*INFO* Stitch weld,chassis leg mod & plate kit positions *WITH PICS*

Seems to get asked a fair bit, so here are some pics for pointers for the positions of the welds needed and where the plates go. Hope it is of some use to people!

P.S. i think alot of these pics i copy and pasted when Dave/Bert did his, so hope he doesnt mind me using them! :)

Alternator mod in chassis leg. Doesnt need to be this much, but can help if work is needed, or engine moves to much!

Bulkhead welds. Be an idea to remove carpets and have someone with a wet cloth sponge on the inside. I did, just as a precaution.

Turret and inner wing welds *note, no strut tops present. I you are putting these on, you can weld these aswell*

With the HH plates it is also recomended to weld the holes aswell. You may also find you have two plates left over with nuts welded on: these are for if you are using a sump guard IIRC.

Here's some more pics to add. I put in an additional cut out for the bottom pulley too. Makes working on it that much easier. The holes on the plates sheld really be welded too.

them welds are they mig'd or tig'd?

mine are MIG'd on a proper commercial jobby.

Slight alternative for the Chassis Leg mod requiring less cuts, less welding and less additional material.

From my experience loggyboy that often isn't enough!

I guess every car is different, but on the three ive done theres been no issues, as due to the angle of the chassis leg (when viewed from above it comes moves away form the engine as it comes forwards) so making it that deep at the forward edge is pointless. The only time it would need to be that deep is if you retain the multi rib pulley which is a fair bit deeper than the V pulley ones.

Blue line = typical 'deep cut' mod.

Loggyboy, completely see what you're saying. If it works then it works :thumb: Some people are more than happy using a big hammer :roll: which seems a bit pikey to me.

A hammered in chassis leg actually looks neater than cut/boxed imo, as it blends in better if you get me

I attacked mine with a hammer. After reading through this, i'm debating weather to cut and weld??!!

Did you ever box your rear mount Oli?

The best and most factory way ive seen it done is to heat the panel up (alot) and gently bend the panel in. Il see if I can get some pics of mates minter LET whose is bent like that.

What do you do about the two long bolts that go thuoght the tie rod mount after you have welded the plate on?

refit fit them in the same way.

You may have to drill down the hole and through the plate you've welded on. Remember to ignore my pic on the 1st page as I put mine on upside down! :roll: There meant to g underneath the crossmember not on top.

welding ym engine bay this weekend and putting in my plating kit, how far should i beat it in or cut it so ihave clearance for a redtop 16v?

wont this failan mot is they spot a huge crease in the panel next to the engine?

not if you do a neat job

No, creases in the chassis dont come in to an mot.(no matter how untidy it is) And with the engine in place you wont see it.

Would it be better to seam weld around the plates? or just stitch them in?

seam will be fine. you want to add strength but not make the shell too rigid. its designed too have some flex.

i seemed around all the plates and around the turrets but stiched along the length of the chassis leg

Thanks guys. I'm in the process of adding a chassis plating kit to a friends car, there seems to be loads of plates, i haven't quite worked out where they all go yet!
