you dont get a lip/crack that water can get under/might/will check..

Base and clear does give a great finish. I'm hopping you have lacquered it now? As base does lose it's adhesion. (few hours left max)

nova_saloon
17-06-10, 10:51 PM
oh bollacks, i was going to wet sand it 600 in the morning then do it!yeh i do understand about the cracking, should of really done it. but when i get some more time i will properbly take all thoose bits out and just mask everywhere but there up and give it a blow over. but it was getting dark and cold after i finished the last coat and didnt want to put it on cold. what you recon?

scott.parker
17-06-10, 11:04 PM
I reckon you have to base coat it again! lol

Shame looked OK.

But IMO you should have just done it as 2k so it didn't need a lacquer on it.

Scott

nova_saloon
17-06-10, 11:07 PM
yeh it does its a 2k basecoat, basecoat require a top laquer as you can see, because it looks so matte. where as you can buy the other 2k paint which has the laquer built in, but it doesnt give such a deep shine.

scott.parker
17-06-10, 11:54 PM
I meant a 2k solid, like on my mk1,as it's a better finish etc, you can flat it and polish it up for the shine..

Benn
18-06-10, 07:53 AM
Your thinking of Direct gloss and base and clean, both are 2k (2pac)

Both will give a great finish, but base and clean is a bit tougher in my eyes as you have the extra layer of lacquer. And not that it will be it shouldn't fade anywhere near as bad either.

As said in my pm, you'll need to flat it off with 1000 grit and re base it then lacquer not that long after. (20mins after last base coat)

nova_saloon
18-06-10, 12:21 PM
nice one Benn.

easier to do it in solid, but as said i wanted a nicer finish, and tougher as benn said

did you remove the clevis pin from the end of the master cylinder?? thats probably what was stopping it :thumb:

its lookin good for a home effort pal, good luck getting everything bolted back in :d

nova_saloon
21-06-10, 03:41 PM
aww that makes me sound like im doing a shoddy job. far from shoddy is what im doing here. and i just put the entire brake system back in. everything ws out including the clevis pin. like i said i tried kicking it and it wouldnt come out the bolts were off and everything. im not retarded. lol plus looks fine. taken the masking tape off looks great. so far everything is going back together smoothly. its almost done in just under a day just need dash in and then the engine goes in. yay the worst bit

Get an Astra GTE one they fit in better

nova_saloon
20-07-10, 01:49 AM
i do have an astra GSI one. still hits the back. so ive put that one on. the sqaured one. still doesnt fit. probs were i have done the battery tray and welded the back panel in i have done it slightly more forward or something.

nova_saloon

As he says /\

did that and it touches at the bottom. the battery tray repair panel, it is not the best of fits so it stuck out a little more and the sfi touch a little toward the bottom where you can bend, and if you look as the thread i had to slice that panel down the middle, and when welding it together i did filler over it to make it neater and it would just crack it all. so really its a loosing battle, i will jsut get a spare sfi box and modify it at some point i think thats the best bet? :thumb:

29-08-10, 01:00 AM
yeh the clunking i havnt found out what it is, but now its to believe its the gearbox bearings :'( which blows more then a hore. so checking the oil tomorrow to see if its low if its not then the gearbox is buggered and new gearbox. the fact of the matter is i never actually rag it ever to be honest. i use it as a daily and drive at 30-35mph everywhere in 5th lol

dj_wudgey
29-08-10, 12:26 PM
never that will be a bitch if it is matey!! hope all goes well like!! but still can hapan even if its not ragged matey age can be a factor two!! hope its not the box any way fella!!

nova_saloon
30-08-10, 12:09 AM
Lol it wasnt the box in the endi turned the rear gearbox mount the correct way but it raised the back of the engine up slightly causeing the lambda sensor to whack against the back wall cause and nasty vibration, so i swapped the gerarbox mount the wrong way round which is now the right way round lol. but am going to get a new lambda and a nut and weld the lambda sensor further up the pipe to avoid contact now

dj_wudgey
30-08-10, 12:51 PM

Dont do it...

One nova is enough, i wish i had never set eyes on my MK1, as i now have two novas to wast my money on, and i dont use either of them....

I say if you really want the XE out then drop a 1.6 on T40's least it looks like a 1.3 as it's small block, but will have more power without the silly consumption of fuel that you would from a tuned 1.3 etc..

Here we go as promised Wudge, not the coolest of updates, but made a real improvement on everything, stopped the clunk as well, still not sure where it came from but o well.

So basically i fitted all new ball joints on both sides(track rod and lower ball joint)

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190317.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190318.jpg

Then i fitted a full front polyurethene bush set WHOOP!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190312.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190309.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190319.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190313.jpg

and with that i fitted a recondition steering rack, Bigger WHOOP!.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/pirrip/P9190316.jpg

so pleased with the results, made it feel tighter and more responsive and one happy bunny as no clunk to. i got the rear poly bush set to put on now, which is sitting in the garage, i got 60mm lowering springs for the rear of the car. Then all i need to do is get some front dampers as mine are fudged as it sits lower one side lol. then i eventually have to get the rear disc beam sorted out, probs going to be a nightmare, but will look cool as funk :D then its get a new front nearside wing as i got one for the offside. then two rear wings, i already got extremely mint doors, then its strip and rebuild the body up nice and clean and paint. but that wont happen for a good while. but sooner rather then later.
