Sweet those tabs should take the weight a bit better! I thought powdercoat would have lasted for more than two years.

Thinking about it its probably more like 6-7yrs ago since i has it last done, so its not done bad really.

Did you make the tabs? Or buy them? (If bought where from as i want to do the same)

HI Benn,

Bought mate from Rally Design.
There for a RWD Escort.

RD520 I think was the part number & only a couple of quid.

Hopefully will find out this week if they work. Seem ok so cant see why not.

Hi Dave

No dont have much knowledge on Aero fittings.
I have a good local Hydraulic company that has got all my Goodridge over the years. I just in this instance took the sandwich plate in & let them spec what i needed.
As for tools, no not got the proper Goodridge ally spanners so its just standard garage tools for me. Not ideal but does the job :)

Got some undersealing to do this week if its not too cold in the garage & need to spray rear disk stone guards again & few other bits.

Not really much of an update, but its all ive done so far this week!

Took ream beam into work & welded the new rear shock brackets on.

Dropped beam this afternoon at the powdercoaters & hopefully end of next week it will be back looking like new :)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/022.jpg

Might pop & drag it (literally as it has no rear wheels!) out of the garage as i want to re-underseal under rear arch whilst wheels are off.
Dunno i will be arsed as its sooo cold!

Benn
03-02-12, 08:51 PM
Erm dude the new mount not get in the way of the bolts (bolt holes..)

Looks great tho..

MARTIN KELSON
03-02-12, 09:09 PM
The bolts for the stub axle?

I took bolts with me & made sure i could still get them in before we welded them on. There OK :)

Benn
03-02-12, 09:58 PM
Ah nice, they look right in the way.

See mine has studs that sit thru, so i dont think i could use the mount sadly :(

MARTIN KELSON

Went and did a bit this morning.
Couldnt really be bothered as it was so cold but need to get a few jobs done before the beam comes back so i can put it all back together.

Put some underseal under the arches & started to spray the rear disc stone guards.

Was really too cold for spraying so did a little then called it a day and came home to the warm!

Quite happy with it considering it was a freebie favour they owed me :)

Had a day on the car today to get it back together & on its wheels

Anti Roll bar back in.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010408.jpg

Bushes back in

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010412.jpg

Special tool do up the hubs!!
Since i welded the new shock brackets on i couldnt get the allen key in, so cut one down :)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010411.jpg

Next was brakes back on

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010409.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010413.jpg

Took longer to get back together than it did to get it off being careful not to scratch it.

Need to lower the rear coilovers slightly as the new brackets raise the rear up slightly.

Took it for a quick spin around the block just to make sure it all seemed ok then tucked it back into the garage.
That was it half a days work!

Quite enjoyed myself actually :)

Hi

No progress, quite the opposite to be honest :(

Went to adjust the rear ride height today as having the new brackets welded on the rear beam it was sitting ever so slightly higher.

Got to the rear offside & found this.

Bid annoyed as i have no idea how its happened.

Anyway turn a negative into a positive as i dont really think black wheels suit the car so may aswell get them all redone i think.

What colour should i do them?

No silly comments like green, yellow etc as that wont be happening.

Anthracite maybe or silver or any other advise please.

Cheers

No worries mate, always here to give idea's, and imo anthracite's done to death, and will still be too dark for the car paint, and silver is to oem for the look of the car, and old school bright gold is just horrid so i thought, Humm bronze!

There is a Mini dealership not far from me actually.
May take a browse & see.
Not got anybody able to paint them though unless wheel refurbers can do the colour.

I could do them for you through work but It wouldnt be cheap. Id have to check but off the top of my head I think Its approx £60 a wheel plus vat. And although Ive never had an issue paint is never as tough as powdercoat which I know you've used In the past. Drop me a text/call If you want anymore details mate.

Wheels loaded in the car for their trip to Birmingham tomorrow to go to 'the wheel specialist'.

Still not sure on what to go for on the colour. Iam hoping when i get there a wheel on display will catch my eye.

Did see on the way home tonight that cought my eye, a black Subaru with Gold wheels, now that looked nice but now sure if iam brave enough to choose gold!!! :)

Please help :)

The dark bronze/gold should be given some thought.

Full on gold might look abit too much.

lol what about silver?

Liam

I would deffinately go with the bronze / matt gold. It reminds me of the midnight purple R33 skylines.

Not much of a update but iam still messing before it goes back on the road.

