No. 1L/1.2/1.3/1.4 have 28 inners.
GTE/TD novas have 22 inners.
MOST gsi's dont have 22spline shafts, they have 28 ones.
I thought all outers are 28 spline, and its only the inners that vary.
Think your're right there
gte, early gsi, td novas have 28 outer 22 inner splines
1.0 1.2 1.3 1.4, have 28 outer and 28 inner splines
you can tell by looking at the inner cv joint wether there 22 spliners or not
ok then i have set of nova shaft 22inner and 22outer so i take these are gte late gsi and td yea
thanks
are you actually counting the no of splines itself with the cvs removed?
they cant be 22 inner and 22 outer, if they are then they must be corsa gsi ones
basically whats said above, all novas are 28 outer an gte, td ect are 22 spline inner.
If they are 22 both ends then you have corsa gsi / sport ones
Which wont fit novas
You lie so lol, from what people are selling on ebay an advising other people on conversions you wouldnt think that they didnt fit.
Another way to tell is the shafts with the 22 spline inners have a balancing weight on the middle of the longer one. In most cases anyway.
or look at the cv joint itself :p, its easy to see which are which without taking apart
We need pics.
There was some a while back, but cant find them.
yes indeed, about half the shafts I see on ebay are not 22 spline
Agreed. Even scrappies are none the wiser. When steve ordered his, we ended up with 28 spline shafts instead which fecked us up completely!
I normally look for the balance weight on ebay, if its missing its a good shout its the wrong shaft.
Do you know why that is? Its because most people wil count the number of splines on the outer part of the cv joint ( the on that goes into the hub). Ah that brings back memories of 30mins of my life I will never get back, tried to explain this to someone over the phone an they were what can only be described as truely stupid.
My 1.2 shafts originally had the balancing weight though Lee...
someone get pics an all will become clear
ive got both, a set of gte shafts and a set of 1.4 shafts, ill put them side by side and take a pic, a set of gte 22 spliners is easy spotted without even removing the cv joint
Aye, the cv's a different type.
I just cant actually see the difference in my head, so pics are required :) Lol
the part where the Cv boot fixes is smaller on the 22 spline ones where as teh boot is the shape size as the cv joint on the 28 ones
Ive never seen a 28 spline shaft with a balance on it, or the groove it clamps to. Could have had a shaft swap in its past for whatever reason. Also, what year was it? Manufacturers are known to raid the parts bin towards the end of a production run. Ford are best at this, I think they fitted at least 5 different alternators to the MK4 escort lolQuote:

Interesting that! End of production run though, thats normally when oddities happen.
this is a 22 spline inner! the boot never gets as fat as one normal ones!

My H reg TD had the useless 28 spline inner C.V's. Going against the consensus that TD's had 22 spliners fitted.
it was hit and miss really! what they had in the factory. but maybe someone had them changed before if the c.vs went?
CV's OR SHafts?Quote:

my " NOVA GSI SHAFT J REG 1991" with balancing weight in the middle ??

my CORSA SHAFT 1.2 L REG 1994
so are all small block shafts 28 into gear box and vary on 22 28 into the carrier ??
both those shafts you posted pics of are 28 spline ones
somebody said that not all gsis had 22splines, was this just random or did it depend on the year, mines a 92. would it of had 22s then you think?
and also, a bit random here but seen as were talking about shafts, if fitting a gsi engine into a 1.4, do i need to swap the hubs over aswell as the shafts? sorry if it sounds stupid Lol.
No as the 22 spline part is on the shaft not the part of the cv that goes into the box / hub.
The hub / gearbox spline all stays the same part the big / smal block differences.
thanks phil i was getting the cv mixed up with the shafts i understand now
thanks
GSi's tended not to be fitted with 22 spline shafts.
^^ as craig said m most gsi's did'nt have them , ive normally found them only on "h" reg ones :thumb:
The AMK cataloge lists all 1.6 gte/gsi as having 22 spline
It must be wrong, as Carl said i've only ever found them on H reg GSi's, the J and K reg ones i've converted have had the 28 spline ones.Quote:

It means that you just need to swap the inner CV's and they'll work.
For a 'big power' engine or track toy though it might be worth fitting the bigger hubs, cv's and shafts that places like Chris Astley sell, if you start tearing up the normal outer CV's.
