I have read some of this thread, my heart goes out to you. Its heartbreaking to see someone in this situation, and I dont think that anyone would wish this on their worst enemy. Im sorry to hear about your plight and i hope that things pick up for you both.

My thoughts are with you mate, and i think you should let Rachel's family know that there is so many strangers out there giving there best wishes to them.

i have been following this since you first posted, you have done more than most would have even considered. Your a top bloke and need not feel any bad feelings for your desicion, the fact your still there for her shows your loyalty and pure heart as a decent bloke!

Keep ya chin up mate, as others have said there is alot of people thinking about the both of you :)

Thanks folks.

Just back from the hospital, wishing her a happy birthday. Her room is FULL of baloons, cards, pictures and all kind of teddys etc etc. Kinda got to me. She was very sleepy as i imagine shes had everybody up there today.

Seemed very relaxed.

Hello folks.

Just though i'd update you's on how things are now, a year on since the accident.

Rach is still in hospital, and according to one doctor, she will remain there for the rest of her life. There may be some rehab type facility for her, but she will never return home :(

I had a VERY strange experience the other day. As you know, the 13th was a year since the crash. I couldnt bring myself to go and see her as it still hurts alot and i still struggle with it. On Friday last week i had an interview at a call centre, which is just up past the hospital in Dumfries. I got a taxi there and was there at bang on 11am which was cutting it a tad close but still . . . . . After the interview, it was a nice day, so i decided to walk back home which is a bit of a trek as i stay on the otehr side of town. I was walking towards the hospital and was thinking to myself whether to go and see rach or not. Do i? Dont i? Hmmmm . . . . As i was thinking that (and this is no word of a lie) i looked over to my left into the hospital grounds, and there was two ladies pushing a wheelchair up a path towards me with a familiar face in the wheelchair. It was Rachael. I walked over and said 'ahh thatl be Rachael then?' to the ladies and they looked confused. I told them that i had been going out with Rach at the time of the accident etc and they were instantly in awe. I kneeled down and said hello to Rach and her eyes opened wide. The two carers were gobsmacked. They were so shocked at the connection that they offered to leave me with Rachael for half an hour, without so much as asking my name or anything!

So after that i left i felt sure that there is definately someone/something up there watching over.

I also have just taken on a job at the local vehicle recovery yard to help out while a few of the lads are off. I was over one side of the yard today, and saw that Rachs car is still there in exactly the same place i saw it last year. And its still in a shocking mess. . . . .

Anyhow, thats pretty much all i have for now, and probably will do for some time.

I cant express how much this thread and all the loving messages towards Rach and me had/has helped me through this unvelievably hard experience, which has shaped my life in more ways than i had imagined it ever could.

some of that is terrible to hear, and some of that is brilliant to hear.

you sir are a proper man. and i would hate to go through something like this, i couldnt handle it at all.

Not alot you can say but good on you for still being there for her. It must be very hard.

Regarding the car still being there, i assume there is still legal proceedings taking place in some way shape or form?

There is still a court case pending in February, so it still needs to be at hand just incase. Even then, no one died in it so there is no need for it to have special treatment. Its not nice, but thats the way it works unfortunately.:(

It's never nice seeing a car in which someone has been seriously hurt or worse, i know that i used to hate seeing them at my old work but i can't imagine what it must be like knowing the person that was in it :(

I used to wrk at a salvage yard and we would get cars that people had died in. They get no special treatment bar a blue sheet over them. After that, we have to dismantle and de-pollute them as we would any other car. Its all about the money.

I do have a new girlfriend now, and its been tough to move on at times. Shes cool with the whole situation though which helps alot.

I used to work at a tractor dealership & one came in that a motorbike had hit at over a ton.. we found all sorts of stuff.. & the smell was the worst.

At least you are still there for her, thats really what matters. You have to move on at some point but at least you havent just forgotten about her like some people may do.

Yeah i started going out with a lass in August there. It took a bit of help but were getting there. I still have my moments, but i dont let on to my missus so much. Shes very understanding of it all which helps. Shes offered to give me lifts to go and see Rach too.

If she reacted to hearing/seeing you in that way, maybe you should visit her more often pal? I know it will be hard for you but you have been through the worst of it and you obviously sparked something there for her. Im sure Racheal would appreciate it... :)

just spent the last hour reading this and i have had tears in my eyes from start to finish, i cant believe what you have had to go through and totally understand your decision to 'move on' as it were, do the doctors know the full extent of her damage? or is it just a case of more than likely permanant?

cant of been easy and i like all the others have huge respect for what youve done and are still doing.

Still have enough respect for you mate, you've made some tough decisions in the last year but it's still nice to see you are there for her.

Only now can I partly imagine the extent of the accident having seen the car (looks like a 106)

Time can be a great healer and I hope this is the case for Rach.

lost a very good friend about three years ago to a similar crash, my hearts with you! as you said drive safely :( as already said. dont give up! shes a fighter by the sounds of it x

its been over a year mate, unfortunatly as much as it pains me to say a chance of a full recovery is slim he also says the doc said little chance of going home again, of course we all hope and prey she does.

Small Update.

Rach is now up in Edinburgh where she is receiving lots of physio etc.

Being honest i have kinda fell outta the loop and not 100% sure of whats happening. Kinda struggling what with it being Xmas etc, as i keep thinking that this time last year i was in the worst place i have ever been in my life.

Going and seeing Rach doesnt help me in the slightest so ive backed off for a bit till i can bare it.

I have the court case looming on the horizon which i could really do without.

Just realised this post is all about me. I wish it was different.