After having the beam powdercoated & new bracket welded for bottom shock to mount to i wasnt happy with the way the rear shock now sat in the bracket. It must be slightly straighter than the standard Nova so didnt want to nicely poke out the top.
Cant really tell by this picture but it looked slightly forced.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010545.jpg

Quick mail to Gaz & they were boxed up to be sent back. They are swapping the bottom bushing for a rose joint so it can go at the correct angle. Hopefully they will be back next week.

Also picked wheels back up today.
Went in the end for Gunmetal grey with a semi Matt laquer.
Not happy with the centre caps so will be speaking with them tomorrow.

Yea Chris not happy with the caps.
Spoke to them today & i have posted them back. The say it was was because the wheels were powder coated & caps wet painted but they said they should have been a closer match than that.
Anyway there going to see what they can do. I said if you cant get them any closer then to do them semi matt black so it doesnt look like a poor colour match!

I totally agree it would look better with lower profile tyres but unfortunatly they dont do them :(

Tried a few different 'road' tyres over the years & other than the Yoko A539 back in the day all have been cr*p so i opted for a semi track tyre but on the down side iam afraid the looks took a slight hit.

Yes, but he had another inlet welding onto it

MARTIN KELSON

The header tank is also Bailey with an additional inlet welded then again powdercoated crackle black :)

MARTIN KELSON
05-03-12, 06:52 PM
The oil catch tank on the left, yes you can buy from Bailey Motorsport.
The header tank on the right is also from Bailey but modified with extra inlet by myself.
Both though as standard will come in polished Alluminium as i had them powdercoated myself in black.

They couldnt do the Bronze like on Jap Volk wheels that i quite like so i went safe.

scott.parker
05-03-12, 07:18 PM
Dont get me wrong i could see where you were coming from as i know you wanted PC finish etc, and i was not slating what you have done, just thought a nice color would of been much more dramatic as the car is a bute mate.

Ever thought of getting another set of wheels with "normal" tyres on??

MARTIN KELSON
05-03-12, 07:26 PM

I think I would have gone for a darker grey as it would have contrasted better with the the jewel violet. However I wouldn't at all say they look out of place. The stickers are hard to place as the spokes are slimmer towards the outer edges and are curved which gives the impression their wonky when their actually not I know that back from when I fitted them to hua. New stickers are available cheap on eBay though Martin in a variety of colours.

Howdee,

Been tatting in the garage Saturday morning fitting my new SBD nylon pressure relief valve to overcome the issue of the standard one sticking.
Had it from Nova-Tek a forum member on here.
According to the distructions the oil pressure seems about right. Couldnt hold it at 4k & take a picture! :)

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010717.jpg

Arrived today from Gaz, my rear shocks i sent them to have the bottom bushing replaced to a spherical bearing.
Really pleased with them. Look like new! They replaced the bearing obviously that i asked them to then also the spring cups, top & bottom and new top rubber bushes and all re galvanised to look like brand new. Cost of £70.00 for the pair and including the p+p which i think aint bad.

Just got to make them fit now :)

Total width where the shock mounts to the beam is 33mm & these with the spacers either side of the bearing are 36mm, so will take the spacers to a engineering company we use at work tomorrow & see if they can turn a few mm of for me.
Hopefully by the end of the week it will be back on all 4 wheels & ready for some road tax! :)

Puddle of oil on the garage floor :(

Genuine brand new Nova roof skin minus sunroof ready for its next reincarnation with 'proper' cage.
Just need to store it now without getting damaged. My dad was well impressed it will be stored at their house!!

Also picked this up earlier.

Got knows how they managed to get all those bits in the back of that Skoda Superb, proper load lugger!

Who will fit the skin, you going to get Ade to do it? Wouldn't fancy that job :S

The skins are crimp welded on, are you goind to try and do it that way or just spot weld it?

Got some pics of the one Dave France has removed, so i have an idea how to do it, so probably do it myself!! :)

When i fit proper cage the roof becomes non structural so can be bonded back on.

Yea when i meet them the Skoda was full of my roof and Marmite!!!

Bond the roof on with the proper equipment and It will be fine Martin. We've been bonding them for ten years or more and now have to do quarters/sills too as Its the official bmw approved method of repair. If you need the materials drop me a text and I can sort you some out no problem.

Jonlem
09-05-12, 10:40 PM
Olly Hewitt would probably be the person to write that review, he used his car a LOT with one of the kits.

Specky also runs one and has done for atleast 18 months which has helped with his 60fts by keeping the wheels pointing the right way lol He did say you can visually see the difference on the rollers as cars with the kits have no wheel movement where as ones without look like the wheels are going to make a bid for freedom.

