You see this is one reason why i dearly miss my old job as a fax repair man. Before the company diversified into AV, i would sit and download music, films and porn all day, surf the (old old) PVG forum, then go and compare films and porn with my manager, eek out the best bits and send them to the MD, and then at the end of the day, so long as all my work was done, we would have a massive network game of quake

We used to have sections of racking with nothing on them, just a pillow for afternoon kips. Smoking was allowed in the office. One of the engineers used to bring a bag of whizz with him and eat it with a spoon, and then get angry with himself and throw fax machines against the wall! 100% entertainment all day evvery day

The money wasnt great, but I have NEVER been so motivated to go to work since

I think thats why I went self employed. I couldnt go and work for a company where you could get sacked for the stupidest thing.

    A) Did they warn you that you internet usage was being monitored?

No? then its an iligal offence to sack you, as by law they have to inform you that your being monitored and you have 1 month to adjust from recieving written notice of there intended monitoring. If they dont inform you, then they are breaching the data protection act and breaching your right to privacy. After this they must persue regular disaplinary action verbal, written, written\sack

    B) Are you viewing any unauthorised sites?

    C) Is their anything in your contract that says your not allowed to use it for personal use?

I think you'll find most companies have an internet usage policy, which will be part of the T&C's you sign up to when you join.

For example, mine says "excessive or inappropriate use of the internet is not permitted and will be considered as a disciplinary matter. Use for illegal or offensive purposes is not permitted and will constitute gross misconduct."

As does mine, to the word.

Beginning to wonder if I should log off though?

Hope you get off Hendrix, not the best thing to have to tell people (other half or parents etc) that you were laid off for 'serfin the net' yo.

    andreas you silly ****er!

read all the points above and they are pretty much all valid points.

remember, if you haven't been given anything to sign that your useage is not allowed (even 18+) then you claim stupidity.

they cant discipline you on something they have failed to advise you on. and if they are going to persue the method of miss-use and have monitored you for several months, then they need to inform you of this action. as it is classed as entrapment and not giving you any counciling to the matter.

as mentioned earlier, if you have signed something. Appologies and say it'll never happen again.
if it comes to a point were they are going to go down the route of sacking you, ask them if they will accept your resignation as this will save the hassle of the process.
    but
if they try to pursue this and you have had no policy about not using computer, then say. Let me go and speak to the citizens advice bureau and ACAS. As i think i am being unfairly treated with no policy been given to me. I admit i was wrong to use this, i have had no councilling and feel unfairly treated.

    until you hear them speak.
