    Default power gains!

my dad and i are building a 1.4 spi rally car, he is hunting down a set of 40's with inlet manifold etc. But what else can he do to get a fair bit of power out of the wee engine, like cam, 1300 head etc? Can i get bits from other nova engines (cam for example) to get more power? What cheap things would give me power gains? Also if we put the 1300 head and 40's would we need to put a different coil etc?

    Thanks

1400mpi head, round port carb inlet.

Sr cam, or even better a 285 fast road cam from the likes of piper or kent

a set of arp rod bolts would be a good investment.

if youre going vcarbs youll have to ditch the spi dizzy and ignition amp and run an sr one.

also if you go carbs you'll need a 1.4 carb coil/dizzy/ign module......

but as said, 8v's are really losing out now to the 16V boys so your not going to have a competative car...

They don't sell optimax any more anyway it wouldn't really net you any gain unless you fettled with the timing. And then you'd probably be best to leave as is and use bog std 95

i ran an 8v for 2 years and couldnt keep up with the top end of the class
dropped a 16v suzuki lump in instant power and up there
better with the 1400 16v if sticking with vauxhall

yes i am doing stage rallying. Wanting a quick wee nova like, i have a 2.0 8v sitting there and that was going to go in but i thought that would be too much power. What engine is the best way to go? i just have a 1400 sitting there so thought it would be a good option. Would like to put a 1300 gti swift engine in but what do u have to do/modify? I heard they were rare and expensive but very fast in novas etc.

2.0 8v forget it never beat a sorted mk2 escort using a warrior / red top etc etc
1400 16v vaux with bike carbs is a good option
or suzuki 16v but like you say getting a good one isnt that easy but you should be rebuilding it regardless they rev well see here for what to do its not that hard or that expensive(in the eyes of motorsport)