Hopefully Martin will be able to do a review as most of the kits I've recently sold are on cars that are still WIP

Cheers for the positive feedback on the quality though, the guy I use takes a lot of pride in his work.

Need to enlarge the mounting holes to 1/2" as per instructions & i didnt have a drill bit so that soon stopped play.

Right went this afternoon with good intensions to get the one side done, back on its wheels and turn the car around ready for the next side in the week.

You know those jobs that should take 5 minutes but go to **** and take far longer than they should.

Well fitting the bracket to the cross member was one of those jobs! I drilled the top to bottom holes out as per instructions from James, all's going well so far!
Now because i run a chassis strenghening kit & there is a quite thick plate in this areathat the bolts go through this meant the bracket will now sit further lower (thickness of the plate) than a standard Nova, not a problem until you try to screw the M10 locating bolt in the front - It dont align anymore :(

Only option is to machine a few mm from the ally lowering block (i dont have equipment to do that) or the M10 hole elongate it a few mm into a slot so i could screw bolt in.
I went for the latter option but the 5 minute job now took about 2hrs so never actually got to finish it & back onto its wheels, that will be a job for Monday night where all i have to do in theory is bolt it all together now, another 5 minute job..................................Hopefully!!!

James on future kits would it be worth having a 'slot' instead of a hole to cover both with or without chassis strenghening kits?

Martin

Jonlem

Good to see your getting them on Martin.

I'll have a word about having that done, the kit is designed from a car running a full plate kit but shell tolerances can differ which this is obviously a case of.

Sorry if it's been more hassle than you expected !

Hello,

Didnt have long tonight in the garage as its my Nieces birthday but found a spare hour as i wanted to get the wheel back on ready to turn it around.

Didnt go totally to plan as i was putting new bottom ball joints on & couldnt get the buggers to go in so maybe wasted half hour pushing & shoving that!

Anyway its together but i dont have a allen key to fit the bolts supplied, there either 9mm or imperial so there just finger tight for the moment but temperarily together.

After my issues of the engine never reaching operating temperature of around 90degrees i decided to investigate & found this:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1010935.jpg

Thermostat stuck slightly open so replaced that with new & took it for a spin. Much better on the temperature, sat at around 80degrees.
Came back & now found this:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/074.jpg

Damn CV boot split & covered driverside wheel in all its gunge!
So Saturday morning having never replaced a CV boot before i set about the job.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/078.jpg

Surprised how easy the job was.

The Mrs then came round & parked on the drive infront of the Nova & asked "do you realise youve jacked the car up into the garage door?"
Bugger, lifted the car & as it tipped i was closer to garage door than i thought.
I how have a crease smack in the middle of the wing & marks in the paint :(

Surprised with how i wasnt really bothered.
I think this may have now pushed me to rip it to bits again sooner rather than later. I was going to wait until i sold my house & moved but now iam thinking when it comes off the road in October to just crack into it. :)

Ever since the engine went back in i've been meaning to get it onto the rollers as advised by John Toovey who mapped it on the dyno as the the map will need a tweak once installed.
As iam off this week i've booked it into 'Mikeanics' in Congleton tomorrow afternoon for a rolling road map tweak session so fingers crossed all goes well tomorrow afternoon.

Will let you know how we get on with it.

Right the Nova has been to 'Mikeaniks' today at Congleton for a couple of hours on the rollers for a mapping session.

Bit gutted that Mike wont have people watching him work, was looking forward to some video and pics of it on the rollers. Never mind as i know what its like with somebody watching over your shoulder.

Here are the results before & after.

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/041.jpg
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/040.jpg

Apparently a couple of lucky moments!
One the throttle stuck wide open. Where i had coiled the excess throttle cable it got cought jamming throttle wide - Now cut off.
He went to balance the boddies so unclipped the filter to find a trumpet had come loose & one of the screws was floating about - If that would have been sucked down the throttle body :(

Drives now much nicer & much better on fuel as it was overfueling quite abit.
Its about 95/98% there but to get it spot on would mean messing with the verniers & that would need a day on the rollers & not just the couple of hours. Maybe next time :)

Thought i would have been over the 200bhp barrier but never mind.

Interesting drive back down M6, sat in 3mile traffic jam for 45mins watching all the temperatures on the Stack!! Never sat in traffic in it before but iam glad to say she behaved faultlesly.

I couldnt believe it either Matthew, what a muppet eh.

As for turbo power, the pennies wont stretch to it mate :(

So far the tiebars are feeling good. Tracking has been done but needs a full setup to get the advantage but so far so good.

It was time today to do a bit on the Nova.
Always like to do something to it over the winter as not to get bored. The 420 miles ive managed in it this year isnt enough to keep the enjoyment flowing.

