Default Storage solution for the bench grinder...

Due to the layout of my garage I don't have an overly large workbench...

With the vice and pillar drill taking up a fair bit of room I was struggling to find a place for the bench grinder , with only a small amount of space left...

Putting the grinder here would use up the useful space...

And putting it here would mean that the sparks and debris would flick into your face and eyes , not good...

I was considering getting a fancy mechanism they use in kitchens to move kenwood mixers up to worktop level...

But at £130 for the hinge brackets , although a nice solution, it was a cost I could not justify.

So with a little more internet searching and a few head scratching moments I had a brainwave.....

First job was to clear off the bench the vice and pillar drill....

And position the grinder where I wanted it -

you will note that the bench top is made up of 3 wooden planks which was handy. Time to remove the middle one and put in some additional supports...

And then chop the middle board into 3 parts..

Refix the two ends of the planks and ensure that the middle part can reverse...

And then the magic happens - re-attach the vice and pillar drill and all seems to be as it was...

BUT NO .... flip over the middle board and hey presto, one bench grinder...

It sits in the unused space under the bench...

Quite pleased with how it's turned out !

Imo they want to be on the edge of the bench so larger items can dangle at the face.
Would a pedestal not have been better?

You're right it is a bit of a compromise , the outer plank has too much of a lip on the frame to make it work. I haven't really got floor space for a pedestal tbh.

If I need it at the edge for something long all I need to do it lift it up to the edge of the bench and g-clamp it , like so.....

Its better than being sat on a shelf not being in use at all !

Nice solution, I used to have my bench grinder tucked away and clamped the spark guard in my rotating vice when I wanted to use it. Kept it nice and firm.

I would agree for most cases you'll want it on the edge of the bench.

Nice way to do it. Mine is always in the way and to far over one side which means polishing somethings is tricky.

I bet the case of even the polisher is polished; I can't even mock gclamps as a tiny one is currently help cure a leak on my engine!
