    My banister doesn't sit flush against the wall. Newly plastered. Any ideas how to fix?

    If you are going to gloss it do the above, if you are stripping to natural wood and varnishing then you'll have to either live with it or get busy with the plane.

    Can you guarantee its the skimming thats out? Ie a big 4ft level over it or a straigt edge?
    Only trouble with caulk is it shrinks if its a big gap..

    If you caulk it paint the caulk with the paint you paint the walls with. If it's a big gap and it shrinks once it dries then just put another layer in top.

    And that's more flexible so it'll follow the walls contour? Might look a bit daft on top of a handrail?!
