As a follow up from Here (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=102467) i thought i would start a project thread.
Its totaly standard (At the min anyways). Basic Basic spec, no clock, parcel shelf, no rear ash trays, You get the idea.

I plan to just sort the small amount of rust and get it through a mot, put some tax on it and use it for a week or so then maybe sell (Only maybe).

The engine is no longer seized, it was due to water in the fuel. It no has no compression, so i shall be doing a leak off test tomorrow and also checking under the rocker cover.

Here is some pics.

Engine bay looks good! At least the problems are mostly cosmetic.

Not looking bad at all mate, at least the rust is only in its very early days, should be an easy fix.

hendrix
06-08-08, 12:32 PM
Looks exactly the same as my first car except mine was a 1ltr. May still have the white trims somewhere...I'll have a look at the weekend

Yep, looks pretty solid.....

Novas have a way of hiding things though, so give it a good checking over.

AlexW
06-08-08, 02:00 PM
Steve - I really hope so, the bits of rust ive been doing didnt really need doing but its nice to know its done for at least the next 10years. I will be cleaning the arches up and giving them a good coat of undersealer.

Hendrix - Let me know if you find any, if i can find a few that are just marked and havnt got bits missing il buy them.

Brainsnova - That is my 1st bit of welding on car, its not great and even my brother says its the welder not me.

Matt - Ive had a good look around it and like i said ive only found the bits ive mentioned. Ive just been sorting a bit behind the rear bumper too.

Later today i will make a start on the passenger arch, i decided i would poke it and my finger went through.

You should have rubbed it down and stuck some primer on it lol

Looks like clean welds though

brainsnova
06-08-08, 03:57 PM
its akward trying to get the angle on the welder in the tight spaces.

AlexW
06-08-08, 04:02 PM
Welds look good, I agree on the tight spaces thing, if i have to do any it will be sent with my mk1 to have it done.

Spudly
06-08-08, 04:10 PM
Wire brush it and throw some paint on it and that should be fine, dont use primer though as its porus and will allow moisture through!

AlexW
06-08-08, 04:27 PM
Anyways, Update.

I fillerd that new patch to make it look a little better and hold it together a bit more lol I also etch primerd it.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0790.jpg

Also cut out, welded in and fillerd another new patch on the rear, I will be sanding down the filler and giving it some etch primer and then Miami blue (Mixed by halfords   )
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM0791.jpg

Arch rust.

Looks like a good shell. A lot better than some 'minters' these days imo.

Corsa brakes ftw!!

AlexW
06-08-08, 08:52 PM
Ive finished the rear panel bit, its not preety but its not seen and it does the job. The halfords paint seems to match better than most i must say. Tomorrow i plan to try one of my brothers ideas, He thinks there may be water in the lifters as there was some water in the oil. So i will be removing the cam.

I will also be attacking the arch, ive decided to cut out a square and hope there is enough metal left behind to sort it all. My welding isnt getting any better but i plan to do the arch so the new bit of metal sits behind the front outer skin and grind the welds flat and a skim of filler.

vaughanmc
06-08-08, 09:14 PM

AlexW
07-08-08, 09:10 PM
^^lol

Well head gasket has gone. So the last idiots who fitted it didnt do it right as it looks like its been done not so long ago. And they didnt use new head bolts too, So i dont think that helped.

Done a compression test on it and it had somthing like 200psi on 1 (it was still going up but im not intersted in the proper reading). 2,3 and 4 went up and lost compression straight away. So that means the piston rings are Ok, but the head gasket isnt sealing. (Well thats what my bro said anyways)

I will be stripping it down tomorrow and im going to get a mate to weld the arch as i dont want to put a load of filler in there.

ade
08-08-08, 12:32 AM
looking good matey - welds look good! The 1st one though did you leave it tack welded or did you finish it off? Go back and finish it if not!

Anything around the bottom of the car after youve etch primed it and then primed over that give it a good layer of chassis back and then shutz it. Especially on areas that'll be covered with bumpers!

