View Full Version : here we go, big block v's small block (not the normal thread)
errr who agreed to that? lol
points 3 and 4 are the wrong way around lol
Amen to that!
As for rule 15, I think you will find that big blocks are the staple diet of the club administration, in which case, they must be the best :)

Hummm....
I think Baxter made this thread just to get us all talking about a topic that's never ever really going to have a right or a wrong answer too...lol
As his question was not one that can be answered in one word.
So............... i think it's safe to say though that if none of had a biased opinion and we had to give an answer to these question's.
{Q-A} I'm looking to try get more power from my 1.6 8v engine, what sort of money would i have to spend to get it to a reliable 160bhp?
Or
{Q-B} Would i be better trying to fit another engine with close to the power from standard?
We would ALL no the answer we would have to give,IF were being sensible and some one wanted to do one of they above on a "tight" budget.
Scott

1) Mark is a poo poo eating male chicken muncher
2) Lee is good at killing engines, the environment, and enjoys being burnt
3) big blocks are ghey
4) Small blocks are great
5) meh
FIXED :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: lol lol lol
(i may be being forced to fit a big block but will always be a small block guy at heart ;))
*edit* good job you changed your mind on your last post olly, i could always find a way of fitting a small block to see it happen lol

In that case, I dont think you should be allowed to fit one!!!!

Dan - I stand by it, but it sounded arrogant when I typed it, hence deletion. lol
Wasn't sure how to put it without it sounding off lol
Arogant or not Olly, we're all friends here, no one will take offence :thumb:

big russ was a nut case in a small block. jesus
i remember him nailing that touring car prepped cavalier at llandlow coming out of the tightest double bend into the final straight (after chichane)
what ever did happen to russ?
remember him saying he was selling up due to house moving or something like that.

Yup i will have to agree with Dan on this Olly, as i witnessed this cray fast little car being driven well, and very fast caning alto of expensive well kitted out machinery lap after lap at Silverstone a good few years back now.:)
Class car, didn't it have the Swift engine in??
Scott
nah, was a 1400 16v.
argh silverstone, he broke a drive shaft didn't he. came back on stand and repaired it and went back out again.
Yeah, tbh I doubt very much anyone could touch Bigruss if he was still running that car, not ever Dar lol
Never in my life have i heard anything scream its ass off quite like that. 9000 RPM and 180bhp out of a 1400, with a mentalist rally driver behind the wheel!

Thats what made me think it could of been lol
OK fair enough lol I said when I smallblock Nova laps Donington quicker than me, I'll break my car lol
I know it's not around Donnington, but to put your level of performance into perspective:
You took part in the 'Road Modified Production Cars 1401cc to 2000cc' at Curborough with a fastest time of 36.66s
Lawrence Bond holds the class record in the 'Modified Production Cars up to 1400cc' at Curborough with a time of 33.15s.
That was with an X14XE Nova with a similar spec to CP's old lump and I believe it too was built by Velos. I know the class rules are different and he would have spent alot of money, but it is still a low capacity small block and very impressive.
I still luv you though! :thumb:

My fastest time was 36.66s :p but it wasn't as quick as 33.15s lol

Lawrence Bond... Didnt he pilot a saloon?
No it was a std shaped hatch. It was white IIRC and ran on wide eurostyle racing rims that I think he clad in Hoosiers rubber.
To be fair to Olly who drives to the events, Laurence's car was reputed to be very light and defo wasn't driven to eventslol His car was a specialised hill climb machine which he used to take on the mini's in his class.
I was told that he also used to bend valves fairly regularly cos of the revs he was running:)

It was the handling that impressed me most about Lawrence Bond's car, absolutely unreal watching it through the bends, changed direction like a scaletrix car

out of intrest whats your fastest laptime round donington?
p.s im not taking up the challenge........yetlol :p
Mine was 1 min 28 secs in a nova using a stock xe, coilovers, lsd and A539's, That was in 2005, I'm not even going to look into what lap times the Tigra was managaing LOL
The fact it made it round was a miracle

Fooook me, thats quick for a std xe. How stripped was the shell? What brakes were you using?
Car spec was at that time was :
1991 Sr Shell
Polybushed
Rose jointed Tie bars
LMF V6 brake conversion, stock pads, ATE blue fluid, braided lines
Spax RSX coilovers
Concentric top mounts (later swapped for eccentrics)
Quaife LSD in a F18
Genuine 41k Discpack xe
Ashley Group A system
Powercap
16" Mo's with 195/45/16 Yokohama A539's
The car ran stock SR interior at the time although we removed the rear seats and bits for that event, no cage or perspex at that time either.
We finished building the car at 2am in the morning, the first time that engine had seen proper use in 7 years was at Donny LOL
I would just link you to the build thread but I've recently organized my photobucket account and thus all the links are now wrong so heres a few pics, you may remember it.
The morning of Donny 2005 :

It was a awesome car, mentally fast for a stock xe, even faster with the gas on it and it really did handle well, Keith Robinson will no doubt back me up on how good it felt round the ring, I will admit some suspension advice did help a lot towards us doing that sub 9 min lap but we were doing 9.03's before I got some advice which was only to run it much softer than I normally would.
Poor car, shouldn't of broken that one really
Nitrous was never used for anything more than road and 1/4 though so all times are off gas :)

I remember that car and that day at Donny. It was bloody fast little car! Handled itself very well.
Didn't you tow the car home on rope? lol
I towed Keith Robinson back from the ring on a bar, now that was a mission LOL
I'll never forget looking in my mirror to see Keith nodding off in the drivers seat
I'll dig out the "Wake Up Keith" video of when I did the rolling burnout pulling out of a services
F**K YEAH
it really did handle well
Without rosejointed stuff? Whatever next????!!
Looked lovely though mate :) Its annoying looking back on cars you get rid of and wonder why you ever did. Its always a better idea at the time.

lol lol lol
Well it had rose jointed tie bar brackets, that must of been the reason
Can't agree more though, I don't even want to think of the cool cars I've had and sold
hmmm a 1976 Mk2 Escort Estate in Beige with 24k on the clock   drove like new, had more hidden rot than the titanic but was still the best car as I couldn't go anywhere in it without being stopped and questioned about it, the Police even stopped me once just to have a sit in it lol
Isn't there a thread on this subject, I'll contribute to that rather than go anymore off topic :thumb:
Quick car then for what was not a huge spec list....
Hmm, interesting :D
I swear by stock xe's, one of the best engines ever, I can't deny that the less weight of the small blocks helps with handling but to get a small block to keep up with a big block costs and if you spent that on a 20xe engine you would have no chance of catching it in any small block.
Depends what floats your boat, that nova was my daily driver for over a year, it had its problems along the way but only self inflicted, 4th limiter into 3rd didn't help, one lean moment on the gas cost me a set of pistons and the head gasket failed after towing Keith back from Germany, trying to race Clio V6's whilst towing probably contributed towards that LOL
