Well, I've been threatening to do this for a few weeks now so I thought I'd better make a start. I bought the car as a damaged 1.2 and converted it to a GTE.

It's been a good car and the little 1.6 packs quite a punch, lot more than I'd thought it would.

However, I've grown bored of it already and fancy doing something a bit daft so here we go!

There's not a lot of info on this conversion, so I've started this wip to show all my mistakes as I go, to try and help anyone else foolish enough to follow me!lollollol

All help and advice is much welcome.

Here's a few pics so far.

Just getting it in the hole was enough for one day!lol

Going to make a mount for the os chassis leg tomorrow. If I can bare the cold!

That was a 3.0 Saab engine, and appears to have quite a different inlet and exhaust setup than the X25. If you want a decent fit and proper job, I would suggest NOT following that WIP!!

V6's are becoming more common than 20XE's now lol

Is there no feeling from people that its going to be too much weight over the front to drive well?!?

I've never done it on been in a nova/corsa conversion so can't say... But I couldn't imagine one of them going through corners too gracefully?!?

06-01-09, 07:37 PM
actually they handle quite well, and are good so long as you set the suspension up right. btw, rj isnt just watching the thread, hes watching the car. ;)

X25 on F20 is less than 8kgs heavier than a 20XE.

06-01-09, 08:14 PM
the v6 was designed for the mk3 cav, andis a very light compact, narrow angle engine, the c25xe is its lightest incarnation, and weighs 225kg iirc. an xe is 235kg.

I think most of the engines weight is tied up in the flywheel! It's massive! I've swopped it for one of C20xe. Not sure if it's an early or a late but it fits! Does anyone know why the crank bolt holes only line up in one certain orientation?

Check out the difference!

thats an early "flat" flywheel, the holes are cos the flys are balanced so need putting on the right way. have ya loctited the bolts and torqued em?

novadoneitthistime
08-01-09, 04:19 PM
well, not much progress today. hung the engine in on the gearbox mounts and it all seems skew-wiff! Am I missing something about converting to big block gearboxes? I was running an f16cr box on the GTE engine and everything seemed to line up fine. I've spaced the diff mount out 12mm
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/baksteun_achter1.jpg
but it still seems to push the front end of the engine (where the belts are) towards the front panel. Is this normal?

Lee
08-01-09, 05:31 PM
You've got quite a lot of clearence there for a V lump :) You have to remember that you will have MORE clearence side to side due to the block only being 3 cylinders wide, but its going to be a lot deeper. Coming up through the bottom of the car you should have found it pretty tight between the rack and the bottom front panel no?

Hang on, im giving too much away here lol

General Baxter
08-01-09, 05:40 PM
the spacer is there, as its got a large block gearbox :)

novadoneitthistime
08-01-09, 05:45 PM
It's mega tight front and back! I've got a massive blood blister under my nail to prove it! hahahahahahaha!lol Bit of clumsy thing to manhandle alone. wish I was at work, with the ramp! I cheated and split the box off and put the engine in through the top. Wish i'd removed the servo first though:roll:

Yeah there's loads of room at the belts end! I'll bet a belt service will be the easisest thing to do on the engine when it's finished, because everything else is buried!!

I'm just worried it's not sitting straight in the engine bay. It'll annoy me everytime I open the bonnet if it's not quite right. Really deceptive though as there's nothing straight on the front of the car and the cam covers have funny shapes and brackets on them.

Sloth
08-01-09, 05:46 PM
id say the rear rubber mount needs undoing and prising backwards, or the holes lightly slotting. lee, yes you have mate!

Sloth

p.s try a builders level on the cambelt cover or a lazer aligner.

novadoneitthistime
08-01-09, 05:50 PM
the spacer is there, as its got a large block gearbox :)

I'm confused? (doesn't take much).

I've ditched the f25 that came with the V6 as it's hydraulic clutch and electronic speedo. Going to use an F20 in the final build, but i'm using the old f16 for a dummy fitting at the mo.

I still need to pack out that back mount when using f16/f20 gearbox.... dont I? I tried it without at first and the gearbox ended up fouling the NS mount.

Adam
08-01-09, 05:56 PM
Yes, most people use a spacer kit. One side of the mount has two spacers, and tother has one spacer

novadoneitthistime
08-01-09, 05:58 PM
Good thinking with the spirit level, great minds think alike! I've managed to set it level.

http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P1080037.jpg

Just struggling squaring it in the bay. Probably have to give it some trial and error on the rubbers eh? Times like that you need about 8 arms! hahaha!

Sloth
08-01-09, 06:25 PM
or use a set square to a reference point, or some string across the strut tops, and an intersecting string to align?

Jack
08-01-09, 08:18 PM
but it still seems to push the front end of the engine (where the belts are) towards the front panel. Is this normal?
Yes IMO, the V6 sits quite tight at the front on that end. I would guess that when taking the engine in and out you need to drop it slightly diagonally and towards the O/S before lifting the car over it ;)

Sloth
08-01-09, 08:29 PM

Hmm, yes, id guess thats probably the best way to do it lol

Looking at that pic mate, you are going to have uber bonnet clearence issues :wtf: Before you go ANY further, refit the bonnet and see if it can be shut with minimal grindage. Then you can carry on, but getting it 90% there and then discovering you cant shut the bonnet will feck you off no end!

