right then, when i go 50 then the front end seems to thrum a lot. and when i go at 70 it does the same bbut stops at just over 70. hmm weird. could it be the bearings???

Its the wheel bearings change them quick or it will just get louder
IF it's a wheel bearing it will get louder when you corner and the weight transferes to the faulty wheel. Are you sure the wheels are balanced?
It's the bearing's i just had to change my right front bearing on my 1.4SR. Go to Halfords for one it cost me ?24:99 also get a haynes manual, this is the method i used, because it's cheeper than going to a garage.it takes about a day to do but it will only get worse if you leave it.
