rev counter is it stuffed

got a rev counter today ( second hand no instructions) much cheapness

its a autogauge with shift light, coming out of it are 4 wires green black red yellow

ive got the red to + black to earth and green to the neg side of the coil.

its also got a switch on it for 4-6-8 cylinders there are also i thin whit and thin black coming from a different hole (dash lights maybe??))

the only thing is the gauge only revs upto 3.5k??? is it just that is gubbed or have i done something wrong??