Jack
08-01-09, 08:37 PM
Remember. If the bonnet doesn't fit, slam it repeatedly until it does.

If that doesn't work, take a grinder to the inlet lol

John
08-01-09, 08:38 PM
why not fit the c25xe inlets?

Jack
08-01-09, 08:43 PM
They don't fit.

Although... don't cav ones fit?

Sloth
08-01-09, 08:47 PM
the c25xe is the cav one. and just budge the bonnet, ala pug 205 autos, along the lines in it. and stop cocking about and update.

novadoneitthistime
08-01-09, 09:16 PM

That meant for me?

Like a glove! Hahahahahaha!

Jack

^ once LETs start to dry up and get old (which is happening now tbh), the saab HOTs will be quite an attractive option I reckon. Plus your average Saab driver is grandad, so think low mileage fresh engines with FSH :D

But in the meantime, dual head quad cam 24v ftw :D

novadoneitthistime

made some good progress today with my engine mount. (post some pics tomorrow).

Decided to make a new mount on the chassis leg lower down. It makes the bracket way way simpler, plus I was a little worried that the original wouldn't be strong enough. Especially after I found out the engine and gearbox are best part of a quarter ton. Chances are it would be plenty strong enough, but I figured while I've got the welder out I might as well weld in a little peace of mind.

Well, I've had another half day on the engine mount. Welded up my chassis leg mount. Poor little welder was flat out. Made a decent job, but i'll use the big one at work for the engine half of the mount.
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P1110044.jpg

This is as far as I've got with the engine half. Still got a load to do on it. once I'm happy with the position of the engine in the bay, I'll weld the mount to the chassis.

Bit worried about how much that rubber mount will 'give' once it's got the weight on it. I'll be mega p*ssed off if it drops so much as to make the engine look unlevel.

chimp007_uk
11-01-09, 06:55 PM
fill the mount with seekaflex (spelling) ;) solid mounts! OR just tack it on a few places and see how it goes on its own steam?!?

General Baxter
11-01-09, 07:12 PM
the rubber mount looks ****ed anyway

novadoneitthistime
11-01-09, 07:19 PM
Yeah it's not the best. It is about 18 years old though!hahahaha!
I'd love a set of solid mounts but there's plenty other things to buy first.

Might try the sikaflex idea. does it work well?

novadoneitthistime
18-01-09, 06:10 PM
Well had another lazy day on the nova. Triangulated up my engine mount (got a bit carried away), welded in one of the strengthening plates and finaly positioned the chassis mount onto the car. I'll finish welding them up with the engine out.
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P1180054.jpg

Little cheapie clarke welder made quite a good job on the 3mm plate. I'd say this is it's limit though.

18-01-09, 06:31 PM
What welding gas are you using?
And what amp is the welder?

novadoneitthistime
18-01-09, 07:00 PM
i think it's a 145 amp welder. just using the little crappy gas bottle it came with. think it's just CO2. Camera makes the welds look rusty for some reason

John
18-01-09, 07:02 PM
Good work, so how does the engine sit now?

novadoneitthistime
18-01-09, 07:13 PM
Well I've got it all squared in the bay. and I tried the bonnet again when I'd welded the mount and it still closes so i feel like i'm getting somewhere. Hoping to have all the seams welded and the rest of the plating kit done so I can paint this weekend. Then I'll have to figure out the wiring.

Now then, I've almost finished welding in my first strengthening plate and I've finished welding that mount. I know I only really need to stitch weld the plate in but I've seam welded it because it was going really well, and I always feel happier seeing stuff seamed. Also, my MOT man told me that all welded plates need to be seamed to pass. not sure if that's true though?

http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P1190067.jpg

I've done all the easy bits, but I'm not sure what to do with the bits underneathe the chassis legs. They dont seem to meet up to anything, but the rest of the plate was spot on so I dont know what to do?

http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P1190072.jpg
I'm using chris astley shafts and hubs, with the big CV joints. Thought I might as well do things properly. The veccy had an equal length set up, hope I dont regret not using it.

I was worried about the diff too. Luckily Corsakid has supplied me with a brand new tran-x plate diff!! I had a slipper in my last rally car project, and I cant imagine life without one now! The difference is amazing! Just need to find someone to fit it for me! hahahahahahahahaha!

Looking good, Yeah on my old one there was two added plates between the front chasiss legs and the floor pan, they were not really needed just added for that bit more strength, and every time my mechanic used to take if for MOT he had to tell them that as they were stiched! lol

Timing Belt (http://s415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/?action=view&current=P1290102.flv)

Glad I decided to do the belt. I was half tempted to do just bodge everything in for a blast round the block and do it all the engine service after I was sure it'd run.I must be getting sensible in my old age. I'll double check the timing when I put the new belt on.

