every wire should go on in the same place. even the old 1200 starter will fit. it is a straight swap. did you swap the gearbox too?

1, check you have clean earth from engine to chassis (shell)
2, check that you got power to big terminal on starter
3, check that you have power down signal wire to solinoid when key turned to start (little wire)

if you are unsure you can always bridge across from the main power supply nut on the starter direct to the signal terminal on the solinoid using a bit of wire/old spanner etc.

if it cranks this would prove that you have power to the starter and a ok earth back and that you need to find why you have no feed to the solinoid

i took the 1300 engine out of my mk1 astra estate which was auto, changed the flywheel (need to buy a clutch) and put a f10/5 on it ploped it in the bay and built it back up and wen i tryed starting it it just clicked like the battary was dead so changed the battary and no clicking or awt i knocked the starter still nothing put a wire from the signal/switched wire and touched it on the live side of the battary and still nothing so im thinking it can only be down to bad earth so il try that first today then il go threw all the other things you's have put up.
thank you all very much for your reply's its most appreciated (sp)