Dude i would try not to beat your self up about thinking more about your self, As you say you've been through it now, your almost on the other side from the sounds of things, and your moving on with your own life, it's not you being selfish or nasty, it's just unfortunate that it all had to be this way in the first place, you couldn't stay with her the way things are, im sure her family understand,and im sure most other guys would of had less contact in a shorter time scale then you kept it going etc..

Just my thoughts on things, i know i cant really put my self in your shoes but i can say how i see it.

I don’t read books but I have just read this start to finish. Stan mate, good on you for everything that you have done. Takes a lot but im sure you have learnt a lot and now have a new out look on life.

I know I dont know you and im just echoing what everyone else has been saying on here but you really are a great sounding guy. and you shouldnt feel guilty or ashamed of anything that you have done. you could of walked away as soon as you had heard how bad her injuries were and the possible long-term effects but you didnt. You stayed by her side for months and all that you did probably helped her recovery to what she is now a lot faster than she would of done had you not been there
you probably know more than anyone else that she would want you to be happy in the long run and you should be glad that you got yourself through the dark days and are still around to visit her.
I wish you all the best for the future with your new girlfriend and also that you are happy with the friend that you now have in rach.

Me and the new Mrs split a little while ago. I kinda guess Rach was still on my mind alot, and whenever the slightest arguement arose, i took off. Simply cannot deal with stress anymore. Ive walked out of two jobs and now a relationship in an attempt to get away from stress. Im coping ok with it for now . .

Think you need some time to chill dude, you've had a lot of weight to carry on your shoulders. Going from one relationship into another when things are considered 'normal' makes things difficult but you've gone into another relationship after one with some rather extenuating circumstances, so it's bound to take a toll on you.

Stan you truely are a very brave and decent young man and you should be proud of yourself.
I really do hope that Rach continues to improve...i also hope that you Stan can still move on with your life and find some peace you truly couldnt do anymore than you already have....and the fact that you still care about Rach says alot about you....give yourself a huge pat on the back.

man ive read i couple if bits on different pages and ill feel for you man. you are a seriously strong man and hold in there feller, its funking awesome to hear that she is up :). i had an incident this year when my brothers best mate borrowed my brothers car, hit black ice at about 20mph got hit side on by an oncoming car and died instantly. this happened in feb this year and the passenger started walking off of his crutches properly today.

Struggling bad of late. Real bad.

Bumped into Rachs brother last night in a pub who was completely ****ted and didnt seem happy at all with me. I took bad to this is walked home then proceeded to cry my eyes out.

Got the court case coming up on the 1st Feb and i am not looking forward to it at all. I want out.

The court case is coming up for him too so don't feel too down on him and yourself. I'm guessing last night was a one off so don't think this is the way it's always going to be.
It will be hard going through the court case, but there will be a time when it is over and done with, this time is getting closer every day.
It's sh1tty time of year anyway and you need to make sure this time off you have is used positively. stanly mate, im really sorry about what has happened to rach, unfortunatly in life we are subjected to trials and tribulations that make you question your life, i lost my mum last year, i was 20, had a brother of 15 and a sister of 12. She past away a day after my brothers birthday and had been fighting cancer for three years, it shattered us all but life must go on, you got to get back to work mate and off the drugs, they may make you better at the time but they wont help you in the long run, youve got to be strong and make Rach proud, do you think it would make her feel good if she knew you where this down? everything happens for a reason and what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. i wish you all the best in life mate a respect your courage for talking about it.

I have had word that the driver of the van is being charged with careless driving.

He was 1 metre over onto the other side of the road and on his phone.

Court case is tomorrow. I have to appear. Not looking forward to it at all.

Stan, I've just read through the whole story and im deeply touched by this.
I can't even start to imagine what pain and trauma you have been through and is still going through to this day.
I can understand totally why you ended it with Rachael but I don't think that you should have went out with someone so soon after. I think you just need some close friends ?
I really do hope that you get back on track regards of your life mate and I really do hope that Rachael has if not all then has most of her life back too.

sometimes the leagal system does work and work well, about six months ago on the M74 a father and son going to work in a van were involved an a road rage incident with another van, the other driver ran the father and son off the road killing the son, then dissapeared!! the police found him a few months later in SPAIN and have brought him back to face charges.

mate i have never been touched by an online thread in my life,but seriously the best of wishes are to you and rach,even my gf who does not clearly know you or visit this site was clearly in tears and very touched by your courage and commitment! your a fcukin strong man!!! i envi you mate, seriously,i just couldnt go through it,i could feel the tears reading the read,1 day id like to meet you n buy you a beer! if everybody was like you this world would be a far better place,i really hope you are coping(easier said than done).

Only just read this all way through after seeing it pop up over and over again on the forum with people commenting... Mainly because i really wanted to be able to read a bad start turn into a happy ending.

Really sorry this didn't happen :(

I feel so bad for you with everything that has & is happening.

Hope you keep up that strength you have inside you and i'm sure you will overcome all this in time.

Can't ever imagine how you feel and i hope i never have to be put in that situation, you're a stronger person than i will ever be mate.

Best wishes Stan, you story thus far may well have helped people on here who have suffered, and also made other people count their blessings.

Sounds you were at a very low ebb at christmas time, all i can say is if you are prescribed sleeping tablets or similar, do take them.

Your stress reaction that you described sounds normal, i get these symptoms too to a degree, and run my life accordingly. A Bezzie mate of mine took his own life last year, and there are a lot of questions unanswered about it. I have 'shelved' dealing with the trauma, and don't quite know when it's going to resurface. Not happy days.