MSD is a group that modified vectras for vauxhalls to make a special edition. They were the first ones to put the 3.0 cams in GSI vectras. They also made the st200 and st2000 special editions for vauxhall. I think it was all to do with the BTCC at the time.

lookin good mate was there a reason why you have got the x25xe instead of the c25xe???

Hi.

Main reason I chose the x25 was because I love those funky plenums! But also these engines dont respond very well to tuning, and the management of the x25 produces slightly more power than the c25 version. Also those plenums give a better torque curve, flatter. However, the c25 is a lot simpler and easier to wire and is a better fit in the engine bay, so for the extra 20bhp you take your choice. Interestingly though the c25 came standard with four 'A' cams which is more aggressive than the cams used in the later x25 engines. Both engines respond very well to the cam change you have planned and as they are basically the same engine the difference in power after mods is next to nothing.

To be honest there's not a lot in it, and it really just boils down to which one you like the look of.lol

novadoneitthistime
09-02-09, 08:16 PM

novadoneitthistime
09-02-09, 09:04 PM
might be the heat exchanger/oil cooler between the banks that's burst. Common fault on these, especially early engines. The cooler cores rot and leak the oil out into the coolant jacket. looks like a headgasket failure. But to be honest you have to remove so much stuff to get to that cooler that it ends up cheaper to buy a head set for all the gaskets you need. And if you've bought the set you may as well fit the head gasket.

Ah but you'll see what's best when it's running.

Ive nevr been a fan of the F28 TBH, especially when you already have lots of weight up the front.

If i were you i would just keep feeding it cheap F20's while you save up for a nice quaife SCCR of even just a SC box on standard ratios to keep using the V6's torque.

well, I got a bit more done yesterday, engine is pretty much finished now, just need a few hose clips and a gasket for the throttle body. I think I'll have to get one from vauxhall. I've got some gasket paper, but it's right next to the EGR port so I think it has to be made out of tougher stuff. Painted my cam covers in gold with gold holographic metal flake.

Cant 'lock' it though, (i'm halfway through a bolt on slam panel mod).

been taking it real easy over easter so not much progress. Fitted the bonnet back on, and now its got that front plenum on...... it doesn't fit. A quick 5 minutes with the grinder however, and it started seeing things my way!

I had to carve out a fair chunk to clear the belt cover and the dipstick.
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P4130245.jpg

The bonnet plunger wasn't going to work were it was so I drilled the spot welds out and moved it to where the safety catch goes. (need a plan for the safety catch now)
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P4130246.jpg

Had to chop a big old bit out the bonnet too, but I'll neaten that up before I repaint it.

But I'm getting there, I'm getting there

Yeah, could do if you're interested. They're not too much hassle to knock up in a couple hours work.

Any scope for removing the bonnet cable and catch completely and run bonnet pins/catches? This is what I did when the panel became too weak because I'd cut a fair bit away etc.

Love that engine bay!

Thanks!

Yeah bonnet pins would be the answer, and they do look mean! I just thought it'd be nice to have the bonnet secure if I had to leave it parked anywhere.

You can get lockable bonnet pins? Will be a pain to remove but if its only just for when the car is parked i guess its not that bad? lol

scott.parker

Cheep padlock will work through the bonnet pin..

Or on ebay theres some lockable ones for £13 p&p i got these to go on my boot.

anybody know what radiator I can use for a v6 conversion?

Jack
21-04-09, 11:10 PM
GTE etc one should be suitable.

novadoneitthistime
26-04-09, 07:08 PM
Well I've been messing around with the radiator today. Went and bought a brand spanker, 32mm cores instead of 22mm. Seems to fit better for whatever reason??? I love brand new shiny shiny meeeeeee!

http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P4260254.jpg

top pipe looks a bit stretched but I'll try and run it, see what happens.
http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp237/novadoneitthistime/P4260255.jpg

bottom hose could have been made to measure!! popped on no bother at all!

id get another top hose mate, with the movment in the engine it will probaly crack the plastic pipe from the rad. a normal hose looks like it would be ok on there. Good work though!

The Simps
26-04-09, 07:18 PM
yeah, chopped down standard nova one would fit that.

novadoneitthistime
26-04-09, 07:29 PM
Standard nova hose doesn't have the right diameter to fit the V6. I'll probably have to have a hunt around the scrap yard I call a garden to find something more suitable.

Engine is very very solid, I dont think it's going to move far, I think I'll just have to wait and see. maybe i'll leave the radiator loose so it can all move about hahahahaha

not updated this for a while. Got my exhaust 80% finished and now I'm starting on the fuel system. need an injection fuel tank as mine was a 1.2 carb in a previous life. If i'm going to be changing the pump for the one out the vectra tank, can I use either SPI or MPI tanks? Anybody got one laying round they want rid of for a good cause and a small amount of cash???

AlexW
24-05-09, 08:14 PM
The vectra pump is too big to fit a SPI tank isnt it? Im presuming the veccy pump is intank anyways?

stupot89
24-05-09, 08:45 PM
if a mk3 astra gsi pump is enough to run the v6 then use one of them as they fit in a nova spi tank :thumb:

I put a small piece inside the hose on my old nova let. The jubilee more than held it in place.
