OK, not to worry you but REALLY check that water.... The water temp guage doesn't work very well without water..... Just a warning
bad shifting is down to the clutch not adjusted enough or the selector is mis-aligned.

As the column goes down between the pedals to the flex joint there's a 10mm bolt. Undo and remove this completely, you can then pull it free of the car.