Ade

AlexW
08-08-08, 10:06 AM
I did go back and put some more weld on it, but keep having probs with my crap welder, but it does the job, it hasnt fallen off even with me wacking it about, I did also put some welds on the back of that panel. It will be getting lots of undersealer on both sides. The rear is now painted and the otherside will also be getting lots of undersealer.

AlexW
08-08-08, 03:21 PM
Ignore my head off post. My bros mate (Who happens to be a engine specialist) said that i should try it before i take it all apart. So i did, It starts and runs. I need to buy a 1.2 injector but it ran great.

Its nice and quite, no tapping. Cant run it hot yet though, due to needing new head bolts.

So im over the moon!

Just need to have the rear arch sorted and do the Cv boot.

AlexW
11-08-08, 10:09 AM
I may end up bodging the rear arch, otherwise it will be left for a month or so (when my mk1 gets welded) As for the cv, im going to use a spare shaft and just change the leaking boot (Brand new cv too).

Anyways, rubbish little things have got done today. Changed the spark plugs for some nearly new ones hoping it will sort the idle/start problem. Which they seem to have done.

Gave the clutch cover plate a clean, but main reason for this was to see how badly worn the clutch was.

AlexW
01-10-08, 04:59 PM
Im thinking of lowering it but for now i just want to get the problems sorted.

Ive just got back from the Very first time ive driven it further than half a mile. Found a few problems, like the speedo reads 90 when your doing about 70.

The tracking is off, the wheels need balancing. And a couple of little things like i need to sort the drivers side speaker.

vaughanmc

AlexW
04-10-08, 06:25 PM
Just to update, Nova has been used over the last few days by me, my mum and my brother. Seems to have a few problems, like the speedo being way out (sorting it next week). Apart from that, it seems to move about all over the road but hopefully that will disappear when the tracking is done.

Its been nice driving it but im not using it everyday yet.

Steve
05-10-08, 01:56 PM
I would have thought the tracking and balancing would be at fault with ive drifting about. Whats the problem with the speedo then? only trouble ive had with them is after you remove the needle its about 10-15mph out.

mines always been out by about 20% lol reads around 35-38 when the gps is on 30ish, and i'm following someone at the same speed through a speed camera. Think most speedos over read from factory though, keeps the manufacturers safe I guess.

Steve- Problery but im going to get a set of tyres then get the tracking done.

MK999- Mine flutters about like mad, goes from 70-100 while doing about 60mph. I had to fit a ciggy lighter to use my satnav which is what im having to use for the speedo.

A) 2.0 Brakes wont fit under your 3 spokes unless you "Trim" one of the two.

B) What seats are they and what subframes are they? Astra GTE on Nova Frames? Why not try and space the front of the drivers seat towards the door slightly? Fitting a few washers and if required a few longer bolts should allow you a bit more space.

After weeks on end of putting it off, over the last 3days ive finished my spoiler.

Primerd it yesterday and sprayed in miami blue today. Im very happy with the result too. Few little inperfections but nothing too bad.

Boot lid will be removed sometime over the weekend (sunday problery) for a number of reasons.
A) Change the glass
B) Fit The spoiler
C) Repair the dent/deep scratch on it.

The spoiler just requires a bit of t-cut and polish. Its not great but i dont care, its a daily driver at the end of the day.

AlexW
15-11-08, 07:23 PM
Aye it will do. Put some laqure on it today, pleased with the results.

Picked up that interior today, got more than i was expecting.
Seats, Mint rears (Again), Mint passenger seat, Drivers seat with a little bit of wear on the bolster (already have a replacment), Door cards, Black sill trims, Black centre console, glovebox, undertrays, fuse box cover, Side skirts, Head rests, plus more dash parts and a few other things..
Didnt have time to take pics of it all, just got home, piled it into each car.

Front seats fitted;

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1127.jpg

The door cards have holes for speakers in, which i was a little annoyed about but figured i could just stick some in the holes to fill it.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1126.jpg

Some of the parts i got:

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1129.jpg
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1124.jpg

I also trial fitted a GSi bumper i got a while back, its totaly batterd, but didnt cost me much. I need to find somway of attaching it to a beam but shouldnt be too hard with a bit of glue and cable ties, it needs spraying and a couple of badly filled crackes etc sorted. It wont look great, but i dont care.

