*HOW TO* repair a MK2 Hazard Switch

Mk2 Hazard Switches are prone to stop holding in, making a piece of folded up paper a vital tool in Nova Mk2 ownership. lol

However, taking it apart and tweaking it to work correctly again is a simple (if fiddly) job.

You'll only need a small electrical screwdriver, and a pair of pliers (or two) to do this fix.

Remove the switch from your car.

You need to remove the switch fascia, a small screwdriver under the lip.

and a pull off the moulding.....:thumb:

The next step in to slowly prise the outer casing off the switch.
Insert your screwdriver into the gap between the two to lift the plastic over the small lugs

Do the same for the bottom two lugs and carefully push the switch backwards.

BE CAREFUL, THERE ARE TWO SPRINGS INSIDE.

With the switch apart you'll have the following three units.

The bit that is causing the switch not to latch is the metal rod, it will have bent slightly.
Remove this rod.

With your pliers, bend this rod straight or slightly bent towards the lugs.

Notice it's slightly bent down :(

That's the fix done, now time to put it back together.
Push the rod back into it's clip. (it will be a tight fit)

Then take the front half of the switch, locate the springs into their location on the front half of the switch, place the pins on the back of the switch into the centre of each spring and carefully push the two halves together.

You need to ensure the metal contacts on the front half are inside of all the back outer contacts.

When you push the two halves together it should click together.

If it doesn't, you need to bend the rod slightly more.

Take this assembly and slide the outer casing over the front it, to locate on the four lugs at the back.

You should end up with this.

Sorted

Refit the front of the switch and fit it back in your dash

(Keep the folded paper, just in case)

You might know as you've had a switch apart - which bit gets broken when muppets pull the switch out instead of pressing in to turn it on?

I assume it'll be one of the clips that hold the metal connecting rod in place.

It'll either pop out, which doing the above will sort.

Or it'll brake a clip, which will need a replacment.

Also something to remember is a calibra hazard switch also fits a nova, just have to mod the front abit using a nova swich or ideal for spares to fix the nova ones. :)

Had a go at fixing my hazard switch today but Unfortunatly my clip was broken inside due to some wolly doing my last mot.

Ive taken a picture of the clip that gets damaged by pulling the switch outwards. This can be fixed by either super glue or by dismantling a calibra hazard swich & using the internal parts as they are the same.

Even with the clip broken for now as most know you can remove the 2x springs & the switch will still work fine.

when I stripped my switch, it turned out that the white track for the pin on the front half had some out of its mountings. The pin itself was fine.

all working now though

not long had my mk2 nova and asked what the folded paper was for the guy hadn't had it long and just said it had come like it so thought nothing of it. as i drove down the road a few days later i got fed up with the tatty bit of paper hanging out the dash so gave it a yank and wished i didn't when my hazards wouldn't stay off so the paper got rammed back in place lol now i've found this guide i will be attacking the paper again tomorrow to get rid of it lol cheers

mine wasn't as bad as this but is wasn't clipped home where it should have been now i've rebuilt it it's operating perfect saved me the couple of quid on a new switch cheers