The front end has always been the point of the car that annoys me the most. The fit of the front wings, the grille & bumper just never fit right so i decided today to take it apart & see what i can do about it.
I have brand new genuine GM wings to go on as the ones removed are patern items, i have a used GM grille to try & the rest will just be some jiggling around to see what i can do or find out why it is like it is.

Last few pics not sure if the front panel has had work before. Other places there were no signs so not really sure.
Think its time for a new radiator too, 21yrs and showing signs its time for a change.
Need to get wings out of the loft & start to see how we get on.

Im sure the genuine parts will help the alignment out no end Martin.... I had similar problems with the red one until I sourced genuine replacements for it. Plenty of patience/jiggery pokery and you'll be sorted. ;)

You will never get perfect panel gaps, especially if its mostly as it was from the factory! Don't get me wrong, you can get good, straight lines, but it's about fiddling and getting with the bolt on bits... It's not got the build quality of a BMW etc!

MARTIN KELSON

I know it wont be perfect, its a 22yr old Nova with **** tolerances, but the bumper, grille & wings were terible.
Where the MKII wings meet the grille show it up worse so it needs a fettle to see what we can do with her :)

This.

I work with brand new cars so when i was rebuilding mine i drove myself mad trying to get spot on gaps and the flush to be as i would check at work! lol it aint never going to happen! But, there is alot to be said for attention to detail. It is one of my little jobs to see what tweaks i can make to improve the uneven gaps in the areas you mention.

Had an hour spare tonight so braved the cold & into the garage i went.

Picked a bumber bar up saturday morning so i went to remove the old one.
As you see by the pics the brackets that hold the bar to the shell have at some point been bent.

new one

old one
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/311.jpg

Its a start anyhow to why it may all fit like a turd.

My next question if anybody can help me, the bumper bar, what way around does it go on?

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/312.jpg

Slots in the bar to the top or the bottom?
Mine has been removed at some point & just want to make sure when i trial fit it back together i atleast have the basics in the right place so any pics gratefully received.

When i get a spare day over Christmas i will dig the new wings from the loft & fit it back together & see what i can do with it.

Thanks

Spent the afternoon in the garage to trial fit the genuine wings i aquired a few years ago that have been sitting in the loft

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1020752_zps1f3596c8.jpg

Holes didnt lign up which maybe a good thing as the alignment before was cra* with old wings so this may be a blessing

Next was to push it into some daylight & fit other side

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1020754_zpscb303191.jpg

Couldnt get the bumper to fit. Only bit i was unsure of was the bumper bar, which way up it went so took it off & turned it around & hey presto

Quite happy with this side. Not perfect but loads better i think than before

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a220/NOVAMARTIN16V/P1020758_zps6cbaa0c8.jpg

Drivers side not so good, better than before & maybe able to get it closer

I want wings & grille (obviously) & maybe bumper & bonnet, also thinking if i do that to do the boot too & remove the wiper arm

Fingers crossed iam on the right track

Its amazing the the detail that has gone into this, nice under the bonnet especially.

I can't get why you guys don't use mudflaps if even just to protect your lovely paint, it seems to be that mudflaps are less popular over your side of the water.

You need the headlights/flashers in as well Martin to see how they line up With the new parts also. If their as good as the rest then I'd send it for paint and fettle the final fit afterwards. Looks pretty good as far as a nova goes though! ;)

I was tring to find some new headlights too.
Quite hard to come accross, think ive found one, just need to find another!

Right i will pop bak over next few days & stick the headlights in & see what we have.

Nick, is there actually much adjustment to be made with wings, grille etc? Didnt seem alot i could actually do to make hem better regarding alinment?

When I was struggling with the same issues on the red one I had to use genuine flashers/ headlights as well as body panels to cure the problem. Alignment will come through patience as it's more a case of press/pull/ bend into position and nip up until your happy throughout. I have seen washers used underneath the headlights to raise them and flashers shaved around the edges also to suit but its not ideal. Go genuine throughout and even if its has had a tidy slam panel job in the past you should be somewere near. I will check the loft for you as I may have a spare mk2 headlight which you would be welcome to.

Nick.

I did add some washers to pull the drivers wing out slightly

The rose jointed kit from from 'Jonlem' on here
Think it was about £500!!

Never thought Dave about the adjusters to be honest if manual or electric.
Never use them anyway so I suppose you can mix & match if worse happens & there a mixture!

Got O/S manual, N/S electric - both brand new Valeo - Would prefer another manual N/S if you need to swop