Haha I want a 1.4 16v, but cant be botherd with all the work atm. 1.2 FTW

Which front panel?

Ahh right, just gonna add the bottom gsi bit to it then?

Nope, im cutting the cracked or damaged sections out of the Gsi bumper and then cutting the same sections out of the pov one. Plastic welded and fibre glassed in. Easy huh? lol

AlexW
19-11-08, 02:54 PM
Thought i would just add the progress of my bumper.
Got the cracked section cut out, going to repair the other cracked section as i cant get the screws out..

Here is the main damage.

http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1134.jpg
Yes those shinly bits are screws ground down.

Pov spec bumper just before cutting
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1137.jpg

And the cam battery went flat, i continued and cut the same section out of each bumper, last night i fixed another crack on the otherside of the middle, fibre glass on the back and flexible filler on the front. Today i started to sand it all down, once ive got it all sanded il put in the new secion and fliller all the dents etc
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh30/AW_06/HPIM1145.jpg
Check out how messy that room is!

Edit: Forgot to add the reason ive had to stop is due to my sander dieing. Broke the gearthingy it think.

Comments please

Steve
19-11-08, 03:09 PM
Funny how mk2 sr bumpers are the same as poverty spec ones! lol wouldnt it be easier to just cut off the gsi lower valance and attach that to the pov spec bumper? Looks like a bitch to cut a bit out of your gsi one then try and make it look decent.

AlexW
19-11-08, 03:17 PM
Well it would mean cutting it just below that strip. So would be harder infact.

jimbob-mcgrew
19-11-08, 03:18 PM
man, can we all send out a prayer or something for this man.. hees bought about 15 bumpers trying to find a good one and he's havvin to resort to this.

AlexW
19-11-08, 03:34 PM
lol Wasnt quite 15, but i know at one point i owned 11 bumpers.

This is my 3rd GSI bumper, the FG copy i had was crap, 2nd one never turned up (reported to ebay), and now this one.

Edit: Just had my sander apart, found out the connecter has ripped itself to bits, but it was made in 1996! And the motor was number 288 666  lol

Near future shopping list:

Bonnet, doors, bumpers and skirts panted.
Grill
Wings
Uncut Gsi door cards
Cone filter
Tyres

Things to fit etc:
All of the above
256mm Brakes
Braided brake hoses
Electric windows/central locking
Cd changer

Next year i plan to take the car off the road and fit things like:
Pas
Corsa servo.
Corsa wiper motor
Corsa washer bottle.
Relocate the batter to where the master cylinder is usualy.
Maybe a full respray

Comments on my ideas welcome.

28-11-08, 06:02 PM
sorry to be a pest do you need a template or what would be the best way to mark out where to place the clips just that ive got mines to fit and would rather use the clips than bond them on

AlexW
28-11-08, 06:33 PM
Im going to stick them on, so ive put the clips onto the skirts and am going to place them on the car, hold them there for a while :thumb:

vaughanmc
28-11-08, 06:35 PM
You'l be holding for a good while then - Me and my dad tried

Clips onto the back of the sideskirts then a line of double sided tape

Even with full force on the back of them it barely touches the side of the car

Far easier clipping them on, less chance of them falling off as well :)

AlexW
28-11-08, 06:40 PM
The reason im only sticking them on is due to the car getting a respray next year maybe.

The stuff (cant remember what its called though lol) that i will be using to glue it on should dry in a couple of mins so, I will be using double sided tape too.

That dent needs pulling out abit! And get that inside mirror plate fitted properly. lol i'm a fussy so and so when it comes to stuff like that!

All the dents need pulling out, got a new bonnet, door and wings to go on, just need to get the passenger rear quarter done (Already have the repair panels as the arch is a big buggerd) and have it sprayed.
That plate is fitted proplery, the stuff on the inside has come away but i have an idea for that when i get around to it.
