If I want to advances the timing do I turn the Distributor towards the front of the car i.e. anti clockwise or towards the rear of the car i.e. clockwise.

May be totally wrong here but if I remember correctly advance is clockwise
Engine turns anti-clockwise so to add ignition, move the spark further away from TDC you would turn against the direction of engine turn so as the Plug says clockwise, as the spark will happen earlier/more advancved in the engine revolution.
I'm on standalone management and have not set up a distributor for years but that makes sense to me!! haha
