Lucky/Unlucky?

I had a serious heart attack today..

me and dad have been fixing rust on the nova by welding in new plates etc..

well..all was alright..till my dad came running in shouting "MEL! HELP..NOW!"..and guess what? yup.. my car was on fire! :o

My dad had been welding underneath the rear seats (without me knowing, and with the seats still in ffs) and the rear arch carpet caught fire, which set my seat on fire..let me tell you, i aint moved so quick in ALL my life.. :lol:

after a lot of panicking, and the passenger side door being locked! and countless mins of shoving endless water onto the seats, the fire was finally put out (thank god).

I thank god that the car is unharmed, apart from burned rear seat (the 60 backsection of the 60/40 type seat).

so cant quite work out whether im lucky..or unlucky :lol: i have very sore eyes, and chest pains/find it hard to breathe cause of the smoke :cry: but on t'other hand..my car is fine :)

and btw, cambridge, i want your "car burner" crown..cause i definately need it now :lol:

the tard that welded my engine bay up did that on the inner chassis legs and set fire to the passenger footwell carpet

then the next day did the same thing to the drivers footwell carpet :@

Setting fire to things is funny. I set fire to the roof lining on the SR when I was de-guttering it.

But yours aint funny mel, shame you don't wanna strip it, that would of been a perfect excuse.

lol, its funny NOW..but wasnt at the time..i was so panicked..

i am just grateful its the seat (and wheel arch carpets, lol) that went up, and not the actual car itself..otherwise all the hard work we've done on it would have been wasted (and expensive!)..lol..and a much loved mk1 :wink:

and i will say to anyone doing ANY welding near or in the car..to make sure the thing is TOTALLY stripped lol..

Definately very lucky to escape only needing a new rear seat.

i am extremely lucky the whole thing didnt go up..

Technically Mel, your dad should get cambridges award.

Oh well, at least you have an excuse to remove the rear seats :)

its like a good luck thing to set light to it.

i set fire to mine again on saturday as i was welding up the floorpan to the bit that goes verticle to go over the fuel tank.

lots of smoke and flames lol, but its totally stripped now so no damage done, and anyway i wanted to burn the seam sealer off lol

if you insisit on welding with stuff in then have someone fire watching with a bottle of water

ive set fire to my car twice (both times the passenger footwell carpet) while welding. It makes the day more fun.

I only set fire to a barn, not a car. That was with matches tho, aged 8. lol :o

lol, Ste, i never knew my dad was welding, otherwise i'd have been watching with buckets of water (i always do)..

Jim, lol, i want the crown, so he wont get a look in :wink: unfortunately..i dont want mine stripped, so it'll be replaced..eventually :? but, in the mean time, it'll give me an excuse to get it up the 1/4 mile once its on the road without um :lol:

Stu, the seam sealer is brilliant to burn :wink: (been there, done that lol)

That's one LUCKY escape...those thing's get out of hand WAY quick!

I remember driving to northampton one day (before all the dualling was done), and saw this guy standing outside his car with the TINIEST bit of smoke coming out of the sunroof......

5 minutes later I came back, and there were fire engines everywhere, and the car was more or less a blackened shell! :o :(

Still...I stripped all my interior out to do the prep for my welding...and nearly set fire to the headlining with the spray from the grinder! :roll:
